SEMA 2010
LAS VEGAS

Everything you ever hear about the SEMA (Specialty
Equipment Manufacturers Association) show in Las Vegas
is more than likely true. More cars, more wheels and tires,
more of any kind of car bling and foo-foo than you can
imagine, and oh! ALL the pretty girls in Las Vegas to attract
attention to and individualize more that 1600 displays in
thousands and thousands of square feet. Bill and I spent 2
½ days and may not have seen all of the three great halls and
the multitude of outside displays.
We arrived Tuesday afternoon, registered our “Drifter” press
passes and managed to see about ½ of one three great halls.
We had guest passes to the MONSTER parking lot party
at 4:30 – all the food and drink
was free—and passes to get back
in to the hall which closes at 5:00
to see the private unveiling (for
the press) of the ABT AUDI R8--lots of carbon fiber, suspension
stiffening and beaucoup
horsepower.
With over 100,000 people there for the week every cab was
booked as was every hotel and restaurant. Waiting in line
for things was the norm. We did manage to get up close to a
few of the booths by getting there ahead of the crowds. You
might recognize Mario here at one of the Mothers booths—
he drew a lot of attention. Besides all the girls there were
celebrities everywhere. Car drivers and designers like Foose,
and we managed to meet Noel Lee from Monster Cable as
he introduced his joint venture with California Customs.
Their JV will announce a new line of car care products in
the spring. I snagged a sample of a chamois like absorbent
microfiber drying towel that works better than anything I
have ever used.
The variety of products was
unbelievable. If you can imagine
it—someone makes it and sells it.
One entire section was devoted to
fasteners, ones to exhaust, paint,
suspensions, and, of course
,
one entire hall to wheels and tires.
That is what this show was originally about-- wheels and
tires-- and eventually developed after 46 years to what it is
today. Here are a couple of the Porsche wheel enhancement
options we viewed. There were many but most seemed

focused on the center lock option on the GT3 and Turbo.
More aftermarket options are in the works as well.
Every vendor, when asked about what they had for Porsche,
referred to their catalog. From Bilstein to K & N, all had
Porsches in their sights. We passed the PCA interviewing the
Escort boys in their display on the way to meet with Meguiars
and see their “wrap” demonstration.
What was surprising were the new water based paint products
including colored chrome. Along with the new “Wrap”
technology and new set of wheels you can change the color,
texture and appearance of a car in less than a day. We
watched gloss black go to flat white with carbon fiber hood
and roof—all with wrap like you
see on stick-on advertisements.
Many manufacturers had overlays
in process including 3M and
Meguiars.
We saw paints that look one color
head on and a different color a few
feet away. Wheels as big as 30”
were not uncommon. Saw one
with a 385 X 15 X 30 tire. Over 15 inches in width with the
rubber only 2” tall on the wheel. Saw the same wheels and
tires later on a Hummer in the DUB display outside.
Tuesday we got to ride in the new FORD SVT F150 out in
the parking lot. Lots of screeching, tire smoke and air time.
Picture is a demo of FORD off road trucks on the same
course where we rode the SVTs. After the ride we attended
Entertainment Arts (EA) debut of SPEED II, their latest and
greatest simulation software.

Here is a sample of one of
the other off road vehicles on
display. Everything seemed larger than life. There were 50
plus mustangs and many show cars impossible to describe. If
you ever have the chance SEMA is well worth the visit, plan a
couple of days and your most comfortable shoes
It is impossible in this short article to detail all the things we
saw while at SEMA. It certainly was an experience worth
repeating. Bill and I agreed, however, it probably isn’t an every
year event. We were beat from walking and, hard as it is to
believe, we had automotive overload.

30 Years Ago (December 1980)
The December 20 Christmas Party at D.A. Stones, 10th & L
Streets, was chaired by Kathleen Peebles who asked party-goers
to bring an ornament for the tree. After social hour and a great
dinner, the program moved along quickly with recognition
of the outgoing board of directors, introduction of the newly
elected board members, presentation of traditional gift to
outgoing President, Rik Larson, presentation of awards to the
Most Active Member, Most Active New Member, and for the
most Outstanding Contribution to SVR. Then, the group
proceeded to party and dance to the tunes of Terry Knight,
SVR’s disk-jockey for the evening.
The following information from the December 1980
DRIFTER: SVR ended the year with 225 primary members.
Treasurer Kern Breaux reported the club’s assets to be $151.00
in the checking account and $345.00 in savings. First year
racer Arnold O’Shields raced his E-Production 356 to a
third-place SCCA EP class-finish at Laguna Seca during the
weekend of the Monterey Grand Prix, October 18-19, 1980.

Ninety-two merrymakers thought the December 1 SVR
Christmas Party and Awards Banquet at the Palomino Room
was a smashing success. Chairperson Karen Mangin did a
fabulous job with beautiful table decorations and charming
souvenir champagne glasses at every place. Thanks to all of
the sponsors, Fabrication Specialties, OK Tires, Joe Hill’s
Transmissions, and Kern Breaux, door prizes and other
amenities were plentiful. Co-masters of ceremonies Sally
Boeck and Randy Vidmar kept the program moving briskly.
Event of the Year honors went to the San Simeon Tour chaired
by Jean and Phil Keith and Vicki and Mike Willis. Rookies
of the Year were Gail and Bob Bitters. Sally Boeck presented
each outgoing board member with a beautiful engraved crystal
beer mug, and in turn, Sally received a suitably engraved
crystal plate. The President’s Award, not automatically made
each year, was awarded this year by Sally to Tom and Brenda
Solter for opening their home and grounds the last two years
for SVR’s charity auction and concours. Herb Hoover received
the DRIFTER Award of Excellence for creating outstanding
tech tip contributions during the past years. So it was -- old
friends, new friends, good times -- and dancing into the wee
hours to the sounds of the Peter Morgan Band.

competition program suggesting goals for 2001 to improve the
experience of SVR members participating in autocross, driver’s
education, concours, rally and tech session events.
(Larry’s note: this marks the end of Drifting Back in the 30-,
20- and 10-year looking-back format because we’ve run out
of months for that particular style. Starting 10 years ago
(thanks to the persistence of Dennis Stettner) with the May
1991 issue of THE DRIFTER, we’ve covered 30 years, 1971
through 2000, of SVR history. Coincidently, the column
spanned exactly 356 months. It was a fun ride for me, getting
to re-read all those great DRIFTERS and re-live SVR history.

At the December 4 joint 1990-1991 board meeting, treasurer
Ray Clements reported SVR had received $1,700 as its share
from the 1990 Parade in Monterey. Membership director
Dolores Weddle reported that 20-year PCA membership
certificates were received for Steven and Gwen Ito, Ralph
and Carolyn Heath, Jerry Jurach, and Norv Travis. Dolores
also said the 1991 roster would be ready to print by midDecember and that Bob and Beth Jacobson would sponsor
the printing. President Sally Boeck reported 48 ballots were
received from primary members in the election of 1991
officers.
The Front Ballroom of Sun City, Lincoln Hills, was the setting
for SVR’s December 17 afternoon Christmas Party with Bob
and Beth Jacobson as co-chairs. Prime Rib was the fare du
jour. The evening promised a gift and ornament exchange
and the usual end-of-year awards and recognition as well as
the presentation of the out-going and in-coming boards of
directors. No write-up for THE DRIFTER this year, but
lots of photos showing these folks having great fun: Joan and
Jose Uranga, Tom and Jude Sisson, Gloria Nelson, Glen and
Tanya Brooksby, Tim and Susan Fleming, Barbara McCrory,
Mike and Emily Willis, Russ Hildebrand, Shelagh Matthews,
Kathy Smalley, Bob and Beth Jacobson, and Dennis and Judy
Stettner.
In the December DRIFTER: Editor Dennis Stettner
announced THE DRIFTER was now on the SVR website
(Doug DeVetter, webmaster) in PDF format available as
a download to all SVR members, thus beginning a new
tradition for SVR. If there was an award for the best club
officer report of the year, Glen Brooksby would surely have

Timothy Ryan Fleming
On November 21, 2010 at the Age of 51, Tim Ryan Fleming of Folsom passed away in Los Angeles, California.
Tim will be deeply missed by his wife Susan, son Ryan, and daughter Lauren. Tim was elected to be the PCA National Treasurer for the 2011-2012 term.
Tim and Sue have been members of Sacramento Valley Region (SVR) since 1992. He and Sue chaired CRAB, the
multi-event weekend presented by SVR three times (CRAB 23 in 1995, CRAB 24 in 1996, and CRAB 28 in 2001).
Tim was also Vice President of the region in 1999 and President in 2000. They were also involved with Porsche Parade in 2000 held in Sacramento.
Tim then went on to serve as Zone 7 Representative for two terms (2001-2004) and two terms as Zone 11 (often
referred to as the Offshore zone) Representative (2005-2008). He also served as chairperson for the PCA National
nominating committee in 2006 and 2008.
The Zone 7 Wall of Fame was started in 2003 by Tim Fleming with the guidance of the Region Presidents. Tim was
also one of the originators of the “PCA Escape” event concept and
the first one was held in 2005 and was called the PCA Escape to
the Wine Country.
Tim and Sue still own a 1969 911E that has morphed to the current RSR look GT3S configuration. Tim was a DE instructor for
Zone 7 and Golden Gate Region and a licensed club racer. They
drove their 1998 C2S (license plate of “HER C2S”) on tours and
the occasional rally and showed it in concours.
Tim’s passions included race car driving, scuba diving, and his family.
He will be deeply missed by his many PCA friends.

Event: San Simeon Tour - When: June 3-5 - Location: San Simeon
Mark your calendars for this special tour.
This year in addition to the castle tours, fun
drive, and fellow Porsche friends, there will be a
Friday night welcome party/dinner. On Friday
we will leave early in the morning touring to
San Simeon in our usual not so straightforward
route. We will stop at Hollister for a picnic
lunch and regroup for the Porsche Roads tour
down hwy 25 to Paso Robles and the wineries.
Some will remember “Peach Tree” Road!!!
In the Paso Robles area are numerous wineries
to head off and enjoy the various varieties of
wines. Be sure to pick up a bottle for the dinner
and arrival/dinner party. We are working on
a winery stop at the Mitchella Vineyard &
Winery which we used last time.
Hearst Castle tour (s) will be on Saturday and
Sunday. Your are on your own to schedule the
tour or tours that you would like to see. First
timers should take tour 1 in the morning and
if up to it, another tour in afternoon. There is
also a new tour this year which is basically a self
guided garden tour.
Lodging option #1 - Courtesy Inn: If you stay at the Courtesy Inn, your tour cost will tentatively be $175.00
for two people for two nights lodging and Friday dinner.

Several years back a severe hail storm damaged many of our condo’s roofs. The association had been underfunded
and had to pass a special assessment, which invariably resulted in condo owner’s howls being heard all the way in
Abilene. Learning to read and understand the association’s Profit and Loss statement and Balance Sheet became a
personal priority that month. (In some perverse manner, I’m the SVR treasurer because of that storm.)
Fortunately, due to the frugalness of SVR event organizers and the SVR board’s cost-cutting efforts, SVR
members don’t necessarily need that skill – SVR is in pretty good shape today. How good, and whether it’s too
good or not good enough, is part of the treasurer’s responsibility. So let’s talk about that.
Before starting, it’s important to clear up a misperception about SVR. SVR is not a “Non-Profit” and nor are
there laws stipulating that we “break even” or run a zero balance. SVR is a “Tax-Exempt” corporation which
means that if we turn a profit, as we did last year, we don’t have to pay income taxes on it. There are lots of rules
regarding collecting and dispersing funds, but none that stipulates whether or not we turn a profit.
With regards to financial health, SVR’s Profit & Loss is in the black, but the balance sheet swings wildly
throughout the year driven by event income and expenses, as well as the quarterly PCA membership receipts.
So far this year, the balance has ranged from a low of $22.1K in May to a high of $47.5K last month. Today,
November 3, 2010, SVR’s cash balance stands at $44.4K. Before year-end, it’ll be down again due to outstanding
obligations. So before you call Cookie to demand your share in a dividend check, let me offer that a) tax laws
prevent that, b) as mentioned, some of the money is already allocated, and c) the money isn’t as much as you
think.
Many SVR events require deposits which SVR has to fund – Mendocino Tour, the Christmas Party, and all
competition events require huge facility deposits before the first member dollar is collected. The largest deposit so
far this year was over $16K. The 2011 San Simeon Tour deposit was just made even though the event doesn’t take
place until June of next year! Seven months from now! Similarly, all of the facility, entertainment, award, and food
deposits for next year’s CRAB35 will have to be accommodated before SVR sees much money from participants.
When SVR does make money, a portion is returned to members in the form of subsidies. Drifter subscriptions
are heavily subsidized – SVR picks up a large part of that cost. The 150 Christmas party participants are having
almost a third of their expenses subsidized. Autocross is regularly subsidized to keep prices low, and one tour this
year was 100% subsidized. And unlike my condo association, events and tours that lose money are subsidized by
the club and not billed to the participants as a “special assessment to cover unforeseen expenses.”
So yes, SVR is in good shape and everyone (event organizers, planners, the board and even your treasurer)
are working hard to keep it that way. If any of this has piqued your interest, remember that as a tax-exempt
corporation, all of our records are in the public domain – Just ask and you can receive copies of tax statements.
Or, if you’re really interested, this treasurer terms out in 2011 and it’s never too early to look for replacements.

Oh what a Tour!
The 2010
Mendocino Tour was no exception. This tour has been
going on for over 20 years, and as far as I know it has
been created and managed by Rik Larson and his team
for this entire time. This year was excellent as usual We
also invited my stepson Matt and his girlfriend Ally as
well as another friend of ours, Michelle for this year’s
tour. Michelle is a new member of SVR and she just
bought a 2007 White Carrera 4S Cabriolet with custom
chocolate interior and top. I was able to convince Michelle to drive a Porsche before she purchased “the other
sports car”. That was all it took, and she was hooked. I
might also add that Michelle is an accomplished driver
in her own right. Her dad, Sammy Weise raced Porsches
in the late 50’s, so she grew up around them! Matt is a
future member of SVR as well, as soon as he can afford a
Porsche! He always wants to drive mine.
We all met Friday Morning, November 5th at Neillo
Porsche and I might add that Neillo Porsche, who has
hosted other events for SVR was a very gracious host for
this tour as well. They opened their beautiful showroom
for us and had complementary coffee and bottled water
for all of us. After everyone signed off on the PCA Insurance Release and Rik had our “drivers meeting” we
left right on time for our first stop. The weather was
beautiful and the traffic was light. Our first stop was a
gas stop at Pedrick Road and Interstate 80. Rik held another “drivers meeting” because additional cars joined us
at this stop. It was good to see Babette and George Hatten and her beautiful blue Boxster. Because we had so
many cars, Rik wisely broke us up into two groups. One
thing California still has is beautiful Porsche roads. The
group we were in was confidently led by Bill and Cathy
Keegan in their beautiful Porsche 928. Didn’t even
know they had one, I was looking for his red 911 Turbo.
The road was, as expected, twisty and exciting. We drove
to Sonoma Lake Park for lunch. The first group arrived
about 30 minutes before the second group. Everyone
broke out lunch, that is, everyone except us!!! All of our
food and drink was in Ally’s Honda and they were in the
second group! We were saved however, because Michelle
thoughtfully put some cheese, and salmon in her car at
the last minute. The first group was leaving when we
started to have lunch.

We drove the second half of the tour with Matt and Ally
and Michelle. We went up through the Alexander and
Anderson Valleys, stopping at Navarro Winery for some
“weekend juice”. We arrived at Little River Inn just as the
weather was getting a little cool. We just love the North
Coast weather this time of year. After checking into our
rooms, which by the way, because of Rik’s planning was
an effortless event. We ended up at a traditional “room
party”. It was good for this guy to see many old friends.
Rik Larson, Kirk and Linda Bradford, Allen and Dolores
Weddle, Mike and Emily Willis, among others were all
there. Since there were other PCAers at Hill House, I’m
sure the “room parties” were repeated there as well. We
spent the next day walking around the town of Mendocino
and seeing more PCA’ers. Jim and Sheila McDade and
Barbie Flores were there as well as the Neidels from Golden
Gate Region. Rik had also planned a kite flying contest, we
didn’t attend because I was traveling with three women, and
shopping was the order of the day! Rich McGlumphy also
set up a miniature golf tournament in Ft Bragg on Saturday
as well.
We went to dinner at Albion River Inn Restaurant and it
was spectacular as usual. Steve and Diane Harris were also
there with their own party, which by all accounts, was going strong. On Sunday we awoke to a cool and drizzly day,
which was fine by all of us. My ’86 930 Turbo just loves
cool wet weather, read lots of power. We had a sumptuous
breakfast at Little River Inn and then headed back to Sacramento. We had a beautiful drive back to Sacramento albeit
we kept driving into more rain. Oh well, I don’t mind
cleaning my car.
For anyone who did not attend, something very special
was missed. SVR is KNOWN for the MENDOCINO
TOUR. If you have not attended, plan to do so
next year. This tour offers the beauty of the North
Coast, good Porsche roads, and best of all, seeing good
friends. Sitting on the deck and watching the sunset
is a very special occurrence for us. Once again, I want
