under-car sway bars come fully finished and painted , ready for installation.
The machine work is precise, and
everything fits ... which is more of a
rarity than you might imagine. APS
also has the facilities to install their
components on your car, if you don't
feel quite up to the task.
With chassis modifications including upper and lower strut tie-bars,
22mm front and 25mm rear anti-sway
bars , Koni gas adjustable shocks/
struts , and BBS 15x6 three-piece
wheels with BFGoodrich 195x50VR 15
Comp T/As , the jet black Scirocco
really handles well. Cornering is very
flat, with little tendency towards
understeer, and an on-highway ride
that is practically undiscernible from
stock. For the times when the road
becomes twisty, merely open the hood
and turn the Koni adjusting knobs
counter-clockwise; the result is instant
firmness and improved control, with
only a slight degeneration of freeway
ride qualities. Backing up the suspension 's improvements is a set of Repco
Metal Master brake pads and stainless
steel brake lines for added stopability.
Engine modifications include a
German-spec GTl cam, exhaust manifold and down-pipe, plus a Gillet Power
Sound exhaust system. Neuspeed's
popular throttle-body has been added
as well , with a re-curved distributor
dropped in to take advantage of the
engine's improved powerband (see
chart for horsepower improvements).
Helping the air conditioned powerplant
keep its cool is an engine oil cooler
replete with thermostat.
As noted in the chart, the Sci rocco 's
power output has been substantially
improved, especially in the 5000 rpm
range . Mid-range power is also up,
easily noted when driving the car. An
added benefit of the exhaust system is
a sportier sound than stock, but not at ·
decibel levels that'll attract the attention of the gendarmes.
Finishing off the componentry of
APS 's slick Sci rocco is a BBS aero kit
with Zender rear spoiler, plus European bumpers and headlights for a
sleek , high-tech look. lnteriorwise,
good taste prevails further with Scheel
model #401 seats covered (to match
the rear area) in supple leather. Further
driver pleasure is garnered from the
Porsche Design Momo steering wheel,
while a top-line Pioneer stereo provides the sounds.
This latest project car from Automotive Performance Systems is not exactly a low-dollar machine, but it
shows just what can be done with the
willing little Scirocco . By choosing
your parts carefully, we 're sure you
could build a performance-minded version for a reasonable sum . ~
