everything you suggest, but we will listen to you

Adult Carers activities.
Recently 3 of our Young Carers attended the
Young Carers Conference in Sheffield, as part
of their role as being a Young Carers Champion.
The conference was a great opportunity for the
Champions to meet other Young Carers around
the UK and to take part in different workshops.
These included Digital Storytelling, Festival
Planning, Interviewing Skills and much more.
Champion Emily says:
‘I really enjoyed the Young Carers Champion
Conference. It was really nice to meet other
Young Carers. The workshops I did where really
good and fun, I learnt new skills and I can’t wait to
learn more new stuff.’
Champion Matthew says:
‘It was the experience of being able to do different
things for once and to put forward what we want
changing.’
This new regular feature is a column dedicated to
any achievement YOU have gained!
This time we would like to celebrate
Taiomi for her success in Swimming
Competitions.
She has won several medals for her
swimming talents, coming first in a free
style race.
Taoimi trains 2-3 times a week and
her best stroke is the Butterfly.
So here's a HUGE congratulations to Taiomi from
all of us here at Wired Young Carers Service.
We also want to celebrate
Cara and her Trampolining
achievements, as she won
first place and was awarded
a trophy in a recent
competition.
Cara has been trampolining
for 3 years and trains twice a
week.
So here's a HUGE congratulations to Cara from all
of us here at Wired Young Carers Service.

Wired Young Carers Poster by Megan
YoungSibs
www.youngsibs.org.uk
‘YoungSibs is a UK wide online support service
for siblings under 18 who have a brother or sister
who is disabled or has special educational needs
or a serious long-term condition.’
Time to Change
www.time-to-change.org.uk
Time to Change is England's biggest programme
to challenge mental health stigma and
discrimination.
‘Just as we all have physical health, we have
mental health too. And just as our bodies can
become unwell, so can our minds. Like physical
illness, mental illness affects people of any age,
race, religion or income. It is not the result of
personal weakness, lack of character, or poor
upbringing. ‘
Young Carers Net is:
“a website and online support service for young
people aged 18 and under in the UK, who help to
look after someone in their family who has an
illness, disability, drug/alcohol addiction or mental
health condition.“
You can sign up to the Young Carers Net website
to access support from the online community of
Young Carers or advice from qualified youth
workers.
Some of the things you can access on the website
include:
Contact a Family

Discussion Boards and Chat rooms
www.cafamily.org.uk

Blogs
Contact a Family provides support, advice and
information for families with disabled children, no
matter what their condition or disability.

Agony Aunts

Information around Bullying

Young Carers Stories

Information on health conditions such as
Autism, Depression and more.
In the North West, they carry out the service
through a team of home-based workers and
volunteers. Working at a local and regional level,
they have up-to-date information on local services
and support for families with disabled children
You may have heard us use the word
‘Consultation’ but what does it mean?
A consultation is when we ask, or consult, you
about you ideas, views or opinions on a
specific topic.
For example at a recent drop-in we ask each
Young Carer to choose 3 sports they would most
like to try. This was a consultation exercise. From
this we can then pick out the 3 most popular
sports and see how or if we could provide them as
a Young Carers activity.
There is also a whole section devoted to School
and College that covers any problems a Young
Carer might face. There is also a section around
bullying with useful information on what to do if
you are being bullied.
The website also has a section for Parents. This
covers feelings parents may have around their
children being Young Carers as well as
information on Disabled Parents Rights.
Young Carers Net can be accessed 365 days a
year, which means there is always a source of
support available to you, whether its joining a chat
with other Young Carers, emailing a Support
Worker or even just reading articles and
information on the site.
The website address is:
http://www.youngcarers.net/
Come and join our Young Adult Carers group!
These drop-ins are a great opportunity for you to
meet other Young Adult Carers, aged between
16 - 30 years.
During the meetings you will have the opportunity
to put forward any ideas for future trips, events
and activities allowing you to shape the service
you receive and to tell us what you want. We will
provide the refreshments.
Past trips include Bowling, Laser Quest and Ice
Skating. We have been successful in securing a
funding grant to pay for these trips. It would be
great if you could get involved in the writing and
applying for future funding bids for the trips and
activities you want!
If you feel this is something you would like to get
involved in please come along to our next
Young Adult Carers Group meeting, which will
be taking place on Monday 24 February 2014
between 5.30 — 7.00pm at:
Wired Young and Adult Carers Centre
86 Sankey Street
Warrington
WA1 1SG
These drop-ins provide an opportunity to talk one
of our support workers, meet other Young Adult
Carers, chat and relax.
