Congregational
Conversations: Religious
Extremism and Violence
H
ow and
when did religious extremism
and violence become conjoined?
In this second year
of Congregational
Conversations,
we invite you to
explore with us
the phenomenon
of religious extremism and violence in
“Not in God’s Name: Our Jewish Identity in an Age of Religious Violence.”
Together, through monthly book
club-style Conversations and Keynote
talks by noted scholars and experts on
the history of religious violence and
extremism, we will explore, “How can
we use our faith as a positive force
for change?” A new book from Rabbi
Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief
Rabbi of the United Kingdom and
Ireland, Not in God’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence, will provide the
framework for this year’s Congregational Conversation. We will also use
texts that are at the heart of Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam to help us learn
how these stories can be twisted to
inspire religious violence.
We will begin this year’s Conversation on Thursday, November 12, 8:00
pm at American University. Rabbi
Sacks and Ambassador Akbar Ahmed,
American University’s Ibn Khaldun
Chair of Islamic Studies, will engage in
an interfaith dialogue about confronting religious violence. Michael Brenner,

Shabbat Service and Dinner Honors Service Members
and Celebrates Jewish Books
H
elp us pay tribute to the service
and sacrifice of our current and
former military members on Friday,
November 13 when we call them to
the bimah for a special blessing during our 6:00 pm Shabbat service. The
service will feature author Daniel M.
Cohen (Single Handed: The Inspiring
True Story of Tibor “Teddy” Rubin – Holocaust Survivor, Korean War Hero, and
Medal of Honor Recipient) who comes
to WHC through the Amram Scholar
Series.
In celebration of Jewish Book
Month, Mr. Cohen, whose book was
the subject of the October WHC
Books discussion, will continue his talk
during a dinner that follows the service.
To join us for dinner, please register
online, whctemple.org/WHCBooks.
Single Handed tells the vivid story
of Tibor “Teddy” Rubin, the only
Holocaust survivor to receive America’s
highest military distinction, the Medal
of Honor. His story spans 80 years,
two wars, and three continents and is
filled with selfless acts of bravery and
fortitude.

The Nazi Officer’s Wife — A Story of Survival with Susan
Dworkin at Kristallnacht Service
T
he daring story of Edith Hahn, a
young Jewish woman in Vienna
who married a Nazi and hid in plain
sight throughout the Holocaust, will
be featured at this year’s interfaith
Kristallnacht commemoration on
Tuesday, November 10 at 7:30 pm. As
part of WHC’s Amram Scholar Series,
Susan Dworkin — best selling author
of The Nazi Officer’s Wife: How One
Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust — will discuss the life of Edith
Hahn Beer at a service hosted by Annunciation Catholic Church at 3810
Massachusetts Avenue NW. The interfaith Kristallnacht service is an annual
remembrance of the November night
in 1938 when the Nazis first unleashed
a violent assault on German Jews.
Susan Dworkin has written a half
dozen plays and published 14 books.
This Amram program is presented in cooperation with the Jewish Book Council.

Our B’nei Mitzvah
November 14, 2015
A Community Connected by Challah
Morning Service
If you have attended Friday
evening Shabbat services between October and June, you
may have noticed the exceptionally delicious (and wellbraided!) challah being served
as you exit. Or, perhaps you
saw an adorable 3rd or 4th
grade student standing on the
bimah, beaming with pride as
that very challah is blessed by our clergy.
Several years ago, Rabbi Lustig suggested that homemade challah would be a special addition to our WHC
Shabbat observance. Since then, our 3rd and 4th grade
Religious School students at Temple and JBSC have participated in a challah-braiding program where they learn
about the meaning of community and the variety of ways
every community member can make a positive impact. At
the program, congregant volunteers show students how to
work with the dough, braid it carefully to form a challah, and wrap each loaf until it is ready to bake on Friday
afternoons. Our Religious School students gain a sense of
importance, knowing they are a crucial part of each and
every Shabbat celebration here at WHC. Families attend
services at least once during the year so their child can help
present and serve the challah.
If you would like to help students braid the challah and
experience the importance of their work, please contact
Stephanie Tankel, Director of Religious Education,
stankel@whctemple.org or 202-895-6338.

Raquela: A Woman of Israel with WHC Books
Join WHC Books at Temple on the third night of Hanukkah, Tuesday, December 8, at 7:00 pm to light the hanukkiyah, eat latkes, and discuss Raquela: A Woman of Israel by
distinguished journalist Ruth Gruber.
This National Jewish Book Award–winning biography
is a fascinating look at the early years of Israel’s statehood
experienced through the life of a pioneering nurse. Raquela
Prywes was a ninth-generation Jerusalemite, graduated
from the Hadassah-Henrietta Szold School of Nursing,
delivered babies in a Holocaust refugee camp and on the
Israeli frontier, crossed minefields to aid injured soldiers
in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and organized hospitals to save the lives of those
fighting the 1967 Six-Day War. Along the way, Raquela’s own life was a series of
triumphs and tragedies mirroring those of the newly formed Jewish state.
To borrow a copy of Raquela from WHC’s library, please contact Ellen Share,
eshare@whctemple.org or 301-354-3212. Purchasing this book on Amazon
through the WHC Mitzvah Mall, whctemple.org/WHCMitzvahMall, benefits
social justice programs for WHC’s youth.
The Archive Thief and Its Author at Sisterhood
Literary Group
American University professor Lisa Moses Leff will speak
about her newly published book, The Archive Thief, at the
next gathering of the Sisterhood Literary Group on Friday,
December 4 at 10:00 am at JBSC.
The Archive Thief is the true story of Jewish historian
Zosa Szajkowski, who, in the aftermath of the Holocaust,
gathered up tens of thousands of documents from Nazi
buildings in Berlin, and later, public archives and private
synagogues in France, and moved them all, illicitly, to New
York. Part detective story, part analysis of the construction of history, The Archive Thief offers a window into the
debates over the rightful ownership of contested Jewish archives and the powerful
ideological, economic, and psychological forces that have made Jewish scholars
care so deeply about preserving the remnants of their past.
All are welcome. It is not necessary to read the book prior to December 4, but
feel free to bring it with you as Professor Leff will copies after her talk. Kindly
RSVP to Susan Adland, sfadland@gmail.com.
