North Lincolnshire Newsletter Spring / Summer 2013 Eat well Move more Live longer Get Going Health Trainer Activity Get Going is a brand new FREE programme in North Lincolnshire for children and young people aged 7- 16yrs above a healthy weight. It aims to motivate young people and their families to lead a healthier lifestyle through individual appointments and weekly group activity sessions, and so reduce the risks of adult obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes as the young people get older. Health Trainers continue to engage with individuals and local communities to support them in making healthy lifestyle choices. The programme will be run and delivered by the Get Going team who will work with young people and their families over 10 weeks on a 1-to-1 basis with the focus on increased physical activity, nutrition and positive behaviour change. In addition each young person will also be issued a leisure card where they can access activities in their own time such as swimming, badminton and exercise classes through a joined up approach with leisure providers to help ensure sustainability; essential in developing lifelong healthy habits. As well as their one to one work with clients two of the Health Trainers have organised and run 8 very successful cook and eat sessions with small groups of clients across North Lincolnshire including; Barton-Upon-Humber, Winterton, Hibaldstow, Epworth, Scunthorpe and Ashby areas. The sessions help individuals to develop; Basic cooking skills, learn how to prepare healthy meals when often on a tight budget or with limited resources, and help them to gain confidence in their own abilities and improve their health. Get Going is unique from other childhood obesity intervention programmes in that: • Every 10 week programme is personalised to each individual young person or family • Get Going is delivered local to every young person or family involved • Young people and families can start the programme as soon as they are ready • Young people are invited to holiday clubs outside of the school term If you would like to find out more about the Get Going Programme, have any questions or would like to enquire about how to refer a young person onto the programme, please contact Alex Piercy on 07702 275246 or email getgoing@live.co.uk Feedback from the sessions has been excellent with individuals really benefiting from the friendly, fun, but structured sessions. As the work has become so popular the service is looking to set up new cook and eat sessions in new venues across North Lincolnshire. Park Run is a charity that aims to introduce free, timed 5km runs that are open to everyone, regardless of age and ability. More than 200,000 people have taken part in a Park Run since just 13 people turned out for the first one in Bushy Park, Teddington, in 2004. Park Runs have been set up in more than 160 different locations - not just here in the UK, but as far away as Australia and Afghanistan. Park Run’s success is down to the teams of local volunteers who organise the events. Scunthorpe’s central park is now hosting Park runs every Saturday morning, with the run starting at 9am. The starting point being the rear of the Pods. This event take place in the pleasant parkland surrounding the pods and is aimed at people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; we welcome you all. Park run started in February 2013 and has already seen over 300 runners registered and over 150 runners take part. Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for Customer Services, Sport and Leisure at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We all saw how an army of volunteers made the London 2012 Olympic Games such a memorable and inspirational event for billions of people across the globe.” This is your opportunity to bring some of that Olympic magic to North Lincolnshire and help introduce weekly 5km runs in your town or village to be enjoyed for years to come.” “Running is one of the most inclusive sports on the planet and it’s a great way to keep fit.” All park runs are free but you must register in advance. Once registered with park run, you can participate in any of our events at any time without letting us know that you are coming. If you want to be a park runner, you will need to register once only. We are writing with details of a brand new athletics activity beginning in North Lincolnshire. Following the success of London 2012 we are keen to ensure that children who have been enthused to try athletics are able to do so. The new club will be a Sportshall Athletics Club known as Sportshall Stars. Aimed at 8 – 12 year olds (Year 4 – 7) it will run every Friday evening, beginning 12th October, at The Pods, Ashby Road, Scunthorpe. Whilst unlike a traditional athletics club being based at an athletics track, Sportshall Athletics is still as much fun. It uses bright and colourful equipment and provides safe, indoor and enjoyable multi-skill activities. The club will be an excellent introduction to the sport, led by experienced coaches who will be assisted by some of our aspiring current athletes. If your child would like to join the Sportshall Athletics Club, please contact The Pods to reserve your place. This will cost £25 for 10 sessions. There are 2 sessions available that will run at 5 – 6pm, please ensure you give your preference on which time you would like upon booking. Payment can be made directly at The Pods or by ringing on 01724 291900, to pay by credit/debit card. We do envisage the club to be popular so we would encourage you to call as soon as you can to ensure you reserve a place. However, after a while even we begin to find ideas becoming run-of-the-mill and a little staid! An objective look at what we do, is occasionally needed, to ensure we are being fresh, innovative and forward-thinking. So our tutors attended a day of ‘Lets Get Cooking’ at Heslam Park (Scunthorpe) with professional trainers - Lisette Baker and Sue Blackburn, in order to brush up on a few skills, old and new. engage less able children by utilising innovative kitchen gadgets. In addition our tutors were supported to develop greater cultural awareness and understanding about family budget constraints. This is exactly what we needed for our 14 – 16 year groups and our Family Learning sessions. After a day of sharing good practice, we were left invigorated and brimming with fresh enthusiasm. Whilst our cooking facilities at the Heslam Park Study Centre are great, we wanted to maximise the skills of our tutors and the space/equipment available. The refresher course provided new healthy and tasty recipes and exciting ways to For details of courses for Schools Family Learning, Alternative Provision and Preparation for Independent Living - contact our Manager, Jane Laws at Study Parks for 01724 747686 or jane.laws@studyparks.org.uk School Lunches “School lunches have come such a long way since I was at school", this is one of the many great comments that came back from our recent Family Lunch Day at St Peter St Paul CE Primary School. Over 70 adults stayed for a healthy and tasty school lunch with their Child or Grandchild, which considering there are 90 children on roll was a great result for the School and the Councils Catering Service. Mrs McGuire Head Teacher said the many of the visitors commented on the quality of the service, the atmosphere in the dining room and the great meal provided and said the experience compared very favourably to their memories of school lunches. The day was a great success and something that St Peter St Paul will be holding again in the near future. For more information about school lunches contact Nick Parker, Operations Manager for Schools Catering - (01724) 297925 “Community Public Health Improvement Grant Scheme has been a huge success” The community public health improvement grant scheme went live in November 2012 and has been a great success.
