Dear Members,
Another successful Ohio Fair Managers Convention has come and
gone. There are many thank you's to be said. As always, there will be a
few people inadvertently left out, but my gratitude for these individuals
precludes me from not trying to mention as many folks as I can.
Before I start, my thank you's, I'd like to briefly mention the Gala &
Reverse Raffle at the Convention. There were a few people that felt the
reverse raffle drawing was unfair, especially with G.O.S.A. board mem
bers winning a couple of the money drawings. There is a very good rea
son for this. G.O.S.A. board members purchased over 25% of the total
tickets. Each board member is required to sell at least five tickets or buy
the unsold portion. Obviously, the more tickets one buys, the odds in win
ning becomes much greater. The board members that won had each pur
chased more than ten tickets each over the last two years. You can be rest
assured that the drawing was very legitimate. Also, each ticket that was
drawn was witnessed by several people, including folks that were not on
the board. Because of questions raised, we are listing aJ! the tickets drawn

President's Message Cont.
and the order in which they were drawn elsewhere in this
newsletter. Remember, by purchasing several tickets your
odds of winning increase greatly.
The most important acknowledgement goes to the Ohio
Fair Managers Association. Without their cooperation, our
participation would be non-existent. Special thanks to our
convention committee and chairman Ray Prowant. Also, a
hearty thank you to ticket chairman Stan Connell, who
spent many hours coordinating tickets sales for the Gala &
Reverse Raffle.
Special thanks to Bob and Kitty Keating, Jo Violan,
Jo Anne Prowant, Pat Bush, and everyone for their laborious
duties selling tickets at the Convention. To Brad Gentille for
being emcee at the Gala and Randall Car for passing out
door prize tickets. To Sheila Linn, Bridget Albanese, Vivian
Culler and the Ohio Fair Queen for drawing reverse raffle
tickets. To John Richards for stic](jng around so late and
writing the winners checks. To Pat Bush once again for
obtaining the door prizes. I'd also like to thank all the folks
that donated such wonderful door prizes at the Gala.
Thanks to Tom Clink for his many hours manning the
Trade Show booth and all the trustees and members who
assisted. To Trade Show chairmen Ken Weber and Larry
Dishong who provided us with wonderful signs for the
Convention. A very special thank you to Allied Insurance
who sponsored the D.l at the Gala. I'd also like to recog
nize Jack Woods, Ray Prowant once again and Dave
Gallapoo for their time in participating in the O.F.M.A.
panel discussions. To George Jones for his enlightening
seminar and Jack Woods again for obtaining him.
Concerning our annual meeting, I'd like to thank Penny
Otterbacher for her chaplain and photography duties. To J. R.
and Jennifer Woods for helping with registration. Also, to
Tim O'Brien, with the amusement business, for reporting on
our annual meeting. Thanks to Todd Lindsey for giving us a
recap on the Ohio Department of Agriculture at our meeting.
Thank you to all the award recipients and their presenters
for their dedication to the outdoor amusement business.
I'd also like to give special recognition to the following
folks who helped with committee assignments even though
they are not actually board members. They are Missy Pfile,
Vickie Clements, Jackie Woods, Penny Otterbacher, Jerry
Otterbacher, Anissa Prowant, Dick Pilati and Debra
Poeppelman. A very special thanks to Howard Call, Doug
Guninsler and Don Klingler for their tremendous support in
coordinating the G.O.S.A.'s presence at this year's conven
tion. And the last thank you, but certainly not the least, to
our red-eyed secretary Ed Ebert who manned our G.O.S.A.
office vigilantly for four days. I'm sure that I have forgotten
some folks that should have been mentioned, but without all
of your support and generosity this could not have come to
a successful completion, I sincerely hope this new year
finds you healthy and happy.
Yours truly,
M. Dean Otterbacher, President
Greater Ohio Showmen's Association

OLD BUSINESS
A. Phone - Ken Weber expanded on a recently discussed plan to
work with LCI on a program designed to make quite a savings
for the membership on phone bills. The plan was approved by
the board and Ken will report later.
B. Amusement Business Article Response - An article in the A.B.
was brought to the attention of the board at Convention. This arti
cle was very negative toward the independent concessionaire.
Members of the board contacted the representative covering the
convention for the A.B. and gave a rebuttal. Ray Prowant distrib
uted a commentary from a later edition of the magazine from
other members of the industry. Watch for further commentary in
future issues of the magazine.
C. Convention Recap - A lengthy discussion was held on the recent
convention and improvements that could be made.
D. Awards - Bill Prowant reported on a very poor response to the
request for nominations for the awards to be presented at the
O.F.M.A. Spring Dinners. The board was instructed to have
nominations at the next meeting. Doug Guinsler listed the fol
lowing dates for these affairs:
Dis!. 1 & 2 - April 5 - at the Seneca Co. Fairgrounds in Tiffin.
Dist. 5 & 9 - April 6 - at the Glenmore Country Club in N. Canton
Dist. 7 & 8 - April 19 - at the Holiday Inn in Zanesville.
Dist. 3, 4 & 6 - April 20 - at the Fayette Co. Fairgrounds in
Washington Court House.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Aims Expo - Ken Weber distributed copies of a plan from the
Expo to increase participation including an invitation for a
G.O.S.A. membership meeting during the show. The board
voted to participate. The time will be published later. They also
invited G.O.S.A. to produce a seminar at that time.
B. Executive Secretary's Report - Tom Clink reported on his activi
ties during the Convention and made recommedations as to
improvements which could be made in the future. He compli
mented the Prowants on the Merry-go-round horse and remarked
that it will be an addition to the various shows throughout the
year. Doug Guinsler will undertake that project.
Dick Pilati was commended for attending to help the Scholarship
committee.
Date of the next Meeting:
Thursday, February 20, 1997 at the office.
The meeting was adjourned in regular form.
Ed Ebert, Secretary
COMMITTEE REPORTS
CONVENTION - We have once again finished up another successful
convention. For those of you who could not attend, you missed a grand
and informational event.
The G.O.S.A. sponsored two seminars this year. They both were
Creating a Good Appearance on Your Midway, given by George Jones,
one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. We also had board members sit
in on two panel discussions. They were Midway Games Issues and
Exclusive Contracts. Dave Gallapoo had this to report on the latter:
The views ofG.O.S.A. relative to Exclusive Contracts with suppliers
were supported during a panel discussion at the recently concluded
O.F.M.A. convention. Panelists included - Moderator Dwain Swank,
O.F.M.A. District 5 Director; Rick Frenette, Ohio State Fair manager;
Al Rhonemus, O.F.M.A.; Mike Pence, N.I.C.A.; and Dave Gallapoo,
G.O.S.A. The panelists were in a majority agreement with the position
that Fairs and Festivals should not enter into contracts that seek to limit
or eliminate competition. This position does not suggest a problem
with "pure" sponsorship which contributes greatly to the success of
events throughout the state. Neither does it seek to alter any relationship
that an Event has with individual Vendors, Exhibitors, or Concession
aires selling to the public at a retail level.
There was a significant amount of discussion and participation from
the audience during the period.
The board had a lengthy discussion at this meeting on possible
changes and improvements for next year's convention. We would greatly
appreciate thoughts and comments on this matter and on future seminars
from the membership. Please contact the office or any board member.
GALA - The Gala was a very entertaining evening. A great time was
had by all that attended. Everyone seemed to enjoy the DJ - the dance
floor was busy all night I A special thanks to Allied Ins. who sponsored
the DJ for the evening.
The Reverse Raffle was once again a tremendous success, it netted
our organization over $14,000 and $15,000 was given out in prize
money, not to mention all of the wonderful door prizes. Thank you to
everyone that donated items. The prize winners were Brad Gentille - $500;
Tanner AJbanese - $500; Daniel P. Otarucar - $500; Paul Otterbacher - $500;
Poor Ray - $1000; Joseph M. Mercurio - $2000; and Grand Prize of
510,000 went to Dave Gallapoo.
A special thanks to Bob Keating who helped with the Reverse
Raffle, selling tickets and tip boards. Also to Dick Pilati, Tom and
Sheila Linn, Jo Violand and Kitty Keating for manning the ticket table
on the second floor on Wednesday. Also Kitty Keating, Jo Anne
Prowant and Pat Bush for manning the table at the Gala, and Randall
Carr for handling the door prize tickets.
We would like to thank the rest of you that helped sell tickets and
everyone that bought tickets. It is support like this from the member
ship that makes our events successful.
HEALTH & SANITATION - Jack Woods reported that he attended a
health advisory board meeting on the morning of January IS, before our
board meeting. This meeting was to reorgaruze the advisory board. Four
new board members were introduced. Informational literature was given
to each board member for review for the next advisory board meeting,
scheduled for Febmary 12. Jack will have a repol1 for the next newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP - The following new members were approved: Mike
Bittinger, Mark Coup, Diana Selby, Raymond McConnell, Eldon Phillips
and William Jacob Bush as a Jr. member. We, as an organization, would
like to extend a warm and hardy welcome to them.
JUNIOR :MEMBERSHIP - The Jr. Showmen's committee meeting
was held on January 8, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. at the O.F.M.A. convention.
We discussed and confirmed what we would like to include in a mem
bership packet, which Ken Weber will make up. It is to include: ajacket
order form, member profile, a recent Newsletter, a membership card,
our mission statement and a membership application.
The upcoming ski trip was discussed and final arrangements were
made. The Sandusky weekend that was planned for February was
cancelled because of a lack of interest. We have decided that in order
to get more participation we need more members. To accomplish this,
we have decided to advertise in the newsletter, with approval of the
board. Planning for 1997-98 was talked about and it was decided that
we would like to go to the I-X Center during the Amusement Park and
take a tour of the complete facility.
We would like to go to Lima to stay at the Holidome and then tour
Wood's Concessions' Winter Quarters and also Durant Enterprises'
operation. This would occur November 7 & 8,1997.
Guests at our committee meeting were Anissa Prowant and Debra
Poeppelman.
Our ski trip was on January 12, 1997, at Snow Trails in Mansfield.
It was attended by four Jr. members and four Sr. members. We arrived
about 10:30 a.m. and it was cold but we all had a great time between
the slopes and the warmth of the lodge. The event was over around 4:00
p.m. All of the Jr. members except for one skied and one of the Sr.
members skied.
SCHOLARSHIP - Doug Guinsler announced a meeting of the
Scholarship Committee to plan the Kissel Scholarship. He also
announced that the checks will be mailed immediately to the recipients
of the Otterbacher Scholarship Fund. This year's recipients are: Jason
Otterbacher, Shannon McRill, Brian Kuder, Angela Howard, Stacie
Linn, Brandt Fundak, Norman Carpenter, Colleen McCracken,
Gregory Brock, Jonathan Walsh, Matt Plizga, Jenillfer Murray and Rob
Cirino. Congratulations to them all!
YEARBOOK - Bill Bush reported the Yearbook deadline is rapidly
approaching. If anyone wishes to renew, change, or purchase a new ad,
please contact him at P.O. Box 86, Doylestown, Ohio 44230, 330-658
2874. Or contact the G.O.S.A. office. There are a few full color ads left that
are not spoken for. The price of these are approximately $400, with one
photo. Additional photos or specific requests will be priced by the printer.
ROUNDUP - Todd Stucky will be in charge of this year's Roundup. It
will again be held at the Pickaway Co. Fairgrounds on October 14,
1997. We would like to remind you it's not too early for donations of
auction items or door prizes. If you have items to donate, contact Todd
Stucky, Pat Bush or the G.O.S.A. office.
SOCIAL EVENTS AND PLA
ING - The committee meeting was
held January 8,1997,12:00 p.m. at the O.F.M.A. convention. We evaluated
past events and discussed why they were successful or not. It was decided
that cost was a factor to all of the members and that in the future we
should try to keep the cost as low as possible. We discussed the possibility
of going to the Caribbean Islands, to one of the all-inclusive resorts.
We are planning a fishing trip to Arkansas - several members have
already been there and liked it enough to go back. We are going to
promote this in the newsletter. It will be in November, with a
September deadline. The G.O.S.A. will not be required to put down a
deposit. It is the feeling of this commjttee that if we do not get participation
that it is probably not a function of the organization to plan social events.

AND FAREWELL
~
We would like to take this time to bid a heartfelt
thank you and farewell to our departing Treasurer,
John Richards. He has dutifully served this organiza
tion for years. Over those years, he has served with
many board members and presidents. He has seen
many changes and helped with many of the things
that have made this organization what it is today.
John has been involved with our industry for many
years, serving both on our board and on the Lorain
Co. Fairboard. We see him often throughout the sum
mer as he visits many of the county fairs. He has
become well known over the years and has made
many friends in the business.
Once again, John, we would like to thank you for
your years of service and commitment to the G.O.S.A.
You will be missed. We hope to still see you at the dif
ferent events throughout the season.
