mapagtitiisan at mapagtatagumpayan... maging
ang mga bagyo,
“When life
goes sour,
many of
us blame
God. ”
Towards
mga malalakas the Light
na hangin, at ABEL SOTO
maging ang pagdaan at paglipas
ng panahon…nangungusap pa rin
ang Diyos, kung nakikinig lamang
tayo.
***
Hindi
natin makikita ang Diyos sa iisang
ilawan, maliwanag at walang likuan. May mga panahon sa buhay
natin na ubod ng dilim. May mga
pagkakataon na tigang ang ating
lupa.

As we are about to end 2013,
I found this very fitting reflection for us Filipinos who have
constantly been embattled by
calamities and other tragedies. I hope that this reflection
brings our minds and hearts
towards the light.
When life goes sour, many
of us blame God. Or worse, we
abandon the God who sustains
us in life, as if what has happened to us is God’s fault. We
forget then that without God
we would never have survived
it at all. We sink into our little
daily depressions and call our
lot unbearable. We fail to take hold
of where we are, to deal with life
for ourselves. We stew in the juices
of yesterday. I ought to know; I’ve
done it time and time again.
The gift of life comes just where
we think death for us must surely
be. Then, we become the more of
ourselves. And we begin to realize
this very important and undeniable truism about life: that we figure
out later on that change and failure
were among the best friends of the
soul…
…And the Word became flesh,
and dwelt among us…” •

Christmas in our hearts
I
t’s a couple of days before Christmas and we can
see almost everyone rushing to prepare things
for the day celebrated by Christians in every
part of the world.
Malls are filled with last minute shoppers filling
their carts with goods to eat, to wear and to have
for the season. It seemed to be a must to have something for Christmas. We always have this fascination on new material things to have for the yuletide.
For all the preparations, it seems that the occasion will not push through without all these. We are
not even the Celebrant to do all these things, especially the buying and having material ones.
I remember a priest whom I had a chat with several years ago. He told me that while we are not even
the “star” of the season, we are too busy preparing
for Christmas at least with material objects. Many
of us, he said, are too “objective”, giving importance to
objects and inanimate things,
setting aside the preparation
for ourselves for the birthday
of Jesus Christ.
Commenting on the shopping spree that many of us do
at this time of the year, the
priest told me that we should
buy things not because others have it, but because we
Alvin H. Arceo
need it.
He added that we should
not be too obsessed with tangibles but instead should focus on having a clean heart
in preparation for Christmas.
Christmas is also a time
for food. We have too much
food that we forget to committing gluttony, a sin that
we should also be wary of.
The priest I had a talk with
despises restaurants offering smorgasbord packages or
the “eat-all-you-can” scheme
only to attract customers
that is only aimed for profit.
We are fond of aesthetics, what others see of us
as we are. We forget however that we don’t have to
paint a good picture of ourselves because it will
always show who and what we are. We don’t even
have to shout that an apple is a fruit for we know
what it is and its qualities.
They say that Christmas is a time for giving and
loving. This does not mean however that we are not
to give and love after Christmas. There is no need
also to have Christmas everyday for us to give and
love others just as we do during the season.
While on the rush, we need perhaps to pause for
a while and ponder how prepared are we, not with
what others might see but with what we have as followers and believers of the celebrant Christ.
Going back to the priest I was talking about, he
also told me that we should not forget the fact that
Jesus Christ was born on a stable and grew up living a simple life. As his followers, we should live
simple lives too, minus the frivolities.
The priest comes from a wealthy family. His parents are engaged in high-profile businesses. His
family has vast tracks of land in their hometown.
Despite their opulence, he chose to live a simple
way of life, the way priests are expected to have.
As we celebrate this year’s Christmas, I hope that
we can live up to the words of the priest I had talked
with. We can perhaps have our simple celebration of
Christ’s birthday without the “unnecessary things”
in our lives. We should put Christmas in our hearts.
I take this opportunity to extend by Christmas
felicitations to one and all!
As of this
writing
“We forget
however that
we don’t have
to paint a good
picture of ourselves because
it will always
show who and
what we are. ”

HOROSCOPE
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18)
When some kind of recognition or extra support comes along for you, you can see that your efforts are worthwhile. You may have the feeling that you are very much in-touch with those around you today. All of the support that you need in order to lead or complete some difficult task will be there for you. Wow, what a fantastic
natural high this can create for you! If you have a team that consistently backs you in your efforts, now would
be a good time to consider a little bonus for them. Your taste in art and gratefulness in general are heightened.
Your sense of value is to the fore and investment decisions can be beneficial. This evening is a great time to be
around friends. You may be passing around pictures of each other’s families.
ARIES (MAR. 21-APR. 19)
You may soon find a physical move or some other type of change pending. There may be an opportunity for
you to be in on the research that it takes to find new land for development. Consider the water systems and
how your company will take care to maintain the nearby water system. Putting yourself in a position to gather
and share information seems more important to you at this time. You understand hypothetical ideas and you
know how to present them to those around you. You may feel that your life is very exciting. You make a big
effort not to get your personal life too organized. Your idea is along the line of free flow. You may discover some
new talent or aptitude as you help a young person with his or her creative ideas tonight.
CANCER (JUN 22- JUL 22)
Taking the novel approach, trying out new ideas and advancing in breakthrough thinking could be what you are
all about just now. You just simply feel like being different, trying out something new and unusual. Perhaps your
life has felt too complacent lately. You may be getting bored with the status quo. Adding a little variety to one’s life
is what gives it spice and adds interest. You may want to go where no one has gone, or may just want to travel a less
traveled path. Growth comes from allowing your own self to make changes and to see things through different
eyes, so to speak. You are unafraid of taking a completely unfamiliar path or journey into the unknown. Fear not
what awaits you on the other side of any adventure for now; enjoy.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN 19)
Openings at work and changes in status give you new options. Follow rules as you work in areas that are new
to you. Work ethics are very important and should you choose to take time off work you will probably do so
by calling the time away, a vacation. You may find yourself very pleased at the choices you made recently
regarding home and property development. The undercover action of the law enforcement in your area lowers the likelihood of being disturbed by difficult people. You might even look for ways to help with school
social development programs. News about a health update or miracle vitamins and alternative therapies are
subjects of conversation. Stress levels can build now, so laugh at the little problems.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 21)
You may be feeling very good about yourself just now and appreciating your own better qualities. You may see value
in or feel love for an older person or someone in authority. You seem to appreciate feelings and movement in general
and could possibly find yourself looking for a little romance, or at least comparing notes and making plans with a
friend. You may just want to get out and about to walk or exercise at the noon break. It’s just a wonderful time to
be in the company of others in play or work. A particular job this afternoon may be just right for someone with your
credentials. You certainly know how to manage and direct others. Your particular ideas and thoughts are exceptionally good today and have not gone unnoticed.
LEO (JUL 23 - AUG. 23)
Expect some challenges coming to your attention today. You are prudent and you see the path ahead well enough
to take the right precautions. You work a problem as one would work a crossword puzzle. Emotion is the instigator
or the key that helps one recognize a problem exists. Cognitive thinking will find the truth of a matter and open
up any fears or needless worries that can be released. You are pretty much on target when it comes to creating
positive results. You may even discover the solution to a long-standing blockage or problem this day. Your mental
attitude is very positive. The universal energies today are inviting you to write. Perhaps this would be a good time
to see a pattern to your recent dreams. Begin a dream journal.
LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 23)
Sometimes we all take turns at being unaware of what or how we really feel about some person, place or thing.
This may not be the most appropriate time for you to make vocational or career decisions or to give practical advice
to those around you. However, you are one to bounce back rather quickly from any difficult quandary or experience and you will suddenly gain insights that other people long to see. Today you will have a new understanding.
The point of all this chatter is for you to give yourself time and patience before making any final decisions about
anything important, particularly with regard to work. You can impress an admirer with a kind word or note this
evening. Tonight is indeed a great time to spend with loved ones and family.
PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20)
Watch out, as an independent streak seems to be surfacing at this time. Others will admire your unique and
rather unusual way of perceiving things. Your sense of humor simply shines just now. You give incentive and
encouragement to others and you have a good attitude. You should find the benefit of new insights in your
living situation or life conditions. Your friends or associates may come to you for help, or you may find that circumstances call for you to reorganize and be more conservative. This should all go rather smoothly. Your more
reserved qualities make others wonder what has kept you so busy lately; you are not always so quiet. Whistle
while you work! Tonight you might dive into some cooking experiment: a candy recipe!
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21)
You may find yourself working extra hard to get things and people organized. There is a feeling of ambition and
responsibility. Wanting and needing to feel respected is an emotionally charged issue in your life at this time. You
are ready for work and you like to think that the workplace is ready for you. Your input is very important and you
like to feel that you make a difference. Achieving things, working especially hard and ambition are all things that
are especially important now. This afternoon can be shared with a loved one. Great feelings and knowing how
much you are loved should make this a very happy time. A young person needs a listening ear this evening. Give
this person plenty of your attention.
SCORPIO (OCT. 24- NOV. 21)
You should find yourself in top condition when it comes to any kind of mental activity. You are full of wit and
sharp ideas. This could be a time when you find some real discoveries in the idea department. Having a clearcut idea of what the public wants and needs at this time is beneficial to you in making practical decisions with
regard to group issues. Expect to make some crystal-clear decisions that affect others. You may find yourself
wading cautiously through some difficulties, blocks or hot spots and not everyone will share your point of
view. This will all work out just fine however, so relax--disputes and doubt come with the territory of whatever
it is you are trying to do just now. This afternoon is a time of celebration. Your success is obvious.
TAURUS (APR. 20-MAY 20)
If for any reason you have been procrastinating or having a conversation with an authority figure concerning anything, now would be an ideal time to communicate honestly. The ethers of the universe are working with you in
whatever changes you desire. Now is a time you can put your practical insights into understandable words. Taking
care of business is a major theme where your emotional orientation is concerned. You crave organization and
practicality and you want to get things accomplished. You aim to have a place for everything and everything in its
place--and anything that gets in the way gets on your nerves. Health and work goals take on greater importance
this afternoon. You understand and are sensitive to others’ needs tonight.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEP.22)
You may take on the job of orienting a newcomer to your work area. Your humor may be overshadowed only by
your rather eccentric behavior just now. Those around you appreciate your independence and unique qualities.
This should give you some new ways of looking at things or discover the changes you want for your living situation.
Feel free to allow yourself to be creative today. Since you will not find these days coming too often, you should not
ignore the opportunity to let your imagination loose. Maybe a proposal or new advertising idea is in the making.
Your ability to risk something may take you into an enchanting place. If you are inclined to enjoy murder mysteries,
this place might just set the scene for a good mystery.

KC Concepcion third party sa break up
nina Luis Manzano at Jennylyn Mercado?
H
indi man diretsahan,
nasagot na ang tanong
kung bakit
nag-break sina
Luis Manzano at
Jennylyn Mercado.
Linked ngayon si
Luis kay KC Concepcion.
Ayaw isipin ni
KC Concepcion na
porke nagkakalapit
sila ni Luis Manzano, nanliligaw
na ang panganay
ni Governor Vilma
Santos-Recto.
“Hindi ba puwedeng
friends?” rason ni KC nang
ipa-interview siya ng VAA
para sa movie nila ni Gov. ER
Ejercito na Shoot to
Kill: Boy Golden.
Seksing-seksi man
ang dating ni KC sa
movie, natuwa siya
sa gesture nina Direk
Chito Roño, Gov. ER at
executive producer ng
movie dahil tinanong
siya kung ano ang limitations niya.
“Marami ngang
nagtatanong kung
ano ’yung love scenes
namin. Ako naman,
happy na masasabi na hindi
kailangan ng ganoong eksena
para lang may added value
or para ibenta? Kasi hindi
naman siya for kilig talaga.
More of ’yung… Kahit paano,
acting piece siya for me. Iba
pa rin ’yung pinagagawa sa
akin doon kaya ’yung love
nakikipagsuntukan at barilan
sa mga kalaban.•

CONCEPCION
KC Concepcion ayaw pang mag-commit kanino mang lalaki
kanya ni Paulo Avelino as Christmas gift.
Tinulungan din daw siya ng
aktor na mag-set-up ng tree in a
way by giving instructions.
try naShoot to Kill: Boy Golden,
kung saan ay leading lady siya ni
Gov. Jorge “ER” Ejercito.
Hiningan ng reaksyon ng
press si KC tungkol sa pahayag
ni ER na ’pag ’di siya nanalong
best actress, dinaya siya.
“Hindi naman. Si Miss
Eugene (Domingo) po. Ilan po ba
kami?
“I never expected po talaga
na, ’yun nga, ’yung mga award.
Sanay ako sa Star of the Night
award,” natatawang say ng
young actress.
niya tungkol dito.
“I’m happy for him, na finally
nakahanap siya ng babaing...
siguro, nahanap din niya ’yung
katapat niya, nakahanap siya ng
match para sa kanya, I’m happy
for him.”
Ini-expect ba niya na magaasawa this soon si Lino?
“Yeah. I was waiting for the
time na talagang makahanap
siya ng pakakasalan nya. Lalo
na ngayon, ’di ba, may posisyon
na siya sa politics? So, kailangan
siguro ’yung politics, eh.
Siya naman, wala pa sa isip
niya ang pag-aasawa, lalo pa
nga’t hindi siya committed as
of now. Besides marami pa raw
siyang gustong gawin.
She’s 28 at kaedad niya sina
Heart Evangelista at Anne Curtis. Lahat sila, hindi pa naman
daw ikinakasal. •
Bakbakan sa takilya ng MMFF
B
akbakang umaatikabo ang takilya
sa darating na Metro Manila Film
Festival. Kris Aquino versus Vice
Ganda at Daniel Padilla versus uncle
Robin Padilla.
Sino ang mananalo sa kanila?
Robin Padilla stars in the actiondrama “10,000 Hours” while the son
of his brother Rommel, Daniel Padilla,
stars in the horror flick, “Pagpag”. A
Daniel defender says that the edge of
their idol is that he is paired with his
tried and tested partner, Kathryn Bernardo, and their love team will be hard
to beat, what with so many Kathniel
fans supporting it.
But Robin diehards say that “10,000
Hours” will surely appeal to fans of
hard action films who haven’t seen this
kind of local film for some time now.
Robin himself is proud that he is able
to do this kind of meaningful, timely
movie of high quality, filmed in Amsterdam at that. His producer Neil Arce, is
also a hands on executive producer who
made sureangel
no stone is left unturned for
locsin
them to come
up with a film that will
not only win awards but also rake in the
moolah at the box office as it’s a sure
crowdpleaser, with slambang action
scenes as well as touching dramatic
scenes involving family drama.
“At hindi naman kami dapat
pagsabungin ni Daniel dahil magkaibang-magkaiba ang pelikula
namin,” says Binoe. “Nananakot sila,
kami naman, political drama-thriller
ang ’10,000 Hours’ na loosely based
sa nangyari kay Sen. Ping Lacson na
nawala for 10,000 hours after he was
hunted down by his political enemies.
Napanood na niya ang movie and
natutuwa kami dahil he is very pleased

NEGO-KARTS from Page 8
Before the awarding ceremony, Second District Board Member Anthony
Torres gave a few tips to the Nego-kart
beneficiaries.
Torres also urged the small-scale
entrepreneurs to set aside a part of
their income for unexpected happenings like illnesses of family members or
accidents.
He also announced that the Provincial Government is setting a challenge
for the recipients to increase their incomes.
These small-time vendors will be
monitored by the Provincial Government and all those who attained success in their business will be rewarded
motorcycles for them to use.
“I hope that these 72 nego-karts will
someday be 72 motorcycles. That’s why
Governor Pineda encourages everyone
of you to work harder and put these mo-
bile carts to good use,” said Torres.
Some of the lucky people who were
included in the first batch of beneficiaries of Nego-karts were also present in
the turn-over program.
Lapricina Canlas, 53, from Brgy.
Bulaon was very happy to tell that the
nego-kart given to her made a huge difference in her business.
Canlas said “Before, I used to put up
an immobile stand in front of a school
selling street foods and make P300 a
day. Now, I can go around our village
giving me more customers. I now earn
bigger than my husband.”
The same story was told by Heidi
Cruz, a fish and vegetable vendor from
Lubao.
“I have three kids and two of them
are now studying. It is really a big help
that I can now go and sell vegetables
and fish on other places unlike before.”
Governor Pineda delivered an inspirational message to these entrepreneurs before she awarded the units.
“Never ever think lowly of yourselves. Don’t think that you can’t do
great things because you did not finish
your studies.”
“I, myself, am a farmer’s daughter
and I never thought that I would be a
governor. You just have to persevere,
work hard and look for opportunities
and luck—I assure you, you will succeed,” said Pineda.
She also told the vendors that not because they were given mobile carts, they
will necessarily sell fishballs or balut.
Pineda said “look for something you
can sell with a high demand in your barangays and remember to always keep
sanitation in mind.”
She also urged the recipients to be
members of Philippine Health Insur-
ance Corp. or PhilHealth.
This will surely lessen their burdens when it comes to health problems
whenever they go to the nearest district
or the provincial hospital, Pineda said.
Nestor Tolentino, 41, a fish vendor
from Sasmuan, is very thankful for the
Nego-kart unit that he received.
“Governor Lilia has helped a lot of
poor families and I thank her for giving
us these blessings and early Christmas
gifts,” said Tolentino.
“I will do whatever I can to surpass
her challenge and give my family a better life,” he added.
There were 40 recipients on the first
batch of Nego-kart turn-over during the
celebration of Pampanga day, another
nine beneficiaries were awarded yesterday and 23 more are to be given on the
last batch completing all 72 Nego-kart
beneficiaries. •

BCDA, US Embassy sign pact on Clark veterans cemetery
By Charlene A. Cayabyab
CLARK FREEPORT -- The
state-run Bases Conversion
and Development Authority
(BCDA) and the United States
Embassy have recently signed
a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that formalizes the
pact between the Philippines
and the US on the maintenance
of the Clark Veterans Cemetery
(CVC) here.
The MOU was signed by
BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer Arnel Paciano
Casanova and US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip
Goldberg. The signing was
witnessed by Department of
Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary
Albert del Rosario at the DFA
headquarters in Manila.
The seven-hectare CVC
was established in 1947 as a
final resting place for American
veterans and Filipino scouts. It
is said to contain the remains
of more than 8,600 US servicemen, Filipino scouts and their
dependents.
After Mt. Pinatubo erupted
in 1991, Clark Air Base was
abandoned along with the
CVC. While attempts had been
made by volunteers to restore
the cemetery without US assistance, the MOU sets the stage
for CVC’s full restoration.
Under the agreement, the
US will provide a $5 million fund
for the rehabilitation of CVC,
while the Philippine government, through the BCDA, maintains ownership of the land.
Casanova mentioned the
importance of the cemetery
saying, “It is but fitting and honorable to remember those who
have fought for our freedom,
our liberty and our democracy,
[and] we are honored to stand
side by side with the US government in upholding these ideals.”
For his part, Ambassador
Goldberg said that the MOU will
pave the way for the long-term
maintenance of CVC, and noted
the importance of the cemetery
in honoring American and Filipino war heroes.
“Many men and women
have answered the call to defend the values that we cherish,
and many have willingly offered
their lives for the good of countless others,” Goldberg said.
“Those interred [at CVC]
served faithfully and honorably
for their countries, and their service and sacrifices will always
be remembered,” he added. •
ANGELES CITY--American-based burger chain Wendy’s has
opened its 39th store at SM City Clark (SMCK) on Thursday.
Wendy’s SMCK treated Kapampangans with its limited
edition “Baconator,” the chain’s premium double bacon cheeseburger.
Lawrence Derpo, area marketing manager of Wendy’s
Philippines, said the “Baconator” is made from 100 percent
fresh, never frozen North American beef.
“Our Baconator is available only during the Christmas season,” Derpo said during the opening on Thursday.
Derpo said they chose Clark because of Central Luzon’s
active market.
“In the coming months, we’ll try to create value meals to
accommodate the budget of our consumers,” Derpo said.
Derpo added that they’re eyeing to put up more stores in
the Luzon area like Baguio.
Wendy’s was founded in 1969 by Dave Thomas. It was
named after his daughter Melinda Lou Thomas whose nickname
was “Wendy.” •
9 more beneficiaries
receive ‘Nego-Karts’
By BEA JEANNEL A. DELOS REYES
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Nine more
beneficiaries from Pampanga’s Second District
were given Nego-Karts and financial support
by Governor Lilia Pineda last Friday.
The second batch of 72 recipients gathered at the Capitol grounds eagerly waiting for
the awarding of the Nego-Kart units costing
P11,000 each.
According to Francis Maslog, head of
the Provincial Manpower Training Center
(PMPTC), the budget for the materials for the
mobile cart units were from the Department of
Labor and Employment.
The materials were, then, assembled into
72 Nego-karts by the PMPTC welding trainees
for six weeks.

DECONGEST from Page 1
PamCham’s advocacy, dubbed
“Decongest Metro Manila for the
Country’s Sake,” was made in the
midst of the recent calamities that
struck the nation such as typhoon
Yolanda and the earthquake in Bohol.
The launch coincided with the
business group’s forum on disaster
entitled “Disaster Management Forum: Understanding the Economic
and Financial Impact of Natural
and Man-made Disasters” graced by
Philippine Institute of Volcanology
and Seismology Director Dr. Renato
LAYUG from Page 2
Solidum, Jr. at Max’s Restaurant in
Barangay Magliman, this city.
Laus said that the government
should seriously consider spreading
financial and vital government installations outside Metro Manila to
ensure that the country and its government will continue to function
should a disaster strike the “very
heart” of the Metro.
“It is like putting all the eggs in
one basket,” Laus said referring to
the concentration of economic and
government functionalities in Metro
Manila.
Earlier, PamCham president Jim
Jimenez said that the advocacy aims
to raise awareness on such disasters
that may hit big businesses and populace in Manila.
The advocacy, Jimenez said, is
a preventive move in light of the
worse-case scenarios that may happen in case the country is hit by disasters.
Laus, for his part, PamCham said
the “decongest” advocacy is a “startup move” for others to follow. •
HEIGHTENED ALERT from Page 1
Chief Supt. Raul Petrasanta has placed all police units in
the region under alert, advising all police personnel to take
precautionary measures.
Petrasanta also reminded provincial and city directors
to tighten the security of police camps and offices including
vital installations, economic key points and places of convergence such as malls and public markets.
Petrasanta earlier sought an audience with different security managers of malls and discussed with them their respective preparations especially with the influx of shoppers
during the holidays.
“This is a preemptive measure to ensure the safety of
shoppers,” he pointed out, adding that the focus is not on
terror but criminal elements who will take advantage of the
situation.
Petrasanta said that police units in areas where major
shopping malls are located have been beefed-up, including
Subic and Clark Freeport in Olongapo City and Mabalacat
City, respectively, Angeles City, Tarlac City, Cabanatuan City
and Bulacan.
Petrasanta also cancelled Christmas and New Year’s
break of policemen except in emergency situations.
However, he said the situation will be upgraded into full
alert should the need arise. •

retablo along Upper Thompson Road in Singapore.
The priory is under the Society of Saint Pius

French archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The SSPX
has presence in various countries in Europe and

Layug said he was honored to have been
given the trust to craft and install the new altar,
which was a fusion of baroque and classical art.
He said that the project has given him the opportunity to showcase Filipino craftsmanship in

The Betis-born woodcarver is favorite artisan for local churches in Bulacan. He was able
to accomplish dozens of projects, including altar
works in Calumpit and San Rafael towns where
his works on main altars of now adorn churches

He was also commissioned to work on the altar and images inside the Divine Mercy Shrine

the majestic altar at the Saint Joseph Parish in
Taguig City.

abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), the beginning of the
GAA-as-Release-Document regime, and the
unprecedented support for disaster rehabilitation and preparation, especially in the
wake of this year’s calamities.
“In a very real way, the 2014 budget is one
that responds aptly to the times, one born of
fruitful, sincere dialogue between the public
and the Aquino administration. For instance,
the clamor to abolish PDAF has persisted for
decades, and only under this Administration
was this call successfully heeded. It is exactly
this pattern of citizen engagement that we
believe in and aspire to, where Filipinos are
further empowered to be our active partners
in ensuring governance reform and inclusive
growth in the country,” Abad said. •
