GIO
C FC
Gio is the puppy that got me back in the ring. His
Breeder (Sharon Debor) had two males available from
her litter by Jagger (Ch.Alfredrich Rolling Stonehill)
& Maddy (Ch. Shenandal Mad About You CD),
a Buster daughter bred to a Flasher son.
We knew their pedigree well &
became very interested.
Gio was originally to be placed in a obedience
home but because I was so drawn to him & his
pedigree, he joined us here at Alfredrich.
He shared the limelight for awhile with his grandad
“Buster”, (AmCan Ch.Alfredrich Bust A Move)
who passed a few months later at age 16.
Gio made us VERY proud early on as he won 5 points majors both here in Canada & the U.S.
He was winners dog at the Finger Lakes Dalmatian Specialty & finished last Spring with another 5 point
major win under Patty Strand & Cheryl Steinmetz at the Greater New York Specialty weekend.
Last April during the week of DCA, I decided to enter him as a Special in Canada since we were unable
to attend the DCA National. He won the Group both days and we decided to keep going!
Gio is now the Number TWO
Dalmatian in Canada with
10 Group firsts.
We couldn’t be happier about his
record. It has been a JOY to share
him with the fancy and we are
so happy knowing that Gio had
made somegreat friends
along the way this year!

A MOTHER and SON CONVERSATION...
MOM: Now, baby, after you run and play, I want you to make sure you drink PLENTY of WATER.
SON: OK, Mom, but WHY?
MOM: Well, we DALMATIANS ALL have a problem with digesting PROTEIN in it’s final stage and
this causes us to have CRYSTALS in our urine, which can lead to bladder stones.
SON: Oh, Mom, that sounds SCARY!
MOM: Well, it can be very serious, even DEADLY, but the GOOD NEWS is the humans have just
identified the specific GENE that causes this condition.
SON: Wow, that’s exciting! Now they can HELP us, right?
MOM: Perhaps, although I heard they had a vote or something and I’m not sure that they are
moving ahead with this VITAL RESEARCH.
SON: But why, Mom!?
MOM: Maybe it’s similar to when we’re afraid or unsure, we run away or freeze. I wonder if
that’s what HUMANS do too.
SON: What are they AFRAID of, Mom?
MOM: I don’t KNOW son, I really don’t know...

CANINE DNA COAT COLOR AND NOSE COLOR TEST
By: Linda L. Scheller-Bradley, D.V.M.
Laurel Dalmatians
lrldal@g-net.net
We are very fortunate to have at our disposal so many excellent tests which we can use in the planning of
our breeding programs. In addition to the health screening tests which many dalmatian breeders use
nowdays to reduce the incidence of hereditary diseases, we also have DNA testing for coat/nose color
available to us. By DNA coat color testing of the parents, breeders can more accurately predict the color of
future offspring. Sample collection for the tests is easy to do and the costs are very reasonable for the
information produced.
DNA coat/nose color testing can be done using samples from two sources: Cheek swabs or Blood Samples
(lavender tube-EDTA). There are several laboratories that have the capability to run these tests (VetGen,
Healthgene, DDC Veterinary, etc.). Testing can be done at any age. When collecting cheek swab samples,
it is important to follow certain instructions. Hands must be washed before taking the samples; to avoid
cross contamination between animals. Samples should be taken at least two hours after a meal. Water can be
given at any time and does not interfere with the collection process.
In Dalmatians, there are two loci associated with the gene which primarily affect coat color: the B locus
and the E locus. The B locus affects the presence of liver (also referred to as chocolate or brown). Black
spotted dalmatians have either BB or Bb as their genotype, since black is the dominent color. Liver spotted dalmatians are bb genotype, since liver is a recessive gene. The B locus is also responsible for the nose
leather color and pad color. The E locus determines the relationship of black (dominent) to yellow
(recessive). The genotype ee results in yellow phenotype. There can be a variety of shades of yellow
associated with this genotype. Dogs with genotype ee are lemon (or orange) spotted dalmatians and these
dogs can have nose/pad colors that are either black or liver.
Below are Genotypes along with their associated Coat Colors and Nose/pad Colors, as well as their
Hidden Colors.

Once a dog has been DNA tested for coat color and you know its genotype, you can make a table with the
genotypes of that dog and its prospective mate to predict the probabilities of what coat colors you may produce within that mating. An example of such a table can be viewed on VetGen’s website at the
following link:
