SAINT ISAAC JOGUES PARISH 8149 Golf Road ~ Niles, IL 60714 847/967-1060 ~ Fax # 847/967-1070 Website: http://sij-parish.com The Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2009 Page Two The Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2009 TREASURES FROM OURTRADITION BAPTISM OF THE LORD: COMMUNITY CONCERN We are urged to move quickly beyond the intimate scene of Jesus' birth toward the more challenging vision of his baptism. In short, we are asked to move in the direction of life itself: from concern for intimacy to concern for community. A Christian parish becomes its best self when it accepts the challenge of community. The parish community, as the real expression of a local church, cannot limit its attention to the search for justice and intimacy among its own members; it must be prepared to take up the cross, standing against evil and injustice wherever they exist in the world. This may seem like a harsh message for the Christmas season, but in fact it is the church's message at all times, in all seasons. There is, ultimately, only one mystery Christians celebrate: the paschal mystery, Jesus' dying and rising in a new human community called "church.” - Nathan Mitchell HAIL AND FAREWELL TO CHRISTMAS Today's celebration of the Baptism of the Lord marks the official end of the Christmas season. Christmas 2008 will be remembered for odd extremes in weather and local political surprises. Most of all, Christmas 2008 will be remembered by St. Isaac Jogues parishioners for beautiful music. Thanks to our Music Director, Lisa Hall, the Liturgies and Epiphany Concert were impressive and inspiring. Having spent three Christmases here, I would like to congratulate Lisa, our choirs and instrumentalists for taking a "quantum leap" forward. The "transformation” did not just happen. It required hard work and commitment. For our choir members, Christmas "began" in June. Speaking for others, but especially for myself as pastor, I applaud Lisa and the choir for all their efforts and considerable achievement. For those of us who attended last Sunday's Concert it was truly a joyful experience. What a wonderful way to end a season and begin a new year! --Fr. Luczak One of the most ancient and enduring sites for baptism in Rome is the church of San Giovanni in Fonte. This church is in fact a baptistery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome. The Emperor Constantine sponsored its construction in the year 315, and it is therefore the oldest baptistery in the world. It is the model for nearly all later baptisteries, including perhaps the font in your own parish church. In the fourth century, churches didn't contain baptismal fonts. Baptism was a once-a-year event, at Easter, and mostly for adults. Within a century, new practices soon masked the original purpose of Constantine, and later popes made additions, like a nave and altars, and even side chapels. High above the place where the immersion baptism pool once stood, an inscription in mosaic tile is a lyrical expression of our baptismal tradition. It speaks of the font as the "womb of the church," and encourages the sinner not to be afraid of the water. "Though your sins be many and great, do not draw back afraid. Reborn from this stream, a Christian you shall be." The actual font is very old, but it is not the ancient flowing pool. As you often see in Italy, there are smaller pools carved into the marble railing of the font, just big enough to dip an infant. The present font has a carving of the baptism of Constantine, leading some to think that he was baptized here. That's not the case, since he waited until the last minute for a deathbed baptism, as people often did in the fourth century. It's not on the usual tourist path in Rome, but just a few steps from the Lateran Basilica is the best place in Rome to renew your baptismal vows and to marvel at the life-giving stream that has "washed the whole earth" over the centuries. -Rev. James Field, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Page Three The Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2009 SPIRITUAL LIFE Words cannot adequately express appreciation to all who helped make our Advent/Christmas season a time of joyful expectation, hope, and celebration of the God who became one of us! It takes many hands, hearts, voices, talents and a lot of time to bring people and events together, to help a parish be formed more closely to the image of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. So--to the Advent Wreath lighters, the Ushers, Sacristans, Presiders and Confessors, Planning Teams, Lisa Hall and the Music Ministry enjoyed at Mass and at the Concert, Money Counters, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Deacons, Art & Environment workers, Altar Servers, the Christmas Eve storytellers, author-in-residence Fr. Luczak, the translators and readers of petitions in other languages, the students who prepared the Advent calendars and chalk/home blessing packets, those who helped provide treats for hospitalities or who served and cleaned up, all who provided Christmas greetings, the Liturgy Board, the entire Parish and Maintenance Staff, all who supported or assisted with the Wreath Sale for the Women’s Center, the Coat Drive, the St. Vincent De Paul Society’s Giving Tree, Santa’s toys to our Sharing Parish, who provided or enjoyed the Simbang Gabi celebration, donated figures for the outdoor Nativity scene or gave to the Christmas flowers and decorations collection and all the regular and special collections taken up, who gave spiritual strength to our parish as Ministers of Praise or Members of the Rosary Group, to anyone who helped in other particular ways that have inadvertently been missed, and especially to all who assembled in our church to give thanks and praise to God for loving us enough to send His Son to dwell among us, to each and every one who reveals the presence of Christ through the witness of their lives---thank you and God bless you in this new year! LITURGY BOARD Due to the rescheduling of the St. Paul presentation the Liturgy Board meeting (including Planners) will be held this Tuesday, January 13th, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 6. Parishioners who would like to give the Liturgy Board comments or suggestions regarding the Advent/Christmas season are asked to call the RE Office, 874/9661180, or to contact any of the Liturgy Board members—Bill Dexter, Mark Duval, Cathy Forneck, Lisa Hall, Julie Higgins, Helene Kowalik, Dan Sobieski and Dee Stanton. NEW ALTAR SERVERS Training sessions for students (Gr. 4 and older) who would like to become Altar Servers for the parish will begin Monday, January 26, at 5:30 p.m. in church. Permission slips are available in the RE Office and must be returned by Monday, January 19th. For more information please call 847/966-1180. FAIR Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Parish Ministry Fair being held after all the Masses the weekend of February 7-8 in the Holy Family Room. This is a great way for you to see all the groups and ministries active here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish and a way for you to explore how you might become involved for a first time or try a new ministry or share with others how being involved has aided your faith journey. Hospitality will be served and representatives from the various organizations will be available to welcome you and answer questions you might have. Watch the bulletin for further information and for a list of all our ministries and groups! Page Four Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2009 READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I Samuel 3:3B-10, 19 Psalm 40:2, 4, 7-10 I Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20 John 1:35-42 ABOUT NEXT WEEK’S READINGS I SAMUEL: “Today’s reading takes place 11 centuries before Christ at an Israelite shrine, which is referred to as a ‘temple’ in the text. At the shrine was the ‘Ark of God,’ a wooden chest overlaid by gold in which the 10 Commandments were kept. Eli was the high priest at the shrine. Samuel was a young man in Eli’s service. We will hear how God called Samuel to be a prophetic leader of Israel.” I CORINTHIANS: “Today and for the next few Sundays, our second reading will be from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Corinth, a port city, was noted for its widespread immorality. Anything and everything was thought permissible. Paul doesn’t counter this attitude by putting down the human body as evil or of little worth. Rather, he does just the opposite.” EDUCATION *A meeting regarding First Communion Preparation will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, at 6:45 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. The meeting will be finished at the same time RE classes end. *Permission slips for the Confirmation Year I Retreat on Saturday, January 31st, have been mailed out. I wish all of you a Christmas that brings you close to the Lord, Jesus, who showed His great love for us by coming to us as an Infant. A Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, Fr Bill Brinker, csc Through the "Take Charge of Education Program", families, teachers and members of the community have an easy way to raise money for our school. Thank you for your continued support. …………………………………………………… SJB Preschoolers Meet Officer Joe and Fireman Sal Cub Scout Pack 175 would like to thank the parish communities of St. John Brebeuf and St. Issac Jogues for your generous support by purchasing Advent Calendars from our scouts. The funds generated from the fundraising will assure another successful scouting year for the Cub Scouts. Although we did have some left over calendars the Pack Committee found good use for them. The scouts donated nearly 200 of the calendars to Uncle Pete Zonsius who along with the St. Vincent DePaul Society distributed the calendars to less fortunate children. Uncle Pete said the children's faces really lit up when he gave them the candy calendars. Pack 175 is happy to bring some much-needed joy to the young children. The preschoolers at St. John Brebeuf were excited to have two important visitors to their class recently. The children were learning about occupations and had made a class book called When We Grow Up. With their teacher, the children made a diagram of all they knew about policeman and firemen and created questions for each based on what more they wanted to know. On the day each visitor arrived the children were prepared to learn. Officer Joe brought his partner, Officer Max, a German Shepherd police dog. Fireman Sal brought in his firefighting equipment. After hearing about their work, the children asked their questions, made observational drawings of what they saw, and had their picture taken with the guests. What fun it was to have these men come in to talk about their jobs and show the children that they are always ready to help them. Thank you Officer Joe Romano and Max of the Niles Police Department and Firefighter Eloy Salazar of the Highland Park Fire Department for visiting the SIB preschoolers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
