BILL GRAVES
As spring gives way to summer, I’m reminded
of the old baseball adage “Don’t look at the
standings until Memorial Day,” which reminds
fans not to take early results too seriously.
Well Memorial Day has just passed, and we just had an
opportunity to look at the standings – or at least take
stock of where our industry and association
are at our Leadership Meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Our meeting featured important policy discussions,
positive dialogue amongst our members and a
strong feeling that our industry and our association
are heading in the right direction.
That direction, I believe, is toward a more efficient
and safer industry that is better able to serve our
customers and the country.
We continue to feel good about how we’re working to
improve the image of our industry, and that is helping us
in Washington as we work to get pro-trucking, pro-safety policies enacted on hours-of-service, productivity and
any number of other issues.
So look at where we’ve been – at Leadership and
elsewhere in this issue of Inside ATA and the issue
of Transport Topics it is in – but also keep an eye
on the road to where we’re going: In the right
direction for a better industry for all of us.

D. Mike Pennington Award
for Outstanding Mentoring
To continue the legacy of Mike Pennington, the D. Mike
Pennington Award for Outstanding Mentoring has been
created in the Journalism program at the University
of Memphis. Pennington was an exemplary mentor
throughout his career and a consistent contributor to the
University of Memphis since his graduation in 1972.
The award will be given annually to a faculty member
who has been an outstanding mentor to a student or
students during their learning experience. A dear friend
and colleague, Mike passed away in December. He had
over 40 years in trucking, strongly supported ATA and the
trucking industry through his work at Meritor, in the media
and with the Allied Committee for the Trucking Industry
(ACT I). Mike was immediate past president of ACT I and
Vice Chairman of the ATA Communications & Image
Policy Committee as well as numerous other organizations.
If you would like to help continue Mike’s work, make
a tax deductible donation via the University’s secured
website at: www.memphis.edu/give. To donate online
to Mike’s Award, please select “I would like to give to
a fund not listed here” which then provides a line for
you to type the Mike Pennington Award.

to TMAF. The Tennessee Trucking
Association Foundation made a
$10,000 commitment to TMAF for
