A Message From The President
My life is about to get a little busier! I am off in
August for a free all expense trip to Reno NV, with
only one little problem, it is for my other volunteer
job. Some of you may know I volunteer with Score,
formerly known as the Service Corps of Retired
Executives. It is a non-profit resource for the SBA
by providing free mentoring and education
programs for entrepreneurs and small business
owners. I have belonged to the Nashville chapter
(www.scorenashville.org) for 3 years and starting
October 1 will be the new Chair, aka President, for
the next two years. For that privilege, I get the allexpense trip to Reno for a week to attend the
National Score Leadership Conference. If you
might be interested in joining Score as a counselor,
let me know and we have about 40 volunteers
locally, most of which are retired, but not all.
members plan to attend this event hosted by
Porsche of Nashville.
After I return from Reno, I fly off to Ketchikan AK to
spend a week with my daughter going halibut
fishing, crab potting, and generally checking out
the island and eating plenty of fresh seafood. And
what does this all mean to you? It means you will
not see me much next month, but I will be able to
attend the August 15 visit to Carl George's Vintage
Classic Garage for cars & coffee, following by a
rally so please join us.
Bruce Sweetman, club member and professional
photographer, has posted pictures to his website
from Porsche Parade and Indy Vintage Racing
event so please check them out at links below. All
are for sale at reasonable prices as are all the other
photo's on his website. I have 2 framed photo's in
my home office - one from Petit Lemans back with
the Flying Lizard Porsche on 2 wheels and another
from Quail Hollow Concours held during the
previous Rennsport Reunion.
We have club polo shirts for sale again at a great
price thanks to Rick Arnemann. Check out the link
in this newsletter and my various emails and order
yours today so you can pick up in Sept.
http://www.brucesweetman.com/Clients/PorscheParade-2015/
Lots of other good events between now and
October, but if you want to go on the October 17
drive down to Tullahoma TN for the annual Beech
Party at the Beechcraft Heritage Museum, you must
send your payment to Randy Lynch prior to Oct 16
(which means if Randy doesn't have your check or
cash in hand by that date, you don't go). Send
Randy your check today. More information in my
emails and this newsletter. We will be meeting up
with Heart-of-Dixie Region of PCA again near the
airfield and then driving over together - most likely
with a police escort as in the past.

With me being president of our Porsche club and
Score, I could really use some help arranging and
coordinating our monthly dinner meetings. If you
would like to help with this vital function, please let
me know. That's about it, so keep the Rev's up and
I will see you at Carl George's next month.
Mike
Our November meeting will again be at Porsche of
Nashville and it will include dinner and be our
annual "New Member Social" so all new and old

AUGUST 2015
The Pinnacle Portfolio
By: D Badler
If it’s August, it must be time for Monterey
insanity.
Let me start by stating this categorically. No, I
haven’t gone. And I don’t expect to make it this
year. But I do know people who have.
Then again, that’s like saying I once had dinner
with Billy Joel. What actually happened is that I
once sat in a restaurant where, across the
room, I saw Billy Joel dining alone, reading one
of those free real estate listing brochures.
It’s true. While I shared the same physical
proximity with him, and breathed the same air, I
was in reality not even in the same galaxy.
Just take a look at some of the rare fruit being
auctioned off this year.
There are also nine Ferraris, including one each
of all the supercars from the 288 GTO on, with
the exception of a LaFerrari.
The Enzo is number 400 of 400. The very car
that was presented to the Pope.
Two Bugatti Veyrons, serial number 001 and a
late-run 16.4 Super Sport, “one of less than
eight in the US.” Does that sound more
impressive than seven?
A McLaren F1 ‘LM-Specification.’ Which
means, according to auctioneer RM Sotheby’s,
it’s one of two street cars upgraded to race
specs.
I’ve been trying to get my head around the
collection, and the collector, who remains
anonymous.
For example, there are three cars from the ‘50s,
no more and nothing older. Along with the
Speedster, there’s a ’55 300 SL Alloy Gullwing,
one of 29 aluminum Gullwings produced, and a
’59 Ferrari LWB California Spider. That’s it from
the Eisenhower Era.
From the Swinging ‘60s, we find a ’64 250 LM
(more rare than a 250 GTO, they say -this one
is from the ’64 Earl’s Court Motor Show,) a ’67
275 GTB/4 and a ’67 Toyota 2000 GT, the first
LHD built, and the first in the U.S. (the
Japanese E-Type, they say.)
I draw your attention to a collection which,
according to Motor Authority, is called The
Pinnacle Portfolio. They say it’s “the most
expensive car collection ever to hit the auction
block.”
Cutting to the chase, so to speak, there are 24
cars. Yes, there are three Porsches in the
group, a ’56 356 A Speedster, a ’95 911
Carrera RS 3.8 and an ’88 959 “Komfort.”
No genuine E-Type? And, while we’re at it, no
427 Stingray? No Cobra? I know!
Now, if you ascribe to the theory that we covet
today what we drew in study hall in junior high
school, I would guess that the owner is a male
(please… name one female collector of this
provenance, name just one) in his 60s.
PAGE 5
SOLID GOLD
That he has mega-wealth and connections
in the automotive world is a given. I mean,
just how does one go about acquiring the
Pope’s Ferrari?
Why sell? To cover the cost of service on
his Gulfstream? On the refit of his Wally
Yacht, which is bobbing as we speak in the
harbor in Antibes?
But there are a few chinks in the heavenly
aura. For example, an ’05 Saleen S7.
Yeah, it’s twin-turbo and it was in a few
movies. But really.
And a Jaguar XJ220, which they call highly
original. Do I care?
And a Koenigsegg CCXR, one of five in the
U.S. Just waiting for the next Cannonball
Run debacle?
And an ’05 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
Even if it was purchased new by Robert
Petersen and shown at the Petersen
Automotive Museum.
AUGUST 2015
snuff.” And I’d backfill, with a ’65 Aston
Martin DB5 (make mine shaken, not stirred)
and a ’73 Carrera RS, along with the
aforementioned E-Type, Vette and Cobra.
And maybe a P1 and a 918 Spyder. Along
with the LaFerrari. Just to complete the
contemporary supercar set and the historic
supercar set.
Where is a Miura SV? An original Daytona
Spider? A Dino? I guess I forgot to
mention them… they’re in the collection
already.
Hey, let’s give the guy some credit.
From the Editor: I would love to start
featuring member’s cars in the newsletter.
If you’d like to see your car featured, please
send me a few pics and a write up of how
you found it, or one of your favorite road
trips in it, etc., to editor.mskpca@gmail.com.
I don’t know.
Ok, ok, if it were up to me, I’d swap these
out, quicker than you can say “not up to

MAY THE BIRD OF PARADISE CRAP ON YOUR PORSCHE
By John Hudson
It’s never too late. You’ve heard that all your life. Deciding to enter my 1987 911 Carrera in the
Concours d’Elegance at the Porsche Parade put that saying to the test. My 911 has been driven
270,000 miles since I purchased it new in 1987. To say it has patina is not an understatement.
Except for a new engine lid and rear bumper, thanks to getting rear ended 5 years age, it’s all
original-paint, interior, etc with 28 years and 270,000 of wear.
If you’ve never competed at the Parade level it’s intense. All the cars entered are just about perfect.
PCA members who bring their cars to Parade are serious competitors whether in concours, rallying,
or autocross. They know what it takes to win. Having entered my ’87 in only 2 events, I didn’t have
much experience preparing the car for competition at this level. Most of my concouring has been with
my 356 SC coupe over the years with great success. Competing with an all original “driver” with 270,
000 miles was going to be a challenge.
I easily put at least 100 plus hours preparing the car. At least 50 since our Concours in the Park in
June. Nothing was too small to not repair, replace, or clean. I registered in the Preparation Class
where maintenance and cleanliness will be judged. You have to be a little unbalanced to do that to
yourself. When Wendy and I left for French Lick on the 20th, the car was as clean if not cleaner than
the day it left the factory.
That’s the good news. Bad news was it started to rain just north of Gallatin and didn’t stop until we
crossed the Ohio River. Obviously, Sunday the day before the Concours was going to be very busy
fixing what the rain had screwed up. I took my time, over an hour, washing the car making sure each
section was clean. When I was just about finished drying the car I notice a very large deposit of bird
crap on the left rear quarter.
Figured God had sent me a message. Just wasn’t sure what it was! Everyone I told what had
happened said that’s a good sign. Monday, the day of the Concours would determine if they were
right about the bird crap.

To make a long story short, the ’87 was 1st in class for 1974-1989 911’s!! You could have knocked
me over with a feather when the results were posted. The quality of the other 911s was outstanding.
The 2d place winner was a ’89 cab turbo with only 32,000 miles and I thought would win the class.
The 3d place car was next to mine and had a new tangerine paint job. More people looked at it than
mine, but then again, it is the judge’s decision that is final.
It was great to see my old car on the screen at the awards banquet, and for me, to get a very special
reward for all the time I spent in the garage was very satisfying.
PAGE 8

AUGUST 2015
During the past 12 months, the ’87 won its class at Rennfest (Peachstate Region), our Concours in
the Park, and now the Porsche Parade so it’s time to retire the ‘87 and its owner from future
competition! One extra benefit of winning the award for 1st in Class was to have Dr Peter Porsche
autograph the award for me.
I guess it’s never too late to try anything and having a bird crap on your Porsche is really a good
thing!!
