This festival is celebrated by praying to God, who has created the elements of nature on this earth to enable a good harvest, after several months of hard work by the farmers. Therefore, the farmers worship the Sun God and the animals on this day, for giving them a good harvest. Furthermore, on the day of Makara Sankaranthi, the Sun commences its 183 day cycle, of rising in the east and via traveling in the north direction to set in the west, called Utharayanam. (See diagram opposite). Utharayanam is filled with many auspicious and holy days, during which many celebrations take place. The auspicious Makara Sankaranthi Pooja will be performed at Sri Sai Siva Vishnu Temple on 13/01/13. All are welcome!
