Amram to Focus on Clinton Years
With Scholar Gil Troy
W
ith the potential White House
return of Hillary and Bill Clinton after next fall’s Presidential election, the Amram Scholar Series will
examine The Age of Clinton: America
in the 1990s with a lecture by political historian Gil Troy on Wednesday,
December 16 at 7:00 pm at Temple.
A popular professor of history
at McGill University and a visiting
scholar at the Brookings Institution,
Dr. Troy is the widely quoted and
published author of 11 books and of
weekly columns in The Daily Beast and
The Jerusalem Post. In 2012, he edited
and updated the classic multi-volume
History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M.
Schlesinger Jr. and Fred Israel.
“The 1990s was a decade of extreme change,” he says. “Seismic shifts
in culture, politics, and technology
radically altered the way Americans
did business, expressed themselves,

and thought about their role in the
world. At the center of it all was Bill
Clinton, the talented, charismatic,
and flawed Baby Boomer president
and his controversial, polarizing, but
increasingly popular wife, Hillary.”
The Clinton White House years
personified the decade’s “noble
aspirations, notable achievements,
missed opportunities, and embarrassing excesses,” Dr. Troy suggests.
A self-described “Zionist activist,” he
explores Bill Clinton’s quest for peace
in the Middle East, depicting the
President’s love for Israel and his fury
at Yasir Arafat for undermining the
Oslo Peace Process.
Born in New York and educated
at Harvard University, Dr. Troy joins
our Amram lineup at this timely political moment in cooperation with
the Jewish Book Council.

& Havdalah …with Astro Doughnuts, dreidels, latkes, and more!
Join us at Temple on Friday, December 11
Shabbat Hanukkah is a festive family affair at Washington Hebrew Congregation! Begin the evening at 6:00 pm with a family-style dinner before the 7:00 pm
Shabbat Hanukkah service. We invite you to bring your hanukkiyah and help us
fill the sanctuary with the beautiful glow of candlelight as we light our hanukkiyot
together (safely, in sand- and foil-covered tables).
The service will feature “visual t’filah” on a screen above the bimah. In addition to the evening’s liturgy, we will tell the Hanukkah story, filled with symbols
of freedom, bravery, light, and hope, and end the service with a Hanukkah sing
along!
The festive fun continues at our oneg in Kreeger Lobby. Nibble on Hanukkah
treats, make an edible dreidel, have your face painted, and try your hand at Rabbi
Lustig’s “dreidel table” where everyone’s a winner! Then, step just outside our
doors to the Astro Doughnuts truck and enjoy a freshly-baked sweet treat served
up by very some special guests.
Registration is required if you would like to join us for dinner. The cost is $20
for adults, $10 children ages 3 –12, and free for children under 3. You can purchase tickets on our website, whctemple.org/Hanukkah. For more information,
please contact Jonathan Honigman, jhonigman@whctemple.org or 301-354-3223.
Make it a special holiday for all children and bring an item
for our toy drives! (See page eight for details.)

It’s Clash of the Classes
for 8th – 12th Graders
Which grade will reign supreme?
We will find out on Saturday,
January 9 at 6:00 pm at JBSC
when our 8th, 9th, and 10th graders compete in an annual color
war for the coveted Clash of the
Classes trophy! Juniors and seniors have a hand in the fun too,
staffing games and judging the
competition. Competitors and
judges, come on time — we’ll
feed you before sending you into
“battle!” Be sure to stay until the
end — not just to see who wins the trophy — but for a mind-blowing performance by magician Danny Dubin.
There is no charge to participate, this program is part of the Upper School programming, but we do need you to RSVP. Register by December 18 and receive a
t-shirt in your class color: 8th grade – blue, 9th grade – red, 10th grade – green, 11th
and 12th grades – purple. Sign up online, whctemple.org/ClashoftheClasses.

Einstein: His Space and Times
Amram Talk by Steven Gimbel
A politically
engaged man of
his times, driven
by strong moral
principles, Albert
Einstein comes
to life in a new
biography by
Steven Gimbel,
chair of the Gettysburg College
Philosophy Department and our Amram speaker at Temple
on Sunday, January 10 at 10:30 am.
“An avowed pacifist, Einstein’s mistrust of authority and
outspoken social and scientific views earned him death
threats from Nazi sympathizers in the years preceding
World War II,” Professor Gimbel says. “To him, science
provided not only a means for understanding the universe,
but a foundation for considering the deeper questions of
life — and a way for the worldwide Jewish community to
gain confidence and pride in itself.”
Professor Gimbel, the author of six books, explains Einstein’s theories in understandable terms and demonstrates
how they directly emerged from the realities of his times
and helped create the world we live in today. Save the date!

many children as possible have a joyful experience this season.

MLK Day of Service is coming up next month. Now is a great time
to go through your closets and donate gently used (or new!) clothing
(all ages/sizes) that we will sort and pack on MLK Day of Service for
