Spring! It’s great to see all the green that pops up in the Spring. But green
also has another ‘meaning’ and for the folks planning Showcase Seguin
(formerly Business Showcase), the green movement and Showcase seemed
like a perfect fit.
The 2009 version of Showcase will feature businesses (banks, retail stores,
physicians) as it has in the past, but it also will add a home and garden-type
component, featuring businesses that cater to homeowners and folks who
enjoy the great outdoors.
Showcase Seguin’s Preview Night is scheduled for Thursday, March 12,
with lots of food and drink and a sneak peak at the exhibits. Show Day is
Friday, March 13, from 1 to 8 p.m.
The event also has expanded to fill up the Colisieum, the Women’s Building
and the Dance Slab at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Seminars, handson activities, door prizes, and more excitement will fill the day.
Tickets are on sale now at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, 116

In February, Texas Lutheran University will
celebrate Black History Month with a public
lecture, Gospel Fest, and a number of events
for students celebrating African-American
history and heritage.
Black History Month began in 1926 and is
celebrated in February in the United States. Each
year TLU commemorates the month, and this
year’s celebration is entitled “Black in America:
The TLU Experience 2009.”
On Feb. 3, Burundi native Jean-Marie
Ngendahayo, visiting scholar in residence at TLU,
will present a public lecture, “The Perception of
the USA in Africa.” His presentation will begin at
9:30 a.m. in Jackson Auditorium and is free and
open to the public.
Ngendahayo has held positions in the Burundian
government including minister of foreign affairs
and international cooperation, senior political
peace negotiator, minister of communications,
and Member of Parliament. He has escaped
assassination attempts, lived in exile, and returned
to Burundi where he served in Parliament until last
summer when government turmoil again sent him
into exile, this time to Texas.
Two other events are open to the community.
Gospel Fest will be held from 6-10 p.m. on Friday,
Feb. 20, in Wupperman Little Theatre. The event
will be a night of praise and song by various
groups. Black History Month will end on Feb. 28

up at Vinnie’s Belly Laugh Club for the final talent
competition. A ventriloquist with moving lips, a
foul mouthed stand up comedian, a baton twirling
bimbo, the flamboyant owner of a lip synching
poodle, a chanteuse with a questionable accent
and a hypnotist with a twitch all fight to win the
grand prize. When Vinnie turns up dead, they’re
all suspects and the audience has the time of its
life grilling them and fingering the murderer.
Show dates are Feb.12-15 and 20-22 at the
Palace Theater in downtown Seguin. Tickets may
be purchased at the box office or advance tickets
at Gift and Gourmet.

Marketing Seguin for Tourists!
The new year started out with a bang in
promoting Seguin for leisure and group travel
to Seguin. CVB staff and volunteers have sold
Seguin at trade shows in McAllen, Austin, and
Houston.
The McAllen International Travel & Leisure
Show held Jan. 9-10 at the McAllen Civic Center
had an attendance of 12,000 people. At the
Seguin booth, we registered 1,912 individuals with
many more stopping by for information. The show
is attended predominately by Winter Texans.
Next stop on the tour was Austin for the AAA
Travel & Cruise Show held Sunday, Jan. 18.
Attended by AAA members the CVB distributed 50
Seguin promotional packets.
The following weekend Sunday, Jan. 25, the
AAA Houston show was held at the Marriott
Westchase hotel in Houston. The CVB staff visited
with attendees sharing information on Seguin and
distributed 450 promotional packets.
The month of travel concluded Tuesday,
Jan. 26, with the Harris County Precinct Show,
attended by group travel planners in Houston
with access to free bus transportation for groups
by the Harris County Transportation Department.
The majority of the group travel to Seguin is from
Harris County. Staff visited with trip planners and
distributed 475 group travel itinerary books.
At each of these shows brochures for
attractions, local hotels, downtown shopping
and dining guide, Mid Texas Symphony, Seguin
Specialty Shops and Dining Guides were made
available to booth visitors.
Special thanks to Sophie Valenta, Fanny
Harkins, Wilton and Virginia Woods for assisting at
the McAllen International Travel Show.
