The other returning starters are senior Kenna Winkler, junior Alison vonBrevern and junior Quinn Van De Hei who all enter their her second year starting on varsity. Trautmann is also excited about her incoming class that includes: rightside hitter Erin Blohm, along with sophomore Alise Gray and freshmen Brianna Ver Voort both battling for the starting setter position. Rounding off our varsity roster are both sophomore middle Kelly Sabrowsky and freshmen outside hitter Kristina Herman, both playing JV, will be called upon on varsity when needed. Tracy said Maggie Blohm will again give her team the most versatility and top scores and should do very well in the freestyle sprint events. Other seniors expected to made significant contributions are: Jessica DeGroot, Leisha Abel, Laura Iverson, Sam Priebe, Lisa Hallam and Karlet Negrete. In the junior class, Tracy said Kristin Kmecheck came into her own last year and should now be able to really make a difference in team scoring and adding needed depth to the team. And sophomores Megan VerVoort and Gail Goodacre improved last season and the coach is hoping they’ll start where they left off last year. Tracy also expects several others to contribute. “We have many new swimmers, both incoming freshman and new swimmers to the team that will add interesting mixes to the team,” She said. “Junior Megan Vandermoss will add to the team’s depth. (Freshmen) Kaylee Olson, Meghan Opgenorth, will contribute with all their club experience. New Comers, junior Emily Pelky, freshmen Katie Menting and Leslie Scheurer should be quick learners and contribute to the overall team standings.” Tracy did note that the team doesn’t have big numbers and will have to stay focused and work hard. That is the lofty goal set by the Seymour soccer team as they open the Bay Conference season. “Our team has set a goal to win conference,” Thunder coach Todd Messner said. “That is setting a very high goal since we finished at the bottom of the conference last season. I feel that it is a pretty evenly spread conference and most games will be very competitive and there will be surprises. “West DePere and Luxemburg Casco were the top teams from last year and I expect them to be tough again this year. Also, Hotonville, New London, Shawano, and Marinette will be looking to fight for the top spot in conference.” Messner figures his top players on the team will be: junior forward/defenseman Eric Elbe, junior forward Hunter Effa, freshman forward Josh Fameree, junior forward/midfieldsenior midfielder, sophomore forward John Powless IV; senior midfielder Lance Burch, junior defender Cody Mauthe, senior defender Drew Morrissey, senior midfielder Doug Larson, sophomore goalie, senior defender Nick Schmidt and sophomore defender Brandon Krause. “A good number of the players have varsity experience, but most of their experience was not too successful,” Messner said. “We have been working on playing more as a team, keeping our focus for the whole game, and consistently playing with intensity. I expect this group to experience much more success this year.” Sal’s Foods Rumor’s Bar & Grill Don Theobald Masonry Seymour Black Creek Nichols Black Creek Randy Johnson Dairy Schuh Construction, Inc. The strength of how well the Thunder could be lies in the development of new quarterback Nick Effa. The Thunder finished 7-4 last season with the year ended in the playoffs with a defeat to eventual state champion West De Pere. “On offense, we return many of our running backs and receivers, but will be breaking in a new quarterback, Nick Effa,” Seymour coach Matt Molle said. “Look for Mark Dessart, Bret Rottier, and Clint Cornell to lead our Wing-T based rushing attack. In addition, expect many others (Cody Plaster, Moehring, Mike Hornick, Colton Schenk, Drew King and Keegan Schroeder) to contribute to our rushing attack.” Molle expects Alex Leisgang to be a big weapon for his team in the passing game. He also sees Matt Dessart, Brandon Berg, Eddie Blackbull, and Moehring to be key components. On the offensive line, the Thunder is led by three-year starter Ben Sabrowsky and Nate Gerhardt. He also sees Ryan Doxtator as a key contributor as well as Andy Helein, Brandon Ullrich, James Hebb, and Drew Mader as players to fill the other positions on the line. “It remains to be seen what type of offensive identity we will form with the loss of the Troy Rottier to Cal Skogman connection and offensive line stalwarts such as Blaize Koon, Deitric Gray, Josh Holz, Jeremy Pierre, and James Pesola,” Molle said. “We will need to form an identity quickly and mesh a new group of players to keep our current playoff qualifying streak alive.” Molle said defensively, it’ll be tough to top last seasons output. “Defensively, we have our work cut out for us to match the overall team defense of last year as last year’s unit ranked second in the Bay Conference in points allowed,” Molle said. “Last year, we did a great job keeping our opponents out of the endzone and off the scoreboard. Therefore, we were able to stay in games and allow our offense to find its rhythm. Getting the opponent off the field and not allowing points will obviously be a key.” Molle sees Nate Gerhardt and Andy Helein to anchor the defensive line. Alex Opgenorth and Jacob Anderson return as starters at linebacker. Nick Effa returns as the only starter from last year’s secondary. “How quickly we can add new players to the defensive line and secondary will go a long way in determining what type of defense we will be,” Molle said. “In addition, we will need new players to step up and fill significant roles left open due to graduation.” Molle said West De Pere will again be the conference favorite. “They are most assuredly the team to beat in our league and maybe in the area in Division 3,” he said. “After West De Pere, there will once again be several teams vying to be at the top of the always tough Bay. Hortonville and Lux-Casco took steps forward last year and will continue to try and build off of excellent 2010 seasons. New London, Denmark, and Shawano have all recently been at the top or near the top of our league and will be hungry to get there once again. I would expect Marinette and Oconto Falls to be vastly improved and ready to challenge for the top tier of our league. As for us, our opening games against the Falls and Marinette will go a long way in determining which teams can separate themselves in the conference race. We have come to expect nothing less than our best and we will work hard to continue to compete at the top of this tough league. If our seniors can give us good leadership and we can “gel” quickly as a team, we should be able to be a solid football team. We will be tested early in our scrimmage against the battle-tested Pulaski Red Raiders.” Dan’s Roofing Accurate Driving School Cumicek Jewelers Seymour Seymour Seymour B Black lack kC Creek reek kC Convenience onveniience Lubinski, L ub binsk ki, Reed Reed d & Klass Klass Law Law Firm Firm Black Creek Seymour Kailhofer’s K ailhofer’s G Greenhouse, reenhouse, Nursery Flowers N urrsery aand nd F loweers Varsity Football Schedule Day Fri. We have excellent setters that can get the ball to our strong hitters. We need to be consistent passers and aggressive defenders and we will be very competitive this season.” Five seniors return from last season that include middle hitter Nicole Ritchie, setter McKenzie Marcks, outside hitter Alyssa Polanco, outside hitter Mandy Verbsky and right side hitter Alexa Pahlow. Other returning letterwinners are juniors Erin Scroth, a right side hitter/middle hitter and libero Haley Ehrle. Others expected to contribute are junior outside hitter Holly Pingel, junior setter Johanna Chizek, junior outside hitter MacKenzie Conradt and sophomore middle hitter/right side hitter Rachael Berard. Roesler said the conference favorite will be Wittenberg-Birnamwood. “They won the conference last season and have a talented group of returning letter winners,” Roesler said. She also likes other teams chances in the league, including her own. “We definitely have the talent to fight for a spot at the top of the conference,” she said. “And so does Bonduel, Stevens Point Pacelli and Weyauwega. Other running backs are Freddy Fielding, Zech Riehl, Danny Erickson, Hayden Ehrle and Josue Gonzalez. Coach Heinemeyer said an area of concern will be how well the line plays on both sides of the ball. “Size and depth will need to be addressed,” he said. We will certainly look to underclassmen to help relieve some of these concerns.” Other upper classmen include - junior wide receiver/ defensive lineman Brandon Smith, junior wide receiver defensive end Levi Singler, junior wide receiver/defensive end Mitchell Collar and senior end, defensive end Branden Ziebell.
