The angel recalls the prophecy to David that we saw in the first reading. "The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Mary does not understand this great mystery but accepts God's will humbly: "I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me . . . ." There may be times when God will ask of us things we do not completely understand. Mary's openness to God's will can help us. We should pray lovingly and gratefully to Mary for the blessings she helps bring to us. Mary does not understand all that God was asking of her. How can we listen to God who speaks to us in different ways and respond with the same openness as Mary? MATTHEW COMMUNITY Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our St. Matthew parish family and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen. Confidential Prayer Line: If you would like to have someone prayed for individually and in a confidential manner, please contact Joan Kelley by email at joanckly@carolina.rr.com. THE DEVOTIONAL LIFE AT ST. MATTHEW The Liturgy of the Hours in the Eucharisc Chapel Morning Prayer - Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. Evening Prayer - Wednesdays, 7 p.m. Night Prayer - Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Eucharisc Adoraon Begins after the 9 a.m. Friday Mass and continues until the 9 a.m. Saturday Mass Recitaon of the Holy Rosary After 9 a.m. daily Mass CENTERING PRAYER GROUP Centering prayer is based on the wisdom saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, “…but when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret, will reward you.”(MT6:6) The method of centering prayer quiets the mind and allows us to be present to God as God is present to us. These gatherings are open to all who are presently engaged in the practice of centering prayer. The regular meetings take place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in NLC 206. If you would like to find out more about this ancient practice of prayer or for questions about this ongoing group, please contact Bruce Hassett, 704-641-9041 or Janie Normile, 803-396-8016. ALIVE IN THE SPIRIT CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP Each week we gather in a spirit of praise and worship through song, prayer, Scripture reading, teaching and using charismatic gifts. The atmosphere is one of friendship, love, support and encouragement. Join us every Monday night from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Choir Room. For information, contact Barbara Gardner at chlt5nc@aol.com. All are welcome. 4 DEATHS ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO Frank Brefere, husband of Josephine Brefere; Bob Clary, father of Kathy Mathews; Richard Edgeworth, husband of Ginger Edgeworth; Carol Gilman, mother of Greg Gilman; Tom Kennedy, brother of Gail McInerney; AND MAY PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name. His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers. STAY UP-TO-DATE THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Follow us on: What could make a person happier than to know they are loved by Love itself? • What could make a person happier than to know their Creator forgives their mistakes and lovingly welcomes them back? These are some of the gifts our special friends receive in SPRED. Our special friends are persons from age six to adulthood with mental challenges or developmental disabilities. They participate in this small group faith formation program accompanied by an adult Catechist helper. The SPRED Ministry is growing, and we need more Catechists to help our special friends on their faith journey. We are looking for parishioners over the age of 21, who want to share their love of God. There is no specialized experience required, we provide the training. For information, contact SPRED Coordinator Jan Clemens at 704-246-7102. Join us today at 12:30 for a special Mass for persons with developmental disabilities and their families. The assembly will include St. Matthew parishioners, special guests from other parishes and the United Methodist Adult Residences. God invites us to join Him, he invites us to follow Him, he invites us to create with Him. May we have the strength and perseverance to say “yes” as Mary did. Please patronize our sponsors. • 8 Mary said "yes" to God's call without knowing what it would mean. Her story shows that nothing is impossible with God. Think of one area of your family life that you think is impossible. During prayer time this week, ask God for assistance with that family situation. Gather with your family and say the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary together. Ask Mary to give you the courage to listen to God as she did. Each of us has a place in the unfolding story of our family history. How have you carried on the story of faith in your family? Review the Hail Mary with your children. Make sure they can each say it from memory. PARISH MEMBERSHIP AND BENEFITS To be considered an active, participating member of the parish, and thus eligible for (MACS) tuition assistance and sacramental sponsor eligibility, St. Matthew Catholic Church takes into account a family’s or individual’s ministry involvement and Mass attendance. Since weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, we ask that if you can’t make a contribution on a given Sunday, that you still place your envelope in the collection basket so we can record your attendance. If you are using Faith Direct, then please use the personalized offertory cards indicating your Mass attendance. • E-giving! You can now give a single donation or sign up for on-going donations through our electronic giving provider Faith Direct. It’s easy, safe and environmentally friendly. Simply scan this code using your smart phone to enroll online today or visit www.faithdirect.net using our church code, NC36. • Not so tech savvy? You can still utilize the safety and convenience of Faith Direct by completing the enrollment form located at the Welcome Desk. Simply complete and mail to Faith Direct. • Consider stock gifts. There may be tax advantages to you in contributing appreciated stock. Stock donation forms are available online at www.charlottediocese.org, “Opportunities for Giving” tab. • Gifts directly from your IRA. Congress extended the deadline through 2011 allowing up to $100,000 to be donated by individuals age 70 ½ or older, without a tax liability when given directly from an individual retirement account (IRA). This method of giving is particularly beneficial if you do not itemize deductions. Attendance at Mass is the most meaningful way we model and live our Catholic faith. SAFETY TIPS FOR THE CHURCH Please be mindful of your surroundings at all times. Be careful with all your valuables while on church property. It is important to keep your personal belongings with you. Please take your purse with you when you leave the pew for any reason. Also, please do not leave valuables in your car while on church property. If you must leave valuables in your car, secure them in the trunk. Remember to keep your car locked. Please contact Chief Financial Officer Jane Balbirnie at (704) 543-7677 x 1046 for further details on any of these methods of giving. As always, contact your tax professional to discuss specific tax implications. HANDICAPPED PARKING SPACES St. Matthew has many handicapped parking spaces located throughout the campus. These parking spaces are clearly denoted with signs. Some spaces, specifically those in the main circle at the fountain, have large areas between the spaces to allow for wheelchair access. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE What is your definition of a perfect Christmas? Is receiving an expensive watch or piece of jewelry the perfect gift? Is having the latest IPhone or MacBook? How about for your children? New IPods with five zillion gigabytes and the latest and greatest cell phone with limitless texting and calls? Do you have your priorities in order? Would our Christmas and the holidays be better for all if we surrounded ourselves with family and friends and enjoyed good conversation and great memories of years past? Enjoying the Christmas holidays is not so much the gifts or the food, but laughing together, talking together, having fun with the children; it’s the strong sense of family and friendship that is a tradition that can be carried on year after year. Another tradition to carry on is the gift of stewardship. Can we honestly say we are being good stewards, particularly at this time of year? Money and worldly possessions should not be the focus of our lives. The Bible says that even if you gain wealth don’t let money be the center of your life. When your life is about helping others, that’s when God blesses you. Let us remember that Christmas would not be Christmas without CHRIST. Our annual Stewardship of Treasure campaign will be held early next month. Please prayerfully consider how you will share what God has given you. The Stewardship Committee wishes all of our parishioners a holy and blessed Christmas and New Year for 2012!
