Gardening for Kids Preschool Movie Time Come have an adventure at the Library. Watch a short movie featuring favorites like Dora and Thomas! After the movie, we’ll have a craft and color! Ages 2-5. Stories, not snores, fill the air. Sucked thumbs come out to create crafts.Tip-toes turn to stomps and songs for a noisy parade through the Library. For young gardeners, the growing season is never over. Once a month, experiment with indoor plants, make garden or nature crafts, see how plant parts and pollination work, learn how to cultivate worms, a gardener’s best friend. Indoor programs are designed for children in grades 2-6 exclusively. The results – a bounty of holiday cookies to serve at your family’s holiday gatherings. Cooking partners will bake two fresh batches of cookies to add to the merriment. Following the bilingual story time, using paper and material scraps, we’ll create paper dolls inspired by the book’s artistic illustrative style. Block Party for Tots Introduce your young builder to a room full of block stations just right for preschoolers. Blocks of all sizes, shapes and colors are provided for small construction workers. Animal and people figures add to the imaginative fun. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.Ages 2-5. Thurs., Sept. 29 3:30 p.m. Family Place Parent/Child Workshop Our Family Place Parent/Child Workshop series is for parents or caregivers along with their toddlers.This familyfriendly setting, equipped with age-appropriate toys, books and games allows parents and toddlers to play, read and interact with each other. Each session, a resource specialist will be onsite for informal discussion. Participants are asked to attend all five sessions. What changes would you like to see? We’ll make and sign mock petitions together. Ages 8-11 with parents. 10 a.m. “Play” Your Right To Assembly! Go back in time and enact short scripts that depict various problems the colonists had before the Constitution was written! Learn more about our Bill of Rights in this fun theatrical reading session. Ages 8-11. 11 a.m. The Constitution Challenge Test your civics knowledge on our freedoms and engage in high-energy interactive games from the computer screen to the floorboard in teams! Ages 11-18. 12 p.m. Design-It-Yourself Banned Book Covers “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “The Giver” are examples of hundreds of challenged and banned books across the globe. Nix censorship and exercise your freedom to read and make art! Design and create your own handillustrated book cover of your favorite banned or censored book with a pen and ink, color pencil, collage material and watercolors. We’ll exhibit them throughout the Library. Each submission is also an entry to win a Banned Book prize pack, including an Amazon gift card. Ages 11-18. 2 p.m. 10 Programs For Children & Families OPERATION: The Library wants to spread holiday cheer throughout the community! Join us to make holiday pop-up cards that will be distributed to residents of Maple Farm, a local retirement community in Akron.All ages are welcome.All program attendees are invited to join Library staff in December to deliver the handmade cards at Maple Farm. Mon., Nov.7, 4 p.m. Sew Your Own Holiday Feltie Whether you have little or lots of experience with hand and machine sewing, this holiday crafting session is for you. We’ll meet you at your own skill level to create a brightly-colored felt ornament with just enough stuffing and doodads to give it personality. Ages 10-adult. $2 suggested donation. Find yourself trapped alone in a room with a ticking time bomb.Your family members or friends have the manual to defuse it, but they can’t see the bomb, so you’re going to have to talk it out – fast! Thurs., Nov. 17, 6 p.m. 12 Program For Children & Families The Holiday Season Around the World We have just finished celebrating the holidays with all its many traditions, but have you ever wondered how people of other cultures celebrate the holiday season? Join us to learn about several holiday traditions around the world, including a craft and a traditional holiday treat. Ages 6-10. Wednesday, December 28, 2 p.m. This 8-week class for children ages 6 months-5 years will teach you over 100 signs to use with your child. In a playful, educational and language-rich environment, caregivers and children will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games and songs.
