PROGRAMME ROSHNI
SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION
Employees’ quality time with NGOs
Dalmia Bharat partners NABARD for
Watershed Development Project
EMPLOYEES based out of Hansalaya, Scindia House
and Noida ofces visited NGOs located in and around
New Delhi as part of Dalmia Bharat’s social initiative –
Roshni. The programme encourages every employee to
devote two working days in a year helping various not-forprot organisations. Depending upon the volunteer’s
abilities, he or she may provide support for content
development, writing reports, accounting, teaching, and
more, based on the needs of the NGOs.
Foundation. While Mr Singh and Ms Thakur helped with
the Foundation’s Diwali Mela, Ms Mishra spent time with
children studying at the Foundation.
GIVING a leg-up to the Government’s Participatory
Integrated Watershed Development project, DCBL signed
an MoU with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural
Development (NABARD) in September 2014.
Mr P.K. Tripathi, Group Head – Manufacturing, DCBL,
signed the MoU in the presence of Mr Anil Bajaj,
Executive Director & Plant Head, Kadapa and Mr Vishal
Bhardwaj, Group Head – CSR, Dalmia Bharat Group.
The key objective of the project is to re-charge
groundwater, prevent soil erosion, improve soil moisture
for higher agro productivity, promote bio-mass and
improve livelihoods overall. The project is spread over ve
years and divided into two phases. The rst is Capacity
Building Phase (CBP) that would last for a year and the
second is Full Implementation Phase (FIP) for the
remaining four years. The project will reach out to and
benet over 6,000 villagers. The total cost of the project is
estimated to be ` 12,000 per hectare which will be borne
equally by NABARD and DCBL.
Mr Pankaj Rastogi was the rst volunteer who actively
engaged himself with National Association for the Blind,
preparing number sheets utilised in chess tournaments for
visually impaired children. Mr Abhisek Akhouri volunteered
with The Earth Saviours Foundation, where he spent
quality time with senior citizens residing in a shelter home.
Mr Sukhvinder Singh, Ms Tamana Thakur and
Ms Priyanka Mishra volunteered with The SETU
LIVE YOUR DAY DREAM
A workshop by
Ms Priyanka Mishra
MS PRIYANKA MISHRA, a member of the NOIDA
Commercial Team, volunteered with Serve and Empower
the Underprivileged Foundation (SETU) on November
5, 2014. Commendably, she conducted a workshop where
twenty-ve children, studying in classes 7 and 8, were
empowered to pursue their dreams.
Although these children have attended ‘life-skills’
workshops earlier, Ms Mishra’s workshop on ‘Live your
Daydream’ gave the students an opportunity to learn more
about setting personal goals, and realising those goals by
staying focused on them.
At the workshop, children learnt about the importance of
daydreaming, developing a dream diary and it's practical
signicance in day-to-day life, setting goals for life, attitude
of gratitude, listening skills, continuous learning plan and
how to motivate one-self. These sessions were no less
than a blessing for the students as they learned to prepare
a dream diary for the rst time. Overall, the children
appreciated the workshop and have requested for more
such interactions with guest volunteers.

Ms Mishra also enjoyed the workshop. It presented an
opportunity for her to explore her hidden talents. She
received overwhelming responses from the children as
they wanted the 3-hour long session to extend further.
We wish Ms Mishra all the very best and encourage her to
conduct more of such motivating sessions in future.
DBGF creates drinking
water resource in Lanka
PRIOR to DBGF’s initiative, villagers of Pipal Pukhuri,
Lanka, Assam, faced acute shortage of drinking water
during the summer months. Women had to fetch water
from distant places to meet daily requirements. On the
request of the villagers, DBGF conducted a technical
survey of the area and dug two ring wells. The wells have
now benetted more than 50 families of the village.
TRAINING FOR A LIVELIHOOD
Training on book-keeping for SHG members
A TRAINING programme was conducted for the Self Help
Group (SHG) members at Venkatachalapuram village in
Dalmiapuram. Over 25 members participated in the
training. Ms S. Jesentha, SHG coordinator from
Perambalur Social Service Society (PSSS) trained the
group in documentation and record-keeping. Another
similar training programme was organised for SHGs
formed in Umrangshu. A total of 45 members participated
in the programme.

SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES
Inspiring eco-friendly cotton cultivation
in Dalmiapuram
Solar lanterns promotion
and distribution
COTTON is the principal crop around Dalmiapuram mines
and every year farmers burn the stalk to save labour costs
of cutting and disposing it. Burning of such quantities of
stalk result in high emissions of greenhouse gases but
farmers perceive that it increases soil productivity
unaware of the fact that it damages the soil, killing useful
life in it.
OVER 50 solar lanterns were distributed in villages
Pudhurpalayam, Venkatachalapuram, Keelarasur,
Palinganatham, Kowandakurichi and Kallakudi in
Dalmiapuram. An awareness-cum-distribution programme
was also conducted in the villages of Kamanakatti, Girisagar
and Gulagonjikoppa in Gokak Taluk, Yadwad, Belgaum
wherein over 75 solar lanterns were distributed among
members of Self Help Group (SHG) promoted by DBGF.
Biogas plants in
Dalmiapuram and
Jawaharpur
THREE biogas plants (one each in Keelarasur, Aamarasur
and Hasthinapuram villages) were constructed in
Dalmiapuram and another three were constructed in
Jawaharpur. Beneciaries are residents of village Tedwa
in Sitapur district.
Testimony from beneciary
Makkhan Singh
I’m a farmer with 12 family members to support.
There is a consumption of two LPG cylinders
every month along with the usage of a traditional
chullha. During one of the village awareness
meetings organised by DBGF, I learned about the
benets of low-cost biogas plants. I realised that
since I have six buffaloes, I can easily use dung
for fueling the plant. I immediately approached
DBGF and opted for construction of a 4-cubic-feet
biogas plant in my backyard. The mixing tank was
built near the animal shed so that the dung slurry
can easily be fed into the biogas tank. After a few
months of using the plant, I realised its
effectiveness. I can even use the slurry as manure
in the elds. My wife now uses the biogas most of
the time for cooking food, and we have not booked
a gas cylinder in the last few months. I am sure
that I will be able to recover my investment in
another few months.
Makkhan Singh narrated benets of a
biogas plant to his close friends, Gurupal
Singh, who owns nine buffaloes, three
cows and has a family of 16 members; and
to Ranjit Singh who owns 12 buffaloes and
has a family of 11 members. Both his
friends have now opted for biogas plants.

fertiliser application, and more, via effective mediums such
as street plays. Presently we have over 30 ‘learner
groups’ of 30 to 40 farmers each in the project villages.
In order to address these challenges, we piloted a
sustainable cotton cultivation project in Dalmiapuram, in
partnership with CottonConnect. In the rst phase of the
project, we have enrolled 1,200 farmers with whom the
project team will work on improving soil, water, crop
productivity and minimise the use of fertilisers.
Additionally, a campaign has been launched to spread
awareness on pre-sowing practices, methodology of
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Awareness on Watershed Project enhanced
through murals
INFORMATION, Education & Communication
(IEC) campaign was launched in villages
benetting from our Watershed Project, in
Venkatachalapuram, Dalmiapuram. The
campaign included murals painted as per the
standards of NABARD, our project partner,
illustrating details of the Watershed Project
such as its objectives, costs, size and volume,
and the importance of community
participation.
A rally was also organised on September 16,
2014 in village Mudhuvathur, also in
Venkatachalapuram, where over 50 students
from Panchayath Union Middle School
participated. The rally went through all the
streets in the village to enhance awareness of
the Watershed Project.
