We continued to focus on our strategic goals, improved the impact of our programs and services, increased our visibility and took a leadership role in national strategies that will ultimately help more Manitobans breathe easier. All of our efforts were aimed at preventing lung disease and improving the quality of life for the 284,000 Manitobans that must cope with the devastating effects of lung disease. We continued to Neil Johnston Board Chair focus on air quality issues, tobacco reduction, education, support and research. As you will see in the following report we were able to help thousands of Manitobans with our programs and services. We continued to offer smoking prevention programs to youth and we helped both youth and adults to quit smoking. We continued to protect thousands of Manitoba worker’s lungs with our Occupational Health program, and increased awareness of lung disease through our work with the media and through our social media sites. Our support groups continued to provide help to our clients and their families. Hundreds of health professionals received training from us in our conferences and workshops. This training will enhance the quality of care that they are able to provide to Manitobans with lung disease. Our staff and volunteers have taken a leadership role in developing national strategies that will boost our national structure, and research and health programs. These strategies will enhance our organization across Canada and in Manitoba. We did all of this because we know that when you can’t breathe nothing else matters. Our supporters Margaret Bernhardt-Lowdon Executive Director understand this all too well. This year we were again blessed with the support of thousands of donors, sponsors and volunteers. We would not have been able to achieve any of our successes without their enthusiasm, generosity and dedication. In the upcoming year, we will mark our 110th anniversary of helping Manitobans to breathe easier. We are firmly committed to the lung health of Manitobans and we will continue to work hard every day to improve lung health in our province. BOARD AND STAFF *Volunteers have always played a vital part in our success to help Manitobans breathe easier. We rely on the expertise, enthusiasm and hard work of our voLUNGteers to help us reach our goal. Board Members Dr. B. SUPPORT GROUPS Supporting Manitobans with lung disease We provided support for the one in five Manitobans with lung disease and helped them to breathe easier through our support groups, toll-free help lines, Facebook pages and our website. Many lung patients attended our Best Breathers group in Brandon, Better Breathers group in Winnipeg, and Better Breathers on Air group. We also offered support to patients, families and caregivers in our Lung Transplant group. These support groups provide education and support. Attending these support groups in person or by telephone gives patients, their families and caregivers the opportunity to ask questions and interact on topics ranging from nutrition and healthy eating to proper use of medications, exercise, rehabilitation and more. Annual Report 2012 / 2013 7 SUPPORTERS We are very grateful to our supporters for all that they do: sponsor events, make donations, purchase tulips, give in kind gifts, support our Door to Door Campaign, fund programs, contribute through payroll giving and much more.
