SACRAMENTAL LIFE OF THE CHURCH
BAPTISM
We are happy to welcome new members to our Catholic faith
community. Infant Baptisms are usually celebrated on the third
Sunday of the month. Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a
child involves a serious obligation and faith commitment on the part
of the parents and Godparents. Parents must be registered and
active members of the Parish for three months before beginning
the baptismal preparation process. We encourage parents to
begin this process prior to the birth of their child. Call Deanna
Thurlow in the Pastoral Office to schedule an initial appointment.
After the necessary paperwork, which may be obtained at the initial
appointment, is filled out, Baptismal Preparation Class is attended
and completed Godparent Eligibility Forms are received, then the
Baptism will be scheduled. Our Baptismal Preparation Class is held
the first Sunday of each month at 10:15am in the Pastoral Office
Conference Room. Please call 772-287-2727, ext. 106 to confirm
class attendance.
CONFIRMATION
Candidates for this sacrament are those already baptized and
who have received formation in religious education. We celebrate
Confirmation with the Bishop. For High School students, this is a
2-year program. Contact the Parish Office. Adults wishing to be
confirmed can contact the Religious Education Office.
FIRST EUCHARIST
First Eucharist is usually celebrated in the Second Grade after
attending the required religious instruction classes either at St.
Joseph Catholic School or through the Religious Education
Program. Preparation for First Eucharist is a two-year program. First
Eucharist for children takes place in the Spring. Please call the Parish
Office for more information.
RECONCILIATION
A priest is available to hear confession on Saturday, from 11:00
a.m. to 11:30 a.m., from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Thursday
before First Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Penitential Services
are held during the Seasons of Advent and Lent. First Reconciliation
is usually celebrated in the Second Grade prior to First Eucharist.
Please call the Parish Office for more information or to schedule a
time convenient for you.
MATRIMONY
Wedding Masses are celebrated on Saturday, and may begin as
early as 12:00 noon, but no later than 1:00 p.m. Engaged couples
must be registered in this parish for a minimum of 6 months,
attending Mass regularly, and participating in our envelope system
before initiating the marriage preparation process, which requires
approximately 6 months to complete. You must call the Parish
Office at least six (6) months prior to your intended marriage to
begin the marriage preparation program, and in advance of
scheduling the wedding reception hall. Tentative wedding dates
require meeting with a parish priest and his subsequent approval,
before being confirmed/scheduled on the Church calendar.
HOLY ORDERS
If you feel you may have a vocation to serve the People of God
through the Ordained Ministry as a Priest or Deacon, or the Vowed
Religious Life, please contact the Diocesan Vocation Office at (561)
775-9555 or speak to one of the parish priests.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
This Sacrament will be celebrated with a special Liturgy for the
Sick twice a year, Lent and Advent, or in the case of immediate need,
upon request. If you are homebound or in the hospital and desire to
be anointed, please contact the Parish Office. When a patient is in
the hospital, please ensure you register as a Catholic so that our
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion can visit you.
ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS
We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or
sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to
rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at St. Joseph Church.
Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an “active
member” of St. Joseph.
An “active member” is:
 Properly registered on the parish rolls.
 Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days
 Participates in parish activities/ministries when possible
 Uses the parish envelope system for donations
These are the main factors that will be considered in making the
determination.
PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
We welcome you to come spend some quiet time with Our Lord
in the Adoration Chapel, which is accessible via a combination entry
pad. Please visit the Parish office to obtain the combination code.
The Chapel is accessible 24/7.
Please remember the intentions
of the following as you pray this week:
Lynda Bernitt, Dorothy McManus,
Geraldine Smith, Gerald Mullhausen,
Baby Elliott Theresa Preston,
and those who have no one to pray for them.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of:
Bill Delap, Anna Marie Carlaw, Grace LaMothe,
Stanley Bosakowski, JoAnne Croke,
Lucille dePool, Barry Bagnati,

CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
Many of life’s failures are people who did not
realize how close they were to success
when they gave up.

CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF MERCY
We want to live this Jubilee Year in
light of the Lord's words: Merciful like
the Father. The Evangelist reminds us
of the teaching of Jesus who says, "Be
merciful just as your Father is
merciful" (Lk 6:36). It is a programme
of life as demanding as it is rich with
joy and peace. Jesus's command is
directed to anyone willing to listen to
his voice (cf. Lk 6:27). In order to be
capable of mercy, therefore, we must
first of all dispose ourselves to listen to
the Word of God. This means rediscovering the value of
silence in order to meditate on the Word that comes to us. In
this way, it will be possible to contemplate God's mercy and
adopt it as our lifestyle.
SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING CORPORAL
AND SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY
Forgiving
 pray for those who have wronged you and pray
for the courage to forgive;
 ask forgiveness from others;

let go of grudges; go out of your way to be
positive with someone you are having a difficult
time with.
JUBILEE PRAYER OF MERCY
During this Year of Mercy, we invite you to pray
the Jubilee Prayer of Mercy before Mass begins or
during your personal prayer after Communion.
INVITATION TO ATTEND THE CHRISM MASS

Grotto of St. Michael the Archangel. Many popes and
saints have knelt and prayed at this grotto, seeking the
protection of Saint Michael. Later, arrive in San Giovanni
Rotondo and celebrate Mass* in the sanctuary of Padre
Pio. This is followed by a tour of the sanctuary,
including the old church and the crucifix from which he
received the stigmata in 1918, as well as Padre Pio’s
tomb. Then, visit the new church dedicated in 2004 to
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. You will also see the
confessional where Padre Pio spent many hours
directing pilgrims on their journey toward God. (B, D)
Day 8: Monday, October 10, 2016 San Giovanni
Rotondo - Loreto - Assisi. Travel the Adriatic Coast to
the Marian shrine of Loreto. Visit the Holy House of
Nazareth and the beautiful Madonna of Loreto where
more than 50 popes have made a pilgrimage. You will
celebrate Mass* before crossing the Apennine
Mountains en route to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis.

Day 9: Tuesday, October 11, 2016 Assisi - Rome. Begin
your morning with a special visit to St. Mary of the
Angels Basilica, where St. Francis spent most of his life.
Enjoy a visit to the Chapel of the Porziuncola, the rose
bush and the cave where the saint prayed. Later, visit the
Church of St. Clare, who founded the Order of Poor
Clares and followed the teachings of St. Francis by living
a life of poverty and humility. You will also be able to
see and kneel before the crucifix from which Jesus spoke
to St. Francis, asking him to rebuild his church. A local
expert will provide an interesting tour of Assisi
highlighting the huge 13th-century basilica where
you can see many of St. Francis’ possessions and a
series of frescoes
depicting his life.
Celebrate Mass* in the
Basilica of St. Francis
before departing for
Rome. (B, D)

grandest of the world’s churches, St. Peter’s is
unsurpassed in beauty. Proceed to St. Mary Major, one
of the oldest shrines dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.

FROM THE OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT
STEWARDSHIP
Stewardship is a way of life, a life of accountability
and responsibility acknowledging God as Creator and
Giver of all. Stewardship calls us to share a portion of
our time, talent, and treasure so that the Good News
of Jesus Christ may be shared with those who do not
know Him. Stewards, as disciples of Jesus Christ, see
themselves as caretakers of all God's gifts. Gratitude
for these gifts is expressed in prayer, worship, offering
and action by eagerly sharing our gifts out of love for
God and one another.
Stewardship reminds us that we are the
administrators, not the owners, of our assets. Christian
stewardship can be identified by several meaningful
characteristics; the most important is that it
strengthens our relationship with God. It is a way of
life, not a program that has a beginning and an end
Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of
the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus.
Stewardship is not just a program, or a method of
fundraising, it is a way of thanking God for all His
blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent,
and treasure we have each received.
Stewardship is a path to holiness. It makes us more
like Christ who came not to be served, but to serve. It
is a grateful awareness that all we have and all we are
comes freely from God. When we offer our lives back
to God in love, He blesses that generosity a
hundredfold.
To learn more about Catholic Stewardship, I
strongly recommend that you read the pastoral letter,
Stewardship: A Disciple's Response (1992). This
document gives us a template on how to live
stewardship as a way of life by receiving God’s gifts
gratefully, cultivating those gifts responsibly, sharing
them lovingly with justice, so that we may return
those gifts with increase to God.

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWS
St. Joseph Catholic School, rooted in Gospel values and centered on the Eucharist, celebrates the
uniqueness of each child by providing a safe, nurturing environment, promoting academic
excellence, encouraging service to others, and cultivating artistic self-expression.
There will be a School Mass at 8:30am on Wednesday,
March 16, prepared by our 3rd Grade. The Symphonic
Band’s Mass Ensemble will be accompanying the cantors.
We seek excellence in all areas, but we have
exciting news in the area of technology: we are looking to
transform the layout and technology of our computer lab to
create a TEAL, or Technology Enabled Active Learning Lab.
This is a concept pioneered by MIT to help students tackle
educational problems in an environment that enhances
creative thinking, problem solving, and student-centered
learning/activities. Our plans/dreams are big, but we are
happy to announce that we have begun. Using federal grant
money we were able to purchase one Z-Space 3 D computer.
This special system allows teachers to create threedimensional models for their classrooms and allows students
to see and manipulate objects in a three dimensional
environment. In the future we hope to raise $15,000 in
donations to buy four additional machines to allow more
students to work in this environment at the same time. In
addition, our computer teacher, Mrs. Mullens, has used her
Adopt-A-Class funds combined with a $500 donation from a
parishioner to purchase four DASH robots that allow
students to practice coding. Research has shown that the
logic needed to code helps students to be successful in math

and other "order of process" academic work. Ultimately this is
the sort of benefit that a TEAL lab can provide to students by
allowing them to approach learning in a way that is
inherently fun and challenging.
The Spanish National Exam will be held on Monday 3/14
and on Thursday 3/17 for 8th grade and a select group of 7th
graders. The National Spanish Examinations are the most
widely used tests of Spanish in the United States to measure
performance (interpretive communication) and
achievement of students who are studying Spanish as a
second language. Last year our students obtained 3 Silver
Medals, 5 Bronze Medals, and 15 Honor Diplomas. This
year our students will also be "FABULOSOS"! Keep them in
your prayers."
CATHOLICS CARE. CATHOLICS VOTE.
"We need to participate for the common
good. Sometimes we hear: a good
Catholic is not interested in politics.
This is not true: good Catholics immerse
themselves in politics by offering the best
of themselves so that the leader can
govern."
- Pope Francis, 9/16/13
The Catholic bishops of the United
States are pleased to offer once again
to the Catholic faithful Forming Consciences for Faithful
Citizenship, our teaching document on the political
responsibility of Catholics. This statement represents our
guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and
duties as participants in our democracy. We urge our pastors,
lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use
this statement to help form their consciences; to teach those
entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful
public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming
election in light of Catholic teaching. The statement lifts up
our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American
citizens with rights and duties as participants in the civil
order.
Read Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to
Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United
States, which provides a ſhamework for Catholics in the United
States.
