www.ThePhoenixClub.com Im Weiten, Wilden Westen Ist Anaheim am Besten! Prinz Harold I. Prinzessin Kerstin I. Liebe Karnevalsfreunde, Auch in diesem Jahr wieder meine besten Wünsche an die Anaheim Karnevalsgesellschaft im Phoenix Club. Möge Eure KarnevalsSession in USA wieder humorvoll und unterhaltend sein, wie ich es seit so vielen Jahren von Euch gewohnt bin. Viel Spass, Helau und Alaaf, Egon Kummetz, Bonn Deutschland Euro-Ambassador der Anaheim Karnevalsgesellschaft im Phoenix Club Greetings from the Elferratspresident Again our favored time of the year has arrived. The” Karnevalszeit”, “Die Fünfte Jahreszeit” or as we now say, the “Mardi Gras Time” is here and the World belongs to the “Narren” once again. This year our theme is: “Im Weiten, Wilden Westen ist Anaheim am Besten”. Come and celebrate with us at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. Anaheim HELAU, ALAAF and AHOI Manfred Walter, Elferratspräsident Message from the Group Leader Welcome to the 43rd year of Karneval at the Phoenix Club. We have another full season of celebrations and parties with four themed events where we invite you to come in costume; Reeperbahn, (The famous Red Light District of Hamburg comes to Southern California), South of the Border, (From the Rio Grande to Rio de Janeiro), our Grand Costume Ball, and Lumpenball (Dress like you’re broke, causes we’ll all be at this season ending event). You may find that the year passes quickly, but the Karneval season will pass even faster, so visit our website at http://karneval.thephoenixclub.com for the full listing of dates and times to mark down on your calendar because there’s not an event to miss. We look forward to seeing you there! Mark Davis Gruppenleiter Der Elferrat V.L.N.R. A welcome from your Prince and Princess To begin this Karneval time, “They’ve chosen the Schützen-King, no less!” Let me explain how both crowns can be mine. Your Prince’s motto, Bis vivit qui bene vivit, Means “He lives twice who lives well”. Karneval gives us a double life, doesn’t it? So the Schützen King is the Prince of fools as well. Tonight your double life begins, But this fool’s season is not very long. Each of us is allowed a few little sins. Mine will be Beer, Women, and Song. This second life you can live as you choose, No longer a slave to your inhibitions. Some may pretend to be flirty or loose Allowing them to liberally spread affection. Your Prince proclaims Kussfreiheit across the land, But, by all means, be discreet. Your girlfriends will probably understand, But I doubt your wife will agree. They say all good speeches must come to an end And the end of this speech is now. We lift our glasses and begin our Reign with a resounding “Phoenix Helau!” Anaheim, den 11. This is our 10th Karneval season for “Smileys☺” and we still came up with another smiley performance! We are happy to have with us, once again, guest performer, Paul Gunnemann! Paul is gifted with a rolling belly that has enhanced our previous shows, such as the Arabian belly dance, and the Caribbean Calypso dance. Now we use his talent again for this years’ African performance. We always have many laughs when Paul is around and we hope you will laugh, too! We wish you all a Smiley Karneval Season! THE SMILEYS☺ are Margaret Baurmann, Annie Schanz, Margitta Lübke, Gisela Simons, Jutta Picard, Gerda Wisser, Gusti Herget, Siegrun Wrembel (not pictured), Renate Halstead, Margrit Graef, Marlene Rakeman, Frankie Anley, and Hildegard Moeller. One of the great traditions of Karneval are the Büttenreden, where the “fools” had the opportunity to make fun of the government. The Phoenix Club continues this tradition of German satire with their Prunksitzung. Kinderkarneval Kinderkarneval 2006-2007 2007-2008 Prince Martin I and Princess Samantha I (pic right), Kinderprinzenpaar of 2007, will turn over their happy reign at “Kinderkarneval in Hawaii 2008”. The official coronation of Prince Christopher I and Princess Vanessa I will take place on Sunday, January 27th at 3:11 pm in the Phoenix Club Ballroom. We invite all the children and those “young at heart” to come in costume and join the festivities, including music, dancing, games, a costume contest with prizes and a performance by the Junior Prinzengarde. On behalf of the Youth Dance Group, we thank the Anaheim Karnevalgesellschaft at the Phoenix Club for their continued kind support. Phoenix Helau! Prinzengarde Anaheim Karnevalsgesellschaft of the Phoenix Club As the “Royal Guard” to the Prince and Princess of the Anaheim Karnevalsgesellschaft, we pride ourselves on creating high-energy dance routines each year, to entertain audiences at Karneval and German cultural events throughout the year. We have a co-ed group, which allows us to do cheerleading and “swing” type stunts in addition to our traditional kick lines, line dance and ballet moves. We particularly enjoy creating “theme” dances to go along with the Phoenix Club themes for each Karneval event. Last year our Funkenmariechen (soloist) and Tanzpaar (dance pair) traveled to German Embassy in Washington, DC to perform at a “Black Tie” Karneval event. In previous years members of our group traveled to Germany to participate in Karneval festivities in Köln (Cologne) and performed in several surrounding towns. This year we had the opportunity to have coaching and choreography lessons for our “South of the Border” Samba routine from an accomplished Latin Ballroom Champion, Jennifer Bagwell-Kay, who also choreographed the “Tango” part of this year’s Tanzpaar routine. Our Tanzpaar recently started taking lessons from Buddy Schwimmer of 5,6,7,8 Dance Studio. Buddy was the Choreographer for the dancing in the movie “American Graffiti.” Buddy’s son Benji Schwimmer was the winner of the 2006 season of popular reality TV competition “So You Think You Can Dance”, plus his niece Heidi (2006) and daughter Lacey (2007) have placed in the top four on the show. We are excited to have the opportunity to learn from such accomplished dancers. We currently have 14 dancers in the Prinzengarde: Funkenmariechen (soloist): Kirsten Walter, Dance Captain: Angela Kiesel, Tanzpaar (dance pair): Rob & DeeAnne Gunnemann, plus: Kurt Hauptmann, Mona Lübke, Gary Bonie, Jillian Carter, Matt Gunnemann, Letty Lenoir, Heidi Davis, Robert Claus, Vivian and Katy Ringen. Our dancers range in age from teens to 40’s, consisting mainly of students and working adults. Previous dance experience is not necessary to join, but lots of enthusiasm, and the willingness to learn and participate is required. For more information, contact: Rob & DeeAnne Gunnemann: 909-798-2426 (before 8:00 p.m. PST please), funtodancewith@yahoo.com The Prinzengarde of the Phoenix Club is famous for their acrobatic dancing and amazing choreography.
