Kelly Mitchell a native of Mineral Point, is a singer/songwriter whose sound has been described as an eclectic mix
of piano driven vintage pop and alternative folk with hints of acoustic soul and blues. Her debut album, “Smile,” are
11 original songs that Kelly wrote during a four year period. Now based in Minneapolis, Kelly grew up listening to
her father harmonize to Eric Clapton classics, and Perry Como’s “Catch a Falling Star” is her first musical memory.
The oldest of three girls and the only alto, she and her sisters began singing folk favorites with their father at local
sporting events and fundraisers. This is her 1st Spectacular.
‘
Emily Wicker returns this year for her 3rd performance in Spectacular Spectacular. A graduate of Barneveld High,
Emily received her Master’s Degree in Opera Performance from the University of Iowa and is currently singing with
the One Ounce Opera Company in Austin, Texas. Emily has performed leading opera roles and oratorio solos at the
University of Iowa, Minnesota Opera Company and performed scenes from Don Giovanni while in Montepulciano,
Italy. Emily and her husband, Ted, currently reside in San Antonio, Texas where Ted serves in the United States Air
Force.
Alyssia Kittleson grew up in the small town of Blanchardville and has been a student of music her entire life, learning to sing and play instruments, from flute, piccolo to some piano. Despite her main passion being rock and roll, she
is continually looking to expand her horizons by studying new genres, sounds, and techniques. Currently, Alyssia
is completing a degree in Criminal Justice but regularly takes time to perform with her father’s band at various functions across the nation as well as record the vocals for many of her original compositions. This is the 3rd appearance
at the Barneveld Christmas Spectacular

NATURALLY SPEAKING
By Jerry Davis
Selecting the perfect Christmas tree is rarely easy. Slow
growing trees often produce the best branch spacing to fill in all the
holes without leaving a foot-tall spike at the top. Even with pruning, it is difficult to assist an evergreen into growing as we would
like. If only Christmas trees were oaks, elms or aspens, things
would be much easier to get the forms we want. These deciduous
trees grow new leaders with little difficulty, regardless of how much
pruning they receive. If we brought a deciduous tree indoors, we’d
never have any needles on the floor, but neither would there be any
leaves on the tree, just bare branches. Evergreens commonly have
unsightly seed cones on their branches during December. Some
of these cones continue to shed seeds as they dry indoors. So we
do the best we can with the famous evergreens, the cedars, firs,
spruces and pines. At least the resin, which commonly drips onto
the floor or carpet, gives the indoors a fresh scent.

Graf Places In Photo Contest
With Shots Of Local Rural Healthcare
[Dodgeville] Photos taken by Tami Graf of
Dodgeville, have earned recognition in a
photo contest organized by the Wisconsin
Office of Rural Health (WORH). Graf ’s photo of a rural clinic sign earned a Gold Prize,
taking first place in the healthcare facility category and two other photos received honorable mention.
Graf (pictured left) graduated from Madison Area Technical College in May of this
year, with a degree in Visual Communications. Working to build a strong portfolio,
Graf offered her talent as a volunteer photographer for Upland Hills Health and has
helped to visually record several of the organization’s events.
Earlier this fall when the photo contest
was announced, Graf teamed up with Upland Hills Health Director of Acute Care Services, Tammy Rule to capture the essence of
healthcare in Iowa County. The two worked
feverishly one morning, producing hundreds
of photos and Graf submitted fifteen to the
contest.
Their hard work paid off when three of the
images made it to the top 16 in the contest.
Graf ’s photo of the Upland Hills Health
Montfort Clinic Sign with farm silos in the
background, earned the highest recognition
in its category receiving the Gold Prize - First
Place in Healthcare Facility Category, and
her photo of the Compassion Way street sign
earned honorable mention.
Graf ’s photo of

Brendan Beno, a senior at Barneveld High, will be
missed. Brendan hasn’t decided what college to
go to yet or major, but has many options. His favorite teacher throughout high school was Mr.
Draper, since he always enjoyed every history class
with him and always learning more. Even though
he loved history his favorite subject was science.
He always loved doing labs and being hands on
learning. Brendan was involved in boyscouts, golf,
and band. His favorite memory was working on
the float each year with all of his friends. Brendan is going to miss being able to see his friends,
Jacob, Colton S., Tristan, and Bailey every day and
having class with them. Brendan will be missed
and hopefully will be able to come back and visit.
The Barneveld School Shop will be open to the
public Wednesday nights November 6th thru December 18th from 5pm until 9pm. Open shop includes not only wood working but metal working,
CNC equipment, Laser Engraver etc. Come in and
create/build your Christmas gifts this year yourself. Questions call Duane Elfering 924-4711 x231
Congrats to Mr Draper, Ms. Bosch, Mr. Walker
and the entire Drama Team for your sectional
appearance and the community shows that
were performed last weekend.

Lucky Luke Evans Is Hooked On Hunting
by Jerry Davis
Deer hunters are advised to be patient
and to stay in their stands until the season
closes at day’s end.
But anything can, and often does,
happen during an annual deer rut in early
November. Bucks tend to throw caution to
the wind, even disregarding people, buildings and vehicles.
Lucas Evans, 15, didn’t follow typical
hunters’ advice while bow hunting recently. And he admits he didn’t really have a
plan, either. But remember, this is during
the rutting season and almost anything can
happen, even to a 15-year-old hunter who
has never seen a buck when he’s been deer
hunting.
Luke, a freshman at Barneveld High
School, was hunting with his friend, Alex
Schaffer, a high school graduate from
Mount Horeb. The two were deer hunting
on a Dane County farm earlier this month.
Luke and Alex were in separate tree
stands and Alex had forgotten his cell phone
so the two were unable to communicate
electronically. Had Alex remembered to
bring his phone, he might have sent Luke a
text alerting him that there was a large buck
coming into his area.
About this time Luke decided to get
down from his stand and inspect a nearby
field. Why? He didn’t know. What was
his plan after he has surveyed the field? He
didn’t know.
“I had no plan,” Luke said.
Sometimes impatience does work. Being in the right place at the right time helps,
too.
Just as Luke got down from his stand
and walked out near a mowed path, he saw
a large buck walking quickly toward him.
“There he was, right in my face, with
his head to the ground. When I pulled up
and shot him he was five yards away,” Luke
said.
The deer ran about 100 yards before
dropping. Luke hiked over to Alex’s stand
and told him what had just happened and
the two went back to the farm house, got
some help and the rest is history, or as
young boys might text, the rest is on FaceBook and other social media.
Luke’s deer, an 11-point buck, will become more family venison and a wall mount
to hang someplace in the Evans’ house.
Meanwhile jokes about changing
Luke’s name to Lucky Evans or Lucky Luke
are being plastered around school, along
with Luke smiling about his newly discovered activity—deer hunting.
