The week of February 17 was a huge one for Nevada Union FFA. In celebration of National FFA Week, FFA members planned fun, interactive activities during lunch each
day. On Tuesday of FFA Week, students participated in a hay bucking contest. The job
to be done was to load eight bales of hay in the back of NU FFA’s white pickup truck.
After many teams, juniors Wyatt Price and Randy Schluter came out on top with a time
of 21 seconds! The next day was the Log Sawing competition. Each team of two had to
take one end of the saw and chop the end of the log off. This was the most challenging
contest of the week requiring students to keep the saw steady and straight to ensure success. Once again, Wyatt Price came out on top with teammate Chandler Phillips! On
Thursday, students took part in a Tug-O-War contest. Teams of four each took one side
of the rope attached to a tire in the middle. The goal of the game was to have the tire
cross over one’s line on each side. The champion team was Wyatt Price, TJ Hart, Timmy
Rubino, and Tyler Droivold! In addition, NU FFA put on a school-wide swing dance
Thursday afternoon in the dance room. Students had a blast learning the basics of swing
and line dancing. To wrap the end of the week, Nevada Union FFA put on the FIRST
EVER FFA Rally! With Maxie Holmberg-Douglas and Taylor Foster taking on the week
as their senior project, they took each event and the rally head-on with the help of the
FFA executive team and Pete, the schools’ activities director. The rally was a huge success with over 800 students in attendance and fun-filled games and dancing. To top off
the rally, hundreds of students joined the executive team to dance the Cotton Eyed Joe! It
was a successful and exciting week; the perfect way to celebrate FFA! Thanks to all of
the students that came out to participate!
ARBUCKLE FFA FIELD DAY

On February 1st 2014, the FFA advisors
took the Ag Mechanics, Forestry, and
Creed teams to Arbuckle High School for a
competition. Mr. Browning brought the Ag
Mechanics team which brought 2 teams
and had many different sections to their
competition. There was arc welding, oxyacyetaline cutting, surveying, problem solving, test/tool ID, electrical, and wood working. Chandler Phillips got 10th high individual,
Wyatt Price got 8th high individual, and Cody Butterfield got 2nd high individual. Team A of the 2
teams got 3rd high team and that team had
Chandler Phillips, Wyatt Price, Avery Landers,
and Cody Butterfield on it. Mrs. Alling brought
the Forestry team which had one high individual
which was Teija Hardesty with 7th high individual
award. Ms. Rowley brought the Creed team
which put up a great fight but didn’t quite make
the finals. All teams did an amazing job and it
was a great was to start of the CDE team’s competitive season!
Parliamentary Procedure

On February 8th, the novice and advanced Parliamentary Procedure teams went to Modesto
Junior College (MJC) for one of the season’s first contest. For the novice team, this was their
first contest. After only a month of practice with some of the newer members, they performed pretty well, almost making it to finals. There were three preliminary rounds, a test on
parliamentary procedure, and minutes taken on one of the rounds. With Mairi Jo Jones as
the chairman, and the following members (in order of chair) Jenna Melton, Avery Landers,
Kendal Brazil-Bloche, Dylan Cornish, and Alex Brose, the novice team had an education first
competition. The Advanced Team won first high team with Taylor Foster as High Chairman,
Ellen Van Noy as High Chair 3 and Maxie Holmberg as High Chair 4.
The following week on February 14th, the Parliamentary Procedure teams went north to the Chico State University Farm
for another contest. Here, the novice team excelled. Starting
with the test, and then two preliminary rounds, the team already had a good start. They made it to the semi-finals with a
good round progressing them to finals. In the final round, the
novice team had an excellent performance. With great rounds
all day, added with their test and minutes scores, the novice
team placed 2nd, with Mairi Jo Jones receiving the high chairman award. The Advanced Team also won 1st High Team at
this contest, with Bailey Bivens as High Chair 1.
