Click here News From The Drake House www.thedrakehouse.org A Note of Recognition We recently hosted our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner to recognize and thank the many people and partners that have participated with The Drake House and The Drake Closets this past year. Over 400 invitationswere sent to the most important friends of our organization: our volunteers. Last year alone, we measured over 14,000 hours of volunteer service and we expect to exceed that number in 2016. As we are celebrating our tenth year of hosting families in our program, we are happy to recognize the following who have worked side by side with our small staff, to ensure that our mothers, their children, their private apartment, the grounds and the activity center are attended to with the upmost respect! LGE Community Outreach Foundation 5k Run/Walk Kathy Swahn Executive Director 8:00 AM Barrett Summit, Kennesaw Our Families June 11, 2016 "Can a family come back to The Drake House, if they are in need again?" is a question we frequently get asked. In the early days the answer was easy, as the situation had not presented itself yet! However, in August of 2015, we decided to readmit a family who had a brief stay in 2010. At that time, the rigors of the program and the need to be totally transparent was too much to bear for Alice. She voluntarily exited after 4 weeks, with her 2 young sons. Times continued to be hard for this family, until Alice re- contacted us to see if they could come back. "I made a mistake", she stated, when asking to be considered again for the program. She participated in an intake interview, followed by a long discussion of the program goals and expectations. Alice insisted that she was ready to receive the blessings of the program and do what she needed to do for her sweet boys, now in middle school. An Evening Under the Stars: The Drake House 10th Anniversary 6:00 - 10:00 PM Hodge Farm, Milton June 14, 2016 Cruise the World 4th Annual Fashion Show 5:30 - 9:00 PM UPS Global Headquarters Sandy Springs Alice soon got employment in place, and even added a second work-from-home job to increase her ability to earn. She and the boys regularly attended the life skills classes, and we gently worked together to identify goals and work toward self-sufficiency. The family exited the program in February into independent housing, equipped with the knowledge and savings needed to move forward. They also left with something else; the trust and comfort of knowing that others care for their family and donated generously to support them in their time of need. 12th Annual Miss Mary's Ice Cream Crankin' What's New in the Teen Center? Talking How You Can Make a Difference August 21, 2016 2:00 - 4:00 PM Roswell Square, Roswell Give a Mother the Gift of Transportation Sticks! The kids participated in an art-in-motion session which featured learning about and creating their own talking sticks. Talking sticks are instruments that are used by a group or a leader that is a symbol of authority or the right to speak in public. They learned that many years ago, indigenous tribes us ed talking sticks to pass around the tribes that would allow a member the right to speak uninterrupted. Their speaker gave each teen the right to speak about their life and what the past year had been like for them. Many of the teens opened up and honestly shared their triumphs and troubles. They were taught the very important lesson of listening with intention and the right to be heard and express themselves. The teens made their own talking sticks and encouraged to share this new concept with their families to introduce this new style of communication. A great lesson and super fun art activity !
