That was the question posed to our readers last month and the response was overwhelming, Dr. John certainly has the island fired up! After five months of printing his controversial subject matter the situation reached a head and complaints were coming in thick and fast. “We are a religious island, you girls should be ashamed for printing that filth,” said Edwin Jackson, to East Wind editors. It seemed the only way to resolve the matter was to find out what East Wind readers really wanted in a readers poll. Thank you to all those who took the time to cast their vote either online, in person or through the ballot box in Henderson’s. Votes were officially counted live on HQTV on the 23rd October alongside a heated telephone debate over the morality of the column in question. “Don’t worry, he wont give you a lethal injection tomorrow if you don’t vote for him” said presenter Annie Bodden during the show. Results were unanimous however, Dr. John won a landslide victory, an amazing 2070 votes came in, 63% in favour of the column staying. As with any poll of this nature those who felt strongly could cast any number of votes in any number of ways. “The poll was ridiculous, you could vote as many times as you like” said Jim Warren of Sandy Bay. “We love Doctor Johns column, its hilarious. If you don’t like it, don’t read it!” said Rosa….. “Normally my son never reads anything but as soon as the paper arrives he reads Dr. John straight away.” She said. So, back by popular demand this month, find out what advice Dr. John has to give on page 16…. if you want to that is. Cont. on pg. 2 It`s make your mind up time, election day on the 27th November, find out more about the canditates on page 6 2 Utila East Wind Cont. from pg. 1 NEWSINBRIEF Esta fue la pregunta que hicimos a nuestro lectores el mes pasado y la respuesta fue abirumante, Dr. John ciertamente la isla se ha manifesto. Gracias a todos los que tomaron su tiempo para emitir su voto en persona o at- Tranquila Troop on Tour Managers of Tranquila bar left the island for a well deserved last minute holiday on October 12th. Regular customers were not so enthusiastic about their sudden departure as the popular bar closed. Distraught customers were spotted roaming the streets at a loss for what to do. To add insult to injury Tranquila was hit by Wilma, delaying the reopening until Thursday 27th October, after a total closure of fifteen days. Keller Nominated for Prestigeous Award Nominated for this years Copan Award was resident artist, Neil Keller, creator of the Jade Seahorse. Pipped at the post by Honduran singer, Jeronimo Anderson, Mr Kellers loss created quite a stir. “They passed up a privalage not giving the award to me”said Mr. Keller who attended the ceremony in Tegucigalpa. Also infuriated by the decision was award winning Demo Esperanza, who showed his dissatisfaction by throwing his own award at the judges offices after the event. Marooned Princess The Princess ferry had a run of bad luck last month. She broke down due to engine problems and then grounded on a shallow mudbank while seeking shelter from Wilma in the Lagoon. Here she was marooned throughout the storm as the heavy seas in the hurricanes aftermarth made the crossing to the mainland too trechorous. Service of the unlucky ferry was not resumed untill Tuesday 25th. Help Available! Doors are open to everyone at the rehabilitation centre ‘Delitorar Allantico’ in La Ceiba, just turn up! A full time phycologist is on hand to provide treatment in addition to daily, hour long visits by a general doctor. Once a month a neurologist attends the clinic and together the team treat a variety of illnesses from depression and low self esteem to substance addiction. “We recieve no government help and raise all funds ourselves, we feel passionate about helping people” said Mr. Montoya, President of the Board. For more information visit the clinic (half a block east of Casa Del Niño) or call 986 7979. Island wide recycling sceme on the way A recyclables collection service for dive shops and businesses on Utila will soon be available thanks to Dan Spatz, Watersports Manager and Troy and Edith Bodden. With financial assistance from US Aid they aim to distribute 50 gallon plastic barrels across the island to collect plastic bottles and aluminium cans and ship them to the mainland aboard the Boddens cargo boat, Prime Time. “The minimal income will pay for a three wheeler bycycle to pick up the trash” said Mr Dan Spatz, who hopes to have the collection scheme up and running within a few months. Until then you can bring clean plastic bottles and aluminum cans to Watersports for recycling. Pepe Lobo in Town Preisential candidate Pepe Lobo visited the Island on Sunday 9th October as part of his national election campaign. A National Party march and rally was organised in his honour and was well attended despite the early start. ~ ¿Deberia esta columna quedarse o irse? However the rainy season can be very variable, with the rains coming any time from October to February, some years hardly see any rain at all. More rain and cloudy skies also bring a drop in air temperatures. Water temperatures remain relativly high as water takes longer to cool down, it might not feel like it though without the sun. Hurricane season officially continues untill the end of November, although hurricanes this late on are rare, the close call with Wilma last month was a reminder not to underestimate this record breaking 2005 hurricane season. ■ Utila East Wind Staff W ilma, the strongest Atlantic hurricane on record, brushed closely past Utila offering just a taste of its awesome power. Destructive waves, rising seas and storm force winds hammered the island which escaped relatively unharmed, bar a few docks. “It was the worst we`ve seen since Mitch” said Mayor Alton Cooper, who along with the rest of the community had been tracking Wilma’s progress as she approached from the east, a category 5 hurricane. Islanders rushed to buy supplies and board up while the authorthities evacuated the Cayes and issued advisories. “They did a great job providing us with beds and food at the public school” said Mrs.. Munoz, evacuee from Pigeon Caye. Wilmas wrath eroded the public beach, divided Coco Locos bar and tore planks out of most docks. Water pipes were ripped out and low-lying areas were also flooded. The storms aftermath brought a flurry of activity with everyone pitching in to help. Municipal workmen made quick work replacing the beach and the whole community managed to get the island ready for business as usual in just a few days. “We shovelled sand in buckets off the street in front of the house… all day,” said Nadine Jackson of Sandy Bay. With the ferry and planes out of action many were marooned on Utila, “I was supposed to be in Barcelona proposing to my girlfriend but I got stuck on this rock!” said Thomas White, stranded tourist. The ferry was stuck in the mud in the lagoon and did not resume service until seven days after Wilma hit. However travel was possible by the Friday when planes began ferrying passengers. The most lasting effect of Wilma was the temporary closure of its too most frequented bars, Tranquila and Coco Locos. “I feel a bit lost, where am I am supposed to go and drink beer now,” said Elliot King, tourist. Hurricanes - Did You Know? ►The US Government attempted to weaken hurricanes by dropping silver iodide into them throughout the sixties and seventies. This operation, known as Stormfury, involved seeding clouds in the rainbands of storms by dropping chemicals from planes. However this expensive tactic was abandoned after 20 years later after findings showed that the technique failed to affect most hurricanes. ►Historically hurricanes in the West Indies were named after the particular saint’s day on which the hurricane occurred. From 1953, the U.S. National Weather Service began using female names for storms, in 1979 men’s names began to be included in the list. ►The word Hurricane is derived from ‘Hurican’ the Carib God of evil, which itself was derived from the Mayan creator God ‘Hurakan’. ■ Hurricane Mitch passed Guanaja as a category 4 hurricane in October 1998, resulting in an estimated 9,086 total deaths making it one the of the deadliest hurricanes in history. Hurricane Fifi passed over the Bay Islands as a category 2 hurricane in September 1974, bringing a storm surge of up to 12ft and torrential rains. ■ 6 Utila East Wind E November 2005 It’s make your mind up time! lection day on 27th November has sent the island politics crazy, will it be red or blue, Richard or Alton, Pepe or Mel? Refreshments followed the laying of the stone and everyone milled around enjoying the sun on the virtually mosquito free meadow. The plants were donated by the Spanish government and once up and running should provide the island with an unlimited supply of fresh water. ■ Toasting the new plant. Fernando Velasco WORLDNEWS Pakistani Quake A violent 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Pakistan and neighbouring countries on 8th October has so far claimed more than 50,000 deaths and caused massive devastation. The remote mountainous region of Kashmir was worst hit, the area has been centre of a bitter territorial dispute between Pakistan and India for over fifty years. The aid operation was badly hampered by unfavourable weather and there are fears that a second wave of deaths will occur as the cold Himalayan winter sets in and many are still yet to receive help. There is concern over the amount of international donations for aid and reconstruction “We have been donated about $620m or something, which is totally inadequate. It should be more than $5bn,” said Pakistani leader Gen Musharraf. ■ Bird Flu The bird flu that has swept Asia since 2003, causing more than 60 human deaths, is spreading. Britain, Turkey, and Greece have reported cases of the disease, thought to be carried by migrating birds. Currently the flu can only be caught from an infected bird however scientists are concerned it may mutate into a form that can spread from person to person. “The range of deaths could be anything between 5m and 150m,” said Dr Nabarro, UN co-ordinator for avian and human influenza. ■ Rosa Parks Death Civil rights icon, Rosa Parks, died peacefully aged 92 on the 24th October. She was arrested in Alabama in 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. Her arrest sparked a boycott of the city bus system organised by Martin Luther King Jnr. that lasted over a year and marked the start of the civil rights struggle in the US. ■ Strawberry Smell Trademark Bid Fails French company, Eden Sarl failed in its attempt to trademark the smell of fresh strawberries to use in soaps, stationery, leather goods and clothing. They argued that although strawberries may look and taste different, the scent is always the same, and therefore could be trademarked. The court disagreed, smell experts found strawberries can actually have up to five different smells. ■ India Train Derails 100 people were killed when a passenger train derailed in floods in southern India on Saturday 29th October. The crash is thought to have been caused by a collapsed bridge. 100 additional deaths occured due to heavy rains in the south of India. ■ Utila East wind Blue Pages November, 2005 A Mystery Superhero Cain Utila Dive Mutton Tale strikes again! In an act reminiscent of Gollum from Lord Of The Rings, Mr. Cain embarked on his first descent into the muddy waters to find the ring. Amazingly, he emerged seconds later clutching it in his grimy hand. “I couldn’t believe it” Mr. Cain said, “I literally just dived down and there it was right in front of my nose!” ■ C ongratulations to Utila Dive Centre who recently recieved an award from PADI “in recognition for their outstanding contributions to the dive industry in 2005”. Divers work in a variety of fields, deep sea cutting welding and drilling. The majority of commercial divers are employed by the oil industry. The work is strenuos and dangerous, often involving spending months at a time on isolated oil platforms. Ama Divers, Japan Female free divers who have been harvesting abalone, sea urchins and pearls in Japan for at least 4000 years. Without the aid of any wetsuits or scuba equipment, they dive up to ten meters holding their breath for minutes at a time in the cold water. Due to modern commercial fishing and newly introduced pearl farms, numbers of true Ama are declining. Many girls continue to don the white igosi (traditional ama coutumes) posing and performing for tourists. WWII Frogmen Rode torpedoes underwater steering them to their targets. So what IS happening to our Corals? Corals are very complex organisms, made up of three different elements; animals, plants and minerals. The plant, zooxanthellae (algae), produces food for the animal portion and the mineral is the calcium carbonate skeleton. Coral live in a symbiotic relationship with the zooxanthellae housed in their tissues. When zooxanthellae are expelled from the tissues the white calcium carbonate structure is left, hence the name – Coral Bleaching. Through natural process a small percentage of zooxanthellae are lost, just like the cells in our body die and Willy’s Hole by Remi Michaud are replaced. Changes in the environment however can result in mass coral bleaching. Corals prefer water between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius depending on their location on the reef. Increased water temperatures for prolonged periods can bleach corals, Such as on Utila this late summer season. As human skin is vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation, so are corals. Doldrums, calm flat water, have a negative impact on them. When the water movement is minimal and the sun is powerful, elevated amounts of UV rays pass through the water column stressing the coral, and causing them to bleach. Other stressors that bleach corals include coral disease, excess shade, smothering, salinity changes and pollution. This years coral bleaching event not only happened on Utila but Caribbean wide and the statistics’s are quite astounding – Florida Keys, Barbados, Tobago and Panama report 60-70% of all coral species being affected. In late August early September divers and scientists first started to notice the bleaching . In October it earned its name of a mass coral bleaching event. Time will tell how this is going to affect Utilian waters. The good news is when conditions return to normal the zooxanthellae often return to the coral within 6-8 weeks. The brilliant colours return and islands like Utila can breathe a sigh of relief as the reef survives. However as climate changes persist the chances of the corals surviving this event are diminished. We can try to minimize the impact we have on the environment surrounding coral, such as lessening the amount of human waste going untreated into the water and managing the growth of our community by leaving the mangroves in place. ■ W illy’s hole is right in the heart of Marine Reserve, Turtle Harbour. Between the Maze and Old House, its buoy is well protected from currents year round. The coral garden starts below the boat at 4m / 15 feet. Just west of the mooring line you cannot miss the narrow crevice that takes you down and onto the wall at 12m / 40 feet. Keep the steep wall to your right and descend to your desired depth. The wall meets a beautiful coral garden seabed at 28m / 90 feet. Consider spending some time here looking for crustaceans and Golden tail Morays. Mind the wall however – this dive site’s main attraction is an inward jog a mere few minutes into the dive. Known as Willy’s hole, legend has it that it was once jammed packed with grouper. Captain Willy (sadly now passed away) a fisherman from the Cayes claimed it for his own and would often return home with “a hundred pounds and more”. You might not find any grouper but you will find a small cavern at 26m / 80 feet full of Glassy Sweepers, also watch for Banded Coral Shrimp and Barracuda. Continue up and towards the Maze for some variety and a chance to see some spotted drum. Take the conservative route on your reciprocal heading and follow the shallows back to the boat, you’ll find Lettuce Sea slugs and red-lipped blennies everywhere. Enjoy your dive! ■ Mutton Snapper Lutjanus analis Family: Snappers / Lutjanidae Size: To 75cm / 30ins Depth: To 30m / 100ft Range: Massachusetts south to Brazil. Introduced to Bermuda. ~ Dear Dr. John They call us Spaniards. I came to Utila about four years ago with my husband and our young daughter. We left a small town on the coast with hopes for better jobs and security that we would find in Utila. Our dreams of a better life came true. Both me and my husband found jobs. The work is hard but the pay is better than on the coast. My daughter goes to a wonderful school. Where we live is very crowded, but it is still better than the small town we came from. Now we have hope November, 2005 for a good future. I have seen great changes on the island in the last four years. We now have 24 hour power. The schools have computers, the streets have improved and are cleaned everyday. I do not worry about the safety of my daughter when she goes to school or plays with her many friends, the quality of the water has improved, the beach is beautiful and fun for the whole family. We have a cell phone to call our family on the coast. My problem is now I am worried. I worry that all these good changes will stop, and other changes will bring problems. I look at how happy my family is now and I fear that it will not last. I do not want my new island life to become like my old mainland life. I never dreamed that I could find such a good life in Honduras. Please, Dr. John, what can you advise me. Happy Spaniard… Dear Honduran wife and mother They call me a foreigner, I am a North American. I have also been here for four years, and agree that the island of Utila is much better than when I first came, the best we can hope for is an Eastwind that will blow away those that promise different changes and leave standing those that have already given you good changes. ■ by Johnny Hinds “ Our Father Which Art In Heaven” We thank Thee for the privilage to be able to communicate with you.
