In February 2008, Father John Manno challenged St. James Church to reach beyond its walls and bring the presence of Christ to individuals and families impacted by poverty, drugs, crime and homelessness. In 2013, newly elected Pope Francis said, “We must get out of ourselves and go to the periphery.” For years now, Emmaus Ministry has reached thousands in need on the “periphery” in Syracuse. Through corporal works of mercy, food, drink, clothing, visiting the sick and burying the dead, Emmaus Ministry puts flesh to the Gospels, in a true “missionary evangelist” spirit. Emmaus Ministry is a dynamic and committed ministry that strives to meet the need of many in every section of the city (North, South, East and West). A man’s simple question back in 2009 brought clarity to the ministry… “But will you come back?” Inspired by the Gospel of Luke, Emmaus Ministry parallels the disciples on the Road to Emmaus, where upon recognizing the resurrected Christ in their midst the disciples asked Jesus to, “Stay with us.” Emmaus Ministry is continually being called to “go and do likewise”, for it is then, that we too see Christ in faces of those we serve. So, Emmaus Ministry’s response remains a resounding “YES, we will be back!” Emmaus Ministry is blessed to have many parishes, groups and individuals who collaborate with us to “Go and do likewise”. • St. James Church, Syracuse • Our Lady of Lourdes, Syracuse • Holy Cross School, Dewitt • St. Lucy’s Church, Syracuse • Immaculate Conception Church, Fayetteville • Holy Family Church, Syracuse • Dewitt Community Church • Onondaga Community College • Jamesville Dewitt Middle School • St. James Young Adult Group • Holy Cross Church, Dewitt • St. Anthony of Padua, Syracuse • St. John the Evangelist Church, Camden • St. Francis Xavier Church, Marcellus • Catholic Charities of Onondaga County • Onondaga Valley Presbyterian Church • Lemoyne College Campus Ministry • Syracuse University Phi Delta Epsilon • Syracuse University St. Thomas Moore Legal Society • COUNTLESS BENEFACTORS!
