It is through our discipleship that we recognize our connection to God, our neighbor, and our deepest spiritual selves. WE, seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ by: + Welcoming all with kindness, compassion and hospitality. + Nourishing the faith life of the community through prayer, fellowship and education. + Reverencing the dignity of each person by celebrating the beauty of life from conception to natural death. + Nurturing the gifts of all so that each person may live out his or her unique and personal call from God. + Caring for the needs of the less fortunate by empowering our parish community to answer that call. WE, do this in the name of Jesus Christ and the mandate: “See those Christians how they love one another!” SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 19, 2015 Saturday 8:30 am 4:00 pm 5:15 pm July 18 Joseph Arceri Guido Parisi Clementine Errante Tom Hayden James Farrell Neil Guerin Lisa Cardalena Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19 7:30 am Lasar/Hackett Family 9:00 am Rose/James Capozzi 10:30 am John McGinnis 11:45 am Dorothy Krudener Joseph Stahl Denise Hyland James Finlay Louise Rockmore 1:15 pm Parishioners of OLV 5:15 pm Noreen Clifford Monday July 20 St. Apollinaris 8:30 am William Tracy 12 noon Eileen Mungavin Tuesday July 21 St. Lawrence of Birndisi 8:30 am John Coughlin 12 noon Dolores Duttweiler Wednesday July 22 St. Mary Magdalene 8:30 am Richard Ferguson 12 noon Maureen Monteith Thursday St. Bridget 8:30 am 12 noon July 23 Cathy Simonetti Louis Marino Friday July 24 St. Sharbel Maklhluf 8:30 am Catherine Simonetti 12 noon Andrew Giuntini Saturday July 25 St. James, Apostle 8:30 am Dawn Sanford 4:00 pm Mary Quinn Kathleen Worth Margaret Fallon Marina Evers Martin Kerner, Jr. 5:15 pm Emanuel Capello Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 26 7:30 am Ralph Ratto 9:00 am Emma, Alyson & Katie Hance 10:30 am Patrick A. Tom Dear Parishioners, It’s great to be back after a wonderful vacation. Fourteen family members and I spent a week in the Tuscany region of Italy. We visited Florence’s Cathedral, Duomo and Baptistery; had pictures taken at the Leaning Tower of Pisa; toured the Banfi vineyards and winery; took a boat ride to view the Cinque Terre from the water; and visited Siena to honor St. Catherine and St. Bernadino. The Villa we stayed at had magnificent views and of course you can’t get a bad meal in Italy! I was very happy to have had this memorable vacation with my family! Mass with Fr. Alessandro da Luz Fr. Alessandro, who served at OLV this past year as a Deacon, will return here to celebrate Mass at 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 25th. After Mass Fr. Alessandro will be available to bestow First Blessings on anyone who would like to receive one. Please join us in congratulating Fr. Alessandro upon his Ordination to the Priesthood. He has been assigned to Our Holy Redeemer Parish in Freeport. Seminarian Chris Loester Seminarian Chris Loester will be completing his summer assignment at OLV this weekend. We appreciate his active involvement in all aspects of our parish life since he has been here. He will be returning to St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, NY to begin his second year of theology in September. Let us assure him of our prayers for him, and for the successful completion of his preparations for Priesthood! Summer Projects Boccia, Inc. has begun their work on the front façade and steps of the school building. The plan is for brick risers with bluestone steps. Boccia will also be replacing the Plainfield Ave. school steps. The front doors of the school and the stained glass window in the front of the school will be replaced. Progress continues to be made on the Parish Center. The pantry is operating and the parish clean-up day was very helpful. The floors will be refinished and we hope to have replacement windows installed in the early Fall. The hallway between the rectory and the church and the stairway down to the chapel is being renovated. Six new computers have been ordered for the rectory offices. The current computers are in definite need of upgrading. All of these improvements are made possible because of your tremendous generosity to OLV Parish. Thank you and I pledge to you that I will be a responsible steward of your donations. Fifth Friday Holy Hour The OLV Youth Ministry will be planning a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration whenever there is a fifth Friday in the month. They began in May and the experience was a very powerful and prayerful one thanks to the music ministry of Anthony Muhs and the reflection on “Why I Believe” given by Michael O’Grady, then a junior at Chaminade High School. The next Holy Hour is scheduled for Friday, July 31st. It will begin once again with a barbecue on the schoolyard at 6:30 pm. The Holy Hour will take place in church at 7:30 pm. Anthony Muhs will once again provide the music and the reflection on “Why I Believe” will be given by Floral Park Memorial senior, Therese Russell. By Aaron Matthew Weldon “Everything is connected.” This phrase echoes throughout the recent encyclical from the Holy Father, Laudato Si. . . . Pope Francis presents a comprehensive vision. Our attitude toward our common home is inseparable from our attitude toward the unborn, poor, and all who are vulnerable. The crises of our age have arisen because we refuse to receive created things in humility, simple joy, and awe at the work of God. 2016 Mass Intention Book The 2016 mass book will be available on Wednesday, August 5th. Please come by the Rectory office, during business hours 9am-7pm. The mass book will be available for the entire 2016 year. Mass stipend is $20 per mass. Thank you! Francis proposes an “integral ecology” – an approach to creation care rooted in the Christian conviction that the earth, and everything in it, is a gift from our gracious Father. Everything is connected, and so we must resist the temptation to see the problems that we face today as piecemeal. We can’t build a culture of life and trash the planet at the same time. We can’t clean up the mess left by a consumer society if we disregard the preciousness of human life. Care for creation flows naturally from our commitment to protect all human life. For example, polluted drinking water causes birth defects. We who march for life ought also to do our part to make sure that families have clean water for their children. In our different places in life, we can build up a human ecology by taking account of how our actions affect the lives of the most vulnerable. Most fundamental is our need to examine ourselves and how we receive God’s good world. We are immersed in a throwaway culture, which exerts its force on us. In our consumer society, we are prone to think of our surroundings, and even the people in them, as objects to help us fulfill our selfish desires. The habits formed in the throwaway culture need to be reformed and redirected. We must tend to our interior life and learn to receive created things as gifts, always remembering the unique dignity of each human being. Pope Francis reminds us that everything comes from God and can point to God. A fish or a grasshopper, a prairie or a canyon, each thing has its own loveliness and is to be admired as a creation of our Creator – not only for what benefit it brings us. When we can behold created things in their own particular glory, we move closer to an integral ecology. In the throwaway culture, land is only good as an energy resource. In a culture of life, it is seen as an integral ecosystem, pointing to a loving God who delights in making a world filled with diverse creatures and landscapes. The Pope offers simple suggestions for developing gratitude and reverence. He suggests that praying before and after meals might help inspire thankfulness for the food we receive. He notes the importance of resting on the Sabbath. In this spirit I offer a possible exercise. Choose some seemingly simple object, and consider the complexity and grandeur of it. Consider doing this with a different piece of creation each day. Let us take time to cultivate a spirit of gratitude and awe at the beauty of the earth, which reaches its pinnacle in that most marvelous of creatures, the human person. Such an attitude animates a culture of life.
