A View from the Bridge
Wow! Where has the summer gone! I can’t believe we have already had our 26th Annual “Where it All
Began” Plant Jamboree in Algonac and the 4th Annual Antique Boat Show in St. Clair. By the time you read
this we will probably also have enjoyed the shows in Port Huron and Port Sanilac, and maybe Toledo, Gibraltar, Wambo, and a few more. It seems like it’s only been a couple of weeks since everyone was pulling off
the tarps and freshening up the paint and varnish.
Attendance seems to be down at some shows this year and I think it is because of fuel prices and
possibly over saturation. The show calendar is very full. A person can attend more than one boat show just
about every weekend. It comes down to supporting your local shows or choosing to sample others instead.
More than one member has come up to me and said how much they enjoyed going to a non-local show. They
didn’t have to do any work and were just able to enjoy the weekend.
However, attendance for our Algonac show was as strong as ever with over 90 boats registered. Fuel
prices did not deter skippers and the crowds were out in force. Directors and volunteers worked very hard
both in the planning stages and on show day to try to make everyone’s day enjoyable. Unfortunately, those
same volunteers, once again did not get to enjoy the show, as they were busy being gracious hosts. Our club
takes great pride in being one of the “must visit” shows in our area. Despite the lack of quality overnight accommodations and low water, attendance at Algonac has always been strong.
To continue to strive to provide such a large and diverse show we not only meet to critique ourselves and
entertain suggestions for improvement but begin planning for the following year within a week of the one
just concluded. This is an important tool to use while everything is still fresh in our memories. One of the
more important areas where improvement is needed is more volunteer help from other club members. If a
few more would give as little as two hours on show weekend all of our members would have time to enjoy
the show.
I am challenging the membership to step up. This is your club and your show. Let’s be the “Best That We
Can Be”. I will be reminding everyone all year. Mark your calendars for 2012. Looking forward to
seeing you there.

On The Cover
The cover boat is owned by Tim and Paula O’Brien of Warren Michigan. This fine 1922 Hacker Craft design
new boat was started from scratch five years ago in the basement of their home and was completed in their
garage the day before the Algonac Show of this year. All of the frame work was done in the basement and built
to be disassembled so it could be passed out through the basement windows piece by piece and
reassembled in the garage for completion, what a job!
She is a 21 foot long 63 inch beam beauty powered by a Chrysler 350 HP engine. Paula and Tim both put
tons of quality time together building this incredible boat and those of us who stopped by the house during its
creation understand what an undertaking this project was to complete. Nothing but the engine and upholstery
was farmed out, all else was done by Tim and Paula. Her name is
Sláinte, which is Gaelic for “good health”. What great artists these two
fine people are and one can only imagine the pride that must rush
through their minds when they turn the key and go for a ride.
They are proud to have this fine craft grace the cover of the
summer 2011 Channel Marker.

2011 Algonac Show Wrap-Up
The Michigan Chapter of the ACBS held the 26th annual Chris Craft Plant Jamboree “Where it all Began” Antique
and Classic Boat and Car Show on June 24th, 25th and 26th, 2011. A total of 94 antique and classic watercraft and 26
cars participated in the event. Lyman was the Marquee boat for this year’s show and 13 beautiful examples of these
lapstrake watercraft were displayed at the show. Although a little rain early in the day may have reduced the number of
boats docking on Friday, the weather cleared by afternoon, and there were still a significant number of boats that participated in the traditional Friday cruise of the St Clair Flats waterways.
Saturday morning was even busier than normal due to the majority of boats docking, and participants registering
for the show. We were joined this year by members of the Prop Riders APBA club that exhibited three beautiful classic
wood hydroplanes, and answered questions regarding the events of their 2011 racing season. The 12:00 noon flag raising
ceremony was conducted by the Algonac VFW, and highlighted by a flyover by a USCG helicopter. Once the boats
were secured in their show positions, approximately 30 club member volunteer judges got very busy for several hours
judging all of the outstanding boats that were entered in 15 ACBS classes. Although it was a very difficult job to pick
the best of the best, the presentation of first place and runner up awards was done at dock side commencing at about
1:30 Saturday. The special award presentations started at 3:30 in the main activity tent with announcement of all of the
class award recipients, and the presentation of the Best Owner Restored (first place and runner up), People’s Choice,
Pete’s Choice, Best Lyman and Best of Show. Car awards for Commodore’s Choice, Director’s Choice and People’s
Choice were also presented.
Sunday morning brought us perfect weather and flat water for the run to the Old Club for our annual brunch. After
a wonderful breakfast, Commodore Carl Garmhaus initiated the formal program with a note of thanks and recognition
to all of the participants and introduced our host, Pete Beauregard. Pete gave a short introduction of our speaker, Terry
Fiest, who made an excellent presentation regarding his impressive involvement in the Chris Craft Antique Boat Club,
chairman of the Mt. Dora/Tavares boat show, and chief judge for the Lake Tahoe boat show. He also complimented the
Michigan chapter on the Algonac show, stating that it is regarded as one of the top shows in the country.
I want to once again thank Pete and Carol Beauregard for the use of the Harbour Club Marina and their continuing
support of the show. I also want to thank our 30 show sponsors and numerous advertisers, our Michigan Chapter officers
and directors, the volunteer boat judges that worked so hard and did such a great job, and all of the many club members
that made the show such an enjoyable and successful event. I look forward to seeing you all in Algonac in 2012 when
we will do it again “Where it all Began”.

Attend New York Show
The 2011 Boat Show Calendars are unbelievable this year! Each weekend offers one or more opportunities at venues
from coast to coast to enjoy our antique and classic watercraft. Venturing away from your home port is always exciting,
so on July 15 John & Julia Gambill, Al & Margaret Herr, & Tim & Paula O’Brien packed up their boats and headed east
to Keuka Lake (one of the Finger Lakes) in Hammondsport, New York. Dick & Lucille Weaire also visited the show as
they traveled on their way to the East Coast. The setting was beautiful, as the lake was surrounded by thickly wooded
hills, and the charming town square was an easy walk from the show site. Great shops and the very important ice cream
store kept us coming and going!
Our hosts, the Wine Country Classic Boats Chapter, welcomed us with a well-planned weekend and were appreciative
of our traveling such a distance to attend their show. Events
started on Friday morning with a cruise on the lake and lunch
at the historic waterfront restaurant, The Switz. The day concluded with a Welcome Party at the Keuka Lake Yacht Club. Al
& Margaret’s Chris-Craft U-22 easily accommodated the six of
us, so we had a lovely evening boat ride to the event. There was
a beautiful table of hors d’oeuvres, a variety of wines to taste
from two of the plentiful local vineyards, and outstanding
desserts, too!
Show day on Saturday was sunny and warm with a great
turnout of spectators. Many brought their lawn chairs and
stayed for the day. The featured boat was Classic Fiberglass,
and was well represented with 16 entries. The total of 85 entries
included a variety of boats on land and in the water, including
Chris Craft, Century, Hacker, GarWood, and also an East Coast Pictured left to right: Dick & Lucille Weaire, John & Julia
Lobster Boat. Judging of the boats was done by ACBS profes- Gambill, Tim & Paula O’Brien, Al & Margaret Herr.
sionals, and utilized the 100 point system.
A unique feature that was great fun was the Boat Parade which closed the show Saturday afternoon. As each boat
passed in front of the spectators in the park, the owner, homeport and boat information were announced on a loudspeaker,
making us feel like celebrities!!
The Dinner and Awards Ceremony Saturday evening were held at The Glenn Curtiss Museum – a spectacular venue.
A native of Hammondsport, Glenn Curtiss was a man of many talents in the early 20th Century, most notably in the fledgling field of aeronautics. His accomplishments also included building bicycles, motorcycles, and even an innovative travel
trailer. Time was allotted for everyone to browse and enjoy the many, many displays, which were amazing. There was a
full-sized reproduction of the “June Bug,” which Curtiss designed, built and flew in 1908, as well as the V8-powered motorcycle that earned him the title “Fastest Man on Earth” in 1907 with a run of 136.4 mph. Fascinating! The evening concluded with the Awards Ceremony, and our Michigan contingent was well represented. John & Julia Gambill took honors
for the Best Classic Fiberglass Inboard, as well as Best of Show for their 1957 20’ Arenacraft Barracuda “Lida Rose.”
Al & Margaret Herr were awarded Best Chris-Craft for “Her’s,” a 1949 22’ Chris-Craft Sportsman. The Best Late Contemporary Award was won by Tim & Paula O’Brien for Slaínte, their 2011 replica of a 1922 21’ Hacker Runabout.
The weekend concluded on Sunday morning with a Regatta featuring a short course for wooden boats, a short course
for fiberglass boats, and a long course for wooden boats. This was followed by a delicious Chicken Barbecue with homemade side dishes and cookies presented by the local Boy Scouts – they outdid themselves and did a fine job.
This is what makes summertime so special. Nothing could be finer than traveling and boating with friends, as well
as meeting new friends and sharing good times in our Antique and Classic Boat Society.

Antique/Classic Boat Show
July 16, 2011
Spectators leisurely lined the boater-friendly floating docks of the sparkling, trim and well-ordered Charles F. Moore
Harbor in St. Clair, Michigan. The visitor’s view from any vantage point was “vintage”. Boat enthusiasts lingered at the
launch and each slip to inspect, admire and exclaim over the handsome lines and craftsmanship of meticulously restored
and detailed boats of former decades.
Onlookers were impressed to see that nearly 50% of the 40 boats registered in the show were cruisers, a phenomenon
unique to the St. Clair river region. Classic and antique runabouts, utilities and skiffs remained a core attraction. Of note,
too, was the number of Canadian owned boats, making this one of the few international shows in the country.
Coupled with Saturday’s boat show on marina grounds was an exhibition and tribute to the “Tin Can Tourists”. The
display featured an awesome array of restored camping and travel trailers replicating the road life in motoring days of
yesteryear.
Certainly, the huge success of this event was the result of a strong partnership of the Michigan Chapter of the ACBS
with the city of St. Clair which organized local merchants and agencies in support of the effort.

1933 ROBINSON SEAGULL 36 ft. POWERED BY V-12 SCRIPPS
ISABELLA - BUILT IN BENTON HARBOR, MI.
She is 36 ft. long, 9 ft. wide, commissioned as a commuter, lsabella was built for a service out of Mt. Clemens. A John
Hacker design, she carried twelve passengers from Mt. Clemens to Detroit and back again each day until W.W. II. The
U.S. Navy commandeered her for patrol duty, and painted her gray. Equipped with a machine gun and a siren, Isabella
patrolled the CAN.AM. border between Detroit and Mackinaw. After the war, lsabella's owner bought her back from
the Navy for one dollar. Gallons of stripper were needed to remove the gray paint, and return her back to original. ln
1947 she was purchased by a second owner (Louie) and spent the next 36 years at Kean's Detroit Yacht Harbor as a
pleasure craft. ln 1983, a third owner passed away before any restoration could begin. The spring of 1985 left her abandoned and up for auction. The current owner, Vaughan Hounslow, purchased Isabella at auction and rescued her from
the junk man. She was immediately made sea worthy and went on a twenty year program of three years of enjoyment
and one year of restoration. ln 2005, a major restoration process began, and was completed in spring 2011, leaving her
ready for more years of fun service. lsabella has two configurations, so top on, or top off, she is a tribute to the way
they did things in the past, and the craftsmen who built her. Vaughan, a fairly new member, was in the Algonac Boat
Show, Detroit Yacht Club, and St. Clair Boat show, winning many awards for his hard & fantastic work.

The Algonac Boat & Car Show was another great success, thanks to Greg Lewandowski & Roy
Schoehnerr and to all the other who did their part in making this a record show. We are getting new
faces each year, showing their boats, and enjoying being a Michigan Chapter member. One of them
was Bill Kerner, first time at the Algonac Show, with his beautiful Lyman. Bill is a cabinet maker by
trade and spent 3 years restoring this boat. He did not have to change much wood and ribs were in
good shape, but had to sand the hull to the bare wood. Bill got two awards for his hard, and good work
that day. Five new people joined the membership that day, making our club bigger and better each year.
Our membership now stands at about 360, and will be climbing.

2011 Pt. Sanilac Antique Boat Show Report
This third year for hosting the ACBS at our Lake Huron harbor was the best one yet! Even though registrations were
very slow, until just a few weeks before the show, we actually had 3 more than last year, for a total of 27.
The Poker Run was beautiful, out on the blue water with just a bit of chop, providing us with some great action photos
for next year’s promotion of our event.
Our Taste-of-Port Sanilac served 330 tastes that were very well received!
As the beautiful sky bled the colors of sunset, the VIP cruise departed filled with revelers enjoying our local wines and
specialty beers (next year’s cruise promises to sell out quickly).
The flow of viewers was smooth due to the layout set by Harbor Master Dave Marschall and the docking crew. Each
boater was able to have their own well and the freedom to take a short trip out on the open water was available.
The addition of the Miss America X and the display of vintage motorcycles to the vintage travel trailers drew a bigger
crowd this year, many of whom wanted to see displays on Friday morning even though the show didn’t start until 1pm.
The award’s ceremony was shortened but smoothly executed, despite the thunderstorm. If we had not had bad weather
on Saturday, we would have had a record crowd attending our show.
Special thanks to the Michigan Chapter of the ACBS, especially Elaine Mathis and Ann Guldemond who kicked in on
some last-minute help. We are grateful for the assistance in creating another very successful show!

2011 Commodore’s Tour
This year’s version of the Commodore’s tour was a smashing success! Eleven boats and thirty people made the trek up north
along I-75 to Indian River, Michigan. A “meet and greet” Welcome Party on Sunday night featured cheese, crackers, veggie tray,
wine, and other assorted beverages. Group tour polo shirts were passed out along with “goodie bags” including literature of the local
area, bottled water, and a large bag of animal crackers. Launch ramp directions and Monday’s itinerary were also reviewed.
Bright and early Monday morning we met at the ramp on the Indian River near the downtown district to launch. After everyone
was safely in we headed out single file east towards Cheboygan. After a 30-40 minute idle down the Indian River we broke out onto
beautiful Mullet Lake. With calm water and sunny blue skies we headed north around the perimeter of the lake. Everyone got up on
plane and had a nice ride enjoying the weather and the other boats around us in our group. Slowing down we entered the mouth of
the Cheboygan River and made the passage partway to the Cheboygan lock. Just past the Black River we turned around and retraced
our route back into Mullet Lake.
After another 30 minutes or so blowing out the carbon from the no wake zone speeds we stopped at Allen and Deb Willeys
summer cottage on the southeast shore of the lake for a late lunch. There was enough dock space to tie up some of the boats and the
rest were either beached on the wonderfully sandy beach or anchored out. The water was more than warm enough to wade in or take
a dip. Food and drink miraculously appeared as Art Armstrong and I cooked chicken breasts and burgers. Everyone pitched in to help
set up. After a great lunch under shade trees and the clean up taken care of, it was time to sit down by the water and enjoy each other’s
company.
Along in the later part of the afternoon it was time to head back to the ramp since
the journey would last about an hour. Once again we cruised up the Indian River providing a nice wooden boat parade for all the folks in their cottages along the way. Once the
boats were safely out of the water and on their trailers we all adjourned to our lodgings
to clean up and regroup for a meal together at an Indian River icon. The “Brown Trout
Restaurant” features a mixture of “up north”, rustic charm, complete with log construction, mounted game heads, and worn wooden floors. We were seated at two long trestle
style tables where everyone could enjoy a well stocked menu and great conversation. It
was a perfect ending to a wonderful day.
Day two found us once again at the launch ramp by 8:30 AM under sunny skies.
This time we headed west up the Indian River and out across the southern end of Burt
Lake. After a fast ride we slowed down to enter the mouth of the Crooked River, carefully
following the channel markers to avoid shallow areas. Crooked River is less inhabited in
many stretches so we were able to speed up once again on plane and slide the boats
around the corners, zig zagging up the river like water bugs. When we had to slow down
for residential no-wake areas we were able to view spectacular homes and interesting cottages on both sides of the river.
Arriving at a clam shell lock at the entrance to Crooked Lake, we locked through in three groups, everyone with their cameras
out snapping pictures of each other locking through. Shortly after starting out into Crooked Lake a storm line could be seen in the
distance. With white caps on the lake and black clouds coming our way we turned around and locked back through to the Crooked
River. A call on the VHF radio by Greg Lewandowski alerted us to a predicament with “Water Lily” so we all tied up at a small city
park to stretch our legs and determine his problem. It seems his shaft slipped back and caused the prop to nick the rudder requiring
a tow from John Gambill with one of his plastic boats. Of course pictures were taken of Greg and Marianne, their beautiful “woody”
obediently following behind on the end of John’s tow rope.
With a break in the weather and arrangements made to come back for “Water Lily” we were off once again. Heading back down
Crooked River we idled when we had to and planed when we could.
As we broke out into Burt Lake the sun came out and the clouds disappeared. We had a nice, smooth ride across since the lake
had lain down like glass. You could not have asked for calmer water.
A late lunch was planned at the Inn Between Bar and Grill on the Indian River in the heart of town. We were able to tie up at their
seawall and dine on the patio. Some of us also took the opportunity to walk across the street for one more Stroh’s ice cream and
waffle cone. I’m surprised they had any left since several trips were made by some of us over the course of the three days we were
there.
Even though we boated for over eighty miles we did not see everything there was to see. I think another trip some day would
allow for a more thorough exploration of the area.
I would like to thank each and every one of you who not only came along but pitched in to keep the work load light. I would especially like to thank Allen and Deb Willey for letting us use their beautiful cottage for a lunch stop and I would like to thank my wife
Susan who was unable to come with us but worked very hard in the planning stages to make the trip enjoyable for all.

“The Editor’s Corner”
Navigating the waters of life!
As a new day comes to us each morning, a new set of rules and lessons also comes with
it from time to time. How we set up our must do list is different for each and every one of
us. What really must be done this day, what’s number one, number two, number three etc.
I think the list can be simplified easily.
Number one, call or go see someone you love but haven’t taken time to contact and tell
them you love them, tell them they are important to you.
Number two, take time to do something good for someone else no matter how small it may
be, it makes you feel good.
Number three, look in the mirror and tell yourself each morning that you are a good person and do your best each
day to live up to it.
Number four, take time to smell the roses of life that were placed here for all of us to enjoy, get in your boat and
go for a ride even if it’s just for a few minutes, it takes the stress off and brings peace. If it’s snowing out, go for a walk
in it, and breath in that cool, fresh air, look up at the sky, and give thanks for another wonderful day.
It’s been a great summer, one of my very best, I hate seeing it come to an end and I really hope its been the same
for you.
Our fall dinner will be here before we know it, so place it on your to do list and make plans now to attend with
your old boat friends, a good time will be had by all. See you then.
