Tom and Linda Krumland purchased Roswell Toyota in 1997. Starting with only 12 employees, Tom’s vision of “Treat the customer’s the way we would want ourselves to be treated” began to take shape immediately. Now, over 12+ years later, Roswell Toyota employs over 75 dedicated men and women whom all share the same vision. Due to the success of the business, a brand new 40,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility was built in 2005 under the belief of “The Best for the Best.” Krumland Auto Group employs over 125 people at its four dealerships; three, of which, are located in Roswell – Roswell Toyota-Scion, Roswell Honda and Roswell Hyundai. The fourth, Carlsbad Imports, brings the Krumland philosophy a bit further south. One of Toyota’s primary goals is to emphasize the entire ownership experience. We want to help ensure that our customers are satisfied not only at the time of purchase, but as long as they own their vehicle. Offering top quality cars and trucks is, of course, the first step - but only the beginning. Toyota dealerships strive to match the quality of our products with the finest service in the industry. With its certified technicians that service all makes and models, many with 25+ years of Toyota experience, its professional sales staff and friendly office team, Roswell Toyota-Scion is the dealership made for the new consumer. They are very eager to be more involved in the operations of the chamber. The US census is taken every ten years. 2010 is the year of the census. It behooves everyone to be partners and help convey to our community the importance of participating in this event and ensure no one is left uncounted. The census directs the allocation of billions of dollars in government funding. The Leadership Roswell class of 30 participants, under the able guidance of Rick Kraft, is to start on September 18 at the chamber building. They will be served a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, and the trimmings. Some of the chamber members are volunteering to do the grilling and help with the occasion. This is the 27th year for this program. It has been a huge success and I am sure this year will be no exception. As you walk by some of the grocery stores, the aroma of green chili being roasted will tickle your taste buds. The green chili crop looks good this year. That is good news to the farming economy. Please look for notices of the upcoming Business After Hours, as well as various ribbon-cutting events. The Business After Hours at Roswell National Bank in August was outstanding. The next Business After Hours will be at Prime Source Mortgage on September 17 at 5:00 pm. I hope we will see lots of people there. The county fair took place in July. The New Mexico State Fair and the Eastern New Mexico State Fair will be taking place shortly. Young people participating learn some valuable lessons, including responsibility, citizenship, pride in what they accomplish, and the thrill of competition. The junior livestock sale is the culmination of many, many hours of hard work and determination. Animals have to be given a regular daily diet. Exercising the animals and training them to pose is all a part of getting the animals ready for the fair. Leathercraft, sewing, photography, scrapbooking, baking and gardening are a few of the events that both juniors and adults can enter at the fair. is always growing. This year’s recipients, “Sages of the Southeast” are not only two of the major role players of establishing the Historical Museum and Archives for Roswell and the Historical Society, but have made themselves fixtures in the community due to their constant efforts to make Roswell and the surrounding area a better place to live. Arthur Robert McQuiddy was born in Sedalia, Missouri in 1918. After serving as a Naval aviator during World War II, he moved to Roswell in 1946 to become the editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch. Lea: From Confederate Guerrilla to New Mexico Patriot. The National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration awarded Elvis the 2004 American Cowboy Culture Award in Western History. This could not have been possible without the tremendous community support we have received and the faithful customers we continue to provide service for. In the current state of the economy it is more important than ever for all of us to take an active position in Customer Satisfaction. Mr. Krumland has stated in the past that he has the fortunate opportunity to sign employee’s checks, but it is the customer who makes the checks what they are. The job 8 National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week 2009 is a big event! More than 5 million young people in over 60 countries are expected to celebrate during October 18-24. The premise of CC! Week is to have fun, but the message is to strive for good character at all times in every situation. Neighborhoods and schools hold assemblies, stage parades, and host essay contests to galvanize citizens around their most important year-round task: teaching young people the Six Pillars of Character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship). There’s a lot to celebrate with CHARACTER COUNTS! This year’s week long Chaves County observance will include activities each day, from a tour and presentation to elementary students by our board members of each of the six pillars of character permanently displayed at the Roswell Zoo, to recognizing area public servants through the Honor the Badge: Building and Upholding the Public Trust program, sponsored by Pioneer Bank and Sprint Sports Rehabilitation Clinic, now part of our National Character Counts! week observance. Additionally, informational meetings with representatives from throughout Chaves County regarding this year’s competitions for National IN CHAVES COUNTY Character Counts! Week ‘09 (October 18-24) have been held with awards for area young people from preschool through college in three distinct categories; Essay, Poetry, and Art. Each category will mirror the National Character Counts! Essay Contest “Foundations for Life” based on maxims or famous sayings. Presentations will be made to all winners Thursday, October 22nd, during the National Character Counts! Night Super Celebration at Roswell High School in the Commons Area beginning at 6 p.m. Our Character Counts! in Chaves County Athlete Recognition Program, sponsored by Read & Stevens, Inc., got underway this month as coaches from throughout the county recognize the athlete in his or her program who best exemplifies the six pillars of character throughout the ‘09/’10 school year. Additionally, the “Pursuing Victory With Honor” Coaches Recognition Program enters its eighth year as Character Counts! in Chaves County continues to identify and honor coaches of character throughout our county. Sponsored by Prime Source Mortgage and The Roswell National Bank, winning coaches receive valuable packages at the conclusion of the Fall, Winter and Spring Sports campaigns. We have many other activities planned for the calendar year 2009/2010, all which, hopefully, will positively impact people of all ages in all walks of life. With the continued support of everyone in Chaves County we know Character Counts! In Chaves County will continue to establish and encourage those values which are recognized by all; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Allow me to introduce myself for those that I have not met. My name is Dorrie Faubus McCarty. I am a Roswell Cheerleader. This is the finest place to live as far as I am concerned. We have fabulous weather, great people, and a giving, loving community that has been there for me every step of the way. First, let me thank those of you that were so welcoming with cards, flowers, plants and well wishes. We have and are making changes everyday at your Chamber. I’m sure you will be proud of these changes. This is your Chamber of Com- merce, and you- our members, are the life blood of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce. We have several seminars coming up to aid our business community in their day to day battles to make their businesses successful. Your board of Directors is a very energetic group of business professionals that give freely of their time to help me make your Chamber a place you can be proud to belong to. Whether you are a long time member, or a brand new member, I would like to thank you for putting your trust in the Chamber. New committees have been formed, and they include members of your board of Directors. They will come together regularly to hopefully meet your needs. I want to urge you to come by the office, call, or write to let us know your concerns; or to give us a thumbs up if you feel we are moving in the right direction. The staff is at your service. Our office manager has been with the Chamber for many years. Most of you have had the opportunity to meet Glenna Roark at one of the past Chamber events. Beatriz C. Vidales is our part time employee who is helping out in the afternoons, and working on her degree at ENMU-R. The newest member of the team, the one most of you will come in contact with first either by phone or when you walk in the door is Aletha Whitley. Please call on any of us at any time. I assure you, we will do our very best to serve your needs. Chile-Cheese Festival Main Street held the sweet aroma of roasted chile as MainStreet Roswell hosted the annual Chile-Cheese Festival this past weekend. No matter what your taste, you were bound to find something of interest (including several varieties of chile). Arts and crafts, ristras, family activities, chile roasting and so many more activities were to be found - including bus tours to Leprino Foods! Graves Farms was on hand with plenty of colorful ristras. Vendors had many unique items - as well as fresh fruits and vegetables - including chile. The smell of roasted chile filled the aire at the festival. Pick your chile (hot or mild) and they roasted it on the spot. 11 Jeff Smith, Kurt Gass and all the great people at Prime Source Mortgage hosted Business After Hours for September. They didn’t let the muchneeded drizzle deter them from providing great grilled burgers and hotdogs. After everyone had there fill of great food, PrimeSource handed out some great, football related, door prizes. Don’t forget to join us at our next Business After Hours at Krumland Auto Group. What’s a little rain? PrimeSource still provided some great grilled food! Kurt Gass hands out the first door prize an awesome mini cooler! RISD Superintendant Mike Gottlieb accepts his door prize from Kurt. Glenna and Aletha man (or should we say woman) the table. The inauguration of our Los Angeles flight marks a new beginning for Southeast New Mexico opening the door to the World! The very first flight arrived on August 25 from LAX and took off the next morning with both flights carrying over 70% passengers. With your continued support, we hope to extend this flight beyond the end of the year and perhaps even add one or two more flights per week. Our relationship with American Eagle remains very strong. On Sunday, September 20, 2009, a group of dignitaries from Southeast New Mexico participated in the LAX Celebration flight. The group departed Roswell in the early morning to arrive in Los Angeles for a breakfast reception at Café del Rey in Marina del Rey. Good job, ladies! 15 RCLT is currently in the midst of a gifting campaign to raise funds for the renovation of their future home at Hobbs and S. Union, the former Park Twin Cinema. The property was purchased in 2007 for $300,000. The current mortgage balance is $91,000 and the architect’s preliminary drawings are completed and paid for. Donors are being sought to sponsor the naming rights for various components of the new theater. These range from $150,000 to name the theater down to $5,000 to name the Office. See the September 23rd issue of Roswell Daily Record for a complete list. We need to raise at least $200,000 of the $500,000 goal to begin renovations. That is the amount necessary to make minimum improvements necessary to obtain a “Certificate of Occupancy”. With the move to the new theater, RCLT will be able to improve its service to the community by expanding the scope and variety of live theater and entertainment. RCLT will also offer more training and acting opportunities for the youth of the area, and will continue to serve as a medium where interested persons may be involved in live theater as an avocation. Singers from throughout the United States will gather to form a 300-400-voice choir for the performance with Mr. Ellingboe. According to Mr. Fuss, the choir will spend many hours in rehearsal preparing the REQUIEM. Additionally, the choir will be busy raising the needed funds to underwrite this once-in-alifetime experience. To commemorate the evening and the choir’s trip to Carnegie Hall, renowned local artist, Dorothy Peterson, has done an original watercolor design for the program cover. Fifty signed and numbered prints of this stunning artwork will be available for purchase during intermission and following the performance. The choir greatly appreciates the generous and enthusiastic support of our community and your attendance at “From Broadway to Carnegie Hall,” their first fundraising effort. The photos on this page are from one of their fundraising events - an entertaining show, emceed by Rod Schumacher and Steve Wolfe, September 27th at Pearson Auditorium. Performers from throughout Roswell provided a great afternoon of entertainment. If you would like to donate to their effort to perform at Carnegie Hall, please contact First United Methodist Church at 622-1881. 17 20 9 0 s d i K T he t ForGeolf Tournamen Date Time Spring River Golf Course Oct. 24, 2009 Saturday Oct. 24, 2009 8:00am, Shotgun Start Place Spring River Golf Course 1612 W Eighth Roswell, NM 88201 Entry Deadline Thursday Oct. 22, 2009 Formal Best Ball 2-man teams Awards Reception Will follow the tournament in the Pavilion For more info, Contact: Great prizes! * Hole in one * Longest Drive * Longest Put * Closest to the Pin * 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed teams Cost: Cost of $65 includes; range fee, cart, and range balls. This year’s theme: Expectation + Opportunity = Full Participation. This year’s theme for National Disability Employment Month captures the vital role that expectations play in our successes as individuals and as a society. We must ensure that both people with disabilities and their employers expect that they will fully participate in our workplaces. Such an expectation alone, however, is not enough. They must also have opportunity. People with disabilities need access to a full range of employment choices to maximize their talents. a registration form on the flyer. Already, we benefit from the incredible array of talent they bring to our workplaces. But we must raise the bar, we must create the inexorable expectation that people with disabilities will contribute in every way to our economic successes. Only by nurturing this expectation and providing people with disabilities with unlimited employment opportunities, can we all benefit from their talents.” –Kathy Martinez aaDisability Employment Awareness Month October 26 – 27, 2009 Educating the Community about Disability Issues and Promoting Employment Opportunities for job seekers.
