at the Waterline GLACIER LAKES CHAPTER VOLUME 11 ISSUE 3 The Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. July/August/September 2014 “Thank you so much for the invite to your recent show. Your show was the best one we've attended. We felt so welcomed. The setting was superb, as was the boat parade. You surely have a great thing going.” Bob & Sue House “Maid 'n '47” “Hail” of a Good Time! By Mark Walters and Photos Beth Lepping The 9th annual Madison Area Antique and Classic Boat Show (MAACBS) had a little of everything for 2014. There was great boating to the UW campus (navigating three lakes), beautiful sun for vitamin D intake, and some rare weather (hail!) to top off the festivities. As usual, the MAACBS was a unique boat show weekend for both boat owners and those coming to view the boats. Century, as the event’s featured boat, was a hit for 2014. Tommy Holmes (Century boat aficionado) was in his element with Pabst Blue Ribbon in hand, Century boats getting the show focus, and a three day holiday at the Leppings. As the sun pierced the horizon on Friday morning, one could tell the day of boating would be perfect. The light breeze, low humidity, and clear skies provided a glorious backdrop for the morning cruise. Thirty-two boats left Christy’s dock toward the state Capital and Lake Mendota. There were a few breakdowns along the way (to be expected) but the comradery and hospitality of the attendees helped the stranded owners secure their boats and continue on the journey. Circling around the Monona Terrace Convention Center and Capital was truly picturesque. Navigating through the Tenney Locks to Lake Mendota is always fascinating given the original structure was built in 1904. Once at the Goodspeed family pier on the UW—Madison campus, boat owners were corralled to the Memorial Union Terrace CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 IN THIS ISSUE MAACBS Boat Show............................page 1,4 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Glacier Lakes Anniversary Event............................page 3 Milwaukee River Cruise.......................................page 10-12 Chapter Board Meeting..............................................page 13 Minocqua Boat Show......................................................page 14-16 Boats for Sale.......................................................page 17-18 Advertisers (Support those who support us)...page 18-23 MEMBERSHIP FORM.............................................page 24 Glacier Lakes Chapter 10th Anniversary MARK YOUR CALENDAR Saturday November 22nd, 2014 at the aloft HOTEL Milwaukee Downtown SEE PAGE 3 “We’ll be putting on The Ritz” Officers and Directors 2013 Glacier Lakes Chartered by ACBS April 30, 2004 Commodore Emeritus-Frank Petran 1939-2011 Commodore – Rich Lepping ACBS Board of Directors/Marketing 1634 Sherman Avenue Madison, WI 53704 608-235-1707 richl@borderpatrolwi.com Vice Commodore -Mark Willis 18875 Black Forest Dr. Brookfield, WI 53045 Cell 262-389-0535 willismm@msn.com Secretary-Sue Rechcygl W286 N3082 Lakeside Rd. Pewaukee, WI 53072 414-573-2861 nancyfv444@aol.com from the Commodore WOW what a fantastic summer! Beth and I have had the pleasure of attending three great shows in the previous two months. First, we made our way up north to Minocqua; the show was held downtown at the Boathouse. There, we were greeted by an old friend Bill Hooper, who promptly put a drink in our hands, and we were off. The show includes a boat parade, people’s choice balloting, and of course, taking in a Friday night fish fry. Thanks to Al and Gordon, for putting on such a fine show. Over thirty boats were in the water, and of course, boats and cars on land rounded out the show. 1ST YEAR TERM DIRECTOR-Roberta Hegy N8772 Stone School Road East Troy, WI 53120 262-470-6181 rhegy@wi.rr.com The next was our own Madison show. Thanks to the entire committee, for putting on another well done show. This year, Madison featured Century Boats. The Century Clubs’s own Tommy Holmes , President of the CBC, came in for the weekend and handed out the best Century award on Saturday afternoon. We of course made new friendships and renewed others. The show started with a day on the water, visiting three of our Madison area lakes, a stop at UW’s Memorial Union, and finished the day with a great Wisconsin Fish Boil. Saturday held the show, with awards being handed out late in the afternoon. The Madison Show partners with the Clean Lakes Alliance, and we were able to contribute over $4,000 this year. A record 52 boats were registered and next year, we will be featuring Higgins Boats. The Pewaukee Boat Show celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Congratulations to the committee for ten great years. Friday night started out with a lovely reception at the home of Gary and Sue Rechcygl. Pete and Nancy Feichtmeier were in charge of cooking. Hard to believe Gary and Sue are giving up that view. Saturday morning, boats started coming in, and by the end of the morning they had over 40 boats. Vintage cars, antique bikes, artists, food and a beer tent greeted hundreds of spectators. The park like setting is a great venue, and once again, The Pewaukee group hit a home run! Mark your calendar for Saturday November 22nd. The location has changed to The aloft, downtown Milwaukee. See page 3. Final details are coming together, and I promise, it will be a nice way to start the next 10 years of our chapter’s history. Please attend and bring your friends. You can reserve your spot now. Special invitations will also show up soon. We are looking for a few more board members. As the chapter grows, we want to as well. At the summer board meeting, we approved adding two new board members. See page 13 for abreviated board minutes. If you have the time and want to get more involved, please contact of one of us and let us know. This is a fun group and it’s a way to give back to our hobby and chapter. Think about it! So, as the summer comes to a close, I want to thank you for a great time, great boat shows, and most importantly, your friendship. We have had a wonderful time with each and every one of you. I hope to see you in Lake Geneva or the ACBS International in Skaneateles. Lunch on the Tripp Commons deck (overlooking Memorial Union Terrace) was spectacular with a varied selection of food and a beer list rivaling any brew pub. As usual, the Terrace staff did an exceptional job catering to our needs. Enjoying beverages on the Terrace is always one of the many relaxing parts of the journey. By mid-afternoon, all boats were back underway toward Lake Waubesa. It is always a fulfilling moment when a spectator along the cruise waves and compliments the boats (“what a beauty!”). Skippers traveled at their own pace backdown the Yahara Chain with some participants stopping to jump in the cool, refreshing water. Mother-Nature turned out a nice day for Saturday’s show. Fifty-two boats were on display on both land and sea (largest MAACBS turnout). People flocked to Christy’s Landing to view the boats, take in some “live” music, and enjoy the beautiful day. The traditional “start your engines” feature of the show allowed the enthusiasts to actually see and hear the boats (more than just trailer “queens”). It was a glorious day for all who participated in the show. As a result of the show, we raised over $5,000 for the Clean Lakes’ Alliance (CLA). CLA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of the water quality for the Yahara Chain of Lakes. The Friday cocktail hour had a share of drama. A large thunderstorm advanced from the north and hit Christy’s right after everyone had their boats secured for the night. Many looked in horror as the rain turned to hail for about fifteen minutes (yes, hail!). Luckily the hail was only of a pea-size variety and no damage was done. The rest of the night went off in spectacular fashion including the 50’s style fish-boil under the tent in the sand. The night was topped off with some revelry inside Christy’s. One of the boat owners felt the need to belt-out a rendition of Adele with perfect pitch. Unfortunately those offering a vocal accompaniment did not have the same talent. A huge thank you goes out to all the MAACBS sponsors and show planners. Without these individuals the show would not have been such a success! Next year is the 10th anniversary of the MAACBS. Higgins will be the featured boat. Look for some new show features for the celebration. Who knows, given the weather over the last decade, we could even see snow! The weather was, I can safely say, spectacular. Thirteen boats and nearly thirty people signed in for the cruise. After dealing with some of the required mechanical problems I commented that if I would gather up all the pictures of classic boat owners standing around a stricken boat making “constructive suggestions” that I could fill a scrap book. Later that day it dawned on me that these are some of the things that I enjoy the most about the chapter. After a delayed start we toured The Milwaukee, and The Menomonee Rivers with a few stops along the way for fluid equalization. There are a number of interesting sites along both sides of these waterways, brew pubs, luxury condominiums and one very interesting sight concerning the replacement of a distributor on a classic wood boat. Last but not least we entered the Kinnickinnic River. A short way up the river was our lunch stop at the Horny Goat Marina and Brew Pub. They did a fine job handling the group with enough dock space and we were served very efficiently without any long wait times. We told Wil that a picture of the group from across the river would really be great. He refused to swim across the river saying that it may damage his camera so Todd gave him a ride over in his boat. I don’t think this was necessary he could have just held the camera over his head. Some of the group returned for haul out and some cruised south to South Shore Yacht Club for some additional refreshments and in one case a short but very cold swim. A great time was had by all. A special thank you to Ken Bourgeois for organizing this great event. Thank you to Marc Danloff for taking some great pictures at the Waterline PAGE 10 Milwaukee River Cruise Saturday July 19, 2014 Milwaukee Cruise Participants Dan & Laura Holdmann John & Erin Fischer Brian Kramer & friends Don Emigholz & Friends Scott Bruesewitz George Plamondon Bob Darling Marc Daniloff John & Pam Bass Gary Berg & Jane Larson at the Waterline PAGE 11 Jeff McClellan Ted & Cindy Cartner Wil & Mary Vidal Ken & Gerda Bourgeois Milwaukee River Cruise Saturday July 19, 2014 at the Waterline PAGE 12 Glacier Lakes Board Meeting, July 1, 2014 The meeting was held poolside at the beautiful home of Rich & Roberta Hegy, who graciously provided us with delicious food and refreshments. After a tour of Roberta’s workshop featuring her Glen L Torpedo under construction, Commodore Rich Lepping called the board meeting to order at 6:45 PM. THank you Rich and Roberta. ABBREVIATED MINUTES Board Members Present: Marc Daniloff, Nancy Feichtmeier, Roberta Hegy, Rich Lepping, Cliff Meuhlenberg, Sue Rechcygl, Jack Schneiberg, Howard Schneider, Mark Willis and newsletter editor, Wil Vidal. Financial Report: Nancy reported that the balance in the general fund is $5,358.98. Rich asked about cash flow, specifically how dues income from ACBS arrives. Nancy said it comes in spurts, with most in the beginning of the calendar year. Wil explained that originally, all members had a January due date, but recently, membership due dates were when they joined ACBS. Rich stated the need to build up the treasury for contingencies and educational programs. The two boat shows will help by contributing 10% of their proceeds to the Glacier Lakes general fund starting this year. 501(c)(3) Progress: Jack reported that he will hear back from the IRS the next day. They realize that we have been waiting a long time. There is a question whether they regard us as a 501(c)(7) which is more of a social club, or a 501(c)(3), which is better for tax deductibility. We will revisit the matter of the boat donation after we get confirmation on the status. Regarding the audit of the chapter and boat show books, Paul Brown is currently working on it, and Jack will meet with him the following week. Pewaukee boat show August 16: Wil displayed this year’s boat show posters, and board members took some to post at area businesses. Added this year is a Friday night party at Rechcygl’s with Feichtmeier’s handling the food. Madison boat show August 2-3: This year’s feature boat is the Century. So far they have 4-5 Centuries coming, including one from Nebraska. They have 16 registered boats and more that indicated they are coming. Friday’s tour of lakes includes lunch at UW Memorial Union Terrace, a stop at a “lake house” for cocktails, and a Friday night fish fry at Christy’s. There will be live music Friday night and Saturday during the show. Discussion of the Kit Boat: Wil reported that we are keeping the kit boat. The latest issue of the publication “30 West” featured a new organization called “All Hands Boatworks Inc.”, an educational boat building program for young people in the Milwaukee area who are challenged by socioeconomic and educational hurdles. Wil will contact them and offer them the kit boat, possibly have them bring the boat to one of our shows when complete, and possibly donate money to them in the future. A suggestion was made to invite a representative of their organization to the fall banquet. Jack made a motion to proceed with this plan, and Marc seconded. All approved. Fall Banquet: The “10th Anniversary Gala” will be held on Saturday evening, November 22, 2014. (Location has changed as of these minutes.) Members of the planning committee are Rich Lepping, Jane Larsen, John Baas, John Baumann, Gayle Ritter and Wil Vidal. More are welcomed to join this committee. There will be hors d’oeuvres and a sit down dinner, awards, recognitions, and entertainment, all for $50/person. We are asked to “gussy up” for this event. ACBS Update: Wil and Rich attended a recent ACBS meeting held at The Ridges Resort, Lake Chatuge, Hiawassee, GA. ACBS has a new membership database, including renewal, member and boat info, thanks in large part to Matt Byrne’s efforts. Also, ACBS voted that all boats 25 years old or older, regardless of hull material, will be welcome at shows and will have a judging classification, including Best of Show. This should help with ACBS membership retention. Rich stated that this has been in the works for 6-7 years. Also, ACBS has changed their governance policies to work more like a business than a volunteer organization. Peter Stephens was hired by ACBS as executive director, a new title. ACBS Awards: Rich and Wil have submitted nominations for (1) Newsletter of the Year, and (2) Chapter of the Year. The winners will be announced at the ACBS Annual Celebration Banquet in Skaneateles, NY on Sept. 20, 2014. Increasing Size of Board: Rich stated that while business boards of directors are getting smaller, volunteer organizations’ boards have been getting larger, in order to get more members involved. Wil stated that the fall banquet is the time for new officers to be elected. The current list of officers/directors was discussed. The commodore serves for 2-years at his option. A suggestion was made that the membership chair position should be a board member. It was also suggested that we add another 3rd year term director and another director-at-large. Wil and Rich will solicit candidates for a director-at-large at the Minocqua show the end of July. These changes to the board should be stated in an Addendum to the By-Laws. Rich asked Sue to write an Addendum to add one more director-at-large and an additional 3rd year term director. The addendum should also reflect the change in our reporting year end to Dec.31st, and also our change in dues last year. This should be sent out by midOctober, to be ratified at the fall banquet. Commodore Lepping adjourned the board meeting at 8:07 PM, and thanked Rich and Roberta for hosting. Respectfully Submitted, Sue Rechcygl, Chapter Secretary at the Waterline PAGE 13 22nd Annual Minocqua Boat Show Story provided by Dean Acheson for Al Hanley Writer Special thanks to Reg Down, known as “Texx” on The WoodyBoater website The rich heritage of antique and classic wooden boats was enjoyed by large crowds of visitors to the 2014 Minocqua Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show held this past July 25-27 on the famous Minocqua Chain of Lakes. The ample piers at The Boathouse in downtown Minocqua accommodated 37 of the 46 boats that were registered this year. Numerous models and sizes of boats gave visitors a history lesson in these magnificent vessels that once plied the waters of resort communities across the Northwoods in large numbers. The familyfriendly event saw plenty of cameras as visitors recorded their favorite restored boat. The musical duo of Brett & Frisk entertained both boat show participants and visitors over the weekend. Admission to the event is free and helps draw families. Boat owners and their guests were able to cruise the seven-lake chain totaling 5,700 acres and past historic boathouses and homes that date back three quarters of a century and more. Many of the owners also took part in the boat parade Friday night just before the Min-Aqua Bats’ water ski show. In addition to the moored boats, there were wooden boats, canoes and even “woodie” cars parked on land in front of The Boathouse. This was the 22nd annual show held to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis Society of Wisconsin, which uses the money for research and direct services for thousands of people with MS. This year the group raised more than $10,500 for this outstanding cause. Mother Nature dampened Sunday’s attendance, but when the rain stopped the spectators came out for the final showing and the awards program. David Richardson of Sheboygan took home the Captain’s Choice as “Best of Show.” Wil Vidal of Pewaukee fame received the “People’s Choice” Award. at the Waterline PAGE 14 22nd Annual Minocqua Boat Show at the Waterline PAGE 15 2014 Minocqua Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show WINNERS People’s Choice Wil & Mary Vidal – 22’ 1940 Chris Craft Sportsman Captain’s Choice “Best of Show” David Richardson – 22’ 1929 Chris Craft Cadet Best Century Dave Bortner – 21’ 1968 Century Coronado Best Pre-War Chris Craft Dr. Wafik Hanna 19’ 1942 Chris Craft Barrel Back Best Post-War Chris Craft – Utility Perry Edwards 16’ 1947 Chris Craft Rocket Best Post-War Chris Craft – Runabout Angel Levin 20’ 1948 Chris Craft Custom Best Classic Fiber Glass Ken & Robin Greger 14’ 1955 Larson Playboy Best Non-Powered Boat Winchester Boat Works Best Antique or Classic Wood Boat Eric & Kathy Moberg 19’ 1958 Streblow “Rebel” Best Outboard Doug & Linda Stone 17’ 1954 Peterborough Seafarer at the Waterline PAGE 16 BOATS FOR SALE H BOATS FOR SALEH BOATS FOR SALE 1950 Century Resorter 427 Chevy Nixon Marine Conversion Velvet Drive. $4,200.00 262-567-6576 1956 SwitzerCraft Shooting Star.
