DNR Certificate Recognizes First Deer New 2014 Jeep Cherokee!
by Jerry Davis
BARNEVESLD - Lucas Evans, of Barneveld, had
tried twice before to take a deer. He had tried with
a rifle, and missed. But he was determined, after
killing a turkey last spring that he would eventually
kill a deer.
Unlike some hunters who quickly become trophy-only hunters, Lucas was content to start with
whatever came his way.
On Sept. 15, the second day of Wisconsin’s
2013 archery season, his persistence paid off. On
top of that, some might say he did it the hard way,
with a bow and arrow.
“I was hunting with my friend, Michael Zouski, on his friend’s farm near Ridgeway,” Lucas said.
“The deer came in under my stand, and then it ran
away. Then it came back but was running around,
so I blew my deer call and he stopped and I could
get a clear shot with my bow.”
It was raining that morning, so the young
hunters from Barneveld waited and with some
help that afternoon from an adult they quickly
found the deer even though most of the blood trial
had washed away.
Every first deer is special and every hunting
scenario is a bit different. Similarly, every deer is
special for most hunters, regardless of how many
times they’ve taken a deer.]
This year the Department of Natural Resources
is making a free certificate available to successful
hunters, of any age, as they join the ranks of becoming a happier hunter for the first time.
Here’s how a hunter gets a first deer certificate.
The hunter, his or her parents, or a friend, can go
to the DNR’s Web page and search under first deer
certificate.
The DNR asks that the person type in the hunter’s
name; an email address; the day, month and year
of kill; the method used to take the deer; the county and general location where the hunt took place;

The deer sprinted in, ran away, then came
back. I stopped it by blowing on my call.
That allowed me to make a clean shot.
who the person was hunting with; and a few notes
about the hunt.
I thought I would surprise Lucas with his
first deer certificate, so I asked his grandfather, LeRoy “Bud” Evans, for the general information and
then I asked Lucas to email me an image taken in
the field, if he had one. I put it all together on the
computer form, along with Lucas’s image, emailed
it to the DNR, and in less than a day an email came
back to me with the finished certificate.
I ran off several copies on my printer, even
used some photo paper (but any paper will suffice)
and gave the copies to Bud Evans, who proudly
presented them to his grandson, Lucas.
Asking for the information is not to the specific location of the hunt. Lucas, for example, was
hunting on a friend’s farm and he described in two
sentences the moments before and during the time
he shot the deer with his bow.
It is likely that a young hunter, even an older
hunter, would have an image of the hunt, but if they
don’t, the DNR will provide a photograph taken of
a live Wisconsin deer to add to the certificate.\
Kevin Wallenfang, DNR big game ecologist,
said while this certificate only applies to deer this
year, the DNR may expand the recognition to first
turkey and first bear in the future.

NATURALLY SPEAKING
By Jerry Davis
Bird enthusiasts who engage in filling feeders frequently agonize
about whether they are doing the right thing, particularly when it
comes to providing sugar water for ruby-throated hummingbirds.
They may even imagine looking out a window on a cold autumn
day only to see the feeder water frozen and a similarly stiff hummingbird stuck to the perch peg. Not to worry. These birds know
more about migration than we ever will. After all, they often make
an arduous, nonstop flight across the Gulf of Mexico, using stored
fat reserves for energy. Another common autumn question is,
Where have the males gone? The males and females usually migrate separately, males leaving before the females. So if only females
are seen by a feeder in late September, that’s a clue that the males
have already migrated and the females are about to follow. Males
usually return each spring before the females. When they do return, sapsucker holes leaking tree sap, as well as insects, provide
plenty food until flowers bloom and feeders are filled.

GARDENING TIP:
Preserving flowers dates back to earliest
recorded history. The bones of a pre-historic man discovered in the Middle East,
was found covered with a mantle of delicate wildflowers. Drying flowers is a
wonderful way to capture some summer
sunshine and can be as simple as hanging a few stems or as labor-intensive as
pressing daisy blossoms. And almost any
flower can be dried successfully, once you
figure out the correct drying procedure.
Some flowers do work better than others.
Here are a few of rules of thumb:
• Flowers with high water content, like sedum, don’t air dry well.
• Always cut more flowers than you will
need, because you will probably lose
some in the drying process.
• The best time to harvest your flowers
is late morning, just after thes dew has
evaporated from the leaves.
• Most flowers dry best when cut slightly
immature, with the bud not fully open,
since the flower will continue to open
once cut.
The easiest way to preserve flowers
and seedpods is air-drying. This natural
process doesn’t take up a lot of space. And
with minimal effort, the results can be
very rewarding. You can grow your own
flowers or buy them at the farmer’s market. Select a location that is dark, warm,
dry, and has really excellent ventilation.
Attics and garages are great choices. Keep
flowers out of sunlight so their color
doesn’t fade.
Tie stems tightly together and hang
upside down in loose bunches to dry.
We use wire hangers and rubber bands.
This method works really well for plants
like lavender, hydrangea, and ornamental
thistles. But not all flowers stay natural
looking when dried upside down. Some
will curl up as they hang, so a better method is to insert the stems through a mesh
screen that will support the flower heads
while letting the stems hang straight. This
gives them a more natural position as
they dry. Try experimenting with different racks and hooks to hold flower heads
and stems where you want them.
There lots of ways to use your dried
flowers. Dried seed heads from coneflowers and milkweed pods look great in fall
wreaths. Dried allium flower-heads are a
beautiful change from curly willow and
dogwood branches in your winter containers. The possibilities are endless.

Eagles Battle Down at Black Hawk
By: Kaitlyn Walker
On September 19, 2013 the volleyball team
travelled down to Black Hawk. The ladies came out
slow and sluggish and lost the first game. The Eagles
came into the next game still struggling, losing it as
well. This put the Eagles down 0-2 to the Warriors.
The Eagles never gave up, fought hard to win the next
two games. This put the Eagles and the Warriors at
2-2. Coming into the last game the Eagles worked as
hard as they could, but fell short losing in five to the
Warriors. Danielle Straubhaar led the team in assists
with 19 and in aces with 7. Taylor Owens and Kristen
Udelhofen lead the team in digs with 14 apiece. Mia
Whitish led the team in blocks with 3 and Samantha
Evans led the team in kills with 10. Good luck to the
Eagles in the rest of their conference play.
Eagles at Seneca
By Danielle Straubhaar
Edited by Corissa Lease
Two weekends ago the Barneveld Eagles
traveled to Seneca for a four game tournament.
The first game the Eagles played Boscobel and won
27-25 and 25-11. The second game vs. Desoto they
won 25-20 and 25-13. The third game they played
Shullsburg and won 25-10 and 25-21. The last game
the Eagles lost to Seneca 25-27 and 25-13. Danielle
Straubhaar led the team in assists with 53 throughout the tournament. Cayla Carden had 3 aces, 6
digs, and 2 blocks. Samantha Evans had 7 aces and
1 block. Taylor Owens had 5 aces and 7 digs. Kristen
Udelhofen had 8 digs, Jenna Wright had 7 digs, and
Mia had 5 blocks. Even though the team was missing Rachel Slaney, they came out strong and worked
together. Seniors Samantha Evans and Cayla Carden
said, “Being able to go to Seneca for a tournament
was a big help for our team chemistry, especially
since Rachel Slaney was out with an ankle injury. We
took Mia Whitish under our wing and made her a
part of our team.”

Barneveld/Wisconsin Heights traveled to
Marshall on September 24th. The girls’ team tied
for fourth place with Marshall, both ending with
91 points. Barneveld’s senior, Jana Hummel, came
in 32nd place with a time of 23:45. Erin Frame, Wisconsin Height’s senior, came in 4th place with a time
of 16:37. Wisconsin Height’s sophomore, Korl Bomkamp, came in 5th place with a time of 16:38. The
boys’ team did really well and placed first in the
meet. Wisconsin Height’s senior, Billy Boutelle,
placed 1st with a time of 16:46. Another one of Wisconsin Height’s seniors, Kody Fisher, placed 6th with a
time of 17:25. Good luck to the Cross Country team’s
next meet at Reedsburg.
Eagles Crush the Comets
By Danielle Straubhaar
The Barneveld volleyball team traveled
to Albany on Tuesday for another conference
win. The Eagles beat the Comets 25-21, 25-11,
and 25-14. Danielle Straubhaar led the team in
aces with 9, most points with 20, and most assists with 25. Kristen Udelhofen had the most
digs with 4. Samantha Evans and Sara Cannoy
both had 1 block each. Samantha Evans also led
in kills with 13. It was a good win for the Eagles to
get ready for their next conference game. Senior
Kendra Bahr said, “It was really nice to see everyone working together and see everyone able to
play.” Coach Brenda James said, “I’m seeing so
many of the varsity team members improve. We
are halfway through the season and more improvements to come before tournaments.” Good
luck to the girls in their next conference game.
Upsetting Lost
By: Kendra Bahr
The Wisconsin Heights soccer team played
hard, but lost 5-0 to New Glarus Belleville. Although
distraught, they played their hardest. “Not our best
game” says sophomore, Bennett Applegate. Another one of Barneveld’s freshman says “although we
came out to play, we didn’t do as well as we plan
and all we can do is look forward to the next game to
redeem ourselves.” Good luck to the soccer team as
they travel to Lodi.
Perfect Homecoming Win
By Hailey Kleppe
Last Friday, September 20th the Mt. Horeb/Barneveld
Vikings took on the Sauk Prairie Eagles in a conference match up. The atmosphere was filled with excitement from returning alumni and homecoming
fans. It was a great ending to a long homecoming
week and the Vikings came out with a 42 – 20 win.
“The first half was a little rough but the second half
we came out stronger and finished” says Barneveld
senior, Sam Moyer. Good luck to the Vikings as they
travel to Baraboo this Friday to take on the Thunderbirds.
Tyler Hellenbrand
Eagle-Vanguards Run at Viking Invitational
By: Cayla Carden
By: Jana Hummel
Throughout his four years at Barneveld, Tyler Hellenbrand has been known for making people
laugh, his personality, and his athletic ability. He
has excelled as a three-sport athlete, contributing
in Football, Basketball, and Baseball all four years.
Math is his favorite subject, even though it is not
taught by his favorite teacher, Mr. Draper. When
asked about his favorite memory, he didn’t know
what to say. Going up and staying in a hotel for the
weekend to cheer on the girls when they went to
state for basketball came to his mind after thinking.
Although he has chosen to pursue a career in Actuarial Science, Tyler is unsure about what college
he would like to attend. Tyler’s sarcasm, personality,
and smile will be missed, but we wish the best of
luck to him.

On Saturday September 21, the Wisconsin
Heights-Barneveld cross country team ran at the
Mount Horeb Viking Invitational. The girls’ varsity
team scored and placed fifth, and the boys’ varsity team placed third. Korl Bomkamp ran well with
a time of 17:29 and won the fastest sophomore
award. Billy Boutelle placed third individually with a
time of 17:33 and Colton Straubaar ran well with a
time of 21:34. Good luck to the cross country team
at their Conference Meet at Marshall on Tuesday!
Team Leahy and The Barneveld Girls’ Basketball Team would like to say “Thank-you” to
all that supported our “Golfing Fore More Than A Cure” golf outing on Saturday, September 7th. This event raised over $6900 with all proceeds going to the “More Than A
Game” cancer awareness event that over the past 5 years has helped over 30 local families and has supported cancer research. Our next “More Than A Game” event will be
held on January 11th, 2014, when the Barneveld Girls’ Basketball team hosts Prairie du
Chien. (1:00pm and 2:30pm game times).

Leading Reading Taskforce 1st meeting report
Good day to all of you reading this!
Over the last week and a half, our staff
and many community supporters have been busy
in the beginning phases of a study about our
reading program. We held a meeting with the
staff and a follow-up with about 16 members of
the community to discuss and form a consensus
about the purpose for teaching reading especially at the elementary level in schools.
Both conversations were very enjoyable
and the feedback has been very positive. The
reading process can be a bit complicated, so we
were working to help folks understanding the
ways that reading should be taught and what
types of reading should be done. Below is a summary of what we discussed.
Reading Fluency. This is the ability to
recognize words easily and read quickly through
them. We discussed how this is done from associating oral language with printed symbols and
progressing through academic and content specific vocabulary. We read a few models of how
the brain is able to decode difficult phrases because of our fluency and understanding of the
structure of language. Below is an example that
was presented. You may have experience with
other examples as they have been around the internet for quite some time:
“Your Brain is a code-cracking machine.
For emaxlpe, it deson’t mttaer in waht oredr the
ltteers in a wrod aepapr, the olny iprmoatnt tihng
is taht the frist and lsat ltteer are in the rghit
pcale. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can
sitll raed it wouthit pobelrm.”
Reading for understanding/information.
Once we have the rules and can quickly read basic material, we move from “learning to read”
to “reading to learn.” This is a process that is
constantly reinforced. We teach strategies such
as predictions and using text clues to develop
meaning. Examples of this include road signs,
reading the sports page for scores and highlights
as well as textbooks.
Reading for pleasure. This is the reading that we do of our own free will because of
the satisfaction it gives us. It is also the reading
that, having begun at someone else’s request, we
continue because we are interested. Have you
ever been discussing something with someone
who says, I read about that, you should read it…
When you do, you tend to be very interested.
This is pleasure reading. Our discussion around
pleasure reading had to do with whether this had
a place in school curriculum. We took a look at
research that supports the practice and agreed
that it did.
All of these types of Reading instruction
were universally agreed as the reasons that we
teach reading at Barneveld. In the future, we
will take a look at what our achievement data
and the Common Core State Standards say about
reading and how we are doing. Our next meeting
is October 9 from 5:30-7:30. This is also the date
of Parent/Teacher Conferences. We will work on
a format that will allow you to drop in for a bit of
time to join the discussion and then leave when
you need to for conferences.
For more information about our work, please do
not hesitate to call or email (bjones@barneveld.

Looking Forward!

NOTICE TO THE VILLAGE OF BARNEVELD
RESIDENTS:
The Barneveld Water Utility will clean and flush water
mains the week of October 14th – October 18th, 2013.
Flushing will be conducted between the hours of 8:00
a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Discolored water could be drawn into homes during
flushing or immediately after. Discoloration results after minerals have been dislodged from the walls of water
mains. It is not harmful to drink the discolored water, but
it could cause laundry stains. To clear discolored water,
open cold water taps to full flow for a short period after
flushing crews have left the area.
