To serve mass is also the most honourable work that oan be confided to you. Come then, with joy and eagerness, to fulfill this service. Let your toilet and deportment be becoming and your heart full of respect and piety. Before you enter the sacristy, kneel at the altar, make the sign of the cross, and say to Jesus, hidden in the Holy Tabernacle; "My Saviour, I adore You with all my heart, I come to serve mass for love of You; bless Your child. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, Amen." Then enter the sacristy to assist the priest in the preparation for the mass. When coming out bow to the crucifix at the same moment as the priest and walk in the lead, eyes lowered and hands joined respectfully. Always genuflect sedately, with body erect and say each time: "My Jesus, I adore You and I love You." While the priest is ascending the altar, kneel, take this little book and read the answers distinctly. At any time other, than the mass hour the priest will be pleased to help you to a fuller understanding of these nice prayers. This manual will prove useful whether you are serving or assisting at mass. THE HOLY MASS P.—Introibo ad altare Dei. You, my dear child, prepare your soul to receive the precious graces of the Holy Sacrifice by saying : | V "O Eternal Father, our divine Jesus will soon change the bread of the host and the wine in the chalice into His own body and blood. Priest and victim, he will offer to You this body and this Wood, as on the cross, for ray salvation and that of all men. Deign, O My God, to regard with favor this sacrice. Hear the voice of Your Divine Son and by reason of his sufferings and death have pity on us. Gramt us to live a holy life. Convert the poor sinners of this parish. Grant that all my famliy, particularly my father and mother, will one day be to heaven with me. Give to our Holy Father the Pope, to the Bishop and to the Rector of this parish, the graces they need to save the souls confided to their care. CONSECRATION The priest extends his hands over the chalice. This is the solemn moment when Jesus, God Himself, will become present, under the appearances of bread and wine, in the handSs of the priest. Ring the bell once and ascend respectfully to the priest's side. At both elevations sound the bell, first when the priest genuflects, again when he elevates the Host or the Chalice and once more I— 2 2 — when he genuflects again, then bow your head and say with fervor these invocations : "My Jesus, I believe in You." "My Jesus, I hope in You." "My Jesus, I adore You and I love You with all my heart." Returning to your place say piously : "Great God of heaven and earth, I unite myself with the priest to offer You the precious body and blood of Your Son Jesus truly present at this moment on the ailtar." "Receive this offering as a token of infinite adoration for Your Sovereign Majesty, of thanks for Your innumerable favours, of reparation for the sins of all men and particularly my own." "Accept also this sacrifice as a prayer. Deign to grant us all the graces which are necessary to live happily on earth and to gain heaven." — 23 — "Also O My God, in consideration of this sacrifice, assist and deliver the poor souls in Purgatory, above all, those of my parish and family and particularly the who have died recently.' s0uls 0f "Grant that one day we ,poor sinners may also obtain mercy so that we may, with the Blessed Virgin, the Angels and Saints, love and bless You in Paradise. I ask You this favour in the name of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen." P. — In a low voice : Per Ipsum, et cum Ipso, et in Ipso est tibi Deo Patri omnipotent in unitate Spiritus Sancti, omnis honor et gloria. p . — Per omnia ssecula saeculorum. 5.—Amen. P. Oremus. Prseceptis salutaribus moniti et divina institutione formati, audemus dicere : Pater noster qui es in ccelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum, adveniat regnum tuum, fiat voluntas tua, sicut in ccelo et in terra. Panem nos- — 24 trum quotidianum da nobis hodie. Et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem ; S. Sed libera nos a malo. "O yes, My God, deliver us from all suffering but save me above all from sin which I fear the most. Oh Mother of God, my Guardian Angel, my patron Saint, pray for me, that sin may never take away my innocence and endanger my salvation." — P . — Per omnia ssecula saeculorum. S. Amen. P- — P a x domini sit semper vobiscum. S.—Et cum spirito too. P. — Three times : AGNUS DEI, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere n o b i s . . . dona nobis pacem. — 25 — In masses for the dead : Dona eis requiem...sempit?rnam. The priest prays in a low voice to prepare for Holy Communion. You, my dear child, say : COMMUNION "O My Jesus, I would be very happy to one day be a priest and to also take communion at each mass. At least, O My Saviour, will You not soon come to visit the soul of Your little Altar Boy. Purify my conscience, give me Your virtues and come spiritually into my heart to prepare a beautiful and rich tabernadle for the day of my communion." When the priest strikes his breast ring the bell three times and repeat in a low voice : D O M I N G , N U N SUM DIGNUS ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum die verbo, et sanabitur anima mea. The priest takes communion saying in a low voice these words which you may also repeat : — 26 — Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam meam in vitam seternam. The priest adores Jesus who has entered his heart. Taking the paten he collects the holy particles on the corporal and1 places them in the chalice. Then he takes communion with the Precious Blood while saying : Sanguis Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam meam in vitam seternam. Should people approach the Holy Table to receive communion say the Confiteor. Bow, when the priest, facing the faithful, elevates the Host while saying : Ecce Agnus Dtei, ecce qui tollis peccata mundi. 'Accompany the priest to the Holy Table, carrying a candle if needed, to give Holy Communion. After this be ready, on the Epistle side, to slowly pour, first wine in the ohalice and a mo- —27 - ment later wine and water on the priest's fingers. Then move the book to the other side of the altar and carry back the chalice veil. P. — Dominus vobiscttm. S.—Et cum spiritu tuo. P. — Oremus. Pray also my child : " My God, I had the happiness of assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the mass and the honour of serving it. To thank You I promise to be very virtuous today. Grant me this grace through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who five's and reigns with You in unity with the Holy Ghost, forever and ever." After each conclusion : P- — Per omnia ssecula sseculorum. S. Amen. Should the priest leave the book open, carry it to the other side of the altar. P. — Dominus vobiscum. S. Et cum spiritu tuo. — 28 — P. — Ite, missa est. ou Benedicamus Domino. 5. Deo gratias. In masses for the dead : P. — Requiescant in pace. S.—Amen, Bow your head to receive the priest's benediction. Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater et Filius et Spiritus sanctus. 5.—Amen. P. — Dominus vobiscum. S. Et cum spiritu tuo. P. — Initium Joannem. S. sancti Evangelii secundum Gloria tibi, Domine. While the priest reads the last gospel, heed this advice f r o m Jesus. "Dear Child of the Altar, after having received the signal grace of serving at the Holy Altar, you should — 29 — be, to-day and always, the model of your brothers and companions, in class, in the streets and at home, the same as in the church. Be careful to preserve your inocence. Obey your iparents and teachers. Shun bad company and close your ears to bad conversation. Remember God is present always and is watching you each moment. Think a little on death which may come on you this day. Be industrious and charitable; above all be .pure dike the Holy Angels who have assisted at the Holy Mass here with you, so that you may one day, with ithem, participate in the joys of heaven. —Deo gratias.
