Recovery 301
This month we continue in our education of the 12 Steps of Recovery. We’ve already looked at steps
1-6 which leaves us with steps 7-12. Where the first 6 steps focuses on the individual and the work
that is done to overcome the inward struggles that is faced, step 7 begins the process of letting go of
those struggles and repairing the relationships that have been strained.
7. We humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings.
In step 6 a decision was made to begin the process of removing the defects of character that has
brought the person to this point. Step 7 is the point in which the person turns these shortcomings
over to God. It is the moment of confession. It is the move to surrender not only the defects of character but the entire character over to the care of God. This is the freedom that each and every person longs for. And the freedom isn’t just from the compulsive behavior, but from the sins and struggles of the world that was taken away for us by Jesus.
Step 7’s foundational Scripture is found in 1 John 1:9:
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. - 1 John 1:9
8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them
all.
Now begins the work of reconciliation which isn’t an easy task, but is much lighter now after experiencing the freedom from step 7. Where step 4 was an inventory of the individual, this list is an inventory of the lives affected by the person’s compulsions.
What better Scripture passage to guide this step than the golden rule found in Luke 6:31:
Do to others as you would have them do to you. - Luke 6:31
9. We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would
injure them or others
Now for more action. The person can’t just make a list, the list has to be acted on. And this step can
be exciting because it’s the moment the person gets the opportunity to offer something (apology)
without looking for something in return. This action may be the first time in a long time or first time
ever the person’s action and motivation is selfless instead of selfish.
The foundational Scripture for step 9 is found in the gospel of Matthew:
Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there you remember that your brother has
something against you, leave your gift at the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother, then
come and offer your gift. - Matthew 5:23-24
Next month we will conclude our look at the 12 Steps of Recovery with the maintenance steps that
guide, encourage, and motivate the life long process of recovery.

Children’s Ministry . . . .
Children’s Ministries is sponsoring a family trip to the zoo on Monday,
August 1st. Tickets will be $10 for all ages 4 years and older; 3 years
and younger are free. Public school teachers are free with school id. We
will meet at the church at 9:30AM. The first 15 people to sign up on
Michelle Hurton’s office door can ride in the church vans. Other vehicles are charged a $5 parking fee at the zoo. Please bring a bagged lunch or lunches can
be purchased on your own at the zoo. Everyone attending is asked to sign up and ticket
fees can be given to Michelle Hurton. Additional information on the zoo can be found at
www.zooknoxville.org.
PROMOTION SUNDAY is on Sunday, August 7th at 10am in the sanctuary. Babies born
since September 2015, rising kindergarteners, and rising sixth graders will all be celebrated
with a Bible. Children rising into kindergarten, 2nd, 4th will be promoted to the next Sunday
School class in the Children’s Ministries Department. Students entering sixth grade will enter
the youth department on this day as well. If you are a parent of a child in one of these listed
groups, please make plans to attend this brief celebration with your child(ren). Afterwards, children will go into their new classes and parents will be dismissed.
Beginning September 11th Children’s Church will start back up. Children’s church is
offered for all 2nd service children ages 2nd grade and younger. Children can expect a continued worship experience with interactive age-appropriate messages.
Children worship with their families until dismissed to the small chapel where
they continue worship and are engaged in an interactive age-appropriate message.
Children not only participate, but they lead the service; everything from opening
prayer, to praise music, to the reading of the word. Our first sermon series is
from the book of Mark and each week we will engage in different multi-sensory
activities designed to help us discover Jesus. We do not have Children’s Church
on first Sundays.
Children’s Church is taking a break for the summer months. We will resume Sunday, August 14.

Thank you Surf Shack Seymour Volunteers! Thank you for donating YOU. Thank you for pouring your hearts into these children all week. Everyone is busy and has to make choices about
how they spend their time, their energy, and their resources. We are so
grateful that you followed God’s call to serve His children and His church
with us – and to share the love of Jesus! Surf Shack Seymour VBS was an
amazing week for children. Thank you for serving!
Thank you Seymour UMC family for your prayers, for your donations, for inviting children, and for all who volunteered behind the scenes.
This has truly been a church wide effort.
We made several significant changes this year and saw new successes.
To start, we added middle school programming. As a result, we had over
a dozen middle school kids come out, bring friends, and they had a blast.
We saw less preschoolers but a lot more elementary age children this year
so that was okay. This year we tried to offer more by offering less. By cutting a couple of the stations, we were able to really focus on the things the
kids enjoy most. Our schedule was less hurried and our shared meal was
more relaxed and social. We also tried to invest our resources into some
bigger-ticket items and activities and they were very well received. We
had water activities each night, ending with a family pool party and this
was a big hit with the kids. The 90˚+ temperatures every day probably
had something to with that.
All in all, this VBS event did many valuable things. It brought church
members of all ages and stages together serving side by side. It brought
kids and families onto our campus. It allowed children to learn about Jesus, worship, play, and discover God’s Amazing Love for them.
Thank you for helping to make that happen.
