GOSPEL REFLECTION
JOHN 14:1-12
Jesus and His
disciples are
gathered for the
Last Supper. He
tells them that He
is going to prepare
a place for them,
but Thomas points
out that they do not
know the place or the way to get there. What Thomas
and the others have not yet grasped is that Jesus Himself
is the way. When Philip asks Jesus to show us the
Father, He makes it clear that He and God the Father are
one. The words and works of Jesus are the words and
works of the Father.

This is a very beautiful Gospel passage. Can you find
comfort when Jesus says “Do not let your hearts be
troubled?” Do you believe that Jesus has prepared a
place for you in His kingdom? Are you like Philip and
still struggling to know Jesus? What can you do to
follow Jesus and continue His good works? What exactly
is Jesus asking us to believe?

Catholic faith, as well as any baptized
Catholics seeking to receive the sacraments
of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. Information sessions

INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN
EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF
HOLY COMMUNION?
RCIA MONTHLY INQUIRY
PHASE SESSIONS
An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is a
term used in the Roman Catholic Church for members of
the laity who have been authorized to distribute the
Eucharist to members of the congregation during Mass.
In the Catholic Mass, the ordinary ministers of Holy
Communion are the bishop, priest and deacon; laity may
be delegated to assist in the distribution of Communion
and are referred to accurately as Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion. The next training
sessions for any confirmed parishioner interested in
serving are on Wednesday, June 11, from 7 to
9 pm or Saturday, June 14, from 10 am to noon. Both
training sessions are held in the Sanctuary. You only
need to attend one session. To RSVP or for more
information, contact Dave Vasquez at
dvasquez@carolina.rr.com or 704-843-7965.
Monthly Inquiry phase sessions, for those who have
previously attended an information meeting and have an
interest in learning about the Catholic Church, begin on
Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. in NLC 203. These
ongoing sessions will be held once a month until
September when weekly sessions will commence.
Sessions are open to those never baptized, those baptized
in another Christian faith, and baptized Catholics who
have not received all of the remaining sacraments of
initiation (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). No preregistration is required.
For more information on either of these meetings, call
Tom Lindemuth at 704-543-7677 x 1063 or
704-840-4088 for non-office hours.

SERVING CHARLOTTE’S HOMELESS
QUARTERLY MEN’S SHELTER
UNDERWEAR DRIVE
Would you like to help feed the
underserved of our community? The
teens of St. Matthew are bringing
dinner to 150 - 180 of our homeless
brothers and sisters in uptown
Charlotte on May 29 and they need
your help! We need food donations
of all kinds. We are serving breakfast
for dinner. Can you add an item or
two to your grocery cart; perhaps a
couple loaves of bread, a case of
water or a couple dozen eggs? To signup, visit
http://tinyurl.com/k7kquha or contact Kate
Dennstaedt at kgdenn@gmail.com or 443-745-8401.
The St Matthew Men’s Shelter
Ministry conducts four collections
per year. Please consider donating
packages of new, unopened
underwear (BOXER SHORTS
PREFERRED), t-shirts, socks or
personal toiletry items during May.
The men at the shelter have great need for small
personal size deodorants, razors, shaving cream,
toothbrushes and toothpaste. Please place your donations
in the large collection containers in the Narthex or the
west entry to the Sanctuary. We appreciate your
continued support of Charlotte’s homeless men.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and
you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me.

2014 WORLD HUNGER DRIVE
Please unite with us, we need your help!
If you are interested in being a part of the
12TH ANNUAL WORLD HUNGER DRIVE
planning committee, join us
at our next meeting on
Monday, June 2,
from 7 to 8:30 pm
in NLC 202.
Did you know that?
 The DSA provides for the annual operating
budget of the diocese. With a population growth
rate of more than four percent and our annual
budget growing at about the same rate, it is
inadequate to support the diocese’s investments.
 Twenty-five cents of every received pledge
dollar for Forward In Faith, Hope and Love is
rebated quarterly to St. Matthew, regardless if
we meet our goal or not.
 All of the rebated funds we receive are used to
provide for the additional space needed for our
growing parish and the future construction costs
at St. Matthew South.
 We need your help - please consider
volunteering. Parishioners are needed to make
phone calls. For more information, plan on
attending our next training meeting on Monday,
May 19, at 7:30 pm in the Parish Center
Family Room or call Leigh at 704-249-4393.
For more information, call
Mark Creasser at 704-634-0325,

10,000 ROSARIES FOR LIFE
The Respect Life Ministry invites you to participate in
Rosaries for Life, a prayerful way to promote the
sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.
During the month of May, we are committed to
reciting 10,000 rosaries to strengthen the culture of life
in our nation.

by screaming, cutting ourselves off, overcompensating for others, or taking things personally, we operate out of our
anxiety and not from our values. ScreamFree teaches us how to calm down, grow up and get closer to the ones we love.
ScreamFree Parenting is a revolutionary approach that invites parents of all ages (with kids of all ages) to focus on
themselves, press the "pause button" on emotion, and create close, meaningful family relationships. Created by Marriage
and Family Therapist, Author Speaker Hal Runkel, ScreamFree Parenting has helped millions of parents create a calmer
household with more cooperation and respect. This program is facilitated by Jenny Cox a certified ScreamFree Parenting
Professional who is studying to become a licensed marriage and family therapist. She is married with two children.

 Bring a completed registration form.

knowledge and love of God. You are invited and there
is a need! We urge you to prayerfully consider
becoming a catechist with our Faith Formation program.
If you approach the task by asking the Lord to help you,
everyone will benefit.

of you. Thank you
for the friends we have made and the good times we

discover more of the miracles of living in the name of
Jesus and sharing all that is good and joyful each and
everyday. Amen.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 18, 2014
St. Matthew Catholic Church
MAY STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE
Many are familiar with the phrase, time, talent and treasure as a
description of Christian stewardship, and these are indeed
important aspects of it. However, stewardship is much more. It
entails accepting all aspects of our lives as gifts and inviting
God into each. God cares deeply about how we take care of our
bodies, emotions and relationships. God wants us to use
everything we have to bring about the kingdom in our lives and
the world around us. Bishop Robert Morneau of Green Bay,
Wisconsin, gave a presentation on the Spirituality of
Stewardship in which he presented the idea of stewardship as
plots in a garden that we are called to tend during our lives. The
Stewardship Committee is pleased to offer this month’s
reflection, based on one aspect of Bishop Morneau’s analogy of
the garden as a framework for your personal contemplation.
GARDEN OF THE POLIS, OUR POLITICAL GARDEN
With the NC state primaries for the November mid-term elections recently
completed, it seems opportune to take a few minutes to reflect on our
political garden. Are we taking for granted the rights, liberties and freedoms
that our country affords us? Have we proved to be good and worthy
custodians and stewards of the rights of citizenship that we are privileged to
have? Reflect on your answers to the following questions and consider what
you can do to improve the growth in your Garden of the Polis.




Do you inform yourself about local, state, country and worldwide political issues?
Do you vote in local, state and national elections?
Does your faith influence your political views?
What political issues are most important to you? Have you ever taken the time to contact your government
representative to express your concern about specific issues?
 Have you considered taking some small steps or initiatives that would create a more just community, either
locally or on a wider scale?
 Have you ever attended a session of Citizenship Court to witness and welcome new immigrants as fellow
countrymen?

VOCATIONS AWARENESS MINISTRY
Let us introduce you to Gary Schrieber, who will be ordained a permanent deacon at the
Ordination to the Order of Diaconate on Saturday, May 31 at St. Mark in Huntersville. In
his own words, Gary tells us more about himself in the following paragraphs.
“I come from the small town of Campbell, Ohio, which is just over a square mile and the
population is about half the size of St. Matthew. I was raised with six brothers and sisters,
and when we filed into church we took up the entire pew. I went to Memorial High
School where I played football, then went on to graduate from Youngstown State
University. I worked in technology and for many years my job took me to cities across the
country, including Cincinnati (OH), Dallas (TX), Wilmington (DE), Columbus (OH),
Boston (MA), Columbus (GA), Tampa (FL), and finally Charlotte.
I am married to Marilyn, and have two children: Brian and Kaitlyn. Our youngest son,
Daniel, was diagnosed with leukemia when he was two years old and passed away when
he was six. Both Brian and Kaitlyn are in college at UNCC. My wife and I taught faith
formation for Brian and went on to teach his confirmation class, then did the same with
Katie. We are a close family and enjoy spending time together for meals, sitting on the
patio with a cold beverage and going on vacations to the beach.
I grew up as a Vatican II Catholic. I made all my sacraments (so far) in the small parish of St Elizabeth, and started
saying the rosary after my First Holy Communion. I remain dedicated to our Blessed Mother to this day. Several times
throughout my life, I thought about ordination but really didn’t think about it seriously until a few years back when I first
came to St. Matthew. I met with Msgr. McSweeney and told him I was interested but I didn’t think I was a good enough
person to become a deacon. I remember his answer clearly as he leaned over his desk and said, ‘Get over yourself!’ He
went on to say nobody is good enough. So going on the premise of God qualifies the called, I decided to take the next
step and filled out an application for diaconate formation. The last four years have been challenging but have allowed me
to grow so much spiritually. I look forward to serving my family at St. Matthew for many years to come.”
