IngREADients - The
Cook Book Club
Dear Readers,
Learn why Jeanette
Winterson’s Oranges Are
Not The Only Fruit garnered
a controversial amount of
attention. At the same time,
uncover the secrets of fruits
and vegetables!
As much as we try to stick to the recommended minimum of 8–hour sleep regime and follow the
advice of ‘Early to bed, early to rise, makes you healthy wealthy and wise’, more often than not
we find ourselves tossing and turning in bed in effort to fall asleep. Among the many reasons
quoted for not getting that much–needed slumber include stress and the consumption of coffee.
Not getting sufficient rest is not something to be taken lightly. In the long run, it can affect the
level of concentration and judgement.
23
To find out how you can cultivate healthy sleeping habits, join us for a three–pronged Mind
Journey workshop (page 18) organised by the Health Promotion Board. You will also learn the
techniques to improving your memory and developing your social skills.
Do you know that there are about two million trees planted along roadsides and parks? While
trees add beauty and colour, they also offer a welcome respite against the scorching sun. How
well do you know your trees? Do you know the name of the heritage trees that is featured on
the back of the $5 currency note? To find out more about the name of this tree and other trees,
join Gan Khing (National Parks) in this Learning Journey: Heritage Tree and Heritage Roads Tour
(page 16).

More on heritage – Yishun is a bustling town and a thriving residential area. But, do you know
that Yishun New Town used to be a fishing village and plantation? How much has Yishun
changed? Now here’s an opportunity for you! Join Tony O’Dempsey as he speaks on the
changes that have affected the natural and cultural environment of Yishun (page 16).
Last but not least, have you heard of Kuti–Kuti or five–stones? The former is a popular game
during the mid 20th century, which requires a minimum of two players. With skill and accuracy,
players must cleverly flip the colourful plastic tokens on top of those of their opponent. Before
computer hand-held devices such as Popeye, Octupus and Parachute, this traditional game
was so popular during its heyday that there were variations including using bottle caps from the
then F&N glass bottles! Do you remember playing this game? What was life back then? Check
out this story “Life of Uncle Haq’ and other stories in the singaporememoryproject (page 46).
Charles Williams once said, “I think in order to move forward into the future, you need to know
where you’ve been.” An apt statement, don’t you think?

Programme Zone, Marine Parade

Physical theatre is a visual form of
drama that uses the physical body as
a storytelling device. It uses minimal
and close to no dialogue. Our piece
uses dance, atmospheric music
and images to convey emotions
and inspire thought. In contrast to
traditional Western forms of theatre,
physical theatre in the Asian context
is about using natural imagery and
emotions to explore relevant issues.
In particular, we will be using the
Japanese theatre form Butoh, which
relies heavily on using the body to
create and convey abstraction. For
this piece, we will be using the play
Nurhalizah written by local playwright
Geraldine Song to explore issues of
ageing, death and loneliness.
This programme is brought to you by
Alterity Productions, a newly-formed
theatre and literary group.
This play is targeted at Youths and
Adults. This programme is free
however registration is still required.

An Introduction to Visually Mediated Communication
and its Types
Use of Visual Tools in Classroom,
Home and Community
by Sunitha Sendhilnathan, Head, Department of Speech and
Language Pathology
by Paulene Shekinah, Speech and
Language Therapist
Communication is a common problem among individuals
with disabilities. They often have difficulty understanding
even the simplest spoken communication from
others. Visual communication tools such as objects,
photographs, picture symbols, daily schedules and
choice boards can provide the support necessary to
greatly improve a person’s understanding and ability
to communicate, helping an individual to be more
active, independent and successful participants in their
lives. This talk is designed to give an introduction on
use of visuals to support the communication needs of
children/adults/elderly who cannot speak due to various
conditions such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and loss of
speech after a Stroke, Dementia and other disorders that
limit effective speech and communication.
Visual supports can be provided in
a variety of ways across multiple
settings. Each individual’s abilities and
communication needs must be carefully
assessed before a visual support
system is introduced taking strong care
that communication needs will vary
according to the setting the individual
is in. An individual can be trained
systematically to comprehend the use
of a visual system to communicate and
this talk will explore such use and its
factors.

Raffles’ Letters: Intrigues behind the Founding
of Singapore reveals important insights into the
Founding of Singapore in 1819 through 20 letters
written by Sir Stamford Raffles.
13 of the letters are made available by the generosity
of The Bute Collection at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute,
Scotland. These letters originated from the private
papers of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of
Hastings, who supported Raffles’s efforts to establish
a new British settlement in the East Indies, which
eventually led to the founding of Singapore in 1819.
Another highlight is a replica of what is believed to be
the first landward map of Singapore. Dated 1820, the
map contains details that are not seen in subsequent
maps and shows the Singapore Town in its infancy.

A Death in the Lucky Holiday Hotel
Pin Ho, Wenguang Huang, 2013 Public Affairs
The 100-year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the
Window and Disappeared
Jonas Jonasson, 2011 Hyperion Books
Bo Xilai the son of Bo Yibo was made governor
of Dalian which he transformed into the Hong
Kong of the north. He was promoted to Party
Secretary of Chongqing which he developed
into a prosperous province. His father was a
comrade of Mao Tse Tung and a member of the
powerful Politburo. Like his father, he had an eye
for beautiful women. His first wife was Li Danyu
with whom he had a son. He divorced Li to marry
Gu Kailai, the youngest daughter of General Gu
Jingsheng who fought a great and victorious
battle against the Americans in the Korean war.
Bo and Gu became known as the Jack and
Jackie Kennedy of China. What more could they
have wanted? The top post of China. That was
the downfall of Bo.
When his famous police chief Wang Lijun got into
political trouble for his connections with corrupt
officials in Tieling, Bo refused to help him for fear
that his involvement would jeopardise his own
position. Wang then tried to manoeuvre Gu into
helping him and when that failed he schemed
to have a British national, Neil Heyward, a close
family friend of Bo and Gu, killed. He convinced
Gu that Heyward would harm her son Bo
Guagua and, consequently, lured Heyward to
the Lucky Holiday Hotel to meet Gu. There she
poisoned him with rat poison. Wang promised
to cover up the deed in return for Bo’s help. Bo
publicly slapped Wang and when Wang realized
that Bo was out to get rid of him, fled to the US
consulate for protection. That started a chain
of events leading to the arrest of Wang and his
trial. By then, Wang had provided information
about Bo’s corrupt dealings as well as Gu’s
murder of Heyward. Wang was sentenced to 15
years imprisonment and Gu was tried soon after
Wang. She was convicted even though there
was evidence (from a Chinese pathologist) that
the cyanide in the rat poison was insufficient to
kill Heyward. Wang as Bo’s ruthless police chief
JUNE 2013 // golibrary.nlb.gov.sg
was known for framing people and obtaining
confessions.
The intrigue surrounding Heyward’s death was
only a minor drama. The big play came from
Bo’s rivals in the Politburo who moved swiftly
to oust Bo from contention for a place in the
Politburo in the 2012 Party Congress. The
political intrigue involved the highest echelons
of the Chinese leadership. The story weaved
family relationship with politics. Gu wanted to
send Guagua overseas for studies and was first
interested in sending him to Singapore. So she
came here for some time to stay but eventually
decided to send him to England where Heyward
became Guagua’s guardian and mentor. When
Gu became seriously ill, Wang convinced her
that Li Danyu and her son (by Bo) were the ones
who poisoned her with lead and mercury. His
influence over her caused a rift between Bo and
her. In the meantime, Bo found that his political
alliance with Hu Jintao and Zhou Yongkang
became wobbly. Zhou was the chief of the
powerful security apparatus and was known as
China’s J Edgar Hoover. Zhou had planned to
pass his position in the Politburo to Bo but the
events concerning Wang and Gu forced him to
look after himself.
This is an absorbing book about
the alliances and politics in Chinese
leadership. It is also a book about egos and
the hunger for power. It is full of stories
of how Chinese leaders suffered and later
rehabilitated. Xi Jingping, the man who
ultimately won, was himself a political
victim when he was young even though he
was the son of a powerful comrade of Mao
Tse Tung. Might Bo return one day?

The idea of a centenarian being involved in
adventure of any sort is preposterous. One
would have laughed off the adventures of the
sort that the 100-year-old Allan Emmanuel
Karlsson had in this book by Jonas Jonasson,
published in Swedish in 2009 (and translated
by Rod Bradbury into English in 2011). Laugh
we would but only because it was also as
humourous as it was entertaining. It charmed
the world, not only for the brilliant interweaving
plots but also in producing a cast of unlikely
characters and making them so wicked yet so
funny. There are two stories in this novel. The
first concerned the centenarian who escaped
from the Old Folks Home on the eve of his
100th birthday party. Shortly after he escaped,
Allan Karlsson impulsively stole a suitcase at
a railway station from Bengt Bylund (“Bolt”),
an underworld courier. From then on, he sped
through the next month or so in a fast-paced
adventure in which not only Swedish gangsters
but also the police went hunting for him and
the three accomplices he picked up along the
way. There were 50 million Swedish crowns (a
lot of money) in the suitcase. Allan Karlsson first
enlisted the help of a railway supervisor, the
67-year-old Julius Jonsson; then he found Benny
Ljungberg, a hot-dog seller who became their
get-away chauffeur; and finally, Gunilla Björklund
(“the Beauty”) who not only possessed great
beauty, but also a small Asian elephant named
Sonya.
Bolt was killed when he tried to recover
his suitcase from Karlsson and Jonsson.
Enraged, the Mafia boss, Per-Gunnar
Gerdin sent Henrik (“the Bucket”) Hultén
to find Bolt as well as the suitcase. Hultén
ended up dead and Gerdin found himself in
hot pursuit of the thieves. Chasing the bus
that the Karlsson gang rented (because
that was the only vehicle that Sonya could
fit in), Gerdin’s BMW skidded and wrapped
itself round a tree, blood was everywhere
but the gang took Gerdin’s body down and
brought him with them. By this time, Chief
Inspector Aronsson became suspicious.
His reports led Prosecutor Ranelid to
imagine himself a hero when (he hoped)
he had prosecuted Karlsson for a triple
murder even though none of the bodies
had been found. There had been only
twice in Swedish history that a murderer
had been convicted when the prosecution
could not find a corpse. His dream
evaporated when the three bodies turned
up, one after another, far from where they
were supposed to have died.
The second story, interwoven with Karlsson’s
adventure after his escape from the Old Folks
Home, concerned Karlsson’s adventures when
he was young(er). Those adventures sprang
from Karlsson’s talent for explosives. They led
him partly by chance and partly by design, not
only from one adventure to the next, but from
one country to another. He found himself in
the Spanish Civil War, and thereafter helping
Truman build the atomic bomb, and assisting the
British in the Second World War in which he saw
action in the Pacific Theatre. He first sided with
Chiang Kai-Shek and Madam Soong Mei-Ling
but abandoned them after they plotted to kidnap
Jiang Qing (Mao Tse Tung’s wife) to rape and kill
her, and went on to help Jiang Qing instead. He
was imprisoned in Tehran but escaped with a
pastor in an escape second in excitement only
to his escape from Russia (Vladivostok) with
Herbert Einstein, Albert Einstein’s dim-witted
half-brother. Karlsson and Einstein found their
way through Korea to Bali where Einstein married
a native whom he named “Amanda”. Amanda
who was about as bright as Einstein (Herbert)
went into politics and that accounted for a nice,
hilarious segment of Karlsson’s life before he
returned to Sweden and the Old Folks Home
where his second round of adventure began.
Jonasson’s fast-paced humour was the only
thing that kept up with the action.

Selain

The Light between Oceans is the debut novel of M.L. Stedman. Set in the
Australian town of Point Partageuse during the 1920s, this book follows
Tom Sherbourne and his young, bold and loving wife, Isabel. Tom is a
World War I veteran who returns to Australia after the war to take on a
job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the Southwest coast
of Western Australia. Despite being scarred by the horrors of the war, Tom remains
honourable and sincere. He carries out his work at the lighthouse with unimpeachable
honesty and furnishes Isabel with love and care. Initially, Isabel reciprocates with the
same amount of affection but after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, she soon lapses
into depression. One day, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries. A boat has washed
up ashore carrying a dead man and a living baby. As a lighthouse keeper, Tom wants to
report the man and the infant immediately. But seeing that Isabel bonded with the baby
almost immediately, Tom is forced to go against his work ethics and moral obligations.
He lets Isabel keep the baby without fully considering the consequences they will face
back on the mainland.
This book is a celebration of men’s fashion and style. Spread over 312
pages, it contains a rich and comprehensive collection of photographs
that illustrate the revolution in menswear over the last 100 years. The
book is divided into two periods, from 1900 to 1939 and 1940 to the present day, with
a focus on different themes in each period. One can go back in time to the days of top
hats and suits and then return to the modern fashion of Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren.
The photographs are accompanied by notes from notable fashion historian, Cally
Blackman, whose previous publications include 100 Years of Fashion, Costume from
1500 to the Present Day.
This book is an incredible read. Stedman does a wonderful job of first allowing the
reader to become sympathetic towards the main characters despite the wrong decision
they have made, before reminding us of the need to uphold our own moral standing. By
doing so, Stedman ties the emotions of the reader directly to the inner conflicts Tom and
Isabel face in the story. This creates endless heart-wrenching moments for the reader.
This book is bound to impress you with Stedman’s ability to mesmerize the reader with
her vivid descriptions. In The Light between Oceans, the world of Tom and Isabel comes
alive – the reader will feel the sea spray and smell the sea air, relish the details of isolated
living on the tiny island of Janus Rock, feel the grief of a mourning mother, and the inner
turmoil of a despairing husband.
This book attests to the diversity and inventiveness of men’s fashion over the last
century. It demonstrates that men inhabit the fashion arena on equal terms and are as
vital to the fashion industry as women. 100 Years of Menswear is an indispensable guide
for all fashion students and lovers of men’s clothes.

The Straits Trading Company Limited
(STC) is one of the oldest public-listed
companies in Singapore, founded in
1887, when Singapore was part of
the Straits Settlements, under British
Colonial rule. Founded on tin mining
and smelting industries, the company
was a major economic contributor to the
growth and prosperity of Singapore in
the early 19th century. This exhibition
showcases the illustrious history of STC
and provides a glimpse into the heritage
and transformation of one of Singapore’s
most iconic companies, whose growth
and evolution are closely intertwined
with the development and rise of modern
Singapore.
The Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore will be exhibiting the works of 4th
and Thesis Year students from its specialised Design Technology and Sustainability Course.
The works, comprising drawings, videos and models of abstract objects, buildings and components
are made with the state-of-the art rapid prototyping machines that capture complex geometries.
The ethos of technologically-driven design processes is explored in tandem with sustainable
values in an age of environmental degradation, where the design and process of building with less
wastage and carbon impact forms an essential part of the architect’s education. To this end, design
propositions are validated by evidence-based approaches employing energy and daylight simulation
processes including carbon calculating estimates. Such contemporary processes lead to imaginative
propositions that are both an outcome of intelligent processes and artistic intuition, and that can
perform as predicted in the strategic development of form, space, structure, material, manufacturing
and assembly processes.

set up to display a sample
selection of items donated
to the National Library with
the hope of creating a sense
of rootedness through the
preservation of local heritage
content and fulfilling the
library´s function of being
the national memory and
repository of Singapore
heritage materials in all
formats. It is also hoped that
more Singaporeans will be
encouraged to donate their
heritage collections to the
National Library.

The gallery displays the
books, letters, calligraphic
works, manuscripts,
photographs and portraits
of Singapore’s literary
pioneers. Some prominent
writers have also donated
their pens, typewriters and
literary awards. In addition,
visitors can appreciate audio
and video recordings of the
writers in two multimedia
screens.

We live in a fast-paced, hyper-connected world
where information is readily accessible. Massive
amounts of information and data are being
generated daily. Every minute1:
• Google receives over 2 million search queries
• Facebook users share about 700,000 pieces
of content
• YouTube users upload over 48 hours of video
The Internet Archive has over 240 billion
web pages archived from 1996 to January
20132. Every two days now we create as
much information as we did from the dawn
of civilization up until 20033. That is a lot of
information up on the Web! How can we tell
which bits of information is trustworthy?
In both the academic world and the library
and information science (LIS) industry,
the main approach has been to equip
individuals with Information literacy skills
or research skills. Information literacy
is defined as “a set of abilities requiring
individuals to recognise when information
is needed and have the ability to locate,
evaluate, and use effectively the needed
information”4. However, this is a largely
unfamiliar territory to the man in the
street.
Ask the same man if he knows who
“Sherlock Holmes” is, and chances are
that he will. He will probably know at
least one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories.
He should also be able to cite various
film and television adaptations, such as
those that starred Robert Downey, Jr. (Sherlock
Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and Benedict

Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock). He might also
add that his kid reads Sherlock Sam books by
local author A.J. Low.
There are also those who believe that anyone
and everyone can be trained to think like
Sherlock Holmes, such as Harvard-trained Maria
Konnikova, the author of Mastermind: how to
think like Sherlock Holmes (available at a public
library near you). Konnikova identified Holmesian
thinking habits like:
• controlling bias, to sharpen our thinking
processes
• being selective in our observations and be
flexible in thinking
• finding objectivity, since we are prone to see
what we want to see
Curiously, such thinking habits resonate with
aspects of Information Literacy. For instance,
the “5-Finger Test” for evaluating information
sources which appears in NLB’s Information
literacy video, The Case of the Antique Chairs
(http://is.gd/Uwn3bE), included criteria such as the
accuracy, coverage and objectivity of information
received. Using these evaluation criteria, NLB’s very
own sleuth – Mr Sure Lok Hom – helps a young lady
to foil a scam by debunking a fake website cited
by a conman to con an elderly lady of her antique
furniture.

and learn how you can be SURE that the information
you receive is trustworthy!
