Volume 56, Issue 4 February 23, 2015 Co Co regation g n versatio O n March 20, 1911, 13-year-old Andrei Yushchinsky was found stabbed to death in a cave on the outskirts of Kiev. Four months later, Russian police arrested Mendel Beilis, a 37-year-old father of five who worked as a clerk in a brick factory nearby, and charged him not only with Andrei’s murder, but also with the Jewish ritual murder of a Christian child. Despite the fact that there was no evidence linking him to the crime and that he had a solid alibi, Beilis was imprisoned for more than two years before being brought to trial. The Beilis case aroused furor and exposed rabid anti-Semitism at the highest levels of Tsarist Russia. It will be the focus Edmund Levin’s Amram Scholar Series lecture at Temple on Sunday, March 1 at 10:30 am, when he joins us to discuss his book, A Child of Christian Blood. Described as the most sensational court case of its time, the Beilis trial attracted worldwide attention, with Arthur Conan Doyle, Thomas Hardy, H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Mann, and the archbishops of York and Canterbury publicly protesting the actions of the Russian government. The story ultimately served as the Continued on page 4. n al s n Murder and Anti-Semitism in Tsarist Russia In Israel Continue the “Congregational Conversation” This Summer in Israel C ongregational Conversations has been a dynamic and intimate way for WHC members to engage in the reality of Israel, Zionism, and Jewish identity through the study and discussion of Ari Shavit’s My Promised Land. With more than 300 congregants engaged in our Conversations, many have asked if we could take our discussion “on the road” and continue it in Israel. We are delighted to announce an adult opportunity to embrace Israel from June 13 - June 24 with Rabbi Bruce and Amy Lustig. Continued on page 7. European Jews and Muslims: Embracing a Common Destiny S amia Hathroubi, the Paris-based European Coordinator for the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU), will speak at Temple on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:00 pm as part of an important community program focused on how Jews and Muslims in Europe can move forward together after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. Ms. Hathroubi believes passionately that Muslims and Jews in France and Europe are not destined to be enemies, but instead must build solid ties of communication and cooperation. She will share her recent experience leading an inspirational Muslim-Jewish delegation at the Paris Unity March following the terror attacks, and outline joint efforts by Jewish and Muslim comContinued on page 7. Services WHC News Nominees Sought for WHC Avodah Honors Awards Avodah Honors Awards will again be presented at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 31 to members of our Congregation selected in recognition of their service within our Temple and the greater Washington community. The interpretation of avodah is “good deeds in the form of service and work.” What better time could there be to honor those among us who provide such unselfish service than at our Annual Meeting, when we focus on the accomplishments of the Congregation? We ask you, our congregants, to recommend individuals to be considered for this honor. Because our Congregation is truly blessed with many deserving individuals, some of the names submitted will be considered for a future awards ceremony. Please note that past presidents, Temple staff, and employees will be honored at occasions other than the Avodah Awards ceremony. Please submit your recommendations for honorees by Wednesday, April 1 to the attention of the Avodah Committee at Temple, 3935 Macomb St. NW, Washington, DC 20016, or by email to mthompson@whctemple.org. Kindly include your name, telephone number, and email address, along with the nominee’s name, telephone number, and their contribution with our Congregation and/ or the Washington community. WHC Books to Discuss A Tale of Love and Darkness WHC Books will discuss A Tale of Love and Darkness, a memoir by bestselling and award-winning author Amos Oz, at Temple on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:00 pm. Winner of the National Jewish Book Award and the Goethe Prize, this “social history embedded within an autobiography” is translated by Nicholas de Lange in a way “that preserves the author’s gorgeous, discursive style and his love of wordplay” (New York Magazine). Oz tells of Jerusalem in the 1940s when it was under British rule — a city full of people with various ideologies who were either refugees or survivors of the Holocaust. Borrow a copy of this bestselling book from the WHC library by contacting Ellen Share, 301-354-3212 or eshare@whctemple.org, or purchase on Amazon through the WHC Mitzvah Mall, whcmitzvahmall.org. The school underwent a renovation in 2013 and now has larger classrooms, brightly painted walls, and a recently completed state-of-the-art playground. There is also a new principal this year, Kim Spence (see below), who is passionate about her professional learning communities—weekly meetings to discuss what’s working in the classroom, and what’s not. She says, “we look at the academic condition of each student, one at a time, and discuss how to support them.” WHC’s volunteer projects continue at the school, and we are grateful to everyone who gives their time, resources, and attention to the children at the Southeast D.C. public school named for WHC’s second senior rabbi. Below are some of the efforts our energy and resources support. Book Buddies: This year we are working with nearly half of the second grade students, many of whom were among our book buddies last year as first graders. Thanksgiving Baskets: WHC congregants generously donated time and funding on Mitzvah Monday so that every Simon family — there are over 200 of them — could enjoy a lovely Thanksgiving dinner. MLK Day of Service: The weather outside is freezing but our little Head Start students at Simon have brand new cozy blankets, lovingly made by MLK Day of Service volunteers, for use during nap time. Van Ness Knitters: Handmade hats and sweaters from the WHC women who call themselves the Van Ness Knitters arrived at the school just in time for this winter’s arctic blasts. These ladies have been knitting for the Simon students for 10 years! Winter Camp: That’s right, winter camp! We were excited to provide funding that enabled 14 Simon alumni to attend this new teen program at Camp Moss Hollow over winter break where students learned study skills and received special mentoring. The cost of winter camp is approximately $300 per student. Summer Camp: And of course there is summertime at Camp Moss Hollow. Last year, WHC sponsored 43 students, who each spent a week at this beautiful camp in the Shenendoah Valley. It costs $350 per student, and we are hopeful that your generous contributions will once again enable many children to have this experience. Dayeinu!! Any of the above projects on its own would have brought joy to the students and families. However, WHC is blessed with a congregation that consistently remembers the Abram Simon School, which enables the committee and its volunteers to do so much more. We thank you so much for all you have done and continue to do. Interested learning more? Contact Mary DeOreo, marydeoreo@gmail.com, or Elissa Oshinsky, mitzvahmommy@aol. com. A Letter from Abram Simon Elementary School Principal Kim Spence Dear Rabbi Lustig, I’m writing to introduce myself to you and your congregants at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. I am Kim Spence, the new Principal at the Abram Simon School, and in my first few months here, I’ve been delighted to learn about the wonderful partnership your congregation has fostered over the years with my new school. What a blessing it is to have such a reliable community partner, your congregation’s thoughtfulness and commitment has been evident from the day I arrived here, from the flowers which unexpectedly arrived here our first day of school, the Book “Buddies” who show up weekly to work with our second grade students, the Thanksgiving baskets so generously donated to all of our families, the winter camp and the cozy handmade sweaters...the list just keeps on growing! So I want to thank you and all of my new friends at Washington Hebrew Congregation, both personally and on behalf of the students, staff and families at Simon. I appreciate your congregation’s generosity and its commitment, and I look forward to getting to know you all better, and to continue to advance and grow our partnership and our friendship. Yours truly, Kim Spence, Principal 6 WHC News Make Your Voice Heard in Israel! Vote in the 2015 World Zionist Congress Election You have an important — and real — opportunity to make your voice as a Reform Jew heard by voting for the ARZA slate of delegates (which includes our own Rabbi Susan Shankman) in the 2015 World Zionist Congress election. By casting your vote for the ARZA – Representing Reform Judaism slate to fill those 145 seats, you are voting to promote the egalitarian, pluralistic, peaceful vision of Judaism in Israel: Women’s Rights & Gender Equality: We strive to create a world in which gender equality is the rule — where men and women can pray, work, and live together as equals deserving of the same respect and honor. Religious Equality: We envision and work for a society in which all denominations are treated fairly and with respect — and all of us are seen as Jews, regardless of our level of observance. Peace: Lasting peace, security, and stability for Israel, the Palestinians, and the surrounding Middle East region is possible through a commitment to a twostate solution. Although the road may seem long, we are building the path to that peace every day. You are eligible to vote at reformjews4israel.org/vote if you: 1. are Jewish, 2. will be 18 years or older by June 2015, 3. are a resident of the United States, and 4. pay the $10 ($5 for those under age 30) American Zionist Movement election registration fee. Not eligible to vote? You can still help. Spread the word to family and friends to ensure that all Reform and progressive Jews in your personal networks vote ARZA – Representing Reform Judaism. The American Zionist Movement’s (AZM) election will determine U.S. Jewish representation to the World Zionist Congress, the highest legislative body of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). The WZO provides a forum for all the world’s Jews to come together and deliberate about issues affecting both Diaspora Jews and the state of affairs in Israel. European Muslims and Jews (continued from page 1) munity leaders to fight anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, and protect freedom of religion for all Europeans. Following Ms. Hathroubi’s remarks, a panel of Muslims and Jewish leaders, including Rabbi Lustig, will discuss the situation in Europe today and how to work together moving forward. This event is hosted by WHC and FFEU and presented in partnership by ADAMS Center, AJC, Greater Washington Muslim-Jewish Forum, Islamic Society of North America, Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, Masjid Muhammad, Religious Action Center, and Shoulder to Shoulder. Congregational Conversations Israel Trip (continued from page 1) On our “Journey Through the Triumph and Tragedy of Israel,” we will engage face-to-face with authors, artists, social activists, and scholars who all struggle, just as we do, with the complexities and wonders of Israel. This is a trip focusing not on siteseeing but on insight building, a trip which will look at the difficult questions and how divergent narratives challenge us and our assumptions. Our carefully crafted itinerary will follow the themes of My Promised Land and has been developed in conjunction with Julian Resnick, a gifted educator and one time WHC scholarin-residence, who is the current international leader of the Habonim Zionist movement. This engaging opportunity to continue our conversation will be accompanied by cultural and culinary experiences that are far from the ordinary: lunch at one of Israel’s best boutique wineries, overnights at Israel’s most celebrated spas, an afternoon at Jerusalem’s colorful marketplace Machaneh Yehudah, and the opportunity to purchase ingredients for a cooking class and dinner feast with one of Israel’s most creative culinary artists. Whether it is your first trip to Israel or your tenth, we promise it will be your most engaging. This trip is limited by design and space and will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. If there is sufficient interest, there will be an extension, which will feature many of the traditional Israel experiences not included in our journey. Grieving a Recent Loss? WHC Bereavement Group Offers Support Grief can be devastating. Basic beliefs are challenged, emotions can feel out of control, and energy is depleted. We know that shared experience and education can be helpful during bereavement. WHC’s Bereavement Support Group, facilitated by Erica Berger, LICSW, provides mutual support and education to those who have experienced a loss during the last 18 months. Limited in size to eight participants, the program, sponsored by the Edlavtich-Tyser Family Relations Forum, will be held at Temple at 7:00 pm on Tuesdays, from April 7– May 12. It recognizes each person’s unique way of grieving and provides a confidential and respectful environment for the bereaved to explore his or her feelings, begin working through complex issues of loss, and start to heal. If you would like to participate, please contact Layne Weiss, lweiss@whctemple.org or 202-895-6307, by Monday, March 30. 9 March 2015 Sunday 1 9:45am Divorcing with Dignity (M) Monday 2 10:00am SIS mtg (B) 6:00pm WHECTY Board Mtg (B) 10:30am Amram Lecture with Edmund Levin 12:00pm Jr. ETY (M) 6:30pm 12JQ (M) Celebrate Your Hero: #WHCPurim2015 Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 3 6:30pm Fistful of Shekels (M) 4 9:00am SIS Cooking for Homeless (B) 6:30pm Confirmation (M) 10:00am Back to Basics (B) 7:30pm Back to Basics (M) 7:30pm Back to Basics (B) 5 10:00am Conversational Hebrew (B) 12:00pm Purim Carnival (B) 8 7:00pm ConCon (M) 9 6:30pm 12JQ (M) 7:00pm WHC Academy (M) 10 6:30pm Confirmation (M) 7:00pm WHC Books (M) 7:30pm Back to Basics (M) 10:00am ConCon (M) 15 10:00am Mah Jongg Tournament (B) 16 12:30pm PT Luncheon (M) 6:30pm WHECTY Night Out (OUT) 7:00pm ConCon (B) 18 No School for E-T ECC (M) 22 23 7:00pm “A Night at the Opera” (M) 24 12 19 7:30pm B to B (B) 25 9:00am Early Torah (M) 26 7:30pm B to B (B) 7:30pm Back to Basics (M) 5:30pm Lay Led Service (M) 6:00pm Purim Congregational Dinner (M) 5:30pm Havdalah (M) 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 13 7:00pm 2239 Purim Bash (OUT) 7:00pm CC Dinner (OUT) 7:00pm WHECTY Purim Lock-in (B) 9:00am Early Torah (M) 10:00am SIS Shabbaton & Seder (B) 6:00pm Shirei Shabbat Service (M) 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 5:00pm Club 56 (OUT) 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 20 21 9:00am Tot Shabbat (B) 5:30pm Lay Led Service (M) 9:00am Early Torah (M) 6:00pm Shabbat Service (M) 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 7:00pm ConCon “Pray & Stay” Dinner (M) 5:30pm Havdalah (M) 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 27 9:00am Early Torah (M) 1:30pm WHC Hunger Project (B) 6:30pm 12JQ (M) 7:00pm 2239 Program (M) 10 30 6:00pm WHECTY Bd Mtg (M) 7:00pm WHC Academy (M) 31 6:30pm Confirmation (M) 7:30pm Back to Basics (M) 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 5:30pm Lay Led Service (M) 5:30pm Havdalah (M) 7:30pm ConCon (M) Key: (M) Macomb (B) Julia Bindeman Suburban Center (12JQ) 12 Jewish Questions (AS) Amram Scholar Series (B to B) Back to Basics (BRO) Brotherhood (CSH) Carrie Simon House (CISA) Community Issues/Social Action (CC) Couples Club 28 5:00pm Tot Shabbat (M) 7:00pm 2239 Metro Minyan (OUT) 29 14 5:30pm Lay Led Service (M) 6:00pm PMP Shabbat Svc w/Rick Recht (M) 10:30am Amram Lecture with David Kertzer (M) 7 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 5:30pm Havdalah (M) 10:00am B to B (B) 10:00am B to B (B) 6 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 8:00pm Shabbat Purim Oneg (M) Purim 7:30pm Back to Basics (M) 12:00pm ETY (M) 9:45am Divorcing with Dignity (M) 17 6:30pm Upper School and Confirmation (M) 11 10:00am SIS Bridge (B) 10:00am B to B (B) 6:30pm CSH Volunteer Mtg (M) 7:00pm The Red Stone (M) 7:00pm Mitzvah Day Mtg (B) 7:30pm B to B (B) 7:30pm CISA Mtg (M) Saturday 7:00pm Shabbat Purim (M) 7:00pm WHC Academy (M) Erev Purim Friday (ECC) Early Childhood Centers (ET) Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum (HS) Hebrew School (OUT) Out of the Building (PMP) Pollin Music Program (PT) Prime Timers (RS) Religious School (SIS) Sisterhood (US) Upper School SAVE THE DATE!
