Charlotte, NC 704-333-3133 PFC Sales and Purchasing, 2011 Vegas Fastener Show For those who may not know, Porteous Fastener Company was founded by Anne and Bud Porteous in 1966. They “Bet the Farm” so to speak when he opened a 2000 square foot fastener warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. As with most start up businesses, the first years were a struggle but Bud made sure his employee’s and suppliers were paid, before ever taking a salary for himself. That is how it all started. Bud’s reputation for fairness was the cornerstone on which PFC was built. Today Barry and Bob Porteous run the family business. Together they strive to continue their fathers’ legacy and build upon that reputation. “Operating the business has certainly changed over the years, but our philosophies have remained the same”, says Bob Porteous. “My dad was probably the best salesman that I’d ever seen and he had a tremendous reputation for being honest and ethical. The PFC Team is committed to these same principles. The PFC Vision Statement reads: It’s all about reputation. We want everyone who comes in contact with our organization to say, “That’s a helluva company!” That statement, along with PFC’s Core Operating Principles and Strategic Directives were written during a long day of brainstorming by 50 of PFC’s management personnel from all departments and all parts of the country. It was a day filled with heartfelt ideas, passion and even some tears. Director of Procurement, Jim Jordan said, “It was an awesome day. I go to it often. It will certainly be handy, particularly in a year when there we will be a barrage of campaign ads, pledges and promises for change. Sound familiar? What changes our lives is what we do and who we are. Yet we all hold out for hope that our elected officials will begin to get it, do what they promise, take the best interests of Americans to heart, affect positive change, and just maybe, help the American public out along the way. Stay tuned. I saw a comedian the other night. He was not only very funny, but as comics often do, he cut to the bone when it came to social commentary and the affairs of government. He was exasperated because as he said, “even when our two parties agree (which is seldom) they can’t get the job done”. I laughed and then buried my face in my hands and wanted to cry at the truth of the matter. The gridlock and over the top partisan politics has reached such a garishly farcical point that literally one does not know whether to laugh or cry. In November, we will choose from one party’s, wounded, in over his head, candidate and the other party’s candidate whoever it is, will not really be liked by the majority of the party. Laugh or cry? As the year unfolds, I am sure I will take solace in the quote that started this piece and the knowledge that in spite of little help from our government our economy continues to heal slowly, albeit with the weight of the world on its shoulders. 2011 was a good year for Sphere 1 and the majority of our members and preferred suppliers. We saw double-digit growth in purchases from members to our suppliers, and tremendous participation in our two flagship programs, Gateway for Growth and Sphere 1 University. He has over ten years of experience in the industry, most recently as the Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, Strategy and Sean Miller Operations for Tasco Industries. He will be based out of Waukesha, WI. Generac Power Systems marked the end of the year with announcement of additional investment in its business through acquisition, expansion, and infrastructure improvements. These moves came during a year that saw unprecedented demand for the company’s home and industrial standby power systems. In October 2011 Generac acquired Magnum Power Products, a leading manufacturer of highquality light towers and mobile generators. The acquisition helps to diversify Generac’s overall product portfolio and open new opportunities for both Generac and Magnum products. In November Generac announced the creation of more than 400 new jobs across all Generac locations in Wisconsin. The new jobs are a direct result of the increased demand for Generac portable and home backup generators in the wake of severe weather and enduring underinvestment in the nation’s power grid. The year was capped off by finalizing plans for a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion of the headquarters building in Waukesha, Wis. The facility will house an R&D center of excellence, while modernizing the space to increase its capacity and efficiency to meet business needs. Generac will break ground on this renovation and expansion in the first quarter of 2012. Justin DeBree a surfer from Cocoa Beach, joined Makita Power Tools in June. Retired Vice President, Jay Hebert once said in a sales meeting, “People buy from people they like!” This statement continues to ring true, but has developed into something more over the years. “People buy from people they trust!” says Barry Porteous. “We had and still have the best people. We find quality people and they stay. The average tenure of our Regional Sales Managers is 22 years and with that comes stability and commitment to our customers.” Kevin Chavis, Western Regional Manager adds, “It’s important for me to know what my customers need in order for me to help with their success. They have first hand knowledge of what’s happening on job sites or with inspectors. If there are changes in our industry, they are the first to know, and I want to be the one they trust to help.” PFC has long been recognized as a leader in the fastener industry. Providing “First Class Service” goes well beyond taking an order and shipping it complete. It is the simple things like clearly labeled packaging and adding customer part numbers to packing slips and invoices. It is doing what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it. It is striving to understand and exceed your customers’ expectations. It is meeting your customer on Saturday at the warehouse because he has an emergency.
