Help Needed for Louisiana Flood Victims
The Diocese of Palm Beach and other dioceses around
the country are helping its brothers, sisters and Catholic
Charities in Louisiana that have been impacted by the
recent severe flooding in that state. Multiple Catholic
Charities in the affected regions as well as Catholic

thousands of people in their communities. As many as
60,000 homes have been damaged and thousands of
people have been displaced. The Catholic Church in the
U.S. is asking those who are able to donate to support
the work of Catholic Charities in Louisiana. Donations

FYI: September 11, 2016 – 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today we mark the 15th Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the plane crash into the
Pentagon and the plane crash in Shanksville, Pa. How appropriate are the words of the Entrance Antiphon for today’s Mass, “Give
peace, O Lord, to those who wait for you.”
We live in a day and time where violence and terrorism seem to be second nature. We truly need justice and peace to take the place
of violence and terror!
Justice and peace begin with an attitude and a behavior which is consistent. In the First Reading from Today’s Mass, the people of
Israel have given in to their own devices and turned away from God. They have quickly forgotten the promises they made to God in
the Covenant and have made for themselves a god who caters to their willfulness and wantonness. It sounds like a lot of people in
the world today! If we want justice and peace, the first thing to do is to turn to God in a spirit of humility and penance. We need
people of holiness like Moses to intercede for us for God’s forgiveness. We need to radically change our attitude and behavior and
fully embrace the promises we have made to God.
The second Reading taken from St. Paul’s Letter to Timothy again addresses the need to change attitude and behavior. St. Paul
describes himself as formerly being a blasphemer, a persecutor and arrogant. Yet the grace of God has mercifully lifted him up to
grace and redemption. St. Paul turns away from arrogance and pride and in turn is filled with gratitude and humility.
The Gospel for today’s Mass is perhaps one of the most beautiful illustrations of God’s compassion and forgiveness. The story of
the Prodigal Son is known amongst Christians and non-Christians alike. I personally believe that at various times in our lives, we
live out the principal roles. There are times we are the ‘father’ who waits for the younger son to come to his senses. There are times
we are the ‘older’ son who can’t quite understand the ‘father’s’ compassion. And there are times we adopt the attitude of the
‘younger’ son.
What are the lessons for each of us? The answers are varied and unique for each of us. However, I believe that the purpose of this
story is that God (‘father’) is One who waits for us. He doesn’t give up on us even when we are the furthest distance from him. God
doesn’t wring his hands and say ‘enough’ even though if you and I were in His place, we might do just that! He is always there
because He loves unconditionally. The ‘older’ son is the one who accepts and fulfills to the best of his ability the promises he has
made to God. Perhaps he is the one who cannot understand why evil is allowed to exist in our world, or perhaps he can’t fully grasp
the idea that God is compassionate and just. The beautiful dialogue between the ‘father’ and ‘older’ son tried to address the ‘older’
son’s indignation. The ‘father’ acknowledges that the ‘older’ son has been dutiful and good, but still the father asks him to consider
the tremendous event which has taken place: “He was dead, but now alive, He was blind and now can see.”
Finally, the ‘younger’ son is like so many in the world today. He has been brought up with values and morals and yet chooses to
reject them in a spirit of selfishness and entitlement. But a catharsis takes place, everything he places such value in is taken away.
He is lost and adrift. He comes to his senses as the story progresses. Recognizing how he has disrespected his father, he hopes for
minimal benefits. You and I might think that is all he deserves. Yet the ‘father’ surpasses all expectation and welcome this son back
into his life with compassion and love.
As Catholics we are called to a life of love and compassion. Love surpasses hate every day of the week.
Let us truly strive to be all God wants us to be: happy, loved, forgiven and lifted up.
Brothers and sisters, while we have time, let us do good. ~Fr. Dan
Message from “40 Days for Life”:
“If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do
them” John 13:17
After washing the feet of the apostles, Jesus told them to go
and be servants in HIS home. All of us need to be Christ-like
and servants in our efforts to end abortion. If... you know that
abortion kills more lives than anything else on earth;... you
have seen & heard about the evils of Planned Parenthood on
T.V. We need your prayers, fasting, and visible public
presence at the Presidential Women's Center (abortion
facility) off 45th St and Village Blvd. (Behind Pollo Tropical
and Wendy's). during the “40 Days for Life.” sponsored by FACE Life Inc, starting Sept 28 and ending on November 6;
Monday-Saturday: 7am-6pm and Sunday: 3pm-5pm. Sign up NEXT WEEKEND after all Masses!
