Volume 56, Issue 20 November 23, 2015 Bruce Feiler to Speak at First Congregational Conversations Keynote B Amram to Focus on Clinton Years with Scholar Gil Troy W ith the potential White House return of Hillary and Bill Clinton after next fall’s Presidential election, the Amram Scholar Series will examine The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s with a lecture by political historian Gil Troy on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 pm at Temple. A professor of history at McGill University and a visiting scholar at the Brookings Institution, Dr. Troy is the author of 11 books and of weekly columns in The Daily Beast and The Jerusalem Post. In assessing the 1990s, Dr. Troy says the Clinton Presidency personified the decade’s “noble aspirations, notable achievements, missed opportunities, and embarrassing excesses.” And in exploring Bill Clinton’s quest for peace in the Middle East, he depicts the President’s love for Israel and fury at Yasir Arafat for undermining the Oslo Peace Process. Dr. Troy joins our Amram lineup at this timely political moment in cooperation with the Jewish Book Council. est-selling author of Walking the Bible and Abraham and a widely recognized thinker, writer, and speaker on the role of religion in contemporary life, Bruce Feiler will join us at Temple on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 pm for a Congregational Conversations Keynote focusing on “What I Have Learned from the Abrahamic Journey.” An advocate of Abrahamic dialogue, Mr. Feiler held the first “Abraham Summit” at Washington Hebrew Congregation in the fall of 2002. In the aftermath of the attacks on September 11, he created a dialogue program called Abraham Salons, informal discussion groups that are a safe space for interfaith dialogue and are designed to build trust between members of different religious groups. More than 5,000 of Mr. Feiler's Abraham Salons have been held around the world. During his Keynote, Mr. Feiler will walk us through the history of Abraham, the shared ancestor of Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and the defining and divisive role he plays for all three faith communities. In his search for understanding, Continued on page 2. Community Thanksgiving Dinner This Thursday at Washington Hebrew Congregation I f you do not have plans for your Thanksgiving meal, we invite you to come to Temple for a Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 26 at 12:00 pm. Sponsored by the Interreligious Council in partnership with WHC, Annunciation Catholic Church, and St. Albans Episcopal Church, we offer companionship and community. The dinner is prepared and served by WHC’s Brotherhood, and we welcome both additional assistance on Thanksgiving as well as donations of food items to help prepare this meal that feeds 150 people. If you would like to attend the meal, volunteer your time, or provide some of the ingredients we need, please register online, whctemple.org/Brotherhood. For further information, please contact Layne Weiss, 202-362-7100 or lweiss@ whctemple.org. Congregational Conversations Keynote (continued from page 1) Mr. Feiler has spent extensive time in the Middle East, walking the desert to retrace the journey of Moses and visiting biblical sites in Israel, Iraq, and Iran. Through the lens of the past, he will give us insight into the current Middle East conflict and will lay the groundwork for confronting the ideas laid out in Rabbi Sacks’ book, Not in God’s Name. Online registration is available for this Keynote, whctemple.org/ CongregationalConversations. If you have questions or need registration assistance, please contact Layne Weiss, lweiss@whctemple.org or 202-8956307. Washington Hebrew Congregation Meg Jacobs Flax, President M. Ed., Director, E-T Early Childhood Center WHC News Yad B’Yad: Working Hand in Hand for Another Extraordinary Year at WHC As you saw in our recent Annual Report, last year was an extraordinary time of connection and innovation for our Congregation. Thanks to the support and participation of our diverse membership, we introduced dynamic new initiatives that enabled us to learn, give back, and build stronger relationships with one another and our faith. With an exciting new year underway, we are now launching the second year of Yad B’Yad, the WHC Annual Fund, co-chaired by Past Presidents Sherry Bindeman Kahn and Bob Shapiro. Membership revenues and fees support only 77 percent of our annual operating costs, so Yad B’Yad helps bridge that gap. Every tax-deductible gift helps sustain our Congregation’s outstanding programs and services and keep membership open to all, regardless of means. “Yad B’Yad,” Hebrew for “Hand in Hand,” is an apt name for an effort that calls on our entire community to extend a hand and be counted. There are many convenient ways to participate, including giving by check, credit card, stock, or billing your WHC account. To pledge your support, visit whctemple.org/giving, or contact Development Director Miriam Feffer, 202-895-6312 or mfeffer@whctemple.org. In this season of reflecting on our blessings, we give thanks to you for helping us grow from strength to strength. Fran Miller, M.S. E-T ECC at Temple: 202-895-6334 and RJWECC at JBSC: 301-279-7505 The Archive Thief Author at Sisterhood Literary Group American University professor Lisa Moses Leff will speak about her newly published book, The Archive Thief, at the next gathering of the Sisterhood Literary Group on Friday, December 4 at 10:00 am at JBSC. The Archive Thief is the true story of Jewish historian Zosa Szajkowski, who, in the aftermath of the Holocaust, gathered up tens of thousands of docu- ments from Nazi buildings in Berlin, and later, public archives and private synagogues in France, and moved them all, illicitly, to New York. Part detective story, part analysis of the construction of history, The Archive Thief offers a window into the debates over the rightful ownership of contested Jewish archives and the powerful ideological, economic, and psychological forces that have made Jewish scholars care so deeply about preserving the remnants of their past. All are welcome. It is not necessary to read the book prior to December 4, but feel free to bring it with you as Professor Leff will sign copies after her talk. Kindly RSVP to Susan Adland, sfadland@gmail.com. Join WHC Books at Temple on the third night of Hanukkah, Tuesday, December 8, at 7:00 pm to light the hanukkiyah, eat latkes, and discuss Raquela: A Woman of Israel by distinguished journalist Ruth Gruber. This National Jewish Book Award– winning biography is a fascinating look at the early years of Israel’s statehood experienced through the life of a pioneering nurse. Raquela Prywes was a ninth-generation Jerusalemite, delivered babies in a Holocaust refugee camp and on the Israeli frontier, crossed minefields to aid injured soldiers in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and organized hospitals to save the lives of those fighting the 1967 SixDay War. Along the way, her own life was a series of triumphs and tragedies mirroring those of the newly formed Jewish state. To borrow a copy of Raquela from WHC’s library, please contact Ellen Share, eshare@whctemple.org or 301354-3212. Purchasing this book on Amazon through the WHC Mitzvah Mall, whctemple.org/WHCMitzvahMall, benefits social justice programs for WHC’s youth. It Takes a Little Crazy to Make a Difference This is a story about the crazy journey of Dafna Michaelson Jenet, a single mom who hit the road on the days her kids were with their father. She traveled to all 50 states — in just 52 weeks — and met men, women, and children who took their struggles and turned them into community solutions. She shared their stories in her book, It Takes a Little Crazy to Make a Difference. On Tuesday, December 8 at 6:30 pm at Temple, Ms. Jenet offers you a front seat view into the mystery, hilarity, missteps, and love she discovered during this year on the road. She will share how this experience impacted her Jewish journey and commitment to the values of tikkun olam, and what she learned meeting ordinary people who are who are making an extraordinary difference across the country. This program is sponsored by the Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum. 5 WHC Thanks Its Generous Contributors JULIA & JACK BINDEMAN FUND Donor In Memory Of: Mr. & Mrs. Stuart Bindeman Adele Bindeman JANE BURKA SISTERHOOD LEADERSHIP FUND Donor In Memory Of: Kathy & Jody Dreyfuss Joseph R.
