A popular professor of history at McGill University and a visiting scholar at the Brookings Institution, Dr. Troy is the widely quoted and published author of 11 books and of weekly columns in The Daily Beast and The Jerusalem Post. In 2012, he edited and updated the classic multi-volume History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. and Fred Israel. “The 1990s was a decade of extreme change,” he says. “Seismic shifts in culture, politics, and technology radically altered the way Americans did business, expressed themselves, Continued on page 2. WHC News The Clinton Years (continued from page 1) and thought about their role in the world. At the center of it all was Bill Clinton, the talented, charismatic, and flawed Baby Boomer president and his controversial, polarizing, but increasingly popular wife, Hillary.” The Clinton White House years personified the decade’s “noble aspirations, notable achievements, missed opportunities, and embarrassing excesses,” Dr. Troy suggests. A self-described “Zionist activist,” he explores Bill Clinton’s quest for peace in the Middle East, depicting the President’s love for Israel and his fury at Yasir Arafat for undermining the Oslo Peace Process. Born in New York and educated at Harvard University, Dr. Troy joins our Amram lineup at this timely political moment in cooperation with the Jewish Book Council. Begin the evening at 6:00 pm with a family-style dinner before the 7:00 pm Shabbat Hanukkah service. We invite you to bring your hanukkiyah and help us fill the sanctuary with the beautiful glow of candlelight as we light our hanukkiyot together (safely, in sand- and foil-covered tables). The service will feature “visual t’filah” on a screen above the bimah. In addition to the evening’s liturgy, we will tell the Hanukkah story, filled with symbols of freedom, bravery, light, and hope, and end the service with a Hanukkah sing along! The festive fun continues at our oneg in Kreeger Lobby. Nibble on Hanukkah treats, make an edible dreidel, have your face painted, and try your hand at Rabbi Lustig’s “dreidel table” where everyone’s a winner! Then, step just outside our doors to the Astro Doughnuts truck and enjoy a freshly-baked sweet treat served up by very some special guests. Registration is required if you would like to join us for dinner. The cost is $20 for adults, $10 children ages 3 –12, and free for children under 3.
