“We will take an active role in defining
the future of the convent and the site, in the
best interest of the City and the community
of Pointe Claire,” Mayor Morris Trudeau
said in statement. “We will do whatever is
needed to ensure that this extraordinary historical site is preserved for future
generations.”
The previous Bill McMurchie administration declared the area a heritage site in
March 2013, a year after the Quebec government made a similar designation.
The Congregation of Notre Dame moved
into the convent in 1787 from Lachine, following an agreement with the St. Joachim
Parish, that the nuns could use the facility
free of charge for as long as they taught
young school girls. In 1867, the present
Notre-Dame-du-Vieux-Moulin convent was
built to replace an aging and deteriorating
building.

“Because this is still a buyer’s market and
given the high number of houses available on
the market, we are witnessing a downward
pressure on property prices,” said St-Pierre.
The drop in prices could diminish the
inventory and revitalize the market.
Houses in the West Island have experienced such a drop. In Dorval and
Pierrefonds, the average price of the standard
two-storey home fell by one and two percent,
respectively.
However the average price for detached
bungalows rose to nearly three percent in both
Dorval and Pierrefonds. The average price in
the GMA was 2.6 per cent.
“The market we have right now is the kind
of market we should expect going forward. It’s
a lot more balanced,” said St. Pierre.
The housing market recovered from a poor
start to 2014 with strong sales in the months of
June and July, according to Royal LePage,
which released its quarterly ‘House Price
Survey and Market Survey Forecast’ last week.
In the second quarter report, the real estate
agency projected the average house price in
the Greater Montreal Area (GMA) will increase 1.7 per cent by year’s end.
“It’s a better market from what we’ve seen in
the first part of the year, which was slower than
we anticipated,” said Dominic St-Pierre, director of Royal LePage for the Quebec region.
The stronger market forecast comes after a
late spring and political uncertainty associated
with the last provincial election.
The West Island has clearly benefitted from
the Liberal’s win during the April 7 election, as
it experienced an increase in sales in the
second quarter.
In Kirkland, 105 single family homes (detached bungalows and two-storey homes) were
sold, an 11.7 per cent increase year over year.
Dollard des Ormeaux (DDO) experienced
a smaller increase at 2.73 per cent with 188
homes sold compared to 183 in 2013.
Sales in Pointe Claire didn’t change in the
second quarter, year over year, as Royal LePage
reported 151 single family homes sold.
The condominium market remained flat as
fewer sales were reported. Dollard des
Ormeaux experienced a 4.3 per cent decline
in sales, year over year, with 67 units sold.
Only nine condos in Kirkland have thus far
been sold in the second quarter, five fewer
than in 2013.
The housing market, said St. Pierre, is the
victim of high inventory of single family homes
and condos. In the GMA alone, Royal LePage
estimated roughly 15,000 listings, as opposed
to the average of 10,000 experienced in the last
decade.
The high inventory, added St. Pierre, could
have a short-term impact on the housing market.

The president of Pointe Claire’s Historical
Preservation Society (SSPPC) wants the city of
Pointe Claire to purchase one of the oldest protected areas of the West Island known as ‘La
Pointe.’
After the Chronicle first reported news of the
Congregation of Notre-Dame’s Decemberbound departure from the Notre-Dame-duVieux-Moulin Convent, last week, due to aging
nuns and the administration’s inability to maintain costs, Claude Arsenault said “it’s a beautiful
opportunity for the city to buy the land.”
Though the convent is a part of the ‘La
Pointe’ land, a heritage-designated site which
includes the windmill, presbytery, and the
church, and owned by the St. Joachim Parish
for over two centuries, city officials “must
ensure its preservation and accessibility to the
public,” said the SSPPC president.
According to Arsenault, Pointe Claire
should emulate the city of Chateauguay; the
latter purchased land – and roughly nine buildings – situated on Ile St. Bernard belonging
to the Grey Nuns of Montreal in 2011 to
ensure its preservation.
The land is now home to the picturesque
Marguerite-D’Youville Wildlife Sanctuary.
Such an acquisition would require a substantive financial investment.
Sources close to the situation told the
Chronicle no such plan is in play and that city
officials will wait to learn of St. Joachim
Parish’s intentions moving forward.

My life has changed, and for the better – I think I need to tell the world
I was obese for a long time. It started when I was young – and sort of
came and went through my high
school, college and university years,
where I played offensive line, so
being big was an asset, athletically speaking. That was something I hang
my hat on, because as long as I was
playing offensive line, I had a built-in
excuse to be dangerously overweight
under the guise of athletic potential.
It was then, as it remains today,
poppycock.
Since puberty, I have also been an
emotional eater. I ate when I was
bored, when I was happy and when I
was sad. I ate because I loved the feeling of fullness – because it sure beat
the crap out of emptiness. I often felt
that everything else was sort of filling
around mealtimes – and that continued into adulthood, where I justified my poor eating habits by saying
to myself that ‘I deserved (insert junk
food name here)’ because I had had
a bad day/gone through some trauma/had to deal with a tough boss/
fight with my significant other.
That went on until one day, it
couldn’t go on anymore. Sure, I had
gone on diets over the years, all of
which (2001, 2003, 2006), but the
weight would always quietly sneak
back on because I couldn’t maintain
the diet or started to get back into
sedentary habits. By 2009 – when our
second child was born – I weighed
close to 400 pounds and couldn’t
even look at myself in photos. Part of
that had to do with pregnancy sympathy weight I put on while eating whatever I liked during my wife’s pregnancy cravings. By 2012, I no longer
felt good about my physical wellbeing; stress was starting to take over
my life and my eating habits remained catastrophic, to put it mildly. I
was way too fat, and I was putting my
own life at risk as a result.
Type II diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure and cardiac issues
were certainly not far off
for me, even though I was
in my mid-thirties. It
was that serious. I

gym. I started to love salad and vegetables, and
was eager to make them the primary ingredient
in most of my meals. After a while, I noticed an
increase in my energy levels, an increase in my
good feelings and a decrease in stress. I also
noticed a profound change in my body – and
now, after nearly two years, I am confident that
I will stay at this weight for the long term. From
a high of 385 pounds in 2009 to a weight of 229
pounds today, it has been an amazing journey
every step of the way. I was so eager to share my
journey with the world that I went and got certified as a personal trainer affiliated with the
West Island YMCA in order to help others
enjoy getting in shape as much as I have.

I started doing high-intensity circuits with
some resistance training, and after a few weeks,
I realized I loved how it felt, and with my promise to myself to go every day, I had no reason
not to get in there and sweat daily. I sweated
and learned, and every day brought a new challenge. After a few weeks, I decided to start
paying attention to my nutrition levels, hoping
to accentuate the gains I was making in the

old street signs located in the southern sector yesterday.

Orders will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Each sign costs $10 and all the
money will be given to Dorval’s Community
Aid or to non-profit organizations.
Once the specific urban souvenir is removed from the municipal environment, the person who reserved it will be contacted and will
be able to take it home.
The sale of street signs of the northern sector (north of Highway 20), which began in
early June, is still ongoing, as several dozen
street signs are still available.
It is prohibited for anyone to take down the
current street signs in Dorval.
Violators are subject to a fine.

Three men were arrested in Laval last
Thursday morning shortly after allegedly robbing a local Pierrefonds bank. The thieves
were fleeing in a getaway car when thwarted by
Laval Police and Surete du Quebec.
According to Const. Daniel Maheu of
Montreal Police Station 3, two armed men
entered the bank, located on Gouin Boulevard
W. between Normand and Fabien streets, a
little after 10:40 a.m., calling for the bank’s
director. The bank teller obliged.
Though they were told the cash register was
empty, one of the tellers finally reneged and
gave $500 to one thief; another teller also gave
$500, designed particularly for thieves, to the
second.
“It’s not enough money,” said one of the
suspects, according to Const. Maheu.
Unsuccessful in their bid for more money,
the two masked and hooded 20-year-old black
males ran out of the bank and into a white
Dodge Charger.
No one at the bank was hurt.
One person, however, just outside the
bank, did take a photo of the getaway car and
subsequently notified Station 3 Police.

power line, following last week’s windstorm
that left over 20,000 hydro customers without
power in the Montreal region.

line; residents on the avenue thereafter lost
power.
The provincial conglomerate dispatched its
repair crews the following morning to repair
the extensive damage caused by 80 km/h winds
that blew through the entire Island of
Montreal.
The company, said Hydro Quebec spokesperson Ouali Fodil, has a protocol to follow in
the event of a reported live wire.
First, residents must call police to notify a
potential safety hazard. Once the local
authorities are on site and the safety hazard is
confirmed, police oblige Hydro officials to
immediately cut power in the targeted area.
Fodil couldn’t confirm whether the wire
was, in fact, live.
Even worse, said Kettenbeil, the power
outage on Prince Edward Avenue could have
been avoidable. The resident claimed the tree
that felled the power line was marked, by
Hydro, for removal last year.
“They came, marked the tree, and never
came back,” she said.
Fodil couldn’t comment further.

REQUESTS FOR MINOR EXEMPTION
Avis est par la présente donné qu’à la séance ordinaire du conseil
municipal devant se tenir le 5 août 2014 à 19 h 30 à l’hôtel de ville de
Pointe-Claire, situé au 451, boulevard Saint-Jean, les demandes de
dérogation mineure au Règlement de zonage PC-2775 suivantes
seront étudiées :
Notice is hereby given that at the regular council meeting to
be held on August 5, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. at Pointe-Claire City
Hall, locatedat 451 Saint-Jean Boulevard, the following
requests for a minor exemption to Zoning By-law PC-2775
will be considered:
1. Permettre au 32, chemin du Bord-du-Lac—Lakeshore : 1.
a) deux accès véhiculaires d’une largeur totale de 10,1 m
(33’), alors que la largeur maximale permise est de 6,1 m (20’) ;
b) un espace vert en marge avant inférieur au minimum requis,
qui est de 50 % d’espace vert en marge avant.
To allow at 32 Bord-du-Lac—Lakeshore Road:
a) two access points with a total width of 10.1 m (33’),
rather than the maximum permitted of 6.1 m (20’);
b) a green space in the front setback that is inferior to the
minimum required of 50 % green space in the front setback.
2. Permettre au 180, avenue Labrosse, l’installation d’un 2.
transformateur dans la marge latérale plutôt que dans la marge
arrière, tel que requis.
To allow at 180 Labrosse Avenue the installation of a
transformer in the side setback rather than in the rear
setback, as required.
3. Permettre au 155, avenue Prince-Edward :
a) un agrandissement résidentiel situé à une distance de
2,5 m (8,25’) de la ligne de propriété latérale nord, alors
que la distance minimale requise est de 3 m (9,8’) ;
b) un perron arrière avec escaliers mesurant 5,6 m2 (60 pieds
carrés) situé à 2,5 m (8,25’) de la ligne de propriété
latérale nord, alors que la distance minimale requise est de
3 m (9,8’) ;
c) la construction d’un perron sur poteaux d’environ 2,5 m (8,2’),
alors que la hauteur maximale permise est de 1,5 m (4,9’).
To allow at 155 Prince-Edward Avenue:
a) a residential extension to be located at a distance of
2.5 m (8.25’) from the north lateral property line, rather
than at the minimum required distance of 3 m (9.8’);
b) a rear landing with stairs measuring 5.6 m2
(60 square feet) to be located at a distance of 2.5 m
(8.25’) from the north lateral property line, rather
than the minimum required distance of 3 m (9.8’);
c) the construction of a landing on posts at a height of about 2.5 m
(8.2’) rather than the maximum height permitted of 1.5 m (4.9’).

In honour of its 10 year anniversary of hosting the
Shona D’Afrique outdoor exhibition, Beaconsfield Mayor
Georges Bourelle accepted a fine piece of Zimbabwean art
last Friday morning at Centennial Park.
ZimArt, the event's organizer donated a tall, black
sculpture, entitled ‘Loving Each Other’ by Tinej Mashaya,
to the city for the friendly partnership over the last decade.
According to Fran Fearnley, the founder of the
Ontario-based art gallery, the Beaconsfield government
“has been nothing but supportive.”
Highlighting brilliant pieces of Zimbabwean sculptures, this summer’s Shona D’Afrique exhibition will be the
last hosted by the city.
The outdoor exhibition officially began on Saturday and will
conclude on July 20. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Stay tuned for next week’s edition of the Chronicle for
a feature story on Shona D’Afrique’s artist-in-residence,
Vengai Chiwawa.
