WWI – The Forgotten War There are no more World War I veterans alive today, and few text books cover this war in any depth, but its impact is still felt today, especially in the middle east. Learn about gas warfare, trench warfare, and advances in weaponry. Hear recordings of real doughboys, see cultural pieces such as Gary Cooper in his first movie roll – the very first Academy Award winning film. Prohibition & Murder in Helena in the 1920’s The 18th Amendment ushered in Prohibition: when alcohol was prohibited from being sold, manufactured, and transported. It was not illegal, however, to drink it. Demand still existed, which meant that organized crime and murder became a national epidemic. Prohibition was difficult to enforce, especially in Helena. Learn about the red light district on South Main and about the murder of a “lady of the evening” in 1929. Her unsolved murder has been a cold case all these years. In most cases, students age 16-18 will be permitted only with prior consent of the parent, instructor and staff. In some cases, students under 16 may enroll with a paying adult. Do I need to register for courses in advance? Yes, and the sooner the better! Many of our classes have a minimum number of participants in order to run, and we need to be able to to give roster numbers to the instructor as far in advance as possible. Some last-minute registrations are possible, but if we have not met the minimum number two to three days before the start of the class, we may have to cancel. What if a class gets cancelled? If your class is cancelled, Continuing Education staff will contact you by phone. Please make sure your contact information is current. If we cancel the class you will receive a 100% refund or will be given the option to transfer your registration to another class. What if I can't attend a class for which I am registered? Please contact the Continuing Education office as soon as possible. If you cancel 3 or more business days before the first class meets, we will refund your registration, but a 10% processing fee may be withheld. If you choose to transfer to another class in the same semester, the processing fee will be waived. Course and material fees cannot be refunded after the first class. How are refunds handled? Immediate cash refunds are not given for withdrawal from a class or when a class is cancelled, regardless of the type of payment made. If payment is made by cash or check, the refund is provided via check in the mail. Credit or debit payments can be refunded to the same card. What about parking? Parking Permits are required for vehicles in the lot immediately adjacent to our building from 7:30am until 6pm weeknights. Some classes will be given a temporary pass, which will be sent via email, or can be picked up at the first session. If you will be arriving for class before 6pm and do not have a pass, please park along the street (Livingston Ave, N. Sanders, or Townsend) to avoid being ticketed.
