A Message from Our New Lay Director
De Colores brothers and sisters of the Aldersgate
Emmaus Community from John Helton, Walk #88
table of Mark. During that walk I experienced God’s
Agape love as never before and began to take a
new spiritual direction, that of moving toward being
an “authentic” disciple of Jesus. Sandra and I have
been married 43 years and are blessed with two
sons and one very special grandson. We worship
and serve the Lord together with the Body of Christ
at Satellite Beach United Methodist Church.
My 4th Days have been filled with jubilation saying yes to Jesus more than I ever
imagined. Saying yes includes a stronger role in the local church and community as a
Christian leader letting actions speak, rather than words. The Emmaus movement is
important to Sandra and me as we sponsor pilgrims, serve on teams, and continue to
grow through leadership positions. Serving on the Aldersgate Board is very special and
to be asked to serve as the Lay Director for 2010 is truly an honor and privilege. Thank
you all for your confidence and support.
The Aldersgate Board of Directors serves the community as a governing body to ensure
dissemination of the guidelines promulgated by the Upper Room. In order to do so we
(The Board) sign (on your behalf) a covenant agreement to follow these guidelines. As
you participate in activities please be assured that to the best of our knowledge the
Upper Room Emmaus Handbook is being followed. It is no secret that the Walk to
Emmaus is Gods event and as your board prepares leadership to conduct the
weekends they do so in the Spirit of God the father, Jesus the son, and The Holy Spirit.
The New Year brings many exciting events with men’s and women’s walks including
Spanish-language walks. 2010 is the 30th anniversary of Florida Aldersgate Emmaus
and that will come with a celebration. The board is praying for these events and for the
spiritual growth of the community and asks that as a community we respond to God’s
desire and use our gifts and talents to share His love.
I look forward to serving the Lord together with you throughout the year.
Peace & Blessings
John

A Message for the Heart
“The eyes of the Lord your God are always on [the land], from the
beginning of the year to the very end of the year”. —Deuteronomy 11:12
Longtime California pastor Ray Stedman once told his congregation: ―On New Year’s Eve we
realize more than at any other time in our lives that we can never go back in time. . . . We can
look back and remember, but we cannot retrace a single moment of the year that is past.‖
Stedman then referred to the Israelites as they stood on the edge of a new opportunity. After four
decades of desert wanderings by their people, this new generation may have wondered if they
had the faith and fortitude to possess the Promised Land.
Their leader, Moses, reminded them that they had seen ―every great act of the Lord which He
did‖ (Deut. 11:7) and that their destination was ―a land for which the Lord your God cares; the
eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the
year‖ (v.12).
On New Year’s Eve, we may fear the future because of events in the past. But we need not
remain chained to our old memories because we can move ahead focused on God. Just as the
Lord watched over the land and His people, so His eyes will be upon us.
God’s faithful care will extend to every day of the new year. We can count on that promise. —
David C. McCasland
God holds the future in His hands
With grace sufficient day by day;
Through good or ill He gently leads,
If we but let Him have His way. —Rohrs
The “what” of our future is determined by the “Who” of eternity.

From the International Director
I'm happy to announce a new area of emphasis -- Leadership Development. The purpose for this new
emphasis is to help us listen to the local community Boards of Directors and to nurture the
partnership we have together in this global ministry. Our goal is to develop and empower local
leaders -- members of the Board of Directors -- to develop relationships among leaders and among
communities.
The Leadership Development program will draw the International Office, the Regional Leaders and
Assistant Regional Leaders into a relationship with each of the Boards of Directors for Emmaus and
Chrysalis. We want to help to equip, empower and educate you to lead their communities. We are
partners, not police. Each of the Regional Leaders is enthusiastically embracing this new method. We
want to know: How we can help you? What tools do you need to serve your Emmaus or Chrysalis
community? We will be praying for you and hope you will pray for us.
Beginning in 2010, we will be conducting Leadership Development events in each of the five regions.
We will be asking that all new Board of Director members attend one meeting. We invite other Board
members interested community members to also attend. Each region will hold several (4-7) of these
one-day trainings, located strategically around each region. You are asked to attend the meeting that
is most convenient for you to attend. (Each year after, we’ll continue to offer 4-7 meetings in each
region, inviting newly elected members of the Boards.) As a local Board member, you are only
expected to attend one meeting during your three years of service on the Board of Directors. Usually,
that will be your first year of service on your local board.
These Leadership Development meetings will usually be held on a Saturday and will contain six
hours of content. You will be able to meet and ask questions of your Regional Leaders, meet board
members from other Emmaus and Chrysalis communities, and pray together with other brothers and
sisters in Christ. Emmaus and Chrysalis board members will meet together.
In order to find the location of the Leadership Development Meetings in your region, simply click on
the Leadership Development link .
We are really looking forward to learning, growing, and praying together -- to further this global
movement.
Blessings to you,
Greg Engroff and the staff of the International Emmaus and Chryslis offices

Leadership Development Event in Leesburg
Event: Upper Room Emmaus Southeast Regional Training
Hosted By: The Aldersgate Emmaus Community
Purpose: Training in all aspects of the Upper Room model for Emmaus. There will be
separate sessions for clergy and lay leaders. The training is primarily for the Board
members of newly formed Emmaus communities (like Gainsville Living Water). But it is
also open to Boards and other interested Emmaus alumni from all communities as a
good opportunity for refresher training, networking, problem solving, etc. The Aldersgate
Board is encouraged to participate.
Background: In the past the UR used to send staff to each newly forming community
to provide this training. With lots of new communities forming all around the US they
have decided to offer several regional training events to save on travel expenses and
staff travel demands. This is the inaugural such regional training event (see page 4
above).
Date: Saturday, March 6, 9AM to 3PM. This coincides with our Men's Walk #131 participants at the training event will be invited to participate in our candlelight for Walk
131 on Saturday evening. Lunch will be provided in the Leesburg Youth Camp cafeteria
for a nominal fee.
We could use some volunteers from the Aldersgate community to provide a continental
breakfast, coffee, juice and mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack agape (we all know
what that is) and to be greeters and hosts for the visitors from other communities who
will be participating.

Scenes from the Christmas House – Adersgate Fundraiser
December 5, 2009 – Clermont, FL
The Christmas House was fun for everyone. Kids got to see Santa as well as listen to a
story from Mother Goose; create their own Christmas cards; have their face painted and
enjoy juice and cookies. We’re already making plans for the 2010 Christmas House.

Join the Angel Squad!
You can now volunteer serve for any part of a men’s or women’s Walk
to Emmaus team as a temporary member of the outside Angel squad. No
need to participate in any team meetings and you are not required to
spend the night in the bunkhouse. Just call the Outside Coordinator at
least 2 weeks prior to the start of the walk and let him or her know when
you will arrive and how long you will plan to stay. If you plan to have
meals in the cafeteria the cost is $25 for a full day (breakfast, lunch and
dinner). To spend the night the additional cost is $25 (includes breakfast
the next morning).
INFORMATION FOR SPONSORS:
Sponsors, please bring your Pilgrim agape letters on Thursday
night of the Walk at the send-off and give them to a member of the
team. Limit the number of letters to be given to your Pilgrim on
Sunday afternoon to no more than 12. These should be letters from
those closest to the Pilgrim starting with immediate family members.
Additional agape letters from friends and other church members may
be provided following the weekend.
Also, there will be a 4th Day meeting scheduled within a few
weeks after each Walk. This is a special gathering opportunity to do
follow-up. The 4th Day meeting is for all team members, Pilgrims and
their Sponsors. The 4th Day meeting arrangements are set by the lay
leadership for each walk.

Praying that you will have a blessed, happy & healthy 2010.
