The Piecemakers’ Star DUFFERIN PIECEMAKERS QUILTING GUILD March 2009, Volume 15, Issue 7 Published by the: www.dufferinpiecemakers.org ***President’s Message *** I’ve been mulling a President’s Challenge for months now. I understand that we are in tough times, so here is my challenge: GO GREEN! Inside this issue: REDUCE: Create a miniature quilt, with a perimeter from 40” to 60”, using a minimum of four blocks. REUSE: One or more traditional/public domain block patterns, BUT put your personal spin on it, through the use of a new technique, border, setting, colour, etc. I will have a form for you to fill out to accompany your entry. RECYCLE: Draw from fabric in your stash, trade or borrow from a friend, BUT do NOT purchase any new material! Embellish your work with found things and/or quilt with an old pattern. Put on your thinking hats, pull out the old classics, and try to meet my challenge! The President’s Challenge is due at the June meeting. I’ll have lots of prizes and we will all participate in the selections. My hope is that the entries will then be donated to jump start our collection of minis for the Quilt Show in 2010. Library Procedures The Guild library has been created for the use of members of the Guild and operates on the honour system. Guild Library books may be borrowed for one month (from one meeting to the next meeting). Sign Out Procedures 1. Remove the sign out card from the pocket in the front of the book and record your name, telephone number the due date (which will be the next meeting –month and year only) 2. Give the card to the person at the library table. (If there is no card, please check with the person at the library desk and they will either locate the card or make a substitute.) The library staff will give you a due dates slip to insert into the pocket to remind you to return it the next month. 3. A maximum of 3 books may be signed out by one member. To return a book, you simply put the book in the return box and the library staff will handle the rest. If you forgot or need to keep the book longer than one month, there is no problem. However, if you have kept a book longer than 3 months, an overdue charge of 1 fat quarter will be charged for each overdue book. Community Projects Block The small finished quilts have now filled the extra large Community Project suitcase and the pile of large quilts continues to grow. Many thanks to all members who have been generously stitching blocks, completing tops and machine quilting or binding. At our last cutting and stitching session at Cobwebs and Caviar, we managed to finish another two tops and more blocks in spite of having a small group. All of your help is greatly appreciated and I know that our quilts are being used. Last week, one of our brightly coloured quilts was spotted wrapped around a tall lanky teenager who was wearing it instead of a coat as he travelled along Broadway Avenue in Orangeville. I guess Mary from Choices Youth Shelter was absolutely correct when she told me that there is an ongoing need for our quilts as they sometimes “walk away” and leave the shelter needing replacements for their beds. We will again have a stitching session before our meeting on March 16th beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Orangeville Fairgrounds. Bring your sewing machine and any other supplies and join us for an afternoon of completing blocks and tops and pinning tops, batting and backing ready for machine quilting. Spend the afternoon chatting, laughing and stitching and then join us for a delicious pot-luck supper. I think our supper last month was the best one yet. I always bring the potatoes (I think we finally have the large industrial gas oven mastered even without Betty!) and a salad or casserole is always appreciated. It‛s a wonderful opportunity to contribute to our community quilts and to get to know a few of our wonderful guild members a little better. We also will have another stitching session at Cobwebs and Caviar on Tuesday, March 24th beginning at 1:00 p.m. Our nominating committee is busy searching for guild members to volunteer for our community projects committee next year. We will need a chair (keep thinking about it Fern!) and some assistants. Please consider helping out. Fern, Norah, Penny and Shirley NEXT ISSUE DEADLINE: MONDAY, MAR. 30, 2009 Page 3 A huge thank you to all of my wonderful friends in Dufferin Piecemakers who have taken the time to surround me with love, support and prayers during the loss of my mother. Since we are coming to election time once again, I thought it might be appropriate to share it in our newsletter. JB DO YOU JUST BELONG Are you an active member the kind that would be missed? Or are you content to know your name is on the list? ~ Do you attend every meeting and mingle with the crowd? Or do you stay away then complain long and loud? ~ When you are asked to lend a hand do you say “yes” real quick? Or pass the chance to share the fun, then talk about the clique? ~ So many quilting projects are waiting to be done, and all can be accomplished with support from everyone. ~ Memberships are more than meetings, so help with hand and heart. Don‛t be another member but take an active part. ~~ Take a minute, think it over, it really won‛t take long … Are you an active member here or do you just belong? (Pat did win the 50/50 draw.) Thanks to Pat Kalapaca, Shirley Roberts and Leah Mitchell for providing the three different chili recipes which were combined to make the "Patchwork Chili". Despite the weather, the event was well attended and all 19 chili pot entries were quickly emptied. Thank you to Mary Light for the great Patchwork Chili sign. Submitted by Judi Jamieson The ConKerr Cancer program is all about helping children feel special and making life a little brighter for them while they battle life changing illnesses. It is a simple thing, just consider going through your stash, choose a colourful pattern for girls and boys ages 2 through 17 and make a pillowcase for these Special Children. Make the pillowcase from the directions provided at www.conkerrcancer.org Wash the pillowcase (for the protection of children in oncology) and place it in an individual quart size Ziploc bag. Bring to our Guild meetings and place them in the container provided. Judi Jamieson will collect them and deliver them to the drop off location at Brampton Sew N Serge on behalf of Dufferin Piecemakers Quilting Guild. They will then be donated to the children at the Hospital for Sick Children.
