Amram Lecture to Focus on the Complex

Special Services Help Us Celebrate
and Remember
This festival holiday also gives us two opportunities to worship
together as a community. Our Passover festival service, celebrating
the Exodus from Egypt, will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 10:30
am. We conclude the holiday on Friday, April 29 with a 10:30 am
festival and yizkor service that enables us to come together in prayer
and remember those who live on in our hearts.
Freedom Seder
Every year, we invite our interfaith neighbors to join us at Temple for
a special Passover seder. As indicated by its name, the Freedom Seder
celebrates freedom and reconfirms unity with our interfaith community through prayers, songs, and readings that reflect on the universal
struggle for human dignity. All members, guests, family, and friends
are welcome to join us on Wednesday, April 27 at 6:00 pm. RSVP
online at whctemple.org/Passover.
The Judaica Shop is Here to Help You Prepare
for the Holiday
Make a stop at JBSC’s Sisterhood Judaica Shop part of your Passover preparations. They have a beautiful and eclectic selection of seder plates, Haggadahs,
hostess gifts, children’s items, and more at a variety of price

for the installation of
the newest members
of Sisterhood’s vibrant

by Lisa Green, television legal analyst, attorney, and author of On Your Case.
One of Lisa’s many talents is her ability to help women
understand and be prepared for legal issues that can arise
at every stage of life so they can make the best decisions for
themselves and their families.
As you enrich your own life on the 23rd, we invite you
to help improve the life of another as we partner with
BRAWS (Bringing Resources to Aid Women’s Shelters), a
nonprofit organization that provides new bras, underwear,
and sanitary supplies to women in shelters. You can bring
new bras (in all sizes with tags attached) to the luncheon or
add a contribution to your registration.
The Spring Luncheon costs $65 per person,
and registrations received by May 10 will include a

Our 2016 Confirmation Class
Confirmation is the ceremony through which we recognize and celebrate the importance of continued Jewish education.
It is traditionally linked to the festival of Shavuot when the first fruits were brought to be offered at the Temple. During their
years of study, Washington Hebrew Congregation’s Confirmands have developed a stronger connection to the Jewish people,
a greater understanding of a wide range of Jewish values, and have come to more fully appreciate the diversity of Jewish beliefs
and practices. We applaud the achievements of its Confirmands and invite the entire congregation to join us on Sunday,
May 15 at 9:00 am at Temple for the confirmation of the following 48 young women and men:

Journey into Islam (continued from page 1)
Amram (continued from page 1)
In Journey into Europe, Ambassador Ahmed, a worldrenowned Muslim anthropologist, provides an in-depth
look at Muslim life across Europe and the attitudes and perceptions of Europeans regarding their Muslim neighbors.
Filmed as they traveled across the continent in winter and
summer 2014, Ambassador Ahmed and his team shined a
light on the Muslim experience in Europe.
Ambassador Ahmed is the former Pakistani High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Currently,
he is the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American
University and Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings
Institution.
National Character Shapes Our World, analyzes the efforts of
Israelis to forge an identity. “They are grand and grandiose,
visionary and delusional, generous and self-centered,” Dr.
Gratch suggests. “Deeply caring because of the history of
Jewish victimization, Israelis also demonstrate,” he says,
“a shocking indifference to the sufferings of others.” Dr.
Gratch has served on the faculty of Columbia University’s
Department of Clinical Psychology and has worked as a
consultant for Pepsi, Colgate-Palmolive, Nabisco, and the
NFL. He comes to WHC through the cooperation of the
Jewish Book Council.

Help the Carrie Simon House Moms
Celebrate Mother’s Day
You can give the young
mothers residing at Carrie
Simon House (CSH) a
special Mother’s Day treat
this year by purchasing an
item for them from the
CSH Amazon wish list.
Their wish list includes basic household goods like towels,
sheets, and pillows as well as gift cards. Being remembered
on Mother’s Day is special for any mom. For these young
women at CSH, it means the world. You can access their
Amazon wish list on our website, whctemple.org/CSH.
Thank you for your support!
Carrie Simon House is a nonprofit transitional housing
program in Washington, D.C. for homeless women ages 18–25
and their babies that was founded by WHC in 1988.

Your Mother’s and Father’s Day Cards
Can Support Women at Risk
Most of us already send Mother’s Day
and Father’s Day cards to the people
who influence, love, and support us.
This year, those cards can carry deeper
meaning. You can raise awareness of domestic abuse and honor women spending
Mother’s Day in domestic violence shelters,
when you send your cards through Jewish Women International’s (JWI) Flower Project. For each $25 donation, JWI
will send a beautiful, personalized Mother’s Day or Father’s
Day card to the person you choose to honor. Your contribution enables JWI to send Mother’s Day bouquets to
200 domestic violence shelters, brightening the holiday for
thousands of women. For more information and to place an
order, go to whctemple.org/Sisterhood. Please remember to
name WHC as your partner organization!
