Perutusan
Timbalan Pengerusi/
Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan
Dear fellow Bousteadians,
Staf Boustead yang dihargai,
The third quarter has been a busy time for us, as once
again we have made our mark on Malaysia’s corporate
scene. We have grown from strength to strength in
our ventures by always being on the quest for new
opportunities and talent.
korporat negara. Kita semakin kukuh berkembang dalam segala
usaha niaga kita di mana kita sentiasa berusaha mencari peluangpeluang perniagaan dan bakat baru.
While continued focus on our victories has proven to be
a motivating factor, we should always keep a holistic view
in mind. Our concentration should be on how to acquire
greater achievements and a higher rate of productivity.
Walaupun tumpuan berterusan terhadap kejayaan telah terbukti
menjadi faktor pendorong, kita perlulah sentiasa berfikir secara
menyeluruh. Kita seharusnya memberi tumpuan tentang bagaimana
produktiviti.
One of the milestones that we achieved during this quarter
is the privatisation of Al-Hadharah Boustead REIT. We
established Boustead REIT as the first Islamic plantationbased real estate investment trust back in 2007. It remains
today as the only Islamic plantation REIT in Malaysia. Now,
with this landmark transaction, Boustead REIT will be the
first REIT in Malaysia to be privatised.
However, this is not our only achievement this quarter, as
we have seen solid contributions by our other Divisions as
well. Namely, the Property Division’s 38% increase in profit
in the previous quarter, which was largely due to the sale
of a corporate lot in Mutiara Damansara. Unencumbered
by the legacy projects, the Heavy Industries Division
also showed an improvement in profit. Meanwhile, the
Trading and Industrial Division recorded an increase in
profit, primarily due to a strong performance by BHPetrol.
Walau bagaimanapun, penswastaan ini bukanlah semata-mata
pencapaian kita pada suku ketiga tahun ini. Kita turut memperolehi
In light of these positive developments, I would like
to extend my appreciation to all Bousteadians for their
continuing loyalty and contributions. The participation
of every individual is important and significant, whether
large or small, because we want to move forward as a
Group. By doing this together and maintaining our focus,
I am sure we will be able to accomplish even more. With
that in mind, I thank you for your continued efforts and
commitment.
Berdasarkan perkembangan-perkembangan positif ini, saya ingin
merakamkan penghargaan kepada semua staf Boustead atas
kesetiaan dan sumbangan mereka yang berterusan. Peranan setiap

Group Human Capital Management
Departmental Retreat to Terengganu
T
he Group Human Capital Management Department
(GHCM) of Boustead Holdings Berhad recently
took some time off from their busy schedule for a
departmental retreat to Terengganu where we took the
opportunity to stay at The Royale Aryani. The Royale
Aryani, managed by the Group’s own Boustead Hotels and
Resorts Sdn. Bhd., is located in Merang, approximately
40 km from Kuala Terengganu. With its traditional design
and concept influenced by the Grand Court Civilisation
of the Javanese-Majapahit Kingdom and the Ancient
Northern Sukhotai Kingdom of Thailand, we felt like we
had taken a step back in time as we stepped into the
beachfront resort.
Our activities during the departmental retreat included a river
cruise along Sungai Terengganu with its unique sights along
the river such as the fishermen’s boats and villages, boat
building activities and Kuala Terengganu’s famous icon, Masjid
Kristal. We also braved a climb to other local sights such as
Bukit Puteri, a historical site which was once used as a fortress
in the olden days and still houses some historical remnants.
As Terengganu is popular for its batik production, an educational tour
to Noor Arfa Craft Complex was also arranged where we were given the
opportunity to observe the intricate process of batik painting.
The highlight of the trip however was a day trip to Pulau Redang. During
the hour long boat ride from the Merang Jetty to Pulau Redang, we enjoyed
the sea breeze and the beautiful sights of the open sea and surrounding
islands. We had the opportunity to sight several turtles swimming in the
clear blue waters. Other activities at Pulau Redang included swimming and
snorkelling at the Redang Marine Park where we got to observe the corals
and colourful fish and other sea creatures.
As with in other parts of Malaysia, Terengganu has its fair share of local
delicacies. At the recommendation of our tour guide, we patronised a
beach side eatery in Teluk Ketapang to sample some ikan celup tepung or
fish fritters.
Checking out the local delicacies at Pasar Payang
However, what left the most impression were the warm
hospitality of the team at The Royale Aryani and the
delicious local delicacies and cuisines served us during our
stay such as keropok lekor, Laksa Terengganu, Nasi Dagang
Terengganu and Pulut Nyiur amongst many others.
Batik painting demonstration
Pulau Redang ... here we come!
A visit to Kuala Terengganu is also not complete without a visit
to Pasar Payang, the famous local market selling a variety of
things ranging from local food and delicacies such as keropok,
serunding and dodol to beautiful batik materials, pelikat,
kaftan, copperware and local handicrafts.
All ready for the boat trip to Pulau Redang
The GHCM team’s
retreat was indeed a
fun and memorable one
and we left Terengganu
with a great experience,
unforgettable memories,
the opportunity to get to
know each other better
outside the office setting
and more importantly the
resolve to work harder and
better for the Company.

Touring the islands of Phuket
Group Legal Services, Corporate Planning
& Boustead Reit Teambuilding
in Phuket, Thailand
G
roup Legal Services, Corporate Planning Department and
Boustead REIT Managers Sdn. Bhd. had organised a joint
teambuilding programme on 24 - 27 May 2013. This time, we
headed to Thailand’s largest island, Phuket.
1st
Day
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by our friendly tour
guide, Mr. Watsan @ Hassan.
After lunch, we were taken to view the marvel of Sino-Portugese
architecture along Thalang Road before proceeding to witness
the dramatic headland that stretches far out to the sea at the
southern end of Phuket
Island, Promthep Cape.
It is a popular lookout
and vantage point for
fantastic photographs, as
powerful waves pound
the rocky cliffs overlooking
the Andaman Sea and is
a perfect place to enjoy
the beautiful sunset. After
admiring the panoramic
view, enjoying the breezy
Sawadeekap…sweet welcoming by the local girl
fresh air and snapping lots of photographs, we checked in into
our hotel.
We freshened up for a while at the hotel before heading to
Phuket Fantasea to experience Phuket’s ultimate night time
cultural theme park. It is the world’s first entertainment park that
presents Thai unique culture and tradition as its main theme. All
the attractions in the park, be it the shows, restaurants, shopping
streets and all other areas are inspired by Thai mythology, legend
and folklores. We were amazed by the spectacular elephant
and acrobatic shows and completed it with an equally splendid
dinner buffet spread that was served at the same venue.
Our adventure began with island hopping expedition by
a speed boat where we enjoyed the idyllic scenery of
Phuket’s surrounding islands such as James Bond Island
(which was made famous by the James Bond movie),
Panak Island, Ice Cream Cave and Hong Island just to name a few.
The weather was perfect at the beginning but it rained cats and
dogs for the rest of the journey where the sea turned choppy and
the boat ride very bumpy. That really turned us into James Bonds
and Bond Girls.
2nd
Day
Now that we were all drenched,
cold and feeling absolutely
famished, it was time to dig-in into
the scrumptious Thai cuisine served
at Aman Residence Restaurant
at Panyee Island. Panyee Island
is a Muslim water village where
houses, school, mosque, souvenir
shops and even restaurants were
built on stilts over the shallow sea.
Exploring the sea caves and limestone formation at Phang Nga Bay
Everybody … say cheese!
Our activity continued with canoeing excursion
alongside the limestone formations of Phang
Nga Bay. The experienced paddler took us
to discover stalactites inside the surrounding
sea caves. We needed to lie on our backs in
the canoe to enter the dark low-ceiling caves.
It was our first experience of such kind and
we were truly mesmerised by the beauty the
nature could offer. We completed the day with
swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear
water of Lawa Island.
Beach hat … checked, sun shades … checked,
we are all geared up for the fun in the sun!
By the time we reached Mhak Prok Pier, it was
almost dark and we proceeded for early dinner
at My Little Kitchen Restaurant. After an eventful day, we decided to have an early night at the
hotel.
Day 3 itinerary was not too hectic compared to the previous day. The highlight of the
day was shopping tour around Phuket city. First, we were taken to the Phuket Gems
Gallery showcasing the intricate work of jewellery making. Here, we learned in depth
about the history of gems formation and the processes of making jewellery. Next, a
stop at the famous Cashew Nut Factory before we proceeded to Phuket Premium Outlet and
Jim Thompson’s Outlet. We managed to grab some souvenirs for ourselves and our loved ones.
3rd
Day
Waiting for dinner to be served at Royal Phuket Marina Yacht Club
Our shopping activities did not end during the day, and after having dinner at a restaurant in the
Royal Phuket Marina Yacht Club we continued excitedly with our shopping spree later that night
at the Naka Night Market. The weekend night market offered not only varieties of local products
but also a great place to observe and experience the vibrant culture of the local people.
4th
Day
On our last day, after having breakfast at the hotel and last minute photography
session, we headed to the airport and boarded an early flight to Kuala Lumpur. What
an amazing and eventful
weekend and it was time
to say goodbye. As they
say it in Thai, “Sawatdee

we meet again. Oh yes!
return we will…

Nottingham graduates

six months
S
ome 757 students were awarded with undergraduate
degrees at The University of Nottingham Malaysia
Campus (UNMC) graduation ceremony, hosted by Deputy
Vice Chancellor, Professor Karen Cox, and Provost and Chief
Executive Officer, Professor Christine Ennew on 6 July 2013.
Students standing as a sign of gratitude to families and friends at the graduation ceremony
“I am particularly proud of the high level of employability
among graduates from The University of Nottingham Malaysia
Campus. Over 96% are employed within six months of graduation,”
said Professor Christine Ennew, citing data from a recent 2011 study
on graduate destinations.
She added, “Our success as a university stems from the success of
our graduates, many of whom now hold key positions in leading
organisations in Malaysia and internationally. This demonstrates that
a Nottingham degree is recognised worldwide and is highly sought
after by employers.”
UNMC alumnus, Mr. Andre Khor said, “I was promoted to my current
role as a Finance Director for Shell companies in Indonesia, less than
10 years after graduation, having previously worked in the UK and
Malaysia. It is my privilege to be the first batch of undergraduates
to join The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. I benefitted
from a UK-style education in an Asian setting, engaging with world
class lecturers. I also had the opportunity to spend time at the UK
campus and I believe that the quality of my education and the
international perspective I gained at Nottingham has really helped to
Students eager to get their scrolls smiling for the camera
propel my career forward. And I’m honoured to be able to
maintain my relationship with the University by serving as
a member of the Industrial Advisory Board for the Business
School.”
According to Dr. Douglas Tay, Operator Guidance Technology
Engineer at Exxon Mobil and an alumnus of the university, “I
would like to share a quote by Jonathan Kozol that I live by.
'Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. It is
all about risk management. Once you enter the workforce,
start with doing simple tasks well. Slowly, you will see big
battles becoming smaller'."
At the ceremony, Albukhary International University Vice
Chancellor, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkilfli Abdul Razak, and
National Autism Society of Malaysia Chair and Founder,
Mr. Teh Beng Choong, were both conferred honorary

Nottingham University Business School in
Economist's top executive MBA programmes
N
ottingham University Business School has been featured
in the first global ranking of executive MBA programmes
produced by the Economist. Nottingham was placed 40th in
the world and 6th in the UK by the inaugural ranking, which
measured business schools on the personal development and
education experience and career development opportunities
offered by their executive programmes.
Dean of Nottingham University Business School, Professor Martin
Binks said, “This is the first time we have entered an executive
MBA ranking and the result confirms that we have an excellent
executive MBA that attracts high calibre students and provides
an outstanding learning experience supporting our students’
personal development and progression.”
The Economist invited all business that are already ranked in its
annual Global Top 100 MBA rankings to take part in this new
executive ranking, which draws on data from a survey of schools’
Executive MBA students and alumni from the previous three
years, as well as information directly provided by the school. The
ranking looks specifically at 27 criteria, including the quality and
diversity of students, the quality of the faculty, the percentage of
students who receive a promotion after they graduate and the
average salary increase graduates can expect.
Nottingham University Business School recently celebrated
re-accreditation by the globally-respected European Quality
Improvement System - EQUIS - an accreditation scheme for
leading providers of business education run by the European
Foundation for Management Development in Brussels.
Only 142 business schools in 39 countries have achieved EQUIS
accreditation and Nottingham is the only one to be awarded
accreditation for its business schools in three locations - its
campuses in the UK, Malaysia and China.

in accordance with the theme of the celebration ‘Malaysiaku
Berdaulat: Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku’ (My Sovereign Malaysia:
My Homeland). “We hoped that all Malaysians will continue to
nurture and strengthen the spirit of patriotism. Love our country
and work together and be tolerant of each other. This will further
strengthen the spirit of patriotism among us,” said Baharum.
