President’s Message
We are pleased to report that Y2012
marked our highest purchase value
with our Preferred Suppliers since the
launch of our organization in 1999. We
have experienced three consecutive
years of double-digit group purchase
growth; a vast improvement over 20082009 industry lows. The business of
our individual members and preferred
suppliers appears to be improving with a
positive economic outlook by most.
We held our 7th annual Board of
Director and Preferred Supplier Advisory
Meeting in San Antonio, Texas last
month at the JW Marriott Hill Country.
The facility is gorgeous and marks the
spot for our annual meeting in 2014. Our
gathering was well represented by 11
preferred supplier partners. A recap of
our discussion topics will be presented at
our May 2013 annual meeting.
A sincere thanks to the following
participants for a wonderful meeting,
candid discussion, and very useful
feedback:
• Brighton-Best: Steve Andrasik
• FallTech: Rodney McKee
• Franklin International: Scott Bowen
• Kraft Tool: Jack Rohr
• Irwin/Lenox/Rubbermaid: Sean Cassidy
• Norton/Saint Gobain: Jim O’Connor

• Stanley Black & Decker: Dave Fabris
• Vulcan Threaded Products: Bill Buckner
Preparation for our May 2013 Annual
Meeting at the JW Marriott Starr Pass
in Tucson, Arizona is underway. Some

needed. Confidence in our reputation and
5-year warranty likely helped back up
the purchase decision.
We went through the economic obstacle by launching a new 3-1/2” framing nailer series in 2010 that is available
for plastic collation (NR90AEPR), paper
collation (NR90ADPR) and wire weld
collation (NR90AF). This series has
exploded in the market as an affordable
framing nailer option to the NR83A2
that is lightweight, yet performs solid on
the job. Most recently in March 2013,
Hitachi launched the NV90AG 3-1/2 coil
framing nailer as an extension of this
popular series. It serves as an entry level
option to the well-established NV83A2,
for those looking for an affordable coil
framer that delivers on Hitachi’s reputation.
Ask your Hitachi sales rep today

Hahn Systems, LLC, announced plans to expand its headquarters, creating up to 20 new jobs by 2016. The homegrown-Hoosier company will invest $900,000 to purchase
and equip a 27,000 square-foot facility located at 6312
Southeastern Ave. in Indianapolis. Hahn Systems will house
its Southeastern Supply Co. (SESCO) division in the new
facility, which is expected to be operational by June. The company, which employs 50 people
in Indiana, has already begun hiring additional sales, customer service and delivery associates.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Hahn Systems, LLC up to $140,000
in conditional tax credits and up to $20,000 in training grants based on the company’s job
creation plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the
company is not eligible to claim incentives. The city of Indianapolis approved additional tax
abatement at the request of Develop Indy.
Hahn Systems, in its 75th year of operation, is headquartered in Indianapolis with branches in
Elkhart and Fort Wayne Ind., Louisville, Ky. and Livonia, Mich. Each Hahn branch is anchored with a warehouse facility (generally 3,000-5,000 sq ft) with our major stocking location
containing over 40,000 square feet. Hahn supplies construction and industrial tools, including
nails, staples, abrasives and fasteners. The company added lines of lumber, dry wall and other
masonry supplies to its service offerings through the purchase of SESCO in June 2012.
“Hahn Systems is excited to be making this investment in Indianapolis as part of the aggressive growth plans we have for our SESCO division,” said Scott Brown, president of Hahn
Systems. “SESCO will be increasing its office and warehouse capacity by more than 70 percent and will look to hire additional personnel to keep pace with forecasted revenue increases.
We feel this is an ideal time to be investing in Indiana for the long term and are thankful for
the state and local assistance required to make this investment a reality.”

Going into our fourth year as Sphere 1
members, DHC Supplies is very pleased
with the success we have had as a partner.
Membership has brought us closer to our
suppliers.
The Gateway for Growth program
has helped us connect with vendors and
develop plans for success in promoting their
products. We always consider Sphere 1
suppliers first when looking to bring in new
products. We have been able to add new
Sphere 1 vendors while moving away from
some of our non-member suppliers. Since
becoming members, we have increased the
number of Sphere 1 vendors that we do
business with from 31 in 2010 to 43 at the
end of 2012. Some opportunities offered by
our preferred supplier have helped close the
gap between the “Big Box” competition and
their buying power.
Programs like Sphere 1 University have
provided our employees with a very cost
effective source of training and product
knowledge. It is very easy
for employees to login
in and take a course and

the Blue Bucks paid gives them some
extra incentive to do so. It has also been
an excellent way for vendors to introduce
new products. The courses can usually relay
information more effectively than a product
knowledge meeting and being able to go
back and watch the course information is
also a great way to refresh your memory on
a product.
As an employee owned company each
one of our employees has a vested interest
in our everyday operation. We are always
looking for ways to be more profitable
and utilizing the benefits of Sphere 1 is
one of the easiest ways to accomplish this.
Joining Sphere 1 has been one of the best
moves DHC Supplies has made during
these very difficult times for the building
and construction industries. The resources
provided to members are priceless. And
being compensated for doing what we were
already doing is just the icing on the cake.

Generac Power Systems® recently acquired and
reopened a long-dormant factory in Jefferson,
Wisconsin. The 250,000-square-foot plant in
Jefferson’s North Industrial Park was constructed
in 1995 but had been shuttered since 2009. That closing resulted in hundreds of workers in
Jefferson losing their jobs, and dealt a severe blow to a small town already struggling with the
effects of a down economy.
In September of last year, Generac reacquired the 19-acre facility, retrofitted it extensively,
and now the factory is bustling once again, manufacturing the new OneWash™ power washer,
an innovative new power washer that allows consumers to adjust the intensity of the spray
with the turn of a dial, to perform a wide variety of cleaning tasks. Best of all, the company
has hired more than 300 new employees—and counting—from the Jefferson area, providing a
much-needed lift to the local economy.
The lights are now back on at 900 North Parkway in Jefferson, WI. And the future looks very
bright indeed. Preferred Supplier News
Stanley Black & Decker Acquires Infastech
Last month, Stanley Black & Decker
completed the strategic acquisition of
Infastech, a leading global manufacturer and distributor of specialty engineered fastening
technologies headquartered in Hong Kong. As part of the Infastech business, Stanley Black &
Decker acquired ELCO Construction Products, based in Decorah, Iowa with annual global
revenues of $30M. Founded in 1922, ELCO’s product lines have helped establish ELCO as a
fastening solutions leader in the construction industry. Moreover, ELCO’s specially threaded
fasteners complement Powers line of anchors. David Raskoskie will continue to lead the ELCO team. “Together, we have
an unparalleled stable of brands and comprehensive, world-class solutions
supported by the best teams in the industry,” says David. “The ELCO team
has a go to market strategy that involves a national network of independent
representative groups that complements the Stanley Black & Decker strategy,”
says Robert Raff, President of North America Commercial, Stanley Black & Decker, CDIY. In November of 2012, Stanley Black & Decker acquired Abmast, marking an integral step
towards achieving one of SBD’s top strategic priorities: Power tool accessory expansion. Located in North America, Abmast is a manufacturer of abrasive products, and a key
manufacturer of resin-bonded abrasive wheels. Founded in 1981, the company employs
approximately 150 associates and is the current supplier of DeWALT HPP bonded abrasives.
Abmast and Stanley Black & Decker have had a joint venture partnership since 2007 and
this acquisition will help the two companies further penetrate the Abrasive market. As a fully
combined organization, we will leverage each other’s strengths to build a combined new
product development and manufacturing center of excellence for abrasives and we will also
have the ability to manufacture in North America close to demand, improving service level for
large Industrial customers.
DeWALT has very high performance bonded abrasive products
and now being prime in our largest market, we see a huge
opportunity for growth in this very strategic category.
Intertape Polymer Group Inc. has announced
plans to relocate its Columbia, South Carolina
manufacturing operations within the same region.
The new facility will include state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment which will allow Intertape to
realize significant productivity gains, provide a better working environment for employees,
and benefit from advanced environmental controls. The relocation process and subsequent
shutdown of the existing Columbia facility is expected to occur over a two year period and be
completed in the first half of 2015.
The Columbia plant dates back to the 1960’s and its competitive position has become increasingly unsustainable. The layout of the buildings is not compatible with the design of the new
manufacturing equipment being purchased.
“Intertape will be undertaking its largest single facility improvement in many years. This
major investment of approximately $26 million in South Carolina is an unequivocal longterm
commitment to the tape business, our employees, and the State of South Carolina,”
said Gregory Yull, President and CEO of Intertape. “We anticipate annual productivity
gains and energy savings in excess of $13 million starting in the first half of 2015 with
the first full year effects to be realized in 2016. The new facility will also allow us to
enhance our position in a highly competitive industry. Finally, we are particularly pleased
with how this initiative will maximize safety for our employees and lower the impact of
our operations on the environment.”

Sales Representative Mike Messenger and Makita Sales Representative
Mike Houston recently saw their work pay off. They visited an end user that had been
resistant to “new” products or sales people and liked the “hassle free” shopping at the local
Home Depot for multiple manufacturers. Once they were shown the solutions and service they
could offer them the end user converted well over 70% of their tooling from a non-preferred
supplier to Makita Power Tools. Great job to the Mike & Mike Team in Las Vegas!

Recently a family member was diagnosed
with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Although a vast
majority of the Cystic Fibrosis cases are
diagnosed as infants my relative was one of
the few cases that stayed dormant in his body
until he turned 18. As you can imagine we
have been shocked as he is in perfect physical
shape from varsity high school sports.
You may or may not know that cystic fibrosis
is a life-threatening disease that affects the
respiratory and digestive systems of about
30,000 Americans. Just two generations ago,
most children with CF didn’t live long enough
to attend elementary school. Today, nearly
half of people with CF are age 18 or older.
Impressive progress has been made, but so
much more needs to be done, as we continue
to lose precious lives to this disease every day.
the CF Foundation. As a participant I have
committed to raise $5,000. Today I am asking
you to help me reach my goal by joining me
as a walker and/or making a contribution.
Your support will help fund vital CF research
and medical programs helping find a cure for
the disease.
We need your help…. Unlike most other
diseases that affect a large percentage of the
American population CF does not receive
federal funds for research. The funding of
research that is done to cure the disease comes
from friends like you. We need your help.
Making a donation and/or joining us in the
walk is simple. Go to this link and complete
the information.
On May 18th we will be walking in the
Great Strides event on the Georgia Tech
campus, raising money and awareness for

Sphere 1 University combines with BlueVolt delivering
Live Webcasts to “step up” the training process!
We are always looking for new ways to increase the value
of your Sphere 1 membership. We know that training to
better sell products is an everyday challenge, and now
we have an excellent way to help our Preferred Suppliers
reach Sphere 1 Distributor Members with “live” training.
Many of our Preferred Suppliers are now using webcasts
hosted in Sphere 1 University where they can demonstrate
their products to a live audience without leaving their office
or incurring the cost of travel. Member-Students get the
opportunity to ask questions and chat live with the trainers!
A live webcast provides our Preferred Suppliers with a
highly engaging interactive environment to showcase
or launch their products, and quickly reach Sphere 1
Distributor Members.
Key items included in a live webcast:
• Professional broadcast host Sarah Bagby, raises the bar
from a typical webinar.
• HTML invitations with ‘add to calendar’ feature make it
easy for attendees to register and remember.
• The presentation is archived and lives on as a course
in Sphere 1 University with rewards for successful
completion, allowing students who could not participate in
the live event to learn all the details!
• Real-time polls, surveys and chat further engages
attendees during the webcast.
Below are some of our preferred suppliers who have
recently taken advantage of webcast service.

Diamond Products Webcast: Fast-Cut SLR Cut-Off Saw and Diamond Blades
Jim Palmer stated he felt "The professionalism of Sarah. She did a great job keeping the questions and flow
of the presentation going," lead to the positive webcast experience.
Franklin Webcast: The Titebond Advantage
The Titebond Sphere 1 University Webcast run through BlueVolt was a tremendous experience as well as
being a success. The advice and assistance from Sarah Bagby and the BlueVolt team along with an “interview” setup allowed for a great open discussion about Franklin International, our products and the regulatory environment that we
all have to operate in. It was a fantastic way to reach a large group of people and the tracking information provided to us the knowledge that our investment was worth the time and money. We will definitely look to continue our participation moving forward.
Powers Fasteners Webcast: Applications By Trade & Packaging By Application
In response to what did you like best about the webcast experience Jack Zenor
said, "Sarah Bagby's professional help. She was both inspiring and motivational.
Girl is always positive...and that's infectious!"
Trimble Spectra Precision Webcast: The Next Generation of Universal & Grade Lasers
Trimble Spectra Precision was excited about introducing its new UL633 Universal Laser with easy to use
hand held keypad technology and a multitude of applications. Their challenge was how do they educate
distribution on the ease of use and the applications of this truly Universal laser? Turning to the Sphere 1
University new webinars was the answer. “We were able to communicate to hundreds of members live with video’s and a power point
the features of this amazing unit” says Larry Lemer Trimble’s Sphere 1 Regional Manager. The presentation was so successful we
even made “CD’ copies for distribution in worldwide training session. The webinar was easy to organize, simple to attend, and cost
effective. We will certainly be doing more of the Webinars with Sphere 1 University.
Werner Ladder Webcast: Climb Ahead with New Business Opportunities
“The Sphere 1 webcast program is an easy and extremely efficient way to connect with members. The
Sphere 1 and BlueVolt teams walk you through every step of the process and professionally facilitate the
event. We were able to effectively communicate valuable information to 85 distributor members - via
Powerpoint and interactive discussion – in just 40-45 minutes. It’s a great tool to communicate a consistent message in a timely way!”
