NCA Finals
June 12-16, 2013
Welcome to
the first annual
National Cattledog
Association
National Finals at
the Flying Diamond
Ranch in Steamboat
Springs, Colorado.
The National Cattledog Association (NCA)
Finals will feature four different classes of
dogs running on two fields over five days.
Each class will have two preliminary runs
and a final round. The dogs with the highest
cumulative score from the preliminary
runs move up to the finals. The National
Champion will be awarded to the teams with
the highest cumulative score in all three runs.
120+
The Finals this year will include over 120
dogs, run by 54 different handlers from 18
states and Canada.
4
The
Courses
Each class will have a different course to run. In the
preliminary runs, competing teams will be working 3 head of cattle, set
several hundred yards away from where the handler and dog must stand
to begin, behind the designated Handler Line. First, the dog is sent out to
gather the stock, and bring them back across the Handler Line. From there,
the dog must direct the stock through a series of panels or obstacles, laid
out in a specific order. Each set of obstacles must be entered in a specific
direction. The course is timed and each category has a time limit. During
certain portions of the course, the handler must stay behind the Handler
line, directing the dog to move the stock from there. In other sections of the
course, the handler may move around the course to assist the dog in putting
the stock through an obstacle. The handler is not allowed to enter or even
reach into an obstacle to assist the dog.
The stakes increase for the Final Round

in each class. In the Open Class, two

groups of 3 head of cattle will be set
out in different corners of the field. The
dog must gather both groups and work

Trialing
Terminology
Outrun
This is when the dog is first sent to gather the stock. The dog
goes out to one side or the other in an arc, coming up behind the
stock in a position to bring them to the handler.
Lift
This is the moment when the stock first begin to move after the
dog has completed the outrun.
Fetch
This is when the dog is bringing the stock to the handler.
Drive
This is when the dog is moving the stock away from the handler.
Handler Line
This is the line that the handler must stand behind when the dog
is sent to gather the stock.
Retries
All obstacles may be retried as often as the handler chooses.
Daylighting
When the stock are to enter an obstacle from a particular
direction, if they enter the wrong way, they will need to go
through the obstacle all the way and exit the obstacle before
they can be put through the correct way. They need to exit the
obstacle far enough that there is “daylight” between the stock
and the obstacle before they can proceed.
Remixing
If only a few head complete an obstacle, the handler may decide
to retry that obstacle in order to earn more points. If the head
that has not completed the obstacle is still separate from the
others, the handler may choose to put that one animal through
and earn points for that animal. However, if the stock “remix”––in
other words, if the head that completed the obstacle mix with
those who have not, then the score for that obstacle goes back
to zero, and whatever points are earned on the retry will be the
score for that obstacle.
6
Commonly Used
Commands
Most handlers at the Finals will use
a combination of voice and whistle
commands. Some of the most commonly
used commands include:
Away to me
(or just Away) This command is used
to direct the dog to flank in a counterclockwise direction around the stock.
Come Bye
This is the command for the clockwise
flank.
Walk Up
This means the dog should walk in a
straight line to the stock.
Lie Down
(or just Down) Means the dog should lie
down.
Stand
This command means that the dog
should stop moving, but should stay on
its feet rather than lie down.
Look Back
This is a command used when the dog
needs to turn and look back behind
itself, as there are more stock there to
be gathered.

VOLUNTEERS
Thank you to our volunteers, we could
not do the event without your support.
Say hello to the Routt County Cattle Women, they will
be wrangling at the event.
RCCW is a community-based organization that
supports the beef industry through education,
outreach and marketing. This volunteer organization
educates the public of the importance the beef
industry has in every day lives and in maintaining our
western heritage.

any age. Once a dog or handler has competed in
the Open class, s/he is not eligible to run in the
Intermediate class.
Nursery
This class is defined by the age of the dog, 30
months or younger, born on or after October
1st, 2009. Some Nursery dogs may also be
competing in the Open class.
Intermediate
This is a class for handlers who have never run in
Open. It is defined by the team of handler and
dog.
Horseback
This class will have the handlers mounted on
horseback. These will be handler/dog teams that
are at the Open level.
