After spending over two centuries living in the Notre-Dame-du-Vieux-Moulin Convent in a Pointe Claire Village area known as
“la Pointe Claire,” the 19 remaining sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame are moving, the Chronicle has learned.
Sources say the building has become too expensive to maintain and the remaining nuns calling
the convent home will be moved by year's end. Anthony Abbondanza has more on page 3.

Pointe Claire nuns on the move
Move to other convents in Montreal area expected by December: source
The sisters of the congregation of Notre Dame
will move to undetermined convents in the
Montreal area by December.
After spending over two centuries living in
the Notre-Dame-du-Vieux-Moulin Convent
in a Pointe Claire Village area known as “la
Pointe Claire,” the 19 remaining sisters of the
Congregation of Notre Dame are moving, the
Chronicle has learned.
Though the convent’s Sister Ange-Aimee
Roy confirmed the move, she said “there’s no
reason to give as to why we’re moving.”
According to multiple sources, the nuns are
being relocated to convents in Montreal – that
have yet to be determined – by December
because the historical site is “very expensive to
maintain.”
The Congregation of Notre Dame moved
into the convent in 1787, following an agreement with the owner, St. Joachim Parish,
that the nuns could use the facility free of
charge for as long as they taught young school girls. In 1867, the present Notre-Damedu-Vieux-Moulin convent was built to
replace an aging and deteriorating building.
The nuns now use the convent as a retirement home.

the parish’s intentions, to date, are unclear and
the city is taking a wait-and-see approach.

The ‘Pointe’ area is known to be highly
coveted by developers and a lucrative offer
could entice the parish to sell the convent.
The St. Joachim Parish owns most of the
area that’s home to the emblematic windmill,
convent, presbytery, and the church – all of
which are presently safe from developers since
March 2013 when the former Pointe Claire
city council declared the area a heritage site, a
year after the province made a similar
designation.
At the time of the heritage designation,
then-mayor Bill McMurchie told the

the Pointe Claire Historical Preservation
Society is keeping a close eye on the latest
developments.
“It would be surprising but you never know
with heritage sites,” said the society’s president
Claude Arsenault, adding the city needs to
“ensure its preservation and access to the
public.”
In April, urban planning consulting firm
Convercite released a detailed diagnosis of the
Pointe Claire Village, in part signalling what it
described as weaknesses, including “the involvement of the city and its departments in heritage interpretation, and concerted action with
citizens and organizations with an interest in
heritage issues.”
The 22-page report indicated the need to
highlight the historical importance of the area
as it would add value to the Village. Indications
are the cost of maintaining the historically-protected building is just too high.

The Train de l’ouest has a brighter outlook
after spokesperson clifford Lincoln and Maria
Tutino, mayor of Baie D’Urfe left a Monday
morning meeting with the transport minister.
(TC Media photo – Rob Amyot).
The three scenarios are mutually exclusive:
bus-dominated transportation network; traindominated transportation network; or a light
rail system, which could potentially include
the addition of a rail line devoted to passengeronly transit, akin to the Train de l’Ouest
proposal
According to Lincoln, “it’s too long” of a
delay for a project that will remove roughly
4,000 cars off the Island’s busiest roads and
highways, daily.
It’s not the first time a Liberal government
has made promises regarding the Train de
l’Ouest project.
Under the Charest government, the
Liberals promised nearly $1 billion for the
passenger-only rail line and a $22-million
study. While the study was completed, and the
Train de l’Ouest deemed necessary, the project
failed to materialize when the Parti Quebecois
grabbed power in September 2012.

downtown, Montreal where they met with
transport minister and West Island native
Robert Poeti for about an hour in an effort to
make a decades-long dream into reality.
“It was a very open and honest exchange,”
said Lincoln. “This is positive news.”
When asked when to expect the added service, the former West Island MP said the minister gave a projected timeline of 18 to 24 months – contingent on the purchase of new
equipment.
According to Tutino, the timeframe can be
reduced significantly if the Agence
Metropolitain de Transport (AMT), the agency which operates the regional train network,
uses older equipment readily available.
But the big news, said Tutino, was the
understanding the minister was on the same
page as the West Island delegation; that is, the
realization of the Train de l’Ouest project,
which calls for a devoted, express rail line from
Vaudreuil to Downtown, Montreal.
“He made a commitment that there will be
a rapid link for citizens on his mandate that
will be on track to completion,” said the Baie
D’Urfe mayor. “For us, it’s a pretty strong
statement.”
Tutino led a delegation of mayors that
included Morris Trudeau of Pointe Claire,
George Bourelle of Beaconsfield, among
others.
The group, however, may have to wait a
little longer for the government’s commitment
to become a reality as Poeti awaits the AMT’s
presentation of its West Island Mobility Plan,
which offers three different modes of transportation as solutions to the current traffic dilemma, and offered to get back to the coalition
with an answer by next year.

The mouth that roared
Athens Pizza’s closure leaves small hole in my heart
It was a small, anachronistic greasy-spoon pizza joint tucked into the
back end of a strip mall tucked away
on a side street in residential Pointe
Claire. The leather banquettes and
booths were peeling and splitting.
The jukeboxes, once the best way for
diners to entertain themselves while
waiting for their meals, no longer
worked, when my son and I visited
last winter, but the food was every bit
as delicious as I remember it being
– and my son agreed, clearly,
because after polishing off his grilled-cheese sandwich, he ate half of
my pizza as well. You could see that
the end was in sight, but at the time,
I didn’t want to heed
the alarm bells
going off in my
head that told
me the place
probably
w o u ld n ’ t b e
open much longer. Make no mistake, though —
for those of
us who
grew
up in
the
Lakeside Heights section of Pointe Claire,
Athens Pizzeria, on Walton Avenue between
Hastings and Braebrook avenues, was much,
much more than just a restaurant with dated
décor, shabby seating and broken jukeboxes.
It was, in fact, the taste of home.
It was a community centre of sorts; a place
where kids and teens could generally go with
or without their parents, and there was
nothing to worry about. The menu didn’t
change much over the years – the staples of
pizza, fries, onion rings, grilled-cheese and
club sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs –
remained the same, and so did the restaurant,
which stubbornly remained set in its ways for
the past four-plus decades. The place was
owned and run by two family members —
George cooked the food and Peter delivered
the food and waited tables inside the restaurant if need be.
Some of my most cherished memories
come from my youth, when after a morning
spent at the Pointe Claire Parks Program, my
sisters and our friends would gather at Athens
for pizza before the weekly flag challenges
that pit park against park in friendly competition – and those lunches were often the
highlight of our week, and the Athens ‘experience,’ as it were, was a huge part of that.
Debating which song to play on the jukebox
– The Scorpions’ 1991 hit ‘Wind of Change’
was a popular choice – and the
uncomfortable banquettes. But the pizza, to
me, was delicious, and when I heard it was
closing, it was like a death in the family. And
I’m not alone.
When my wife and I moved back to the
West Island in 2005 from downtown, the first
purchase we made – other than the house, of
course – was pizza from Athens to feed the
people helping us move. Later, I would take
my daughter and my son on separate occasions to get the feeling of what it was like.
Looking at the place through my children’s eyes, of course, helped lend perspective.
My son twirled on the stools lining the lunch
counter (which I never saw anybody eat at,
ever), while my daughter asked me about
each of the songs on the jukebox, many of
which were still around from when I was a
kid.
Yep, ‘Wind of Change’ was still there.
There’s a sign up on the now- closed restaurant door thanking customers for their
patronage through the years and inviting interested entrepreneurs to have a look-see about
re-opening the place.
I’m of two minds about this. Part of me
wants to see the place open again, with updated décor, a renovated interior and some
menu tweaks, but part of me wants it to be
closed and stay closed, just so that period of
time – that golden time in my life – lives forever in my mind, vividly.

of $2,500, which would help him cover the
initial costs.
Moussa then contacted the current owner,
Mr. Kirouac, to agree on a place and date of
meeting to inspect the vehicle and finalize the
transfer of property. The day of the meeting,
satisfied with his inspection and excited at
the thought of showing his new find to his
friends, the boy agreed to the sale of the car
and presented Mr. Kirouac with a check for
$6,500. They then shook hands and parted
ways.
A few weeks later, Moussa received a call
from the bank. The bank representative
explained that Mr. Kirouac had given his Ford
Mustang as guarantee for the repayment of a
personal loan. As he is now in default, she
added that unless Moussa were to repay the
loan, which amounts to $10,000, she would
be obliged to take measures to seize the car.
Did you know that there are important steps
to follow when buying a used car from an
individual? Moussa should have checked that
there were no debts or other rights on the
used car before buying it in the Register of
Personal and Movable Real Rights (RDPRM).
Indeed, in the presence of debt or other rights
on the car, the bank or any other creditor has
the right to seize it even if you are now the
owner and don’t owe anything on it. As for
Moussa, he would have to sue Mr. Kirouac for
the money that he paid him for the car.
However, he is probably out of luck, since the
latter can’t even pay off his loan to the bank…
If you face such a situation and need advice,
you should consult a lawyer.

Merged with the neighbouring village of Ste.

became a municipality in 1958. Combined with
Roxboro, it became a borough of the city of
Montreal in 2002. This community boasts a multitude of sports and leisure activities groups,
including the Pierrefonds Figure Skating Club,
Pierrefonds Adult Hockey League and the
Pierrefonds Soccer Association and six neighbourhood pools. Pierrefonds is surrounded by
Pierrefonds Boulevard and Gouin Boulevard,
providing residents access to the main parts
of the island. Only five per cent of Roxboro is
commercial, making it a residential haven for
families. Residents of Roxboro can enjoy a walk

DREAM one Smile at a Time
For the last forty years, the Town of Kirkland
has grown the fastest of all cities in the Greater
Montreal area. Since 2001, its population has
reached its limit, with growth being under a half
per cent for the last five-year period. Celebrating
its 50th anniversary this year, the town now
counts over 20,000 souls. Reading enthusiasts
will realize the Town Library values families. You
can find an educative section to support parents, children books, or can attend Story Time.
Athletes are also privileged in Kirkland, where
15 sports associations are available to children,
adults and elders alike.
