Southland Staff Members attend Corwin
Kronenberg presentation in Grand Meadow
Southland Staff Members had
the opportunity to attend a presentation, “A Positive Approach to Discipline”
by Corwin Kronenberg on October 23,
2006, at Grand Meadow Public Schools.
Mr. Kronenberg is a parent,
teacher, author, and highly sought after
expert in the areas of self-concept and
discipline. He is the creator of a nationally known behavior management system
called Above the Line. Mr. Kronenberg
delivers his message with enthusiasm,
drama and humor.
The presentation was sponsored
by the Cedar River Education Distirct.
Schools attending the presentation were
Austin Catholic Schools, Grand Meadow,
LeRoy, Lyle, Sacred Heart and Southland.
Southland Elementary Book Fair to be held
on Tuesday, December 5th
The Southland Elementary Book
Fair will be held on Tuesday, December
5th, during the day and also during the
Fall/Winter Concert. Scholastic will be
conducting the fair and has numerous
titles and selections. Proceeds will be
used to purchase new materials for the
Southland Elementary School Library.

Thank you to all the staff,
parents, and students of Sacred Heart
and Southland Schools who cooperated
to make the FluMist Clinic on 10/24/06
such a huge success! We gave over 400
doses of vaccine to eligible students
K-12 in three locations.
Students who were absent or
who didn’t return permission forms prior
to that day will have another opportunity
to get the free FluMist vaccine on
December 12th. As explained on the
form, students younger than 9 years of
age will get a second dose of the vaccine
that day. We are also making alternate
arrangements for PSEO students to get
the vaccine at Mower Co. Public Health
in Austin. Please call the school and
leave a message for Cheryl (Southland
Nurse) if you have questions.
Veteran’s Day Program at Southland
Elementary
Southland Elementary fifth grade
students presented a musical program
to honor Veterans on the morning of
November 8. Members of the American
Legion Post 146 presented the colors of
the flag along with the fifth grade Cub
Scouts.
Many parents and community
members attended the program which
featured the singing of patriotic songs
and a song called “Those Who Served.” Fifth graders composed essays
in writing class and published them in
technology class. Six students were
chosen to read their essays.
The
class also wrote and performed a skit
“Veterans’ Day Jeopardy” to teach
about Veterans’ Day.

will host
Middle School
Instrumental
Festival
The Southland Middle School will
be hosting the Middle School Instrumental
Festival on Saturday, January 27, 2007.
Band students from area schools,
including Kingsland and Hayfield, will
perform solos and ensembles. Parents
are invited and encouraged to come
and listen to any of these students
perform. The event begins at 8:30 AM
and concludes around 11:00 AM with a
performance for everyone of the “Bestin-Site” award winners.
This is a great opportunity
for students to perform for others as
well as listen to students from other
schools. The performer also receives
encouragement and expertise from
another band director.
Southland band students grades
7 & 8 will choose their performance solo
at their lesson the week of December 11.
Help will be given to each student during
band rehearsals. However, students are
expected to practice outside of school.
A schedule of performance times will be
given to each student several days prior
to the event.
Halloween fun sponsored
by the Southland FCCLA
The Southland FCCLA sponsored various activities for
Halloween 2006. Dress up costumes were modeled at school
and prizes awarded by the FCCLA. Many students and staff
joined in the fun.

Dr. Susan Udelhofen presents workshop on curriculum mapping
Staff members from Southland
and Kingsland School Districts participated in a curriculum mapping workshop
on November 22, 2006, at Southland
Middle and High School. The workshop
was presented by Dr. Susan Udelhofen.
Dr. Susan Udelhofen is a nation
al staff development leader providing
consulting services to school districts,
education agencies, universities and
colleges. Her work concentrates primarily on issues and practices related to
curriculum mapping, teacher mentor-
ing, assessment, standards and program
evaluation.
Dr.
Udelhofen
earned
a
doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction,
and a M.S. in Educational Psychology,
both from the University of Wisconsin
– Madison. Her experience includes
work at the Wisconsin Department
of Public Instruction as a Goals 2000
consultant, and gifted and talented
consultant. She has taught courses in
teacher mentoring, assessment, reading
methods, children’s literature, gifted
and talented education, and also served
as supervisor/instructor of preservice
teachers at the University of WisconsinMadison. She is an experienced classroom
teacher and holds current licensure.
She is the co-author of, The Mentoring
Year: A Step-by-Step Guide to
Professional Development published by
Corwin Press and The Teacher Journal:
Reflections About Teaching and Learning
self-published.

includes appearances at the National

New addition to the
Sheehan Family
Southland PTO pork dinner rescheduled for
December 4th
The rescheduled Southland PTO
Pork Dinner will be held on Monday,
December 4th in the all purpose room
at the high school. Serving will be from
5:00 to 6:30 PM.
This is also the night of the
winter holiday concert, so students,
Bob Sheehan, Southland High
School Business Education Teacher/Activities Director, and his wife, Jill, are
the proud parents of a baby boy, Calder
Joseph.
He was born on October 12,
2006, and joins brothers, Camden and
Cade, and sister, Carma, at home.
Calder weighed seven pounds,
six ounces and was 18 1/2 inches long. Congratulations to the Sheehan
Family!

come to eat before the concert. Pork
sandwiches, cheesy potatoes, beans,
cole slaw and bars will be served. The
cost is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for

Elementary
Students
at
Southland
Elementary School celebrated Halloween
with their traditional costume parade
and afternoon parties.
Third grade students performed
some spooky songs to add to the fun.
They sang a partner song, putting two
songs together. They performed a choral
speech in which instruments added
effects to a poem entitled “Halloween.”
Third graders also sang a spiritual “Dem
Bones” accompanied by boomwhackers
and rhythm sticks.
Elementary music is directed by
Mrs. Laura Freund.
Southland hosts Three Rivers Conference
Honor Band and Choir Festival
Southland hosted the Three
Rivers Conference Honor Band and Choir
Festival Tuesday, November 14, 2006, in
the Southland High School Gymnasium. The 120 voice choir, directed by
Mr. Rodney Urtel, Mankato, presented
five selections. Dr. Amy Foley, Mankato
State directed the 100 piece band.

Sharon Monson and Jack Klaehn
were recently elected to the Southland
School Board.
Sharon is an Adams resident
who was the 1981 Southland High School
Valedidctorian. She and her husband,
Ray, have two sons who are in the 9th
and 12th grades. Sharon has worked in
the healthcare field for over 20 years
and has been with the Austin Medical
Center Information Systems Department
since 1997. She has been a member of
the St. John’s Parish Council, Sacred
Heart School Board and Southland Youth
Basketball Board.
Jack is a farmer in the Elkton/
Dexter area. He and his wife, Tam, who
is employed at Mayo Clinic, have two
children in grades 4 and 6. Jack is a
Southland graduate and is also a Southland school bus driver.
Incumbent school board member, Pat Graves, was re-elected to another term. She has been on the board
for 10 years and is current chair. She and
her husband, Ray, who works at Information System Sciences in Elkton, have
three grown children and live in Elkton.
Pat is the postmaster at Wykoff and has
been with the Post Office for 20 years.

What is ECFE?
Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is for all Southland #500 parents
of children between birth and kindergarten. Whether you are a single parent, a
teen parent, a stay-at-home mom or dad, or an employed parent, ECFE is for you!
We offer weekly parent/child classes, special events, and other services. ECFE is
“Time Together” . . . You spend quality time with your child, learning more about
their interests and abilities. ECFE is “Time Apart” . . . While children are with a
children’s teacher, you and other parents meet with a parent educator to discuss
timely concerns. The support, encouragement, and new ideas you receive from the
group make being a parent more rewarding.

Families will put together and decorate a small Gingerbread
House. These houses have become a Christmas tradition at the
Early Childhood Center. Please bring a half bag of candy for use
in decorating the houses. The candies will be pooled for all to get an assortment
of items to decorate a house. We will provide all other materials. Southland Early

Classes run one and one half hours. The first 45
minutes parents and children play together and have a group
circle activity. Toys and a variety of activities are set out
from which the family can select learning experiences. The
last 45 minutes, parents and children divide. The children will
spend time with their peers and Early Childhood teacher in activities that encourage
cognitive development, sociability, sharing and developing independence. The
parents will meet together for informal discussion and presentations on relevant
topics for their needs.

The Southland School District offers a preschool opportunity
for children 3 – 4 years old or 3 by Mar. 1st. This child only
class meets once a week on either Tuesday or Thursday from
12:30 – 3:00 p.m. The class focuses on encouraging sociability,
sharing and developing independence. An additional component of the class is
that families attend weekly ECFE parent/child classes. Play & Learn classes
are:
Tuesdays: Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb 6, 13, 27, Mar. 6.

Thursdays: Jan. 11, 18, 25, Feb 1, 8, 15, Mar. 1, 8.
Fee: $90.00 per child, which includes 8 weeks of Play & Learn and 8 weeks of ECFE

the Adams Booster Club. There will refreshments served by the
Girl Scouts. In the gym we will have a make & take activity to do
with assistance from high school students. Bring your camera
to take pictures with Santa.

The families attending the Early Childhood center classes will provide a
great variety of freshly baked cookies. Walk around tables and choose the cookies
you’d like. Boxes will be provided to fill with your cookie selections. Come early,
the sale will continue until the cookies are gone or 11:30
Cost: $4.00 per pound
Cookie sales will be contributed to the Early Childhood Scholarship funds.

Immunization Records by Minnesota law requires that all children attending
Early Childhood Family Education programs have their immunization records or a
notarized statement for exemption from immunization on file. We will keep a file
copy and you may update it as necessary. Please bring your immunization records
1st class.

Southland students featured in the Austin
Daily Herald
A recent article in the Austin
Daily Herald featured a group of Southland seniors who refurbished a 1982 Ford
Econoline Van in true Gopher style. The
article was written by Brian Monson, another Southland senior, who also writes
for the Herald.
The article details the process
involved in purchasing and refurbishing
the van. The students inolved are Justin
Bastian, Drew Boe, Andy Johnson, Ross
Kellogg, Cody Kirkpatrick and Adam Nelson.
The group drives the van to all
home Gopher games and participates in
the traditional tailgating festivities.
Adam Nelson and Drew Boe created a documentary about the van for a
media arts project at school. To view the

Community Education
What is Community Education?
Who decides what courses will be offered?
You do. From phone calls, evaluation forms, and surveys, you tell us what
courses you want, and we listen. Then we do the work to find the appropriate personnel to bring you the information you want.
We are always looking for individuals who would like to share their hobbies,
talents, and skills by teaching a Community Education Class. Most instructors are
not professional teachers. They are community people like you, who enjoy being
with people and sharing their talents. Instructors are paid.
Who takes Community Ed Classes?
People just like you. People who are in search of life enrichment and want
to meet interesting people. People who are striving for personal and professional
growth take Community Ed Classes. The classes are designed with the idea that
learning is life-long and doesn’t necessarily happen within four walls of a school.
They are also a fun and a great way to meet new people.
Why are classes often in the schools?
The Community Ed program is the part of the school district designed to
link the schools and community. Because the school buildings belong to you - the
public- we like to give you every opportunity to get into the classrooms and do some
learning yourself. With that in mind, we invite you to attend any of the Community
Ed Classes that interest you. Sit back and read the schedule and call today for a
class that interests you.
Bread Baking
Learn the nearly forgotten art of making bread. We will bake bread and
biscuits, taste test them, and mix up another batch so we learn the whole process.
There will be a tasty door prize for some lucky participant to take home for lunch!

Card Party Kick-Off!
Come to the Monday Afternoon Card Party Kick-Off on December 11th. We
will have prizes and games to attract everyone’s curiosity. Get together to play
Bridge, 500, Hand and Foot, Cribbage, or anything you choose. Bring your friends
or come alone for an afternoon of fun and socializing. We can meet every Monday
after this kick-off event to play cards or games during these long winter months. No
excuses! Get out and have some fun! If you need to coordinate a ride, call Cathy
582-3639. This is a great opportunity to get together and socialize without having
to entertain in your own home. We can make these Mondays fit the needs of all
attendees so make your wishes known!

Co-Ed Volleyball
We have 5 teams and a few other names who will play so if you were
thinking about it but didn’t get around to signing up, CALL Patti Felten at 5823181 or Cathy Sumner at 440-5068. You can still beat the winter blahs by getting
together with your friends playing volleyball. It’s great exercise and gives you a
chance to do something for yourself that is fun and good for you!

Mel Tillis and Lee Greenwood in Concert
Country Legend Mel Tillis has recorded 36 Top Ten singles with nine of them
going to #1 – “Good Woman Blues” and “Coca Cola Cowboy” to name a couple. He
has also written hits for other artists such as Kenny Rogers and Ricky Skaggs. Lee
Greenwood is also a talented singer and songwriter recently known for his patriotic
anthem of “God Bless the USA”. They both perform regularly in Branson, MO. Plan
to have dinner after the concert before heading home.

“Rippin’-Stitchers” Quilting
Join in an informal evening of quilting and learning. Bring a project to work

Snowmobile Safety Class
There will be a snowmobile safety class for ages 11 ½ and up in December.
The dates have not been set yet. Information will be sent home with students but

Taekwondo
Study the basics of one of the oldest and best martial arts forms. These
classes focus on basic self-defense, flexibility and balance. Participants learn
problem-solving, build self-esteem and gain self-confidence while having fun!

Highlights from the Volleyball Banquet
On Tuesday, November 14th, coaches, parents and members of the 2006
volleyball team ate at the Sacred Heart Chili Supper. Following the meal, an awards
program was held. The awards were given to:

SENIORS
From the Counselor ... Mrs. Schmit
If you haven’t done so already, now is the time seniors need to be getting
in those college applications. Remember that schools like Winona, U of MN and
Wisconsin Universities have early deadlines. Don’t procrastinate!!
Check out the scholarship binders in the media center. Students can look
over the scholarships and decide which ones they are eligible for. They can then fill
out the scholarship request form indicating the scholarship(s) for which they would
like to apply and turn it in to Mrs. Schmit. Please allow yourself at least two weeks
to complete the application, essay, and obtain any letters of recommendation, if
necessary.
JUNIORS
Right now it is important for juniors to concentrate on two things: their
grades and volunteer opportunities. The end of the semester will be here soon. Juniors are reminded that the cumulative GPA and class rank they have at
the end of 11th grade is that which will be printed on the transcripts they send with
their college applications next fall.
The other task is for students to look for opportunities to volunteer! Many
times the determining factor for scholarship recipients comes down to “What are
they giving back to the community?” Volunteering to be a mentor for the Mower
County Mentoring Program would be a great place to start!
SOPHOMORES
44 Sophomores took the PLAN test. Mrs. Schmit will review the results with
the students when they come in.
Sophomore year can be a tough one for students. There is little room for
electives because of the requirements. Hang in there! If students pass all of their
classes – most of which are required classes – they will have room for more electives
next year. If they don’t pass, then they repeat the required classes and have fewer
electives.
FRESHMAN
The first quarter report cards were mailed out mid-November. Students
and parents please remember that the final semester grade in January is what will
go on their final academic transcript. If students don’t pass a required class they
will need to repeat the class next year or at Austin’s summer school ALC program. Please make sure that students are attending class, putting forth their best
effort and turning in assignments on time. If students are struggling with a class,
let the teacher know. Help is available before and after school.

Now what?

With the operating referendum
being voted down, many people are
asking, “Now what?” “Will we go for
another referendum?” “If we do, how
soon can we vote again?” “Will there be
budget reductions again?” “How big will
the reduction amount be this time?”
Contrary to rumors, no programs
or people have been eliminated at this
time, either for this year or next year.
Some of the facts are as follows:
If a referendum is voted on
again, we must do it on the first Tuesday
following the first Monday in November.
In other words, we would have an
election at the same time next year as
we did this year.
Our school board is meeting
with the LeRoy-Ostrander school board
on January 3rd to discuss options for
both districts’ futures. It will be a
brainstorming and fact-finding session,
with no decisions made at that time.
It is a first attempt to see if and what
programs and/or staff could be shared
as part of a cost-saving measure.
A decision on whether or not
to reduce expenditures and, if so, how
much, will not be made until after the
meeting with LeRoy-Ostrander. As a
result, it will be January or February
before the board decides on budget issues
for next year. Preliminary figures from
our business manager indicate a need
to reduce expenditures by $200,000$300,000 for next year, based on our
enrollment decline and inflation. Please
keep in mind that this is very preliminary
at this point, and other factors could
change that dollar amount.
Finally, I want to say again that
no list of reductions has been made, and
no program or person has been told that
they are eliminated next year.

For $30, parents, family members, and friends can
let their senior know how much they care. Write up a note
of congratulations and submit it to Jen Thielen by mail or
email by January 2, 2007.
