NATURALLY SPEAKING
By Jerry Davis
This is the time deer
hunters, photographers and
watchers wait for all year.
Male deer—antlered bucks-seem to be constantly on
the move, day and night,
and pretty much throw caution of humans to the wind.
Look closely and you’ll see large necks on these
bucks. This is partly a reaction to increased levels of
testosterone in their blood. It’s also caused less so by
bucks rubbing against trees and fighting with other
deer.
Even for anyone not interested in deer is impacted by this mating season. Bucks damage trees and
shrubs anywhere they can find the right size; in forests,
fence rows, yards, and orchards.
This is also the time when deer/vehicle collisions
are high. Some of the bigger deer can do considerable
damage to a car or light truck. Often times the deer
is killed, and occupants in these vehicles can be hurt,
even killed, too.

The first playoff game against McFarland
started with a bang when the Vikings scored a
quick 24 points in the first quarter off of two
long pass play and a long run. The Spartans
tried to recover from the quick blow but could
only manage to kick a field goal. In the second
quarter, the Vikings offense was just as effective putting up two rushing touchdowns and
one more passing touchdown before half. The
Spartans still couldn’t get any of their own offense going, leaving the score at half Mount
Horeb/Barneveld- 45, McFarland- 3. In the second half the starters were done and the MHB
JV got a chance to play. They did well only letting the Spartans score once in the third quarter, but came back to score one of their own.
The score at the end of the fourth quarter was
Mount Horeb/Barneveld- 52, McFarland-10.

On Saturday October 25th, the Barneveld
Theatre group headed up to Reedsburg to perform in the WHSFA District 10 Festival in hopes
to move on to the next round. Each and every
one of them did extraordinary whether it was
performing on stage, working with props, or
sound and lights. Aiming for 2 advances out
of the 3 judges (to be able to continue onto
the next level), the drama students and directors were overjoyed with the news of all three
judges advancing us onto the next level. When
asked about the performance, Mr. Draper
(one of the directors) said, “The cast and crew
did an excellent job performing at the District
10 festival. We received many positive comments about our performance from the judging panel and also gained some helpful tips to
improve our performance. Everyone is looking
forward to performing the play for our friends
and family in Barneveld.” Good Luck in the future performances and keep up the good work!
Eagles Fight Hard To Beat Potosi Chieftains
By: Carly Kolze
Edited By: Samantha Schult
On Thursday, October 23rd, the Barneveld
Eagles Volleyball team traveled to Potosi in their
second regional game. The girls had so much energy and intensity, and they never gave up as they
went into five games. The scores of the games
were close and they never stopped fighting. The
first match the girls won 25-11; lost the second
16-25; won the third 25-18; lost the fourth 2325; and lost the fifth 15-17. The girls played hard,
but they came up short in the fifth game. Senior
Rachel Slaney led the team in kills with 32 and
following Rachel was Junior Taylor Owens with
11. Not only did Rachel lead the team in kills,
but she also led the team in blocks with six. Junior Jenna Wright played an awesome game and
led the team in digs with 15 and aces with four.
Following Jenna with 14 digs was Rachel. Junior
Kelsee Fargo led the team in assists with 30 and
right behind her is Junior Sarah Cannoy with 15.
Great job to the Barneveld girls volleyball team!

Alana Hendrickson’s favorite memory of
high school was the lock-ins for band sophomore
year when Aaron Cooley was still the band director and the lock-in right before the state games in
Green Bay. Her favorite teacher throughout high
school is Ms. Bosch. She says, “I have enjoyed
all of the classes I have had with her in my four
years of high school, especially Women’s Literature which is one of my favorite classes this year.
I know that if I need help with something I can
trust her to be someone I can talk to when I need
it. I also know that with her teaching and grading, she’s trying to make us better with English
skills and prepare us the best she can to be ready
for college.” What does the future hold in store
for Alana? Well she’s going to go to college in
the fall when she graduates from Barneveld High
school. She plans to attend UW-River Falls for
their Equine Program or go to UW-Platteville for
their great Forensic Science Program. The best
of luck to Alana in her journey and we all hope
that she goes and accomplishes great things.

IOWA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT, EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT AND UPLAND HILLS HEALTH,
WORKING TOGETHER ON JOINT EBOLA PLANNING
Dodgeville— Iowa County Health Department, Iowa County
Emergency Management and Upland
Hills Health, in collaboration with
the Wisconsin Department of Health
Services (DHS), are preparing in the
event the Ebola virus is diagnosed
here.
“At this time, there are no reported cases of Ebola in Wisconsin, and
the risk of contracting it remains
extremely low,” said Jenny Pritchett,
Iowa County Health Officer. “Preparing and collaborating on the federal,
state, and local level will ensure that
the public and health care providers
receive prompt public health information.”
“People are naturally concerned
about the Ebola virus, especially with
the cases recently diagnosed in the
United States,” adds Jenny Pritchett,
Iowa County Health Officer. “While
we work together to prepare, it’s also
important to reassure the public
that Ebola can only be transmitted
through contact with the body fluids
of people who are sick with the virus,
or who have died from it. Ebola cannot be transmitted through the air.”
Health care workers and first responders are keenly aware that they
must be especially vigilant with following rigorous safety practices in the
event they are ever called on to assist
or care for an Ebola patient.
“Our hospital, first responders and
EMS providers take preparedness
very seriously,” said Brian Cushman,
Upland Hills Health Emergency
Management Specialist. “We are following current safety practices for
putting on and taking off personal
protective equipment. We will continue to review and update our plans for
transporting and isolating a patient
with Ebola, and we continue to practice the best methods of sanitation,
including the disposal of waste.”
“We want to stress that there are
no reported cases of Ebola in Wisconsin, and the risk of contracting it
remains extremely low in Wisconsin,”
said Karen McKeown, State Health
Officer. “DHS remains vigilant in its
monitoring of the Ebola virus, and
will continue to provide our partners
and the public with the most current
information and guidance concerning this disease.”
For more information about the
Ebola virus and Wisconsin’s preparedness efforts, visit: http://www.
dhs.wisconsin.gov/communicable/

State Of Wisconsin Coordinates With Health Systems To
Provide Care In The Event Of A Confirmed Ebola Diagnosis
We have your back.
Three health systems designated to ensure safety and appropriate
treatment
MADISON—The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) today
announced that it is collaborating with
three Wisconsin health systems to care
for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Ebola. Even though Ebola has
not been diagnosed in Wisconsin and
the risk of contracting it remains very
low, if a case of Ebola is confirmed,
DHS will work with the medical team
caring for the patient to transfer them
to one of the following designated hospitals:
• UW Health – University of
Wisconsin Hospital, Madison,
and the American Family Children's Hospital, Madison (for pediatric patients only)
• Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin – Froedtert
Hospital, Milwaukee
• Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee (for pediatric
patients only)
"This is an important piece of
the state's overall coordinated strategy
of Ebola preparedness. All health systems are continuing to prepare to identify, isolate, and provide initial care for
any patients with Ebola. Because of the
specialized care available at the designated hospitals, and because of their
demonstrated preparedness, these designated health systems have agreed to
be centers of excellence and will safely
provide treatment for confirmed cases," said Karen McKeown, State Health
Officer. "We asked these organizations
to volunteer because we feel they have
plans in place that will increase the
odds of recovery for patients diagnosed with the disease. These systems
are prepared to safely treat these patients and prevent the spread of Ebola.
We expect that additional systems may
join this group."
Ebola has not been diagnosed
in Wisconsin and the risk of Ebola remains very low. People can only get
Ebola by direct contact with the body
fluids of someone who has the disease
and is showing symptoms of being ill.
In the event that Ebola is diagnosed
in Wisconsin, DHS will work with
the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) to notify the public. The health systems that have volunteered to care for confirmed Ebola
patients are able to safely do so without
interrupting their normal patient care
activities.
Individuals who are concerned about their own health risk
should call their usual health care provider or call 1-844-684-1064, 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. There is also information posted on the DHS website
at www.dhs.wisconsin.gov. Patients
will be transferred to designated hospitals only after approval from DHS.
"Although we know the likelihood of an Ebola patient in Wisconsin
remains low, we're confident that the
policies and training put into place at
UW/ Health over the last few weeks
will ensure the best care possible if a
patient does present, while maintaining a safe environment for our providers and patients," said Dr. Jonathan
Jaffery, Chief Population Health Officer at UW Health. "While we hope to
never have to implement these policies, we continue to train and prepare
on a daily basis."
"We are grateful to the DHS
for organizing a coordinated, thoughtful response plan that involves the capabilities of several excellent Wisconsin hospitals. As an academic medical
center, Froedtert & the Medical Col-
lege of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital, has expertise in treating complex
conditions and illnesses, and we are
trained and prepared to safely care
for all of our patients," said Sid Singh,
MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer
at Froedtert Hospital.
"Children's Hospital of Wisconsin has already prepared a comprehensive plan, including screening,
training, treatment, isolation and protection, in order to safely handle the
possibility, however unlikely, of a child
being diagnosed with the Ebola virus.
As the state's only independent health
system dedicated solely to the care of
kids, we appreciate the opportunity to
coordinate with the State of Wisconsin, local health departments and other health care systems to ensure that all
kids who visit Children's Hospital receive the best and safest care." Michael
Gutzeit, M.D., Chief Medical Officer,
Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
"Wisconsin's hospitals care for all
those in need, and WHA commends
the care givers and leaders of Froedtert Health, UW Hospitals and Clinics
and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin;
three exemplary Wisconsin health systems stepping forward to take on this
critical role," said Wisconsin Hospital
Association President Steve Brenton.
"WHA and our members are committed to working with state leaders to assure the safety of our care givers, that
high quality care is available to those
in need, and Wisconsin is prepared to
meet whatever challenge may arise."

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES ARE
USUALLY CONSISTENT
AND AGGRESSIVE ADVERTISERS
A common excuse from small business owners is “The BIG
businesses can afford to advertise, but we’re just a small
company. Sure, some of these big businesses started out
with large investment capital, but consider this perspective—Perhaps they were small, gained momentum, and
continued to grow because they understood the importance
of and utilized their advertising. They out-advertised their
competition in order to gain their position, and then have
continued to advertise to maintain that position.

First Deer Certificates Available Again “is it worth it to
by Jerry Davis
Hunters who kill their first
deer during any season and with
any implement, gun or bow, may request a first deer certificate from the
Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources.
The process is entirely handled by email unless the user does
not have an email address, in which
case other arrangements may be
made by contacting the DNR deer
program.
A friend can handle the process
and have the certificate emailed to
his or her address, too. The user can
then print the certificate on any type
of paper or on photograph quality
paper.
Last year about 1,000 hunters
requested a certificate for their first
deer. The program has been expanded to include turkeys, too, with
about the same amount of interest
as with the deer program.
This certificate is one way hunters, of any age, can commemorate
their deer hunting experience. Of
course any deer qualifies the hunter.
If a photograph is included, it
must be in good taste; otherwise a
stock photograph will be substituted
by the DNR. Photographs should
not show any alcohol containers,
inappropriate gun/bow handling, or
disrespect for the animal.
When writing a note about the
hunt, all language should be appropriate or the submission will not be
fulfilled.
General information requested,
which will appear on the certificate,
include hunter’s name, date of kill,
method of hunting such as gun or
bow, county where hunt occurred,
companions involved in the hunt,
general location such as uncle’s farm
and a few notes about the hunt.
The digital photograph must be
uploaded from the hunter’s computer at the same time the information
for the certificate is provided.
Return time of the certificate is usually very short, but may
be longer during the nine-day gun
deer season.
There is no deadline for submitting a request and the certificate
is available to hunters of any age.
The form is found on the DNR
Web page, www.dnr.wi.gov. Search
first deer certificate, answer to questions on the form, and attach a photograph. The entire process is free
and there is no charge for the certificate.
advertise in your
local newspaper?”
For many small businesses that sell to
consumers,
yes it is — provided you
think of your local newspaper as not
being the major-metro newspaper but
the local community or suburban newspaper, where the audience is targeted,
the ad rates lower, and the staff motivated to place your marketing message
with more of a personal touch.
